Sidney Rice To Return To Pracitce On Wednesday

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 3, 2010 – 11:18 am

Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress told reporters during his regular Wednesday press conference that WR Sidney Rice would return to practice on Wednesday. Rice remains on the Reserve/PUP list but now the Vikings have a 21-day period to evaluate Rice’s condition while he practices with the team; Rice will not count against the 53-man roster limit during this time.

Childress did not indicate what Rice’s particular status was in terms of playing shape nor did he say when he anticipates Rice to be able to play. But clearly it’s a great sign that Rice will return to practice.

Rice’s return to the lineup will give the offense a shot in the arm as they look to reverse a poor first half of the season and get back into the thick of things in the NFC and the NFC North.

NOTE: An earlier version of this entry stated that the Vikings would take Rice off the Reserve/PUP list today, but that is not the case. Instead, Rice will remain on the PUP list while also returning to practice.

Yes,I believe Rice is about ready to go.Moss wasn’t being productive anyway so vikings weren’t gaining anything here anyways with moss Harvin was stealing the show and what I consider the no#1 reciever.now maybe the 2009 Vikings are back.

I do believe you are on to something. I hope Sid has the fire, passion, and fortitude to justify this fiasco.

We need Sidney! He should have had his surgery sooner so he wouldn’t miss any games. He is 10 times better then Moss. Sidney jumps and fights for the ball. Moss didn’t. Moss didn’t do a thing for the team and we know that Sidney is a great, respectable player that tries hard and gets it done. Brett and the whole Vikings team needs you Sidney!

He is still 2-3 weeks away from getting on the field, so we will see what we can do until then.

Rice is not going to play sunday! He is off the PUP list which means he is eligible to be added to the active roster, that is all. They have 21 days to make a decision on him. The guy just came off crutches like a week or 2 ago. You think he is in good enough shape to play in an NFL game? This move was most likely done to try and save face with the fans. Dont read into it too much. Sidney wont be back on the field until Green Bay comes to town, if he is even ready then! We could have had Moss, Sidney, Percy, Favre and AP on the field at the same time! WTF!!!!

  8. By Stephanie on Nov 3, 2010 | Reply

please Sidney, help us! I hope he’s ready by at least next Sunday against the Bears. He and Brett have a great relationship and always seemed on the same page and had good communication last year. and Sidney is humble and doesn’t give up on plays. Moss was helpful to the offense, but he just didn’t seem to give full effort. I’m sure Brett is thrilled that Sidney is coming off the pup list, considering they have no deep threat at the moment.

we will be 4-12 at best. the season gets easier sure but not much easier. arizona game can go either way, @chi, doubt it, gb @home, don’t think so, @wash, probably not, buf @home, maybe, nyg @home, nope, chi @home, still doubt it, @phi, sorry, and then @det, the way they are playing would not shock me if we lost that one too. why? chilly gets out coached, favre is old (will give opposing team at least one turnover), oline can’t pass block, dline can’t rush a qb, dbs can’t tackle or create turnovers. did i mention chilly will have at least two questionable decsisions a game and he sucks as a head coach, oh yeh we don’t have any wrs

moss may not have gave it every thing he had on every play. but just having him on the field made other teams rethink there game plan.but just think what can the opposing team do when u have moss ,rice, harvin, shanco and peterson lined up across from you and farve slinging the ball.they would be nothing to stop them except chilli!if things dont go chilli way he wines and crys. give us back dennis green and see what kind of offense we would have then.

Even when moss doesnt try he draws double teams opening up the middle for Harvin. So yes Chilly is a complete moron for getting rid of him. Haven’t read all the prior posts, but Rice won’t be back this weekend or even next. They either had to activate him from the PUP list or put him on IR for the season. He’s still at least 2 weeks out, and thats being optimistic. It is also optimistic to think he is going to step on the field and immediately be the player he was last year. IF this team can somehow pull a miracle and make the playoffs, Rice should be able to contribute. This season will be decided well before he can make a serious impact as far as playoffs are concerned.

They will split with the Bears, beat the BIlls the Cardinals. They will beat either Philly or the Redskins (who are rapidly becoming a trainwreck as well). GB and the Giants will probably smack us.

Favre is the same guy that got this team to the championship game last year. He just isn’t getting the help. If you are gonna put every interception on him and not his receivers, then you really need to put down the beer can and actually watch the games.

I’ve been a minn fan for over 25yrs and i read the comments. First of all it is a shame that chilly let moss go, that just goes to tell you how sorry he is. He needs to go. Then I read your comments on sid coming back and that he’s better then moss. Sid couldn’t carry Randy’s joke. As for sid he was an average receiver at best before Brett got here. He made sid the player he is today. What’s he do next year with no QB. And yes Harvin is going to be a great player for a long time, but for now with no moss, his numbers will go down when you don’t have someone who requires double teams, which alouded Harvin to play his normal position in the slot. And yes the defense, which can’t get it done when need be. Where’s the def. pressure? Same front but all of the sudden this year from last year they can’t get it done. This whole team is a mess. I still love this team but feel this team cashed it in for the season and with this moss issue, it just put the majority of the team even further away from believeing in chilly.

It doesnt matter if our passing game improves, our biggest problem is our defense. Lack of pressure on QB, lack of turnovers, we are going nowhere if that doesnt change because our offense will never make up for being behind every game. Our run offense seems alot better this year anyway, bigger lanes, better rush avg for AP. Our aerial attack is alot worse than last year, but a bigger reason than Sidney Rice being out for that is how much worse Favre has been. He is soo much more immobile in the pocket this year. Defenses never ever have to worry about him running as the pocket breaks down, it makes it soo much easier for the D-line, they dont have to maintain gap control and its easier on the LBs as well. If we started Jackson, our offense would run much smother, and I feel the passing game would improve (maybe not in the redzone where Jackson has historically struggled compared with Favre, but maybe he has learned something from him over the last few years)

Vikings Finish 9-6-1 Tying GB at the Metrodoom! and just miss the play offs but with that 7-1-1 finish chili keeps his job.. Next year we dont have Favre and AP gains 1800-2000K yards and the rushing title as the team goes back to ground and pound, the vikings pick up Vick and the airal game becomes staggant and both Vick and AP ground out 8 wins defense looses Ray Edwards, Pat Williams, Leder, and is in the mist of a youth movement with inexperienced safeties(again) and the WLB voided by Leder…. 8-8 gets chili fired!! Bill Cowher comes in and folds us into a 3-4 defense and excitement returns to the Vikings fan base! Sad to see that Chili is going to be arround another year! His horrible trade decisions are costing this team a true future, its hard to look at the next 3-5 seasons and think hey we can compete with the Pack or Bears or even Lions!

Everyone needs to get off the L. Frazier Kick man last year he did well based solely on the talent the defense had! Look at this year and the injury to Griffen is holdin us back a bit… BUT a good Defense coach would scheme up plays for players of the talent level of Greenway, Allen, Henderson, Williams for those guys to get sacks or easier one v one’s to apply that pass rush the Vikings have been missing! He is not an answer he is part of the coaching problem!! IF you to see this you might want to look at the work he’s done or he isn’t doing! The front four arent getting pressure the line needs a better scheme, better dialed up blitz packages, and better coached secondary players that can catch the fn ball when it hits their hands, or chest. These guys play soft and if your a defense coach and your players are playing soft its all on you. Recently I’ve noticed poor play in gag containment again that falls on the coach! L Fraizer is not the answer!.

  55. By Jon on Nov 3, 2010 | Reply

That was not a very wise decision. Childress reacted off impulse and made a poor decision because he couldn’t tolerate the constructive criticism by Randy Moss in regards to his poor play calling and coaching decisions. Childress was aware of the characteristics and personality traits Moss carried as an individual and team player. Therefore, Childress should have been more willing to compensate for that, despite having to deal with the minor behavioral issues from Moss. Sometimes you have to weigh out the good and the bad and ask yourself if having Randy Moss on our team is going to be a more positive asset for the team, or negative? I’m sure we all know the answer to that question. Clearly this is just another bad decision by our coach, one that makes a very negative impact on our team. Now Percy gets double covered and maybe gets a few receptions per games for a total of 30 yards. Favre continues to throw deep to Berrian and get intercepted. Hank Basket can barely catch a pass, and Shiancho becomes and AP become our only chance of making big plays. We might as well Bench Favre and put T. Jack in and let him run for 20 yards every time the receivers aren’t open. This season is a wrap. However, if we had Moss, Rice, Harvin, Lewis, AP, Shank, and Favre, we’re scoring 30 points a game easily. Yes, I said Greg Lewis. He’s a player that can make some plays when the attention is taken off of him. But, so much for that… Thanks Chilly…..

Sidney has more talent in one finger then Moss had in his whole body. Sidney is a very talented, respectable person! It will be great when he gets back in a few weeks. Criticism by Moss is not intended to be constructive, any more than the words of those who once enjoyed spitting on him when he was a kid in West Virginia wished their words to be constructive. As the old Chinise proverb goes, choose your enemies wisely, since these are the people you will become most like. Moss didn’t even taste the food he ranted over Friday that he wouldn’t feed to his dog. His point is the whole world should all be about himself, not to improve the quality of the cuisine for anyone else. He doesn’t ride meter maids on the hood of his car just because he believes they needed a lift somewhere.

I am grinning from ear to ear right now. It is great to hear Sidney is activated, but we do have to be cautious. Hopefully, he’ll start strong and stay strong the rest of the season. It’ll be a few weeks though until I believe he’ll play. People are disappointed in Moss’s production, but he did draw 2 guys on most plays, and pulled them out of the middle of the field. Fischer is not unlike Bellicheck. Fischer isn’t going anywhere and he knows it, so “Randy being Randy” isn’t going to be an option. Our depth at receiver seems to still be an “In your face!” strength of this team. Camarillo was traded for, and had a strong season for the Dolphins last year. Berrian needs to find his focus and he’s a deep threat. Harvin, I can’t begin to describe my mancrush on his skills. Schiancoe, I haven’t seen every minute of every game, but it doesn’t seem like we get the ball into the middle of the field for him. Kleinsasser, seems to have had more receptions than past years. Many of you have more experience playing and coaching than I do. How much of our receivers lack of production a shorter amount of time for Brett, and how much is that Brett has lost some zip on the fastball?

Was Chilly with Philly when T.O. went bazerk? He probably was seeing this thing coming. At least he was finally honest in referring to it as a “Bad decision.” Based on Moss’s past, when he’s with a weak coach and given slack the attitude is front and center. When he’s with a strong coach he gives salutes. It’s really terrible that Moss couldn’t serve as a mentor to Harvin, as Chris Carter seemed to be for Moss. It seemed like once Randy surpassed Carter he wasn’t going to listen to anyone.

Hassan “Real 84″ JOnes: I’m assuming you are the former player. Which is the bigger concern with the defense. Is it that the corners are banged up and not covering as well so the Q.B.’s can get the ball out quicker? Or is it a lack of pressure from the D-line that is giving the Q.B.’s so much time that the receivers are opening up? Anyone is welcome to respond your viewpoint.

I’ll admit I don’t know exactly what is the problem with the Vikes, but I KNOW I can’t stand Childress. I hate just about everything about him and this Moss disaster is the last straw. I tried to tell myself last year that things would get better, tried to convince myself that he’s not that bad….wrong!

  90. By Conner on Nov 3, 2010 | Reply

    A) “Chucky” Gruden would be a great fit right now. But it would cost a fortune to get him out of his current gig.
    B) Vikes will beat Cards, Pack, Split with Bears, Late in the year the Giants usually go soft, so it’ll be a hard fought win. Eagles will be tricky if Vick is running around. Redskins will be a win, as Shanahan has become Chilly’s pen pal. Detroit will be really tough with the improved play of Suh and Stafford pride will win out 21-17 Vikes. Overall record: 8-8 possibly 9-7. 9-7 gets you on the road for a wild card game.

  91. By MTVike on Nov 3, 2010 | Reply

Leslie,s not the answer. His defensive strategy is too soft and passive. Rarely blitzes–no pass coverage in the middle of the field. Gruden already has a pretty good gig. It’d be nice to persuade Dungy, but he seems happily retired. We need to look at aggressive Offensive Coordinators from high powered offenses, and attack style Defensive Coordinators. This team should be trying to score 50 points per game. Childress just wants to stay close, and run out the clock.

Has Childress been fired, yet?……………Go ahead and wake me up to tell me even if it happens in the middle of the night, and will celebrate almost as if the Vikings had won the Super Bowl.

  97. By HuskerVikingFan on Nov 3, 2010 | Reply

Nothing against Gruden – I don’t know the guy – but here’s a question to all those wanting Gruden to be hired as head coach:

Don’t you think your logic behind wanting Gruden here is strikingly similar to the logic of those that brought players like Hershal Walker, Jim McMahon, Warren Moon, Randal Cunningham to Minnesota. They were great at one time so the thinking goes that even if they are on the downside of their “power curve” ‘they will still produce one more time just when we need it.’

That kind of logic has resulted in zero Super Bowls since it infected the Vikings after Bud Grant retired. Furthermore, that kind of logic only belongs in the minds of those quickly destined for a Gamblers Anonymous program or the findings of an FAA Fatal Accident Report.

Sure, Gruden has achieved the ultimate NFL coaching success in the past BUT, that in no way means he can reproduce the same result again……Besides, the guy seriously needs to get a haircut befitting a mature adult male – not one sported by 10 year old Timmy from back on the block.

Promote from within. The Vikings have the best coaching talent in the NFL – with the glaring exception of Childress. Frazier is an obvious first choice. Before you counter with ‘the defense sucks this year!’ argument, that is not due to poor coaching. The subpar performance of the defense and the whole team has everything to do with Childress and whatever he did to obliterate the team chemistry they had last year and, seemingly, this years preseason. In sports, as in the airborne infantry, motivation counts for a lot.

Fire Childress now and promote from within………..And make sure Joe Webb gets the nod this Sunday [IF] Favre does not play the entire game.

  98. By HuskerVikingFan on Nov 3, 2010 | Reply

NO!!! Bo Pelini is not available to become Vikings Head Coach, nor is Carl Pelini available to become Defensive Coordinator – now or ever. They willl retire years from now, die, and be laid to rest in Nebraska.

I think everybody just needs to relax on this Sidney thing! First of all, I DIDN’T FORGET THAT SIDNEY HAS A GOOD DEAL OF THE BLAME FOR THE WAY THIS SEASON HAS WENT IF YOU GUYS REMEMBER! It is clear that many people have forgot that if he hadn’t waited to get that surgery he got ( THE ONE THAT 2 OUT OF 3 DOCTORS SAID HE NEEDED BACK IN FEB AND MARCH) WE MIGHT NOT HAVE EVEN HAD TO DEAL WITH THE MOSS THING!

The most important thing is this………………

IT’S ABOUT TWO OR THREE GAMES TOO LATE NOW! EVEN IF HE COMES BACK 100% WITH NO RUST….WHICH WILL NOT HAPPEN……IT’S TOO LATE!

We have major issues on the “D” now…..can’t stop the run, can’t get a sack to save our lives, and our secondary…..WELL, WE HAVE NONE!

This team does not have the make up to go on a 8 win out of 9 game run, for a 10-6 record, which is what they would need to may be make the playoffs in a Wild Card position!

    GET REAL EVERYBODY!

  112. By OLD SCHOOL on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

If Chilly wants to start to make good calls…..then he needs to do this…..

Start T-Jack the rest of the season to see what he can do…..

Pull A.P. when the game is out of hand so he doesn’t blow a knee trying to do to much in a losing cause………….

Keep Rice out for the rest of the season so he can be 100% for next season..

DRAFT SOME f$%^&^% secondary help for next season and beyond………

AND JUST SIT ON THE SIDE-LINE WITH HIS THUMB IN HIS MOUTH AND LET FRAZIER COACH THE REST OF THE SEASON !

  113. By fire childress on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

yeah, lets just try for a high draft pick if we lose to Arizona. then we get rid of Chilly at the same time, kill 2 birds with one stone

Listen I no everybody wants Rice back as soon as possible, but who’s to say he’s even going to be the same player as last year. This is a injury that many never ever recover from fulling as long as their in the nfl. He may very easily go back to what I said before was a average receiver until Brett made him what he is today.

In looking at the vikings making the playoffs, they need to go 10-6. I just think they dug themselves a hole they won’t get out. 9-7 won’t make it, not even as a wildcard. I sure hope a miracle is possible, but right now it looks like the wildcard teams will be coming out of the nfc east and south. I’m not sure they can make 3 games up on the pack. I’m not to worried about the bears.

  119. By 1VikingsFAN on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

OLD SCHOOL…I love the faith you have in your team :-) Heres the real deal the schedule gets a lot easier…we are only 3 games out of owning home field advantage in the NFC. Truth is, if we could win out (which is not likely but stranger things have happend – like Moss coming back) we get homefield throughout the playoffs (with a little help). We still have time to right this ship but we cannot lose to teams we should easily beat.

Your right Sutty, rice not having surgery when season was over last year when doctors told him, really hurt this teams chemistry on offense.

  124. By Brain on Nov 4, 2010 | Reply

If Rice is healthy, and ready to go, that would help the Offense immensely, and we will see an immediate improvement from the Offense.

What bothers me some what is that the Defense hasn’t played to the standard of last year. If the D can up their play just a little, I think that the Vikes will go on a run, and shock everyone!
