Are there any talks about resigning Rice and Greenway and if so how close are they to being resigned? Will the Vikes be signing the Cfl sack leader?

with Chad Greenway,Ryan Longwell, and Sidney Rice being free agents this year, do you think all of them will be re signed??

What additions could be in store for our defense next year? We have a very good defense, but could use another big time play maker to make our defense great (particularly at CB or FS assuming we resign Greenway). I know without a new CBA, any discussion is very hypothetical, but wouldn’t adding a Nnamdi Asomugha go a long way in making our defense extra special? Or do you think Chris Cook could end up being that caliber of a player? Also, I believe FS Chris Harris of the Bears might be available. Thanks for all in the inside info, Mike. It helps make the off-season feel shorter.

Vikes, clear the dead wood, free up some cash and sign the guys who need to be signed. Stop wasting money on guys who will not be here next season. I dont understand why teams pay guys to just hang out. I wouldnt sign Rice unless he is 100% and atleast two independant docs sign off on him. We had too many noncontributing players cashing checks.

Vikings what a proud name, but just for historical reason let’s make it clear. Vikings come from either Norway or Denmark.
Let’ not be confused by countries who would like to have real Vikings. We know we are so very proud!

So proud to have minnesota vikings too, welcome guys!

Just wondering if it mite make since to draft Cam Newton and Get Vince young and Keep Joe Webb. I know that Cam and Vince have problems but they have similar abilities and when you run your offence you want guys in that position that can do the same thing. The secondary of other teams would have to pull up we already have AP and if you do not honor a QB like these guys you he can run on you. And if you do pull up on the guys you can get something deep. After the QB spot I would look at the line only our secondary just needs to heal. I just want us to win. Long term I do not want to keep both these guys but I think one of them will pan out. I think you could get Vince Cheap.

    @Titus

Are you for the 18 game schedule?

  11. By Titus on Feb 3, 2011 | Reply

Frederick, with the nature of the game, for the players’ safety, I don’t understand it– especially with all the recent restrictive penalties to make the game lighter and safer– NFL light. — Seems someone wants both healthy players and more chances for injury– make any sense to anyone? More importantly and related, I think the longer the schedule, the less competitive the league may seem– the more games we have, the less important to start well– time is a great equalizer and in the end the best teams may not win, but rather the teams that save their best players for later in the season and other tactics that would evolve –

  12. By Titus on Feb 3, 2011 | Reply

The whole nature of the game and strategies will slowly change– you are taking a 10K race and buidling more of a marathon– not the same runners race both or at least the same runners run differently– does that make sense? Two more games may not seem like a lot– but it would be quite a change from when we had 14 game or 12 game seasons.

  13. By Titus on Feb 3, 2011 | Reply

And the owners obviously want more money– but one certainty will evolve — larger rosters and/ or more injuries– both of which will cost the owners more and in light of huge contracts– the money from an additional game (one I suspect would be at home, one away) would probably not offset additional salaries and medical insurance/ medical care. Plus at what point does it become commonplace? Right now, most fans religiously watch every one of their team’s games– and even try to watch many other games— because unlike other professional sports, there are not that many games. With baseball or basketball, a fan can miss 30 games or more and still watch a lot of their sport. Keep football special — don’t make it common.

  14. By Titus on Feb 3, 2011 | Reply

On the other hand, I would like to watch more football– but in a decade or two, do we go to 20 games? And then 25? There is also the sacredness of the history of the sport– all the greats– now comparisons get more and more murkey– records of yesteryear can be broken more easily. Imagine a 20 game season– in 20 years a player could beat Favre’s record by a 100 games– if the player survives a season that long– it could have an opposite effect– the longer season, such as the 18 game proposed could actually shorten players’ careers—

  15. By Titus on Feb 3, 2011 | Reply

@ Frederick, so am I for an 18 game season? With careful planning and the appropriate changes that handle objections– sure, I suppose, but I think we are close to a maximum– I believe there is more behind the change– probably some new franchises are in the works and the longer season is needed to accommodate the additional teams.

Thank you for your commentary on the 18 game schedule. I believe you mentioned about all you could on this topic.

There is one additional factor. Even now, many kids will not go into football because of the injury factor.

With the additional games, there will be more injuries, which will discourage kids from playing the game.

Kids will play more games. More kids will get permanent injuries. More kids will become LaCrosse or Soccer players.

—and like artificial turf, it is all for TV and money.

  24. By Titus on Feb 4, 2011 | Reply

Frederick, very good points– I had not even thought of the trickle down effect. You mentioned the word, “Gladiators” and that is exactly what football is– a spectacle of violence to appease the mas-ses and keep their minds occupied– in fact, if you study ancient Rome, the parallels between that empire and the USA are astounding.

Why is everyone against Brett Favre coming back, I for one would love to see him back. He still throws the ball with more velocity than most in the league. If the invests in a top O-line he would put up great numbers again. Also it would make sense to bring in Alex Smith, who has never had a chance to do much of anything, but he has the skills that are required to be sucessful in the league. Your thoughts.

I agree Kent. As far as Favre being washed up, I’ve heard that talk before. And every time that cr@p comes up, he goes on to have a great season the following year, as he did in 2007 and 2009. As someone who has been following American Football for years, I know that having the best season of your career one year and struggling the next DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE WASHED UP. THERE MAY BE OTHER FACTORS INVOLVED. But, then again, that’s the Favrehaters for you. Gleefully piling on.

yes favre still can throw a football better than most. however does he move faster than someone in there 20′s? is his reaction time as quick? does his body heal as fast? there is alot more to playing qb than just throwing a football. just let the guy go into retirement with some of his reputation still in tact. he gave us one great year and one sh-itty year. no super bowl. waist of two years as far as finding a franchise qb.

My question is will there be a strike in 2011, and if so, will there be replacements? I liked watching the replacements the last time. Mike Wobschall- NFL player’s Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith has talked to player’s agents about telling their cleints to skip the NFL combine and the draft. (I think is very poor choice of council that was probably not warmly welcomed by an NFL agent. An agent’s job is to represent the individual client and to negotiate his contract. I can not imagine any agent seeing this tactic as advantages or even positive.) DeMaurice Smith has also compared millionaire football players and even richer NFL owners fighting over a 9 Billion annual pot, to the physical and emotional scars of WAR.

It appears to me that DeMaurice Smith spends more time thinking about tactics (ie:like the first game of the year when all the players pointed upward with a number 1 finger to show solidarity) and not enough about showing good leadership and honestly negotiating in a positive way that represents and accommodates the player’s needs.

So my question is: Do you think DeMaurice Smith is doing a good job as the Exective Director of the NFL Player’s Association? How can fans stand up and get him removed? I don’t think it will be very long before the top player-leaders start to walk away from the current NFLPA leadership. What is you opinion of the current NFLPA leadership?

Everson Griffen was arrested twice in three days in Las Angeles. Now a party he is “hosting” in LA this weekend has brought him more negative attention. USC Athletic Director Pat Haden has told USC players their eligibility could be in jeopardy if the attend this party.

After Griffen’s first two arrests, Rick Speilman was quoted as say this will be handled interanally be Coach Frazier. GRIFFEN IS STILL PARTY-N.

Mike Wobschall – How long will this reckless party attitude with Griffen continue??? I find it very troublesome that Frazier and the Vikings think this is acceptable.

@Moorevikes– why do you feel the need to ridicule and cut others down? I must say I agree with the common sense part– I know many people like that; it can be quite sad. I have traveled the world and done quite a lot with my life, so I am pretty street savvy. By the way, if someone corrects me or points out a mistake, I am grateful and grow from it– it seems you are the type that gets offended when someone points out an error– perhaps it is a reflection of low self-esteem?
If you don’t like a correction, pay no heed to it. If you are smart, and the correction fits, you will apply it to become a better person. Life is about advancement and we do that by helping each other.

Most of the time I say nothing– trust me, there are many errors on this site I never mention. But you are right, this is a causal forum and not a place for English instruction– again, never meant anything malicious, nor did I speak with arrogance. Can you take some criticism? Stop playing the impostor— if you are going to police others, then you need to display exemplary behavior yourself. Thanks.

I would say its because we cut and trade Hall of Fame talent such as Randy Moss. It shows that having the best players and winning is not a top priority. We seem to be more concerned with peoples feelings than we are with winning. Not very Viking like if you ask me.

I wonder if in the 11th century a Viking hoard would tell one of its best warriors to go away because he hurt someones feeling.

Not to add insult to injury… but here are a few guys that were drafted behind Everson Griffen in the 4th round. (meaning the vikings missed the boat with these players)

#1-Jacoby Ford WR- ran a 4.26 at the combine (that’s fast). Agianst the Chiefs he had 6 receptions for 148 yards and took a kickoff 96 yards to the house.
#2 – Alterraun Verner the CB from UCLA. He was a starter for Titans this year as a forth round rookie. Verner had 85 solo tackles and 3 ints.
#3- Perrish Cox started 9 games at corner back for Denver and probably took Champ Bailey’s job.
#4 Bruce Campbell OT- Looked good as a backup for the Raiders – probably a starter next year.
#5 -Corey Wotten DE- looked good as a backup for J. Peppers in Chicago.

    Hey buddies.
I woke this morning feeling ah lets see here, how can I describe it, well feeling kind of SUPER as in SUPERIOR.

    I wonder why?

So I ask myself two questions:

First, perhaps the reason I feel so SUPERIOR is because it is SUPERBOWL SUNDAY and the WORLD FAMOUS GREENBAY PACKERS are about to win their FORTH VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY!

Second question: Have all the Viking Nation fans, Viking football players or for that matter all sniveling Minnesota citizens ever had such a SUPER or a SUPERIOR feeling on ANY SUPERBOWL SUNDAY.

    I THINK NOT !!!!!

If any of you losers want to see what a LOMBARDI TROPHY looks like up close, just drive on over to GREEN BAY Wisconsin you can see three of them (soon to be four)

LOSERS! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

acmepackers, that may be, in the first few SB’s it was only Icing on the cake, just as the Pro-b is now, nice but the championship was what counted. As I see it both the Steelers and packers are champions and now are playing for the icing.

Why call the NFL SB winners world champions when the whole world does not play? The real world champions are the soccer players that play worldwide.

Now onto the up-coming lock out, sounds like it will happen, and wondering about who to draft, acquire in free agency and such matters not un till both sides come to a agreement. I feel sorry for the collage players who have declare for the drat, they cannot go back to college, and will not get any cash until there is an agreement.

I agree Moorevikes 150% on the boycott idea– I said we should have had an empty metrodome at about the Cardinal game this past year– why should we run like a herd of sheep and support these multi-millionaires if they won’t do their job? If they lock out– why should we continue to pay them? If you receive poor service and cr-appy food at a restaurant, you do not return.
Unbelievable, young guys in their twenties making millions to run around in the limelight, playing a game 4 months– and the owners sitting on billions– if they do not want to deliver a quality product on time, let them feel the pain of no revenue.

I was very disappointed this weekend after seeing that Chris Carter was not selected to the Hall of Fame. I am not sure how they determine who should go and who should not. I feel that having Sanders or Faluk wait another year would not have been unjust. Carter has more that earned the right for selection for both his on field and off field work. In an era of headcases and egos, he represented all that is good when a player is a man of substance and character. Personally, he should have been a first ballot selection. Any idea when he will be elected?

Shouldnt we trade back in the nfl draft? I mean theres no very good quarterback that the vikings should take, Joe Webb is as good as any of them. i think we should trade back and get another 3rd round pick (thanks Childress) And then we could still draft a offensive lineman which we need more then a qb. What do you think?

No one can tell me there will be LESS INJURIES with an 18 game schedule, as opposed to the 16er.

Probably the only thing that is bad about football is all the injuries. Why make that feature worse?

    It just doesn’t make sense.

  129. By Frederick Jones on Feb 6, 2011 | Reply

I guess I am hoping that those fans against the 18 game schedule will voice their opinions, and side with the players.

What can WE, the fans, do to help get the stadium issue settled?

Could the team possibly organize an online petition?

Is there a forum where our voices can be heard?

If there isn’t one, how bout Vikings.com start one?

  131. By Alex on Feb 7, 2011 | Reply

I hear that Santana Moss is going to be a free agent tomorrow. Is there going to a chance that we will pursue him to replace Berrian. I think we need to get Kevin Kolb to be our starter next year. We need to get a different 3rd down back because Toby Gerhart is going to fit that role very well. I think that we might need a new TE because Shank is getting old. We need to get Champ Bailey and Nnamdi Asomugha from the Raiders. Now with that said on to the 18 game schedule i think it is a bad idea. The reason for that is think of the injuries that it will cause. The players will be tired and not want to go on to the next week. So i encourage everyone to voice there opinion on not having an 18 game season. So with that said GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS.

  132. By Frederick Jones on Feb 7, 2011 | Reply

    @Alex,

As far as the 18 game schedule, you are right.

The players are more important than the fans or the owners. They are what drive the NFL.

It’s like the goose and the golden egg. The owners should not be too greedy.

  133. By Frederick Jones on Feb 7, 2011 | Reply

I’ve been saying since day one that the owners strategy is an old one.
They are asking for alot, they won’t get it, but they will get something!

It’s working, they have everyone hot and bothered by the 18 game schedule.

    The owners are not stupid.

  134. By TW VIKE on Feb 7, 2011 | Reply

Alex- Nice list but do yourself a favor and scratch Kolb. It is time to get and develop ayoung QB. No McNabb, Hassleback,V. Young, etc. I would rather have #4 back. The way our O-line plays, we need Vick. We do need serious secondary help, like guys that can catch. Madieu needs to take his Payton award and get out of town. We need to sign Sydney for sure, Percy is awesome when he can play, but we do need another strong WR. Send Berrian with Madieu, maybe we can trade them for a towel boy!!!

Here’s an idea to compromise on the 18 week issue:

-Add 2 more wildcard teams to the playoffs
-Eliminate the first round bye for the #1 and #2 teams in each conference. Now the #1 seed plays the #8, #2 plays #7, and so forth, like pretty much ALL tournaments do.

Instead of 2 extra regular season games for all teams, you get 4 extra playoff games, which, in my opinion, is more exciting.

The new playoff games get their own weekend, and so you’re extending the season by 1 week instead of 2, and generating a ton of tv revenue because the playoffs are exciting. You’re also preserving the health of the players on teams who do not make the playoffs.

    Just a thought.

I agree with Chance in that we should concentrate on Webb, don’t waste a pick on a QB, draft OL and CB, make sure we sign our key free agents and cut loose a few non contributors such as BB, MW, and Tahi. Drafting a QB would be a waste, let Webb get some experience.

I was curious what happened to Ryan Moats. I noticed he was on the roster earlier this year. He didn’t play at all that I saw. Did he get traded or go on IR or something? I was thinking we could have a potential ok blocker in the backfield w/ him.

I wish the Vikings coaches established a more player-flex-type of system. Case and point last year in the playoffs Favre goes down…..then what? Who is going fill his shoes? TJ wasn’t near ready. They need to have players ready at all times. I do feel they may be getting better at that, however.
