Gerhart, Peterson Next In Line On Kickoff Return

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 4, 2010 – 11:21 am

I’ve never met a RB who didn’t want more touches and both Toby Gerhart and Adrian Peterson are certainly no exception. Peterson has joked on multiple occasions during his weekly press conferences that he’d be okay with 40 or 50 carries a game and Gerhart, a complementary back to Peterson after starring at Stanford, is certainly anxious for more touches.

Though the touches won’t come via QB Brett Favre on a handoff, both Gerhart and Peterson might be in line for more opportunities this Sunday if Percy Harvin is unable to fulfill his role as a kickoff returner. Harvin injured his ankle last week in New England on a 1st-quarter reception. He was able to finish the game but he was held out of practice on Wednesday and his status remains up in the air for this week’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals. And even if Harvin is able to suit up and play, the coaching staff might elect to use him exclusively as an offensive target to save some wear and tear on the ailing ankle.

If Harvin is not returning kicks this Sunday for the Vikings, special teams coordinator Brian Murphy told reporters that Gerhart and Peterson would be next in line. We’ve seen Peterson return kicks in the past for the Vikings – he returned one 53 yards against the Chicago Bears in 2007 to set up an eventual game-winning 54-yard FG by Ryan Longwell.

Time will tell if Harvin will be able to fulfill his role as kickoff returner. If he can’t, the duty will fall into capable hands.

I say just use Gerhart… He barely gets the ball and his brute force may just be good on kickoff returns.

Send chilly out with no pads. That would be the best way to get rid of the horrid little troll of a man.

all of you idiots are wrong about Brad. We need to fire you as fans, not him. The team would be better without your negativity.

I’m a fan in Miami but you beautiful people in Minnesota have the opportunity to let your voices be heard, literally. Chant “Fire Childress” @ the game, boo him all game and bring signs saying “Fire Childress”

Hey fire childress- shut up dude everyone knows childress is a joke hes the worst coach in the nfl out of all 32 teams. How could he let go of moss after a couple of weeks com’on even if he didn’t put up huge numbers he still would draw double teams which opened things up for other players. We need to fire him and let Frazier take over he is a great coach for us and already knows r system he would be a great person for the job. Lets go Fraizer =)

I KNOW, USE CHILIDOG, MAYBE BEING PUMMELLED WILL DO HIM SOME GOOD?!

Hope they fire Chilly and give Leslie Frazier a shot before he goes elsewhere at seasons end. As for Moss what a frickin idiot the league should suspend his butt for throwing that game. As much as I liked they idea when they got him they never got Randy Moss the football player they got Randy Moss the Jacka**

I love that idea! Please fans… take signs that say fire childress! Move frazier to head coach and let him call the defense like lovie in chicago. Then nxt year go get grugen or cowher

Use both Peterson and Gerhart on Kickoffs. Have Gerhart recieve the kick and run it to the far right. Then right before he is hit have him hand it to Peterson and let him run it to the far left. once we get Harvin back we could do it with three players.

  17. By chaos on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

Who r we gonna play at widereciever? Berrian {who sucks} Camirillo {who I never heard of until his touchdown against ?Cowboys?} Baskett {who I still have no clue who the heck he is.} Shiancoe and Klienssasser are monsters at TE. Peterson is the best back in the nfl. but who the heck is going to throw the ball?

  18. By Rick James on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

chaos your suggestion for using both to return the kick was even worse than the idea to use Peterson at all! You do not use your franchise back to return kicks period!!!!

  19. By Joe C on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

here is another suggestion – Play Joe Webb in the secondary – he is a better athlete than every one of our DB’s maybe he can make a play?

  20. By purplehaze on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

CHANT THE PAPER BAG ON THE HEAD STANDBY ISNT BAD AS WELL, THAT AND THE VERBAL ASSAULT WILL TRIP THE PLAYERS OUT…

  21. By Conner on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

Couldn’t Camarillo or Lewis return the kickoff. What about Berrian? Get him some productivity in that area and then work him back into the offensive scheme. I get a little more worried about an Adrian Peterson returning kicks.

  22. By Woodboat on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

Joe Webb had better keep his bags packed. WHEN Childress gets fired for being inept, the NEW coach ( please Cowher or Chuckie) will have a fairly high draft pick after this deplorable season and will go after a high draft QB. Webb will have a shot (T Jackson will be sharing a cab with Childress leaving the compound), but he’ll be behind the 8 ball because he’ll have to compete with the new kid. Playing him anywhere on the field would be a downgrade for the team at this point. He doesn’t have the experience in ANY position to beat out anyone that is starting.

You guys have no idea about the Financial side of football and you fail to see the LOCKOUT coming. They are not going to fire Childress with a Lockout coming. Otherwise, you have to pay him even if there is a lockout. Have you noticed that there are no head coaches fired this year? Dont you think several head coaches should be fired by now.

  24. By Woodboat on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

I agree with you, Conner… oh wait, I don’t lol. Camarillo is too slow for that job, and Berrian has bricks for hands. I find it pretty harsh of you to want to put a physically handicapped citizen like Berrian in harms way on kick off returns. Lewis might do ok, unless he all of the sudden remembers he’s Greg Lewis and drops the ball.

  25. By Woodboat on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

Pete… Lockout or no lockout, you have to pay a fired coach. Their contracts are not like players contracts. The lockout has absolutely nothing to do with Childress/Vikings financial arrangement. They’d owe him and have to pay 9 million regardless. So what? He just threw away over 3 million because his poor little feelings got hurt. Also calc in the lost revenue he’d cost them in merchandising and ticket sales from disgruntled fans if they keep him. Pay the troll his 9 mill and get Cowher or Gruden for next year.

  26. By Woodboat on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

I don’t think there will be a lockout, Pete. There is way too much money to be lost and way to big of a public image hit coming if they do. Look what the strike did to baseball… The NFL is a lot of things, but it isn’t owned by stupid people. The players that play the game aren’t stupid either.

what is with people like you and your negativity!?
yes Childress made a stupid mistake…
    yes he’s made a few of them…
and yes maybe he does need to get fired…
but chanting to fire your own head coach, at home, is just gonna make the Vikings players, organization, and fan base a joke…the laughing stock of the NFL…
dont you think the Vikings have had enough drama in half a season to last them 3 years??
dont ever suggest such a stupid idea ever again…
    your not a true fan…
a true fan would support their team winning, and losing…
