Kluwe Kicking His Way To Pro Bowl?

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 9, 2010 – 12:11 pm

We regularly promote Pro Bowl voting on vikings.com to give fans every chance possible to cast their votes. We also occasionally suggest which Vikings players might be particularly worthy of your Pro Bowl vote. The point is not to tell you who should vote for; rather we’re simply making the case for a player who might not otherwise garner the attention appropriate for his performance.

With that being said, Vikings P Chris Kluwe is a player who gets my Pro Bowl vote and I encourage you to vote for him, too.

Punting in the NFL is not about booting it as far as possible. It’s about winning the field position battle, and the Vikings punt team is doing just that. While Kluwe ranks 12th in gross punting average (44.5), he ranks 3rd in the more important net average category (43.3). This means Kluwe is doing a great job of putting hang time on his kicks and it also means the Vikings punt coverage team is doing a nice job of containing returners. Opposing teams average just 3.5 yards per return against Kluwe and Co., which is tied for #1 in the NFL.

On top of that, Kluwe has had 18 of his 36 punts downed inside the 20 and he’s had 12 punts fair caught by opponents. These are all very good numbers and they’re worthy, in my opinion, of him garnering Pro Bowl votes.

Gruden, Reeves, Fox, Vermiel, and Ewbank all had at least one team in the super bowl. Childress in just 4.5 years already has a better record.

Kluwe is always great! I will vote many times for him, also Adrian Peterson. Sundays game was totally incredible how Brett, Percy, Shiancoe, Adrian, Greg, Bernard, Jared, all of the Vikings, defense and offense stepped it up to win. No refs took it away with bad calls. Congratulations to the whole Vikings team! Brett, I have never seen anyone fight so hard for their team, especially with all of your injuries! Thank you for being such a great leader!

Chilly has also had a way better team in his first 4.5 years than any of those coaches had in theirs. Chilly has single handedly turned a Super Bowl caliber team into a 3-5 team. If you need proof Chilly’s an idiot go watch last years NFC championship game and see the mistakes he made.

When someone has to lash out, swear, and belittle others, it is a sure sign of insecurity– when you cannot debate an issue, then you resort to swearing. A sign of frustration because one lacks proper communication skills? Perhaps.
Childress has a winning record and he is very new to head coaching. A good coach– PERIOD. End of argument.

We have a great win when our team fights hard to the end and wins and you guys just put down Childress! Enjoy the win and stop being so darn negative and get behind our team! We have some magnificent players on our team and they showed they still have it like last year! Sidney will be back so we should be a lot better! Kluwe, you are always great!

Kluwe has greatly improved. A few years ago it seemed he was always punting for average. A lot of touchbacks, and worse. He punted to the Bush’s and Hesters when their was a perfectly good old man looking to spot the ball on the sideline. Much improved, great performance in pinning the Cards deep on Sunday. The weather may stay nice enough to help the Vikes out as their will still be some mild weather in Chicago for Sunday, then we play most of our toughest games at home. Or in milder climates.

Wow! I never thought I’d read a Vikes Blog with Weeb Ewbank in it! HA! That’s really digging in the archives! Is he a candidate for Chilly’s job? HA! Have some fun folks, let’s all enjoy this week and be ready for an exciting game in Chicago Sunday.

Kluwe absolutely has my ProBowl votes. As fans lets try to send him, Farwell, and the obvious picks (including Greenway).

As for the Childress issue… firing the head coach at this point in the season would be the worst possible thing for this team. As of right now, we’re still in the race for NFC North (we’ve got a lot of work, but we’re still in it). Going into the next two weeks against divisional opponents, we’ve got a big chance at making it easier. If we can walk away with two wins after the next two games, we’ll be looking a lot better.

As for the people who want Childress fired… I’m fairly certain you will have your wish after the end of this season. Regardless of performance from the HC, if the fans and the players want the coach gone, the coach is going to be gone.

Let’s all stop the negative comments and let the professionals do their jobs. The first thing hopeless fans of a loosing squad say is, “Fire the coach.” We’re all better than that.

Oh, and Brian you must be kidding me. I don’t think we can blame Chilly for the performance at the NFC championship game. When the players can’t hold on to the ball it’s the coach’s fault? Come on, now. Along with questionable ball spotting on part of the referees, the turnovers came and F’ed us. A game that close with that many turnovers on our part means a lot of things good were happening.

That being said: I think we should all be proud of our team’s ball security this year (except for Favre, but we all know he throws picks).

why don’t we have Kluwe drop kick Chilly to Green Bay

  23. By fire childress on Nov 10, 2010 | Reply

The Childress Issue -do you really think the vikings can win the next 8 games with Chilly as head coach? thats what we have to do to secure a playoff spot. if we drop one game, thats not going to be a guaranteed playoff spot

  24. By Brian on Nov 10, 2010 | Reply

The Childress Issue, I have a question for you. Who called the timeout towards the end of the game and then sent 12 men on the field directly after the timeout? That would be Childress. You can try to blame the players but it was Childress who called the play and sent the 12 men on the field. So I would say it was Childress’ fault for the 12 men on the field penalty.
