Vikings Tweak Roster Heading Into Sunday’s Game vs. Lions

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 1, 2011 – 5:27 pm

The Vikings tweaked their roster on Friday and Saturday in advance of Sunday’s contest in Detroit against the Lions. Here are the details…

On Friday the team placed S Madieu Williams on Injured Reserve and then filled the open roster spot by promoting CB Marcus Sherels from the Practice Squad to the 53-man roster.

On Saturday, the Vikings placed another safety on Injured Reserve – Tyrell Johnson. The Vikings signed WR Juaquin Iglesias from the Chicago Bears Practice Squad to take the roster space created by placing Johnson on IR.

Iglesias was a 3rd-round pick of the Bears in 2009 but wasn’t able to grab a full-time 53-man roster spot. He played college football at the University of Oklahoma from 2005-2008.

    Watch out for Marcus Sherels!!!

Sherels was the only Viking to grab an interception in the pre-season. He is very quick!!!

And he is a local boy, out of Rochester, MN.

We need to draft some outstanding offensive linemen in this year’s draft. It should be our number one priority.

  4. By Titus on Jan 1, 2011 | Reply

Hey Frederick– did you have a good new years?

  5. By Arrow86 on Jan 1, 2011 | Reply

Don’t forget Julio Iglesius! Whoops! Juaquin Iglesius! We’re starting to stockpile all of A.P.’s college buddies. We just need to get the weird guy from the dorm who showered in his underwear and we’re set! Seriously, Iglesius could be an eventual Berrian replacement. I wish we would have experimented with Sherels earlier. I know some knock his size, but Antoine Winfield is amazing, and he’s too small to ride a lot of amusement park rides.

Was anybody else annoyed that there was only a 38 second highlight reel for the Vikes whoppin of the Eagles?

  7. By Arrow86 on Jan 1, 2011 | Reply

wisconsinvikesfan: Annoyed, no! I was so mad I could pee-fire! :38 seconds isn’t enough to highlight Antoine Winfield’s play on the evening alone, not to mention all the other great plays by the team. Let’s hope for another great effort against the much improved Lions. I think the Lions have a better defensive front four than the Eagles did, which can also test Webb.

    @Titus,

I had a pretty holiday season. Lots of driving though.

    @WisVikes,

I didn’t see the highlight reel for the philly game. My guess is they didn’t think the Vikings would win it.!

Is it just me or has the defense become super aggressive since Frazier is the acting head coach and no longer soley responsible for the defense? With a weak secondary and not being able to pressure QBs with just a four man rush it was great to see the variety of blitzes called, with great results I might add.
I know Frazier does not like to blitz but putting heat on the opposing QB sure helped the secondary. Why didn’t Frazier make the adjustments earlier on in the season when it became apparent that the four man rush wasn’t working?
Is it just stubborness and a reluctance to deviate from a system. The Vikings were terrible at making adjustments during games throughout the season. That has me a litttle concerned if Frazier is given the head coaching job going forward.

There is some very good young offensive linemen in this years draft and we can’t afford to miss out on some of them. Wish there was a way to acquire some more draft picks with the draft looming just around the corner, coupled with the threat of a work stoppage and uncertainty whom the Vikings will resign in the way of their free agents can make for a very long anxious off season for us fans. In response to those who think we should tank the game , you never want too promote losing at any level of play. The draft is not an exact science and this years crop is very deep in all areas of need for the Vikings in all the rounds, so win the the game first and then worry about the draft strategy and free agency!

i noticed people asking about this new WR we stole from the bears ….

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/juaquin-iglesias?id=80650

I posted this on the last blog but i guess some people missed it , so here it is again WR – Jauqin Iglesisias, if you look at his weaknesses it doesnt look like he really has one …

  13. By Shawn on Jan 1, 2011 | Reply

Jauquin ” Phoenix Julio ” Iglesias?

  14. By Shawn on Jan 1, 2011 | Reply

We actually have 3 WR from that draft now … Percy Harvin, Juaquin Iglesias, and Freddie Brown who we took off the Bengals practice squad …. heres his info …

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/freddie-brown?id=238517

his list of weaknesses is scary though

  15. By 4eversteve on Jan 1, 2011 | Reply

Juaquin Iglesias is a possession type receiver who was one of the star receivers last years senior bowl. The Vikings were looking to draft him , but were beaten to the punch by the Bears in he draft. I guess the knock on him was his inability to pick up the bears offense, so I’m not expecting to much in the way of contribution in this last game. He could turn out to be a nice replacement for that third round pick that we lost to the Patriots in the Moss trade debacle. Man I’m still angry about that!

  16. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

yea me 2 … i am so angry chilly cut him !!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

@4eversteve … if hes a possesion guy that means he can catch, so hes already better than Berrian and Baskett … 2 more chilly debacles

  18. By 4eversteve on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

I think you are right Shawn in both cases with Berrian and Baskett , I’m hoping that we can come out of this draft with a couple of steals, time will tell whether Childress was given to much credit for drafting which I think is the case or maybe not enough , doubtful!

  19. By animal26 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

I just hope we don’t release Berrian. We have to trade him for anything. I think we can get somewhere between a 4th (really pushing it) and a 7th round pick for him. I’m sure the vikings can get some team to bite on him.

  20. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Frazier has made 3 moves that Im really excited about … Lorenzo Booker has already had some production for us and then Brett Homar err Rhett Bomar and this WR – Juaquin Iglesias … I wish football was year round lol

I think our scouting staff is more to credit than Chilly and i guess time will tell

  21. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

@animal26 … if he wasnt paid as much as he is you might be right but nobody will bite with his salary

  22. By animal26 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

I actually think their is at least 3 teams that we might bite on him. The Bengals, 49ers, and the Seahawks. I know I might sound crazy for saying this, but I’m trying to be optimistic.

  23. By animal26 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

    there are*

  25. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

@Shawn – I’m with you on two moves (Iglesias and Booker) but I’m not expecting much of anything out of Bomar. I’d be happy if he or Ramsey is good enough to provide us with depth as a #3 QB behind Webb, and a free agent that we get in the off-season. But I’m most excited about Booker because I’ve already had a couple of games to see what he’s capable of. Maybe the other two will get a chance to increase my excitement as well, because at first I was pretty doubtful about a RB that was cut by the Eagles.

  26. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

I understand but who wants to pay a guy 5+ million for 25 catches besides chilly …. i am sure most teams think a 4th – 7th rounder could catch 25 pa’sses

but keep hoping lol … i hope your right

  27. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Are the Bengals losing TO and 85 this year? Sounds like they just might be desperate for a WR….maybe they’ll be willing to throw a 6 or 7 our way…

  28. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Shawn – let’s look at the positive spin that our GM will be putting on the sales pitch: Last year Berrian caught 55 pásses, AND he holds the all-time record for the longest reception in NFL history….this year was just a fluke, as the entire team was falling apart. ;)

  29. By animal26 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

thats what I’m saying purpleparody. They are the best chance we’ve got to get anything for berrian.

  30. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

@purpleparody … lol i know my first thought was great another Eagle cast off wheres chilly hiding … something about Bomars scouting report makes me think he has a huge upside and may start as our #3 but potential to develop …. and I think Iglesias makes the team at least as a numer 6WR aka Basketts spot again the scouting report makes me think over a couple years he could be a #3-4

  31. By animal26 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

and yes, its looking very likely that the Bengals are getting rid of those 2 cancers. I think they are the best team to bite on berrian

  32. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

look im with you guys …. I HOPE but …

  33. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

PLUS nearly two thirds of his catches are for a first down! You just have to throw the ball his way twice every set of downs and you’re all-but guaranteed to never see a 4th down! What more could you possibly ask for?

  34. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Man….I’m starting to feel like I should be working the trade negotians for this club!

  38. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Yea me too Shawn. Unfortunately Chilly made such a horrible end to his short month here that I doubt Moss is willing to consider coming back our way for a third time.

  39. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Wow – I was just looking at a list of “notable” WRs who’s contracts are over at the end of the season, and out of the 37 mentioned players 5 of them have been a Viking at some point in the past year.

Moss and Rice are no-brainers, but somehow they felt it worth mentioning Reynaud, Lewis and Baskett also! Reynaud might be worth mentioning at the end, but the other two should feel lucky that they aren’t on a practice squad.

  40. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

I think Frazier has the kind of personality to deal with him … imagine

    WR Depth

    1.Rice
    2.Harvin
    3.Moss
    4.Camarillo
    5.Iglesias
6.and either a draft pick or Jaymar Johnson

but as long as we win, Ill be happy with whatever coach does

I think greg lewis would be a good number 6 ….

  42. By Shawn on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

but hes surely not a 3 or 4 like chilly used him

  43. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

I just didn’t like what I saw out of Lewis. Outside of the first ball he caught last year (I’m sure that nobody needs a description to remember it) he has barely done a thing beyond acting as a decoy WR since putting on a Viking uniform. Yes he’s made a catch here and there, but I see him fail as many plays as he doesn’t.

  44. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Oh yea, I forgot to mention another free agent WR who is out there right now! Our good ol’ buddy Mr. Troy Williamson! You all remember, he’s the guy who uses his arms as a basketball rim for the QB, and he sure makes it look easy for the QB to tickle-the-twine from the far side of the court!

Now that Childress has been off the team for over a month, I wonder if they’ve found the time yet to, as Williamson put it “meet at the 50-yard line and go at it!”

lol was williamson a mike tice guy? i think he was

  46. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Yes, Troy was Tice’s first project. He was an early first round pick who was supposed to replace Moss. He did a good job of beating the defenders down the field, but the problem was that he never learned how to play football after getting downfield.

  47. By PurpleParody on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Sorry – Troy was Tice’s final project – drafted in 2005 and Tice was let go at the end of that season.

Nice article, but someone said the Bears released him because he could not understand their offense? If that’s true, it gives me some doubt. I am sure the Vikings brought him in because they know something we don’t. Is he a rookie? I just scanned the article– looks like he is young.

Wondering if the Vikings going forward will try to protect themselves against what I like too call the {Berrian Factor} In the future , contracts in the league may include clause for players who are nonproductive an on the injury report every time someone sneezes in their direction, with the CBA talks being negotiated, I would think that this would be an area of concern at the meetings for the owners they could have Mr. Wilf address the owners having had to deal with this problem first hand would make him some what of an expert on the matter. To the owners if successfully negotiated. feel free to call it the{ Berrian Factor} In fact here an idea Zygi you have contributing to the Bernard Berrian charity fund all year long, you should be able to write this off on your taxes in 2011 under charitable contributions!

Moss is poison. He didn’t do much at all for the Titans as far as I can tell. Lots of nonchalant trots up the sidelines as usual.

  81. By Arrow86 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

4everSteve: Your post is very insightful. As much as I get attached to my favorite players, Berrian is a drain on payroll. Most players have the pride that it is their name on the back of the jersey and they don’t want to leave us booing them. But I would rather see contracts based more on incentives with some steps for years of experience. But the money thrown at 1st round picks these days is outrageous. Plus better players that have been in the league are getting paid less than the rook with the baseball hat. It does need to change.

  82. By Arrow86 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Snoose: Right now Moss has no swagger. He has been a poison, but he’s been more than humbled. He’d be a great pickup if you could give him a minimal salary that is heavy on incentives. I do feel he’s going to be willing to listen more to coaching after his experiences of this season. If the Pats win the Super Bowl, he’ll sprint every play next year with tears in his eyes.
