Vikings Sign QB Rhett Bomar

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 21, 2010 – 6:04 pm

The Vikings made a roster move on Tuesday, signing QB Rhett Bomar from the Giants practice squad.

To make room for Bomar, the Vikings waived QB R.J. Archer.

Bomar was a 5th-round pick of the Giants in 2009 and played college football at both the University of Oklahoma and Sam Houston State.

That is interesting Shawn– Vikes have third highest salary payout and the Patriots at 12-2, most likely hosting the AFC championship game are the third lowest as far as salaries. Motivation, coaching and team chemistry— you got to want it, have a plan, and execute– money alone won’t buy happiness.

Been a Viking fan since 1970. So bad playing, terrible game plans and the curse are not new. We did not look like a team with nothing to lose against the Bears. No on side kicks, no fake field goals or punts. no going deep even tho the recievers had a big edge on the frozen field. We played the usual conservated game we do all the time. you would think that cutting loose and having fun would have been the call. Against the eagles this sunday wich team will so up? the nothing to loose or the ridged conservatives. By the way, if I got over a million for each game they would have to have carried me off the field. It seems as if the team gives up when farve leaves? shame they did not keep Sage huh? Okiewan

DEREK, I watched most of the game versus the Bears. Now I wish I hadn’t.

I’ve cooled since yesterday, but still feel that we need offensive linemen the most.

Not only do we lack quality offensive linemen, we lack DEPTH.

Yes, you could say the same about d-backs, but I feel our d-line will be good enough to go with some individual improvements by the young d-backs.

Yes, we need a veteran starting QB. But linemen come first. Why have a QB if there is no one to block?

  30. By Titus on Dec 21, 2010 | Reply

Fred, I agree– plus our defense is good enough if they know the offense will score and keep them off the field so they can rest.

Fred, it takes a lot of discipline to do it indoors– at least for me– let me ride around Lake Minnetonka, or out to Stillwater, and you have to drag me away from the bike. We need football players that push till they cannot stand up, so game time, they are rock solid and dominate.

I like the butt-kicker, but Billick is pretty hard-nosed — what Billick brings is a brain, like you said– you know he would do what needs to be done — we would not be blogging after every game wondering why the coaches have no clue. We definitely need a veteran QB, not only to help us win immediately, but to groom a future QB, whether Webb or whoever. It is a mistake to put a rookie in as a starter– look at Culpepper– I think his growth was forever stunted by Denny Green’s decision– he could have been one of the greats (possibly).

Only a Childress could come up with that idiocy – don’t care how good a special teams guy he is, he i son the field for maybe 12-15 plays a game… Berrian has been my biggest bone to pick – THE example of over-priced trash. Watch us beat the Eagles. From what I have seen over the years, that is the MO of the Vikings– they look horrible and then play a brilliant game creaming the cream of the crop. You get called out in presser, your days are numbered…. not sure what happened to what used to be a pretty decent opportunitist/hitter…. This year he was hitting like Dal Maxville or Mario Mendoza…. Bad and no excuses. Was the difference in Favre this year related to the O-line?

That was exactly the IT this season…. Favre has one of the quickest releases in NFL but STILL could not get it out – he had less than 3 seconds to find his receiver and deliver….. If you are WR, try and get open on 12-15 yd pattern in under three seconds…… So even the interceptions are due to Favre needing to throw one step too soon in instances because the line was SO BAD. Anthony Herrera had the best season of all of them, and only two years ago he was depth chart fodder…. Hutch laid one this year too – Favre has 8 stitched courtesy of that “all-pro”… The O-line is where it starts and stops and sadly we stopped all year long!

  201. By mr smiff on Dec 21, 2010 | Reply

Sanders could squat 1000 pounds, and had thighs thicker than the linemen.

The guy who best supports your argument would be Chris Johnson of the Titans.

I vote, Kings and Warriors….. Vikings could use a little bit of warrior in them… Anyone remember Karl Kassulke???? Ronnie Lott before there WAS a Ronnie Lott….. Karl should have made our 50 best, but a career shortened by motorcycle accident…. We could use a guy like that right now!

Shawn was talking about WRs taking the pressure off of the QBs. We are talking about teamwork here.

And if the Vikings score touchdowns, the line is motivated.

    or is Ask Jeeves incorrect?

  244. By mr smiff on Dec 21, 2010 | Reply

I believe we are all in agreeance here. We need a new o-line. It’s something we need to at least begin to work on by draft day, otherwise we can have a John Elway/Eli Manning problem, whereby we pick a qb in the 1st round, only to have him refuse to sign on to the team. I wouldn’t be surprised if Matthew Stafford now has second thoughts about joining the Lions. Sanchez is NOT better than him, but he’s having the better career right now. the difference? THE O-LINE.

FAVRE MAKES 1 MILLION A GAME.

Statistically Favre and T-Jack have essentially the same QB rating this year. Also each wins when playing against a team with a losing record and lose against teams with a winning record.

What’s my point? We’d probably have the same record as we do now with T-Jack and Sage starting instead of having Favre this year. Yes, that’s a 16 million dollar mistake by Hutch, Longwell, Jared, Spielman, Chilly, and Ziggy.

    @Just The Facts

would they have had the same record last year..um no
what u said is prob true but its not because of anything Favre has done

  271. By animal26 on Dec 22, 2010 | Reply

Just the facts. It doesn’t matter about jacksons QB ratting. he played clean up duty for favre last year. Of course he played well. The opposing teams were already mentally defeated. any QB can beat a mentally defeated team.

I think it is time to call in the ball boys. they most likely play better. I have been playing football since i was a little boy. I can play QB for the VIKINGS. I can bomb the ball 62 yards down the field. I am pretty fast as well. I know the play book pretty good as well. I am 6’1 220 pounds. They said Favre suffered a small concussion no that was just an excuse for him to leave the game. I think the VIKINGS need to replace McKinney and Loadholt. Lets face it the best offensive line man is Steve Hutchenson and Herra. Both of them are hurt. The Vikings will most likely sign Kevin Kolb or Donovan McNabb as our QB next year. They should sign them both and let Webb be the third string QB. Webb still has alot of growing up to do. Webb should be used as our wildcat QB. He reminds me of Vince Young alot. I think Young needs to be a second string QB. I never really liked Young. He didnt do well in Texas when he won that national title. He wasn’t ready to be a starter in the NFL. I think Webb has potential to be in the future. Well i think we should shut Vick down and i hope Allen just eats him up on Sunday. The only way they will win is in the air. We dont have anyone fast enough to stay with Jackson. Wienfield is old and getting slow. Asher Allen is a loser, i think it was the dumbest thing the Vikings did was drafting him. He cant guard a receiver to save his life. He’s like Hank Baskett and Berrian he cant catch a ball. He has what 2 or 3 interceptions in his career.Frank Walker is a good corner he came from Baltimore. he is at least reliable and knows what he is doing and he is just a little bit faster. then Allen is and he can block and catch the ball to. Well with that said GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS beat those Eagles.

  284. By Woodboat on Dec 22, 2010 | Reply

Jared Allen is one of my favorite players, but I don’t expect him to rack up sacks on Vick this weekend. Our coverage is too poor downfield to give the D Line time to get to him, and he extends plays too well.

Please, people, don’t think for a moment that you could play on sundays. You think Joe Webb looked lost this weekend, just wait ’til you see Alex the Viking become a greasy smear on the Philly 10 yard line… :)

  285. By bucfan99 on Dec 22, 2010 | Reply

Let me add my vote that the O-line sucks. If not for McKinnie, Brett wouldn’t have been hit Monday–probably not against Buffalo, either–at least not so hard.

That said, if Brett isn’t cleared to play against the Eagles, start Rhett Bomar. He may not know the Vikings offense, but then it’s obvious that Joe Webb doesn’t, either–and Bomar’s a pretty accurate passer. I watched him in the Giants’ preseason games and was surprised when they didn’t keep him active and give him a shot at number two there.

Bomar might even end up being the new Brett Favre next year. It’s for sure that neither TJack nor Webb will.

whats wrong with taking a good young qb in the draft why do we continue to sign everyone elses leftovers like rhett bomar and patrick ramsey its time for a new franchise qb lets gooooo

Just read the entire blog. Don’t really need to add anything. As soon as VLAD incinerates about half our team, we may be able to finally play some real football. I’m sure were not going to do any worse. It’s going to be a ride to see whats in our future. Stadium, Coach, team, off season trades and the draft. The Vikings will be back in 2011.
    HAPPY HOLIDAYS

    Alex-

U really said Favre could have come back in the game with a concussion.
He didn’t even have to come out there but he did and you want him to risk future brain damage when he gets hit again because he can’t get blocked

You guys are funny. These salaries have nothing to do with how much they make. Contracts are not setup to be set pay in almost all cases. AP can make a lot more by getting good stats. Which you can see he does get good stats, so he did not make what this site showed.

Very sad to pick up somone who ruined his team’s entire chances of winning a Nat’l Championship. If he was such a catch, why didn’t the Giants keep him over SR who the Vikes let go?
