Vikings, Moss Reunite

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 6, 2010 – 9:59 am

For the last several years, fans have wished for it. For the last 15 hours the entire sports world has buzzed about it.

And now it’s official.

The Vikings have reached a deal with the New England Patriots to acquire WR Randy Moss, a 6-time Pro Bowler who began his career and took the NFL by storm with the Vikings in 1998.

The acquisition of Moss is a sensational move for the Vikings. But the addition is as much about substance as it is about style. Moss will be a good fit with the Vikings because of his ability to stretch defenses and haul in downfield passes from QB Brett Favre.

Inserting Moss into the lineup immediately provides Favre with a downfield target who has made a career out of burning defenses over the top. The Vikings passing offense has been slow-to-go so far in 2010, but the Vikings will look for Moss to change that quickly.

It didn’t take Moss long to make an impact when he first joined the Vikings in ‘98. A key element in the Vikings record-setting offense that season, Moss hauled in 17 TDs and 1,313 receiving yards along the way to earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Expecting an impact that dramatic in 2010 might be a bit ambitious, but the Vikings don’t need Moss to provide such gaudy numbers. The offense features superstar RB Adrian Peterson as well as pass-catchers such as TE Visanthe Shiancoe and WRs Bernard Berrian and Percy Harvin. Each of those players has a niche in head coach Brad Childress’ offense, but Moss brings that downfield element which has lacked so far this season.

Much has been made about the Vikings challenging stretch of games in October, where they will hit the road to play at the Jets this week, return home to play the Cowboys and then head back out on the road for back-to-back games against the Packers and, yes, the Patriots.

So the addition of Moss comes not a moment too early and it’s just another example of the Vikings commitment to bringing a Super Bowl victory to Minnesota.

What an awesome move by the Vikings to acquire Moss. The Favre-Moss combination is that little spice needed to get to the Super Bowl!! Go Vikings!!!

  3. By Jake on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

Obviously the Favre to Moss combo is exciting but AP should be excited by this as well because the threat of Moss deep should open up running for the best back in football. Skol Vikings!

i believe this move may mean rice’s return is in doubt i do think moss will put a sprk in the offense

Who’s out to put Moss on?

  6. By Kim L on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

Come on guys……Lets work on our OFFENSIVE LINE! What good is Moss if our line can’t protect Favre? You really think this arrogant man is going to make the offensive line any better? Talk about putting ‘your eggs in one basket’. This is supposed to be a TEAM, NOT a 2-man show!!

  7. By hank on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

kiml whatever puts doubt in the opposing defenses mind will help the team as a whole

  8. By Frank on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

This is a great move to improve a struggling passing attack! I only hope Favre can throw it far enough to take advantage of it.

Do we think Moss will bring more enthusiasm to the Vikes than he did to the Pats? Did you read that article? Did Brady really want him out?

  11. By Mark B on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

Kim L – adding Moss could indirectly help the offensive line. Consider this, with Moss stretching the field vertically, teams will roll a safety over him so he’s drawing a double team. If the Vikes send out 3 other receivers (Percy, Bernard, Shiancoe, AP etc) it will be a lot harder for teams to blitz. On passing downs the vikes should start seeing less pressure packages in exchange for better down field coverage schemes – especially if Favre and Moss can hook up early and often.

Well Chilly…Thanks for adding MOSS! Maybe all the coaching blunders in the recent weeks I complained about were premature! GOOOOO VIKINGS!!!

  16. By TWVIKE on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

Kim- Moss will have a CB on him with alot of safety help, the man stretches defenses. Add Percy,Shanc,& oh yeah, Adrian( who is averaging 130 yds a game) and defenses will have to stay a little more honest. If Bernard can get going& Sydney comes back, watch out. We should have never of let Moss go in the first place. Welcome home Randy!
P.S.- Moss will make the team better& so far it has been a one man show, The Adrian Peterson Show.

The pieces are falling into place VERY nicely. Does this move mean Rice is out indefinitely? I don’t know. I can’t wait to see both Moss and Rice stretching the field. Two sweet targets for Favre AND opening up the running game. Defensive coordinators HATE two-headed monsters. Addition of Moss is sweet, return of Rice – along with Peterson our very good Offensive line and stingy Defense – WOW. Then all we still need is that thing called LUCK sprinkled in here and there and then maybe we devote Viking fans will get that trophy thats eluded us all these years.

Hey look, Favre is still not going to be as good as last year, but, with Moss it makes Favre better and it will make AP better too…. holy crikey…. when we get Rice back it is going to be fun to watch!!

My wife just called me and told me the Vikings traded for Randy Moss. She knows I’m a HUGE fan of both the VIKES and MOSS!! I said quit teasing me like that, she said turn on ESPN! I see nothing but good coming out of this deal. Like already mentioned, it will help out AP, and give the offense a lot more options by sending Moss deep! Rice and Moss will remind me of the ole’ Carter and Moss days! Wow, the best day ever!!! GO VIKES!!!

It is great to see the Vikes taking risks here with Moss. This is a great decision to address a rough start to the season. It isn’t going to solve every issue, but at least the organization is recognizing the level of urgency we fans feel. So- quit whining about the past and focus on the near future because it just got a lot more interesting. Now, where is Chris Carter….. :)

  28. By DAG on Oct 6, 2010 | Reply

Giving Moss allot of money to start will put all the free agents in jeopardy, which includes Rice. Think about if the vikings are actually going to keep Rice? Check online and see who the free agents are; most of the top players are free agents and will most likely move on if they don’t see a good paycheck. Do research and maybe this deal will hurt us more than help, you never know, like it was said this isn’t a two man show, there’s alot of skill that not accounted for.

MNF look for Moss to stretch the Jets defense, which helps A.P. out even if Randy doesn’t do too much right away. His presence on the field changes the game. Pinch me, I’ve got to be dreaming. I’m just euphoric over this deal. I never wanted Moss to leave to begin with. Wilf said that he was all in. Wilf knows how to get things rolling.

Sure its great that Moss is back. But I just wish they would have made the trade earlier so Moss and Favre could practice more during the bye week.I think its not going to be a good game unless its like when we brought hershal walker over it pumped the team up big time. Now like previously said lets work on that “O” line and then Dallas here we come.

Not too mention dead weight salaries (I won’t name them now should be a happy time) :-) and, I don’t see a lot of issues with retaining fre agents worth retaining…..

    Truly Fantastic!!

It is hard to find the words to express just what this may mean to the entire team, the entire Viking organization and the Viking community.

I would like to think a multi-year deal may be in the works at some point – and what that may mean to the development of perhaps Viking future quarterbacks such as Webb.

Congratulations to the management that made this happen!

(In all this euphoria – we should not overlook Clowney – he got great speed, youth, and good athletic ability – grab talent when it is available.)

Good move. What do all the Childress bashers have to say now? I guess everyone who said the season was over are now back on the bandwagon. Thanks coach Childress, I hope this works out well for the Vikes. A third rounder for Moss is pretty good. He is 33 and has a big salary but I think it was a great move. When Rice comes back, look out. I hope the Vikes can still be in contention at mid season cause we will be hard to beat. If we can beat the Jets, we are in business.

I really didn’t think I would be saying this but, with this move, the situation this year is starting to look like the years past. Player acquisitions like Hershal Walker, Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, that former Bears Superbowl QB – whatever his name was, etc. etc. etc..

Why is it that for decades now, the Vikings consistently pick up formerly high calibre players after they are past their prime and expect everything to fall into place with one or two “special” player acquisitions? It has never worked for the Vikings and the odds are strongly against it ever working for them in the future.

Nothing against Moss or Favre but, this looks like nothing else but a major act of desperation by the head coach and management. I really hope this works! I’ve been waiting 41 years for the Minnesota Vikings to win a Superbowl.

    Skol Vikings!

honestly I’m not 100 % thrilled about seeing Moss in purple again… I felt like he burned our bridge before …. then again, maybe he jsut hated Mike Tice as much I did. Honestly, I think the biggest winner in this trade is going to AP. Suddenly its a real real bad idea to put 8 men in the box with a stunt with Harvin and Moss as your wide outs. AP is going to have a field day for the rest of the year.
