Peterson, Vikings Defense Key Win Over Lions

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 26, 2010 – 3:06 pm

A superior effort from both superstar RB Adrian Peterson and a stout Vikings defense keyed the Vikings to their 1st victory of the 2010 regular season, a 24-10 decision over the Detroit Lions at Mall of America Field on Sunday.

The Vikings went into the locker room at halftime with a 14-10 lead behind a 24-yard TD reception from WR Percy Harvin and a 6-yard TD run by Peterson. After beginning the season 0-2, though, that 4-point halftime lead didn’t feel too comfortable. But Peterson and the Vikings defense would take care of business in the 2nd half.

Led by LB Chad Greenway and CB Antoine Winfield, who both had a game-high 9 tackles, the Vikings defense kept Detroit off the board for the game’s final 2 quarters. Both LB Ben Leber and Winfield grabbed INTs late in the game to help keep the Lions off the board.

While the defense was at work grinding the Lions offense to a halt, Peterson put the offense on his back and ultimately sealed the Vikings victory with a sensational 80-yard TD run late in the 3rd quarter.

Peterson’s 80-yard scoring run was the longest of his career and the 4th-longest in team history. It gave the Vikings a 24-10 lead and it was the highlight of his 23-carry, 160-yard, 2-TD effort.

The win moves Minnesota to 1-2 on the season as they head into their bye week. Stay tuned to for more post-game coverage.

“All Day” Hits It Big For 2nd TD

Posted by cjsiewert on September 26, 2010 – 1:26 pm

Vikings All-Pro RB Adrian Peterson showed fans exactly why he’s the best RB in the league, providing the Purple with an 80-yard TD run down the Vikings sideline to put his team up 24-10 late in the 3rd quarter.

Peterson’s TD sprint occurred on the 1st play of the series, bouncing out to the right side and leaving the Lions secondary chasing to no prevail. The 4-year veteran is nearing 5,000 career rushing yards and will become just the 4th player in team history if he reaches that mark.

The Vikings lead the Lions 24-10 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Lions were able to tack on 3 more points by way of a 33-yard FG from K Jason Hanson as time expired in the 2nd quarter. Smith returned the INT to the Detroit 49-yard line.

Lions QB Shaun Hill and Co. drove the ball down to the Minnesota 15-yardline setting up the Hanson FG.

Through the 1st half, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson leads all rushers with 53 yards on 13 attempts and 1 TD. Favre has completed 12 of 16 passes for 106 yards, 1 TD and an INT. The Purple defense has been stout allowing just 7 first downs and 152 net yards.

Vikings Tie It Up 7-7 With Harvin TD

Posted by cjsiewert on September 26, 2010 – 11:58 am

The Lions found themselves in excellent field position following a 27-yard INT by DT Corey Williams on a short pass from Brett Favre intended for RB Toby Gerhart. The Lions started on the Vikings 12-yard line and after 3 plays the Lions finished their short drive on a 5-yard TD pass from QB Shaun Hill to TE Tony Scheffler.

The Vikings had a tough time getting their offense moving but after a muffed punt return by Lions WR Stefan Logan, the Purple turned the field position battle in their favor. Chad Greenway recovered the muffed catch and on the ensuing play Favre connected with WR Percy Harvin for a 24-yard TD.

The game is tied at 7 early in the 2nd quarter.

Griffin To Make 1st Start After Knee Injury

Posted by cjsiewert on September 26, 2010 – 11:00 am

Vikings CB Cedric Griffin will make his 1st start of the 2010 season today against the Detroit Lions since suffering a torn ACL during the NFC Championship game last January. Griffin was listed as questionable leading up to today and the Vikings coaches made the decision to start the 5-year veteran in place of Lito Sheppard.

Rookie CB Chris Cook may be joining Griffin on the field today as he made the team’s active roster. Cook has not played since injuring his knee during the 3rd preseason game.

The pair of CBs rejoining the lineup comes as a welcome sight to the Purple who are looking for their 1st win of the season over tough Lions team.
