A Few More Notes From Monday’s Press Conference

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 8, 2010 – 3:30 pm

We’ve touched on several topics since the Vikings recorded a thrilling 27-24 overtime win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, from the warrior-like performance by Percy Harvin to the quiet dominance of the Vikings defense.

But there’s so much more to talk about and we’ll touch on a few more topics in this blog entry with some help from head coach Brad Childress’ press conference. Childress met with reporters for several minutes early Monday afternoon and he ultimately answered 25 questions. Here are a few important notes we jotted down…

Kluwe Kicking Well
Childress took time to mention specifically that P Chris Kluwe is playing well through the first 8 games.

“The guy that’s playing unbelievably now is Chris Kluwe,” Childress said. “That guy is kicking the ball lights out. It doesn’t make any difference what the numbers show. It’s just a matter of how many they’re getting a chance to legitimately return and how many he’s sticking down there where they have fully 80 or 90 yards to go. You can’t put a premium on that, particularly in field position games like that.”

We’ve discussed Kluwe’s solid play on several occasions here on the vikings.com Blog, but he continues to play well and impress. His gross punting average is 44.5, which is 12th in the NFL, but effective punting in the NFL is about hang time, net average and return yards allowed. I don’t have a way to measure hang time, but Kluwe ranks 3rd in net average at 43.3 yards and the entire punt coverage group ranks #1 in the NFL in allowing just 3.5 yards per return. On top of that, Kluwe has put 18 of his 36 kicks inside the 20, helping the Vikings gain an edge in the field position battle.

No-Huddle Offense Looked Good
I answered a question from a reader in today’s Monday Morning Mailbag about how effective the Vikings offense was in the no-huddle during the 4th quarter and whether the no-huddle might be something the Vikings try against Chicago this week. I don’t know if that’s something the Vikings will try, but Childress did tell reporters on Monday that the no-huddle is something the Vikings practice regularly and it’s also something Favre clearly looks comfortable executing.

Childress was also asked who calls the plays when the team goes no-huddle.

“It’s both,” Childress explained, saying that coaches will send a play to Favre when the ball goes out of bounds. “He has got a menu, as do we, that we practice for the two-minute, and sometimes we’ll trick his memory and there are times where he’s got to do it on his own.”

Infirmary Report
Childress was asked the status of several injured players, including Harvin and T Phil Loadholt. Harvin has been dealing with the injured ankle, of course, and Childress said Harvin will be sore but is also “no worse for the wear.” Childress said Loadholt is going to be fine; he left the game in the 4th quarter but came right back onto the field. S Jamarca Sanford tweaked a hamstring and Childress indicated that would be a day-to-day situation for this week.

Return of Rice
Perhaps the most asked question the last couple of weeks has been “When is Sidney Rice coming back?” The answer is still “I don’t know.” But it sound like Rice is getting closer and closer.

“He’s had some good practices out here,” Childress commented, “it’s just a matter of can you play wide-open and play in an NFL football game? It’s one thing to practice. It’s another thing when you’re going to get tackled to the ground.”

Rice has looked good in practice the last couple of weeks and he looked sharp while working out in pre-game workouts on Sunday. Time will tell when he can return; I’m cautiously optimistic it’ll be this week against the Bears, but the smart money might be next week at home against Green Bay. Stay tuned.

Big-Play Bernard
It was pleasing to see Bernard Berrian become such an important factor in the offense. He had 9 receptions for 89 yards on Sunday and came up with 3 clutch grabs in the 4th quarter and overtime. Childress mentioned on Monday that Berrian had a good practice week leading up to the Arizona game and that his chemistry with Favre looked particularly sharp.

“I saw Brett throwing it as well as he has thrown it all year long in that Thursday practice,” Childress said. “Very live arm, very accurate and then Bernard was kind of right there with him. Not that the other guys weren’t, but you could see him have a good week of practice. Both of those guys. It wasn’t surprising to see it carry over to Sunday.”

Mike you forgot to mention the question about the latest hot topic concerning hugs from Childress. That is why Childress was dumped on by the sports shows and media, they thought he was being sarcastic in his answer towards Favre. Childress needs to lighten up and joke more around with the guys, crack more smiles and then people won’t think he’s being sarcastic. I posted some advise for Chilly in the last two blogs. Any way you can bring Brad’s attention to it? Seriously, will be of some good benefit to him if he reads it.

Here it is Mike, why don’t you fire off an email to Brad with the link to this blog. I know it will help the situation with him and the guys.

Been some hype surrounding Childress’s comment about Favre needing a hug. The thing is that people took it as being a swipe at Favre in Childress’s typical sacarasm.

THAT IS CHILDRESS’S BIGGEST PROBLEM. HE HAS SUCH A DRY SENSE OF HUMOR AND HE DOESN’T JOKE AROUNG ENOUGH WITH HIS PLAYERS. THEY DON’T TRUST HIM, HE IS TOO BUSINESS LIKE AND DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO CONNECT WITH PLAYERS.

LISTEN CHILDRESS, FAVRE HAS A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. PLAYERS, FANS & REPORTERS LOVE THAT ABOUT HIM. WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE AFTER HEARING WHAT FAVRE SAID IN HIS CONFERENCE ABOUT NOT GETTING A HUG AND JOKING THAT HE NEEDS ONE, WAS GO UP TO FAVRE IN THE LOCKER ROOM OR IN PRACTICE AND COME UP BEHIND HIM AND HUGGED HIM IN FRONT OF THE PLAYERS AND SAID WITH A SMILE ON YOUR FACE…. “HEY I HEARD YOU WANTED A HUG FROM ME”

AND DO IT IN A JOKING WAY WITH FAVRE. HE WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY AND SO WOULD HAVE THE OTHER PLAYERS. BRAD, YOU NEED TO CONNECT WITH THESE PLAYERS. NOT SAYING YOU HAVE TO BE THEIR FRIEND OR ANYTHING (BUT THAT WOULDN’T BE A BAD THING EITHER) BUT JUST HAVE THEIR BACKS, BE A COOL COACH AND NOT SO SERIOUS ALL THE TIME. JOKE AROUND WITH THEM, TAKE THEM ALL OUT EAT OR TAKE THEM GOOFY GOLFING OR SOMETHING.

BASICALLY, LIGHTEN UP, LISTEN TO THEIR IDEAS, AND HAVE THEIR BACK.
YOU DO THAT FOR THEM, AND THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE YOUR BACK AND PLAY THEIR A S S E S OFF FOR YOU.

TRUST ME BRAD, TRY THIS APPROACH AND YOU WILL HAVE A BETTER SITUATION WITH YOUR GUYS

P.S. Yeah I know Mike, fat chance of you doing that. lol

My best to Rice, man we need u so hurry back. Percy way to fight. Favre didnt give up and that saved r season. one bad side, Why did Peterson get only ten carries during regulation? As soon as we gave him the ball he exploded for 30 yrds. Adrian Peterson is the base of this football team. when we give the ball to AP we score. We do all like scoring …..right?

  11. By Bruce on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

chaos, the best way to score with AP is running a no huddle passing game which moves everyone back and then you hand it off to AP and he breaks a big run.

  12. By Bruce on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

It was good to hear Brad say that they might run the no huddle more often.

  13. By purplehaze on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

thats true, the up-tempo of no huddle gives the vike players less time to think and dwell on the playcall; their good enough to play on instinct, quick reaction time and just plain execution

  14. By tony on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Try throwing screens/dump-offs to AP more. Anyone notice it works every time??/ So, why do we do it once every other game?? Sucky coaching. And hey, just think what would happen if you had AP pull up on a sweep, and PASS rthe ball? Receiver would be wide open.!!! Also, the guy’s nick-name is ALLLLL DAYYYYYYY. Give him 27-35 carries, EVERY game. L T used to kill teams with that when he was in San Diego. What a concept!! Imaginative offense coaching.. And defense..ever hear of the word,,,BLITZ????

What Childress is still employed, take a page from the Cowboys today and get rid of him his time has come an gone. We need new blood Frazier will revitalize the team.

  19. By Frederick Jones on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Fran Tarkenton used to throw to both running backs back in the 70’s. Apparently it doesn’t work any more, because nobody does it. I like to see AD get the ball on a pass too. If they did it all the time, it probably wouldn’t work, and we might see someone go the other way for a quick six. It might be something Favre doesn’t do well. He has indicated that the flare pass is a tough pass for him to throw.

More screens, quick slants ( how do suppose Jerry Rice had a million catches, exactly) let them try and break one, if not they still are moving the ball.
When down on the goal line, why do we insist on running straight up the middle, I will never figure that out.
Get creative, it seems we use the same 5 plays every game, every series.
Along with all the of this have fun and gel as a team, you aren’t going anywhere with all your drama and power tripping.
The emotion in Brett’s eyes, the determination of AP, the heart of Percy, the intensiveness of Shanc and the beast coming out of the defense prior and after the TD that tied it up, it was an awesome sight for this diehard, just like last year.
All I can say is play like that, there is no reason you can’t win the rest of them and put yourselves in contention for the big picture.

save the drama for your mamma and play ball

  25. By NovaScotiaVike on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

when choosing a head coach between two with basically the same winning percentages, one would have to look for something that sets them apart. I believe a SB trophy does just that.

  26. By Frederick Jones on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

In addition to Childress being ahead of Gruden on the all-time win list, remember HOW Gruden won his first SB. Tony Dungy built the Tampa Bay Bucs from the ground up. Many people said that it was really Tony’s team in that Super Bowl. Actually I think Gruden is an excellent coach. My point is that Brad Childress is also an excellent coach. He had a bad start in Minnesota. Get over it. He won’t be fired this season. So get on the train, or get outta the way!!!

  27. By Frederick Jones on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

It is frustrating seeing a football team constantly running the ball up the gut, and getting nowhere. It’s difficult to pass, or run sweeps down there near the goal line. So they might think the easiest way to score is going from point A to point B. Alot of teams do that.

  28. By NovaScotiaVike on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

The play I hate is that double reverse they run. Sure once in a while someone will break one. Most of the time it winds up being a big loss ( 8 yards or more ).

I think when you have lost alot of games, and you have to give a presser, it’s probably easy to say alot of things you shouldn’t. I think it is remarkable how many NFL coaches can keep their cool in that situation.

  33. By Frederick Jones on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Jerry Jones said this is the first time they have made a mid-season change in head coaches in Dallas. He probably has been with them almost 25 years! If you want to see a coach fired, it usually happens at the end of the season. That’s a good bet.

  34. By 4eversteve on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Zygi don’t miss out on this golden opportunity to replace Childress, whether it is Frazier or a big name coach such as Dungy or Gruden or Cowher and maybe even Billicke sorry about the spelling on the last two coaches. Man you need to make move while you still can. The team wants it the fans want it and deep down you want to make it happen even if this was your hand pick guy when you bought this team but with any good business man knows he is not getting good return on their investments it time to cut their losses, Childress must go!

Yes, Frederick Jones, it is highly, highly unlikely Childress will be replaced during this season– we know that– what our fellow bloggers fail to realize is how much that knowledge factors into our support of Childress– he is here for the season, let’s stand behind the whole team– we still have a shot.
To think it helps the team to know everyone thinks their head coach should be replaced is ludicrous– it invades their psyche and is only a cancer to their minds. Let’s support who we have — I want a Superbowl Victory — it is about time!

Childress brought up the fact that the players stepped up and finished a pretty poor game. I was in the metrodome yesterday and there wasn’t much to cheer about until that last 4 min of the game. Everyone was holding their breath waiting for a ball to be dropped or an interception to happen. The players just didn’t quit. That is not to say Childress’ game plan worked. for the first 56 min it pretty much sucked. I was in there yellnig Fire Childress. There was a time that the entire dome was chanting. They started the music machine to drown us out. I still agree it’s time to be done with the man. The players are not playing for him . I don’t have a clue what game Fredrick Jones was watching, but Childress is not in control. Just my thoughts

This year? I had two days of a hundred or more– during the summer I can do about 60-80 in one ride– but if I want a hundo, I do like to take a pit stop at home and refuel with a real meal– those sports bars and gatorade only take you so far.
It take a lot of time, though– that is the problem– I didn’t have the time today, but it was so nice and I figured this may be the last day to ride like that — especially in shorts!

  227. By BE SANE & SERIOUS on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Yeah, Longwell is a sure kicker and I love the fact that every time you call his name, you confess a good kick from far away– yes names matter. I am kind of glad the kids are in bed, because they would start their sitcom again.

Be Sane & Serious, I do not mind their sitcoms, but sometimes I wish they would back up their arguments with true facts, and statistics. And I do not enjoy the ripping of the physical features of a person. It doesn’t add anything to their humor, or prove any point. And it reminds me of grade school or junior high when there were kids who called names, and tried to make fun of what somebody looks like.

Does anybody remember who Heath Farwell flipped the ball to on the Kluwe punt, where the Vikings put the Cardinals on their own 1 or 2 yard line?

  230. By Conner on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Whether Chilly is horrible or great, was it me, or did Favre and his receivers have a crisp efficient passing game. He passed to multiple receivers. He release the ball and put the ball right on Schiancoe for the tying TD before Schiancoe even headed for the post. He led receivers to openings and we had a ton of YAC. A.P. ran a good curl pattern. I had no idea that was A.P.’s second ever touchdown reception. Yes, Arizona is 3-5, step up against the Bears, win your first road game of the season! Build on your positives! THE DOME WILL BE THE PACKER HOUSE OF PAIN IN TWO WEEKS!!!!

  231. By Conner on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Farwell flipped it to Kenny Onatolu. Other teammates kept Onatolu’s face mask from hitting the goal line, which would have been a touchback. A single play with a great example of hustle and teamwork. Too bad that kick return right after our early touchdown was so poorly covered by many of these same guys. Someone must have got out of their lane responsibility or was re-routed.

Fire Childress: I am less than impressed with what I see in decision making from our head coach. But what I take away from all the turmoil that Childress really brought on the Vikings over the past two weeks, is that Favre has his MOJO back, and 52 other guys feed off of that no matter who wears the headset and carries the laminated sheet with the uncreative 4th and 1 plays on it. How much better could Favre and Harvin play if they had fresh legs? The defensive line became active again in the 4th quarter. It will be a tough road ahead, but that can also make the reward of a strong finish all the sweeter. The past two weeks of media circus should have centered around Shanahan / McNabb, and “How bout them COWBOYS!” Chicago has a much more difficult time preparing this week for the Vikes than they would have last week. For one, they went to Canada and struggled mightily to beat the Argonauts. We showed many more options that need to be addressed in our passing game. The line is gradually showing improvement! To Chilly’s credit today he was fully complimentary to Favre in his play calling in the no-huddle and that the coaches just prompt or suggest when the clock stops. These comments start to build equity with Favre or any quarterback.

i agre on the playcalling, let Farve call the plays, and make sure Chilly has plenty of Gum

Firechild, I am not going to tell you my net worth because of one simple truth: True wealth does not flaunt it. You must be nouveau riche, trying to catch up with the Joneses. What a joke– people with real money never talk about it. You give yourself away. When you get to the higher levels, you never disclose what you make, nor your net worth, especially on a public forum such as a blog like this– do not fool yourself, there are many hackers who can easily find your true identity, If you did come into some peanut change, a word of advice from true old school: keep your income to yourself– if you learn anything, in all seriousness, keep your lips shut on that– one other thing, money does not equate success.

It was a spectacular come-from-behind win, but I doubt much of the credit deserves to land in Chilly’s lap. Chilly had a lot less to say about the plays that were called during the no-huddle offense. That’s likely a big reason for why we were able to pull off the 2 touchdown effort in the final 5-minutes of regulation.

I heard that Ziggy was patrolling Winter Park all last week, working to instill some confidence into the men for the first time this year. Maybe that had something to do with it. Then again, maybe it had something to do with the fact that it was against a team with a losing record.

We need to start beating teams that are winners too, or we’ll go nowhere. First off on that list: Chicago.

money does equate success. do you know a failing business that has alot of money? i’m not worried about others knowing, when i use a e mail that doesn’t even belong to me. success comes from hard work, a driving desire to be successful, a little luck, and most of all, a brilliant mind

  245. By BE SANE & SERIOUS on Nov 8, 2010 | Reply

Firechild, I don’t know what you are smoking, but please put it down. Money can be a byproduct of success, but does not equate it. Who helps you with your homework?

Wow you guys, give it up. It really doesn’t matter what claims you make in here, if someone is disagreeing with you on issues they’ll just either shun off your claims as immaterial or believe they are further lies.

Why not show the intelligence you are claiming to have (this is to BOTH of you) with witty conversation rather than pointless banter assisted by claims that are out of reference and that can’t even be proven.

4th and 2 in the 1st quarter in Miami, good call to go for it, don’t you think?

  250. By PurpleParody on Nov 9, 2010 | Reply

Only if you don’t trust your kicker, and to be honest I don’t think Brad does. Just look at the stats. There are 30 other kickers in the NFL with more points so far this year.

  251. By fire childress on Nov 9, 2010 | Reply

yeah, Chilly alone cost us 3 games this year. Longwell is a pro-bowl kicker, as long as he gets his trys, too bad chilly doesn’t trust him

  252. By moorevikes on Nov 9, 2010 | Reply

someone said chilly was a proven winner. really? can you honestly look in the mirror and say that without smacking yourself? the things chilly has proved to me: he doesn’t think the min before half time has to be played, he knows how to run the ball 4 times up the middle to try and score a td (there is a left and right side of the field chilly), he knows how to throw the red flag when everyone else seems to know he’ll lose the challenge, he doesn’t know how to throw it when it might help us, he has proven that apparently field goals don’t really put points on the board, he has proven that he can’t inspire, motivate, plan, or adjust (all qualities that proven winners possess). HE NEEDS TO GO

half semester grade F…childress and and most of his staff have failed first half of the season…spielman also has failed in not able to make this team even stronger after last years success…7-1 second half may not be enough to make the playoffs…

  255. By fire childress on Nov 9, 2010 | Reply

yes, the draft was a complete bust. i agree with the grade of F. every single game they play will be a playoff game. can they win 8 playoff games to get to the playoffs? vegas odds would put it at about 7 percent

  256. By fire childress on Nov 9, 2010 | Reply

chilly really put our team in a bind. it’s like he’s trying to move the team to LA all by himself, and he’s doing a pretty good job of it

i agree, a 7-1 record may not be enough. there will be no will card coming out of the NFC north this year

Is Chilly a good coach or not?

Well, last year we came within a single field goal from going to the Superbowl:

Now was this due to Chilly’s “good coaching”

    or

Because Brett Farve, who already was going to be a Hall of Famer, had his BEST YEAR EVER!

Now combine that with AP, Percy, and Rice’s Pro Bowl seasons, the real question is why DIDN’T we go to the Superbowl?

  261. By Bruce on Nov 9, 2010 | Reply

Just an observation Childress. A Blue Ribbon panel just rated the Top 100 players of all time and guess where your quarterback fell on that list? Number #20 ( Ithought he should be higher and Manning lower considering Manning’s O-line and receivers & tight ends over the years) Be that as it may Brad, you have the 20th Best Rated Player in the history of the league. Don’t you think you should let him call the plays more often? You saw what he can do last Sunday. Not only did he bring his team down the field for 3 scores to win the game in the last few minutes, Brett ultimately saved your job. After seeing what Dallas just did to their Head Coach, you really SHOULD GIVE BRETT A HUG!

sorry Fred, your thing you have about Chilys record has a merit. Wade Phillips had a higher winning percentage-34-22, and he was gone yesterday. last year Farve had the best year of his life, and he was calling his own plays. Chilly also cost us the superbowl with 12 men in the huddle. Chilly needs to go now !

here is just a thought on the offense side of the ball when they are in the red zone why do you keep running the ball in I know we have AD but wouldn’t you like to give the opposing defense something more to think about but just using TJack or the rookie qb just on those plays with ability to run & not just hand off or throw it…just something to think about

Fred – It’s worse to be too predictable, which is exactly what Brad’s offense has been for the first half of the season.
