Vince Young, The Vikings And The NFL Draft

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 6, 2011 – 9:47 am

We’ve already established that how the Vikings address the QB position this offseason will be one of the most popular topics of conversation in the coming months. A couple of days ago we went over a few names that will likely remain in this conversation, but now there’s another one to add. But I don’t think he’ll be considered a possibility in Minnesota for long.

The Tennessee Titans have decided to cut the cord with Vince Young, their 1st-round selection (#3 overall) in 2006 and a player who’s had a tumultuous time in Tennessee. He actually has a solid win-loss record, but he’s been poor in handling adversity on several occasions and the team has finally decided to part ways with the athletic and strong-armed QB.

So the natural questions is: Could the Vikings become interested? I think it’s an interesting topic to debate but ultimately my conclusion is that he might not be the best fit for the Vikings at this time. With new head coach Leslie Frazier beginning the process of building his team in conjunction with VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman, perhaps adding a volatile personality such as young isn’t the right way to go.

Young’s tremendous athleticism and win-loss record is tempting, however. He has outstanding mobility and strength, which allows him to avoid pressure and throw on the run or pick up yardage on the ground. Plus he has a strong arm. In the end, though, I don’t see Young landing in Minnesota.

So if he doesn’t go to Minnesota, where will he go? That’s anyone’s guess for now, but considering the Vikings are looking to address their QB position this offseason, I suggest that Vikings fans root for young to land in one of the following cities: Carolina, Buffalo, Arizona, San Francisco or Washington. Those are cities whose NFL teams choose ahead of the Vikings in the 2011 NFL Draft. While it’s more likely that Young joins a team as a backup rather than a starter, having Young on the roster makes it less-likely that that team will choose a QB with their 1st overall pick in the draft or will compete with the Vikings for other QBs on the open market.

Anyway, what do you think of Vince Young? Should the Vikings consider adding him? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

We already have a Vince Young….Joe Webb – and he doesn’t have and won’t cause near the problems that Vince would. Webb seems to have a great attitude and love for the game…..makes no sense to go get Young, not worth the hassle and I think the Vikes learned that from Mr. Moss.

Yes i agree Big Joe Webb has a great attitude and quiet a character vince is a premadonna and his talents are not worth it please please please stay away from poison like Vince Young. We need Minnesota football. Please trade berrian madeau and bryant mckinney for atleast our third round pick back

Need I remind people about our friend Mr. Jackson…our starter turned back-up to our first resurrections project in Rosenfels. To me Jackson is a bust and without Favre there to lend a hand in the development of a young QB like Webb I’m nervous that we would end up in the same situation. Leslie is not an offensive coach and his stated reliance on the run will not bode well for the development of Webb as the QB for the Vikes. With someone like Vince Young you open yourself up to an option that has proven himself with the Titans. With good players sometimes comes some hardship, just like with Moss (mistake letting him go that easy…thanks coach Childress) But if you open up the thought process to include the thoughts of a player like Young and at least hear him out, the level of animosity between, the QB coaches and ultimately the organization will not the as great.

All in all, Young is a good move for the Vikes! but success is a two way street and there will have to be co-operation and a hard hand to show young who is boss on the field on game day!

Sometimes a new environment would be good for an individual to straighten up. I am not saying aggrressively pursue him but if the oppurtunity presents itself at least explore the option.

Please get Roland we need a run first offense and a aggressive defense we should have brought Winfield on corner blitzes atleast 5 times a game he is the greatest tackling corner, never misses in the open field and has great awarness. We need to pound the rock with AP and Toby and we must start putting them both on the field to create a randy moss like affect everytime Adrian is on the field the defense Must take him into account and he has become a decent pass blocker along with Toby he is a good pass blocker and strong, we already have sets with adrian and a TE in back field but if instead if we had toby we could run it with either back point being that it could really go to either guy on many running plays giving us advantage of them not knowing which way or to who the ball is going to. if we can establish that run game i truly believe that Joe could do exactly what he did in Philly and we would win atleast 10 games Just convert the third downs we cant get by running and take care of the ball its exactly what the bears have done this year is just minimized the number of times cutler has to throw and relied on good run game to get them into managable third downs.

Not a good option, continue to groom Mr. Webb. He is young, athletic, and brings to the team what we have been missing for years..a QB who has the option to run and make gains and TD’s out of it! Save the picks in the draft for holes that must be filled with qulaity players!

Vince Young has learned nothing he is what he is and thats a whiner. He is the most immature player in the league, Moss has never walked out and you all hate Moss, so besides being the most immature player he is the most unproffesional QB in the league.

    Vince Young sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would rather have TJack over Vince Young … TJack has some intelligence

With an easier schedule next season will the Vikings be in line for a high 2012 draft pick for a QB?…every QB in the draft is a gamble but will the Vikings have another near future opportunity to draft a QB with a 12th pick or higher?…should they take abvantage now with the 2011 deep QB class?…Vikings need a young franchise QB of the future!

  15. By Shawn on Jan 6, 2011 | Reply

OK I think Ive figured it out ….DRAFT

round 1 … Nate Solder …. allows us to trade McKinney for a 3rd round pick
round 2 … Kyle Orton 28 years old 87.5 qb rating 20 TDs 9 Ints
round 3 …. WR or Safety
round 4 …. WR or Safety
    round 5 …. Ricky Stanzi
    round 6 …. BEST AVAILABLE
    round 7 …. BEST AVAILABLE

McKinney at 31 only has 2-3 years of solid play left if he becomes proffesional, nows the time to trade him.

There is NO DRAFT PICK that will have an 85+ QB rating next year.

Get McNabb and draft a future qb in da 1st rd. Also, we need a o-line for the most dangerous back in the nfl. Finally, on defense need a better pass defense you dbs that can catch. Winfield and Griffin are good but the rest really aint all that great.

Ryan Mallett. 3800yds/32TD’s, better than Luck and taller at 6’6”. They have him falling considerably down in the 20′s right now because of a couple other new names hitting the board(although considerably worse). And to Shawn, no 3rd Rd. pick(Moss). I’ve thought about Orton who I think did awesome with McDaniels(firing was BS with what he did w/o a run game and defense), but still not convinced. He had some ok days with the Bears and maybe their disfunction at the time and no WR’s did cloud my judgement. I would say top candidates should be Webb, Mallet, then possibly McNabb. I wouldn’t waste my time with anyone else really. Could draft Mallett and have him and Webb learn 1-2yrs and then see who’s ready.

  26. By Tim on Jan 6, 2011 | Reply

Carl: McDaniels would be the best OC choice but doubt it’ll happen. Shouldn’t have been fired in the first place and could end up in Carolina if they’re smart with 2 developing QB’s in Luck and Clausen.

I wouldn’t go for Vince Young right now, because he needs a quarterback re-build. Better to get a first round QB. Not Mallet, because our O-Line can’t protect well enough. Andy Dalton impressed me in his bowl game (late round pick?). So did Cam Newton, although he’d need a second contract for his ego. Greg McElroy (another late-rounder?) sure looked good in his bowl game…

I have a feeling somebody will take Cam Newton early, just because of his marquee personality and his ability to win games with sheer athleticism. Fans will buy tickets just to see what wild stuff Newton will do next. Might even be Carolina, now that Luck has decided to return to Stanford. That would mix things up, eh?

  40. By Carl Brodin on Jan 6, 2011 | Reply

I say go for Blaine Gabbert. With the offensive line we got no rookie will last back there. So get a stop gap QB to start this year and let Webb and who ever we get in the draft at QB this year sit and learn. Then see who’s ready next year. The 2nd pick will have to be a offensive lineman and hope the rest of the line is in tact next year or bring in some free agents quality ones. Hopefully Sidney Rice is healed up sufficently to be ready to go next year. Hopefully Griffin and Cook will be healthy next year that would help and trading Mckinney for a third round pick next year would be a good idea. With the 3rd or 4th round pick next season CB-S. Maybe entertain the thought of puttting Antoine WInfield back at safety who knows. As far as Vince young goes no way he’s poison. I would rathere go with Matt Leinart but just as a stop gap for a year or two at most.

I think what the Vikings should do is consider trading for Kevin Kolb. Michael Vick already took his starting job in Philly, plus he is still young and knows the West Coast offense (if coach Frazier decides to stick with it). Then I would focus on drafting a safety and offensive line.

  42. By Squidly on Jan 6, 2011 | Reply

I would definitely not take Jake Locker. I live in Seattle and I can tell you that he can run but he cannot throw at all. I think he actually ran for more yards this year than he threw for. He is horrible at reading defenses and makes a lot of poor decisions with the ball.

Sign Kyle orton , let AP/Gerhart/ FB Ryan D’Imperio run up and down the field.

If this doesn’t click and we fall to 1-15 or 2-14 next season we will get Andrew Luck for a shot at Super Bowl in 2013

Dont even think about taking VY he sucks. Just stick to getting Palmer or McNabb those will be your to best options at this time. Stick to getting Champ Bailey and find a new tackle to replace loadholt and McKinney. Also get rid of Berrian because he sucks, and get T.O., Chad Johnson, look at Avant from Philadelphia, o and get Moss back. If you do all of these things you will be contenders for the Super bowl

It would be the best thing for the Vikings, people don’t buy into the Jeff Fisher sound machine cause he not off the hot seat yet. With Frazier (Dungy like coach) VY will get the job done. Plus, you saw Fisher bully VY and the bully temporary won. If Jeff Fisher could not get the job done with Air-McNair, his consevative call playing wont every get him to the SuperBowl. Listen to the players not the media. Every player prior to VY that left called Fisher a liar. VY accepted and admitted he mishandled to situation. He has been very positive about his experience with Fisher and the Titans. ….Second chances…do work look at Mike Vick and the Eagles….

CARSON PALMER- there is no better veteran option out there in free agency this year. that man is dying to win a superbowl and doesnt have alot longer left in this league. he wants a team thats ready to win now and the vikings are with excellent receivers and running backs… none of which are cokky lil bas– tu- rds like TOCHO. Carson could lead us to dynasty land if we concentrate on the offensive line. and i say pick up albert haynseworth to replace pat. he just needs to be challenged. and i think leslie is the right personality to do that. and than BRING BACK MOSS rid ourselves of berrian. HARVIN RICE MOSS what better combo could any team ask for at WR Moss should finish his career in minnesota. he isnt as arrogant as he once was. all of these are good long term 5-6 year solutions if leslie can get this done THIS TEAM WILL BE A DYNASTY and if you notice most of this can be done in Free Agency and than focus on offensive line and DBs in the draft

As far as I’m concerned, Randy Moss has outlived his usefullness in football. I love Moss but he’s not that great anymore. Plain and simple. There’s a reason why the Patriots got rid of him in the first place.

  54. By seatownvikings on Jan 6, 2011 | Reply

Moss isn’t done yet. he’s more ready to be a team player and he is definitely still a deep threat. he still burns DBs left and right. and we had some of the highest scoring weeks with him on the roster and that was without Rice. and harvin even wasnt healthy for 2 of those games. and favre didnt have time in the pocket to set up a deep ball. and carson still has 5-6 years in him. all moss is looking for is a 5 year contract. he wants longevity. telling man this team could very easily be turned into a dynasty that has no need to cheat like the pats. carson palmer has never had a good situation in cincy. be he could here in minny.

I’m not crazy about the idea of Vince Young. However I do think the Vikings need a veteran qb for Webb to learn from. Webb may be good eventually, but it won’t be this year. It is EXTREMELY rare to have a Tom Brady situation where a 6th rounder can come in right away and be the man. I think they need to sit Webb for a while and let him learn the offense. Also, I HATE Fraziers run first offense idea. Every team talks about running the ball first, but the truth is that this is not a run first league. If you don’t have a guy who can throw the ball downfield you are going to have teams playing only to stuff the run and Peterson will get killed. If the Vikings aren’t going to try to pick up a veteran guy for the short term, they might as well just come out and say, “we don’t have a chance right now” and trade away Peterson for mor draft picks, because quarterbacks usually need 2 or 3 year to develop, and by that time peterson will be coming up on the running back decline age. Especially if he is getting the ball 400 times a season.

We don’t need Vince Young. He is very, very, very, immature. We have Joe Webb who is a great young man and just needs the experience! Stick with Joe! In the draft, get another young man and let them fight for the job. You need two good quarterbacks in case our oline doesn’t protect the quarterback again.

Looking at that Favre is done saves us paying out 20 million, TJack is gone or traded in off season, Maybe a TJack for vince young trade, plus throw in Asher Alan to the Titans, and this could be a nice even up trade.
This would be a great protection clause for the vikings to have a lagit QB on the roster, although I really like Webb, give him 5-6 more starts with one full off season now as Qb and Webb can shut the doors on any problems, either as a starter or back up #2.
Also the Vikings need to say good byes this year to Pat Williams with a very large thank you, Maybe look for trade with Young also.
Bryant Mc Kinni, Needs to go somewhere else, trade him as fast as you can and dig well into the draft 2nd round for a top notch Lineman who is willing to do his job to protect the QB, like Mc Kinnie has not done for last 2 seasons, ask any fan.
Barian and Shanko and Lieber, if the deal is right Do it.
Get a real good deal on Liber and maybe even Kevin Williams, for a stand up Big time Linebacker to help fill this above average trio in the middle. And one that really bothers me is Hutchenson, Man what a set on the sidelines chump, Get rid of this guy.
Anyone will do as well, cause they will show up and play well or hurt, this guy, just wants his praise and fortunes.
Pack it up Hutch. If Kluie wants to leave and talk negative about weather conditions at TCF stadium, then send him to Canadian Football League.
I still average 50 Yars plus per punt with no returning yards I will work it for minimum starting wage in the NFL also If Ziggy wants a great team he needs to ruffle the feathers and those not wanting to put in a great Minnesota Effort, should leave now.
Would rather See shanko Go and Baskett Stay for sure, He can fill slots in many positions.
Good luck and Keep Baskett, Big fan draw for tickets also. When you rebuild the outfield portion of the metrodome and sae the infield side with adjustments, thus you still have part of new stadium as a World Cahmpionship Stadium and the other half new will be for the other NFL World championchip .
The Bus parking lot outside can become a Underground parking to the Addition to the new and better current staduim with a retractable roof and a scoreboard that does Not get as big as the idiot in Texas.
We want a Purple People eating scorboard and a balcony area for Prince to play his Purple Reign Songs anytime he wants, and other brands to come in for each game. Now that would be the draw of the century, Band before the game and at halftime and fans get to be at concert levels and Still see the game each time at home. That would be soemthing else, something like we do in MN, not anywhere else.
And i hope there is room outside to have an Ice castle buildt each winter outside with lights and all for everyone to enjoy our state, city and stadium.

I don’t like the idea of pursuing Vince. Take a look at Jeff Fisher, and you see an enormously popular coach who’s been with the Titans franchise for a long time. Vince Young could not get along with him because he’s never had to work hard in his life. The Vikings need a worker, a Sam Bradford type of QB, not a 9-5 QB like Young. I could see Joe Webb being a hard worker and I can’t help but like the guy. He needs to be working hard without a doubt, but as a 7th round pick maybe he’s developed that chip on his shoulder and he’s got something to prove. More than anything, we need to figure out how to keep Ced Griffin and Chris Cook healthy, get the Vikes’ D back to the powerhouse it should be.

We missed out on Vick because everyone was afraid of his commitment to “fall in line” and play for his team… instead of himself.

But the “wild card” here is Tony Dungy…. Remember Mr. Dungy mentored Vick and taught him to see things differently and TRULY understand the importance of being a leader, on and off the field.

I say we send Dungy to Nashville to “gauge” Young’s true character…. was it just a personality conflict with Fisher and Young, or was it something else?

I trust Dungy’s judge of character. He is solid and a “man of integrity” that most young player (no pun intended) respect and look up to. Let him evaluate Young and give us a report. If he believes he can be “the man” I say we take a chance…. if not… Webb is NOT the answer, at least not yet. If not Young, let’s get a vet and draft wisely…

After a year like this with Farve, its too risky picking up Young. Viks dont need more bad press of one of their players. Dont get me wrong, Farve is my favorite player of all time. Its just the timing off all the off fields stuff is so unfortunate. You definitely dont want to risk probs like that with Young next year.

Go with Webb or a low risk character to get the team where they need to be. If Web dont perform well, shop for QB later. They have so many issues to work out now.

Vince Young is a remarkable talent. If you saw him earlier this year against the Cowboys, you’d think the Titans were a Super Bowl contender. I don’t think early in Coach Frazier’s tenure he needs to take on a very talented player who often is a total headcase. We have enough to rebuild going forward, we don’t need to rebuild Vince Young’s reputation. Luck is now staying at Stanford. In light of the teams who could draft him, he’d get killed for 2-3 years before he’d have any hope of having a decent team around him. I don’t blame he and Harbaugh for staying put.

Webb wasn’t drafted as a QB because he’s not one, and he will probably never be one. Try him out as receiver, that’s what he was drafted for. T-Jack again will probably never be a good NFL QB.McNabb has been benched on every team he’s played on for a reason. He’s not that good. Bad at Syracuse, benched and all over the place at Philly, Benched and unreliable at Washington. Vince Young is a wreck looking for a place to happen. Pick up Palmer first. Orton if you can’t get Palmer. Start fresh with the entire offensive line. And for GOD’s sake fire Bevell. We have the most predictable offensive coordinator ever. Try to get Josh McDanials. This will only be a start, but a good one.

what about an attempt to bait vick to coming to minnesota, trim our salaries, get rid of the babies, and offer vick a big money contract, he is free agent after this season…..then re-sign sidney rice is a MUST.

  75. By Woodboat on Jan 7, 2011 | Reply

Heh, Mike… get rid of the entire offensive line :) Good plan. Let’s start with a bunch of practice squad players and some late round draft O Lineman, that’ll fix it :)

How about we shore up what needs shoring up. Sullivan might make it at C if he can stay healthy. Hutch is still a viable LG. Loadholt sucks at RT, but maybe he can be a viable fit at RG. Move McKinney to RT and draft a franchise LT in the first freakin round. I wouldn’t be upset if they picked up a new RG, either.

I don’t think we should draft a QB this year… Go get an old guy, nothing flashy… a Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer type. Maybe Jeff Garcia, someone you don’t have to trade for. Use the draft to pick LT, CB, Safety. If they can get a raw RG in the later rounds with good hands and feet, grab him. If we tank next season, go Mike Ditka and trade our 2012 draft for A Luck. I, for one, am sick and tired of being the team without a QB. Can we PLEASE, for ONCE, get a P Manning, Brees, Brady, Rivers, Stafford, Bradford, Ryan, Roethlesberger, Rogers… SOMEBODY. We have to look back to freakin FRAN TARKENTON to find a legitimate franchise QB wearing the Vikings purple. Enough with the run first, throw second QBs. Look at the playoffs… which team of the 8 in the tourney have a cruddy QB? Answer: None.

    Sorry, its late….

TWELVE, TWELVE teams in the playoffs :)

If we have the problem going into next season trying to figure out which QB we should go with, Vince Young or Joe Webb, then we all will have a bigger problem to contend with shorter after the 16th game(18th)……….”Who do I pull for in the playoffs because the Vikes are sitting at home!”

    BECAUSE WE WERE 4-12 !

I do like that they are looking at Mcdaniels for Bevells Job! I think they need to start over completely!

We need to Draft the offensive line we can still keep McKinney I don’t like him but he is still better than a third rounder. Then we need to pick up DB and S through free agent. QB is still a need but I like going with Webb and finding a backup TJ is done in Viking country. Maybe there is a Brady out there in the sixth round.

alright what we need is a good franchise QB. i can see that in Joe Webb and if we just give him time i think it’ll turn out to be a good decision for Minnesota. Tjack is just like culpepper. every time he starts to do bad he fakes an injury so he doesnt get the blame for losing the game. but thats what he does best is lose the game. and i think that moving Toby to the FB position would be a great idea. that way we would have a 2 way running game. they could fake to AP or Toby. the defense wouldnt even see it coming. also we need another good CB. winfield is one of the best CB in the league and with another great CB we would have a solid defense. lets just hope that the williams wall will still be around for the 2011 season. we also need some hard hitting safety’s both FS and SS. so if we can get 2 good safeties in the draft that would be great.

The Vikings have for the last TWENTY years picked up aging quarterbacks dropped by other teams. The Vikings need to draft a quarterback and stick with developing a team leader. TJ is not a NFL quarterback. Good teams have good quarterbacks. Why cant we see that. A Viking fan since 1962!!!! and forever

Interesting conjecture. The off-season is destined to be intriguing and creative as the squad rebuilds itself. Young? Do any of us know how he might fit with a different environment and the right coaching? Remember, the entire NFL had a shot at Micheal Vick. Could anyone have predicted his resurrection? I do question all those prepared to tie this team’s future to Joe Webb–after two games and being drafted as a wide receiver, although he was a revelation against the Eagles. Best news so far, the interviews with McDaniel and Singletary.

This is what the vikings should do. Thanks to Luck staying in collage, this actually helps the vikings in getting a decent QB prospect later. We can use the first 3-4 picks for the secondary, Offensive line, Receiver, and heck maybe even a running back. If we do move Gerhart to Fullback (which sure looks like a good idea). We might have a chance at the Alabama running back to make a killer 1, 2 punch, with Gerhart being our 3rd punch as a fullback. After that, we can then look at Qb, maybe in the 5th round.

With the Vikes situation being what it is, you would at least have to have Young come in for a sitdown with coach Frazier and get his take on what happened in Tennessee. Coach Frazier may or may not be the right man for Young to play under, but it has to be intiguing for Vince when he looks at the weapons the Vikings have on offence to maybe toe the line a bit more.
As I was saying before, with the Vikings being at 3-7 and pretty much out of the play-off hunt, it was time to start “auditioning the youngsters”, “tanking” or whatever you want to call it to improve your drafting position. Winning three of their final six games did absolutely nothing for the team playoff-wise. Now instead of drating in say the 4 or 5 position and ensuring a shot at a top flight quarterback, the team now sits at number twelve and who knows what will be available !!!
This is pro sports, and as Leo Durocher once said “good guys finish last”. You do whatever it takes to build a winner even if it seems a bit unsavory. And even if it it takes losing a couple of meaningless games to ensure you obtain what is needed you do it. Shortterm pain for longterm gain.
Also instead of the Vikes picking early in the second round, they may have lost the chance to acquire a standout safety like Deaunta Williams of North Carolina. The Viking safeties are not very good.

Yes we should deff pick up Young because webb we cant relay on in 2011 neither can we with jackson. jackson has be benched to long and his ball control is terrible. We need young

please, it’s attitude, and young is no randy moss nut-job wise, in the right environment he could thrive, and frazier would be a good fit for young.

  91. By mike on Jan 11, 2011 | Reply

We better not go after young with all these problems he comes with and Joe Webb can do what ever young can do plus hehas that winning hunger. Please don’t bring Palmer to the Vikes we get caught up wanting big names but Palmer couldn’t take his team to the playoffs with two of the leagues best receivers and they drafted a young tight end for him so what would he do for us, our team looked better than the bengals on our down year and thats who some of you want. I’m not even going to mention leniart the buss just like alex smith we don’t want neither of them..

I think that Kevin Kolb is a bigger factor in this years draft than any other qb(in draft or league) if he lands in one of the cities you mentioned I’m sure VY could become more valued but if you have really watched him in the NFL you know that he could possibly never become the QB that leads a franchise to a Super Bowl without a lot of help.
