Injuries Adding Up In NFC North

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 14, 2010 – 12:44 pm

Perhaps it’s no worse than any other division, but the injury situation in the NFC North is beginning to add up and make an impact quickly in the 2010 regular season. We are barely 1 week into things and already 3 of the 4 teams in the division have lost at least 1 starter for an extended period of time due to injury.

It began with the Vikings prior to the season, as they are missing starting WR Sidney Rice and a pair of CBs in Chris Cook and Cedric Griffin. Then this past weekend, other NFC North teams lost starters.

Jay Glazer is reporting that Green Bay Packers starting RB Ryan Grant will be placed on IR, ending his season after just 1 game. In Detroit, the Lions are unsure how long starting QB Matthew Stafford will be out with a shoulder injury, but reports indicate it could be as long as 6 weeks before he’s back under center. Fortunately for the Chicago Bears, they have not lost any starters to injury. [UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune reports that Bears starting LB Hunter Hillenmeyer is out for the season (illness).]

Although the Vikings are competing against the other 3 teams in the NFC North on a weekly basis, you hate to see players suffer injuries and you especially hate to see them miss extended periods of time because of those injuries. Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game and all teams are in the same boat in that they must be dealt with on a weekly basis.

What is the hold up with perusing Jackson from San Diego? He would be a huge target for Farve and a proven leader. I know San Diego want the farm for him but the longer he holds out the more attractive he is to join the Vikes.

What happened to Bryant McKinnie. I was away from the the TV when he was taken off the field.

  6. By Chaz on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

They are not going after Jackson because he will be suspended for 6 weeks, Sidney comes off Pup list after 6 weeks.

McKinnie suffered some type of finger injury. Not sure if it’s broken or dislocated or what. Shouldn’t keep him out long though. He did come back on to the field if I remember right.

  8. By Grammy on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

Why are we not giving Webb a try at receiver? He’s too good to having sitting on the sidelines.

  9. By matt on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

his finger was dislocated, but they were able to pop it back into place, so hes fine

  10. By MGR4FUN on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

bigmac had a dislocated finger … however they did have to cut him open to reset it … he gets stitches out on friday and he is good to go … he wanted back in the game thursday night … no need to rush either cedrick griffin or chris cook back … the purple d held the #1 scorin offense in the league to 14 points with lito and asher and hasin /williams and winfield … they represented well … should allow cook and griffin maybe even til after the bye to be completely 100% b4 their return … IMO better that than rush back to reinjure or worse … after all miami and detroit are not the aints no disrespect intened to either team

any word yet on toby gerhart’s knee and when he may be returnin’ to practice

I agree with Grammy, try Webb at wr or use him in a wild cat formation!!

  13. By rocksalt on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

try anyone at WR I am sure they would be an upgrade from BB…..

  14. By ron in CA on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

Grammy and Jim have a great idea going with Webbs abilities (and he was drafted as a receiver) what is the leagues issue with having the third stringer play, they don’t make the team because of no talent why waste the money on someone who doesn’t contribute on game day? OK injury is a possibility but isn’t that what T Jack is for…

I don’t like seeing players get hurt either. It means more when you beat a team that has fielded their best guys. Injuries are the season wild card. Was watching the Jets and Ravens game last night and watched Jenkins get his leg folded and watched Weaver of the Eagles hyper extend his knee. Part of the game- but I hate to see it.

Just as long as they do not have to give away the ranch – I would say get Vincent even if he misses the the next five games – can you imagine – Sydney, Vincent, Percy, Shianco – and then tell me how many 200 yard games Peterson might get – when teams try to define the pass!

An update on Toby Gerhart from the Pioneer Press Twitter account (@VikingsNow):

“RB Toby Gerhart said this week that his knee is fine and his move to inactive list last week was personnel-driven.”

Sounds like the knee is fine. I think his ability to pick up the blitz and protect Favre is the only thing stopping him from seeing the field.

With Players becoming faster and stronger it’s hard to believe that teams are wanting to go to an 18 games season –

If teams wanted to they can play 2 extra games ( of Flag football ) with the teams that don’t make the playoffs. AFC vs NFC – before and after these games the Fans can meet the players and etc….

  21. By eric on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

Greg Camarillo will have a HUGE Game this Sunday

  22. By WTF on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

Pat – they’re not suggesting to add any extra games, by your understanding of it. They want to remove 2 preseason games to add 2 regular season games. So essentially the biggest complaint will be that it is getting the season started before the players are ready AND forcing them to play harder for the 2 more regular season games because those 2 games actually mean something.

Your 2 games of flag football would be nothing more than making 2 preseason games that much less meaningful/useful.

these boys need to start getting more conditioning drills done in practice my god

  24. By Rogerthevikefan on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

Making the regular season 18 games is a bad idea more players will get hurt some worst than other. 16 games works and should not be tampered with. This week alone there was 4 concussions. 16 games should be the limit otherwise the playoff teams wont be able to field any star players.

this team should not be in a position where people are pushing a quarterback to play wide receiver with no nfl wide receiving experience.

    explain your position please

I think it’s a shame that so many good players have been added to other teams.
I don’t feel very confident this year, hope I’m wrong!
Was at the NO game and it was like our team wasn’t communicating very well.
    Brett seemed upset about something???

I’m the biggest Vikings fan around but I’m pessimistic about this season. Maybe it’s the nature of our team’s culture but I’m just not feeling good early on. Therefore, I made a list as to why I think we’ll miss the playoffs…

Eight Reasons we’ll only win eight games this year:

    1. Our only good receiver is out until November
    2. Old Man Favre is out of shape and rusty
    3. Chilly is a top 5 worst coach in the NFL
    4. Our O-line is over the hill and it shows
    5. AP doesn’t get the ball 30 times a game
    6. Our secondary STINKS
    7. Our division looks very tough…Bears, Lions, and (GASP!) GB all look improved
    8. The fairweather group of fans that comprise 50% of our fanbase will be bailing out on the team come Thanksgiving. NO BLACKOUTS PLEASE!!!

I hope I’m wrong but I think our home opener in 2011 will be across the street from the Staples Center.

eight and eight you are an idiot! I have 8 reasons the vikings are winning the super bowl!!!!

1 – Greg Camarillo is awesome, just need to get him some time
2 – Favre will be in game shape by week 3, same as last year
3 – chilly isn’t a bad coach, he just makes bad decisions sometimes
4 – our o-line didn’t give up a sack and peterson ran wild vs NO.
    5 – peterson doesn’t need 30 rushes a game, that a recipe for injury!
6 – our “stinky secondary” held NO to 14 points. How is that bad?
7 – bears and lions looked completely inept. packer lost rb grant so their super bowl hopes are probably done
8 – vikings are not moving, this rumor swirls all the time. just a rumor!

you say our fanbase is 50% bandwagon jumpers? looks to me like you’re the first one off! don’t bother getting back on when we’re 15-1 and heading to dallas for a super bowl!!!!!!!!!!

i love the people that post on this site, it’s pure comedy :)

vikings win 9 or 10 this year. we’ll make a 2nd half run when my boy Sidney comes back!

There will be a decision tomorrow on V. Jackson as far as his eligibility to be able to play on week 4. Keep your fingers crossed because the Vikings will be all over this if that is the case.

going into this season i felt that the vikings were very close to be a sb winner . this teams future is now and we should have loaded up with 4-5 established players. it seems to me we have added players that may have an upside in 2-3 years but this team is peaking right now and many of the veterans will be gone or less effective in 2-3 years. this was the time for the vikings to go all out for the sb and add veteran players that may not make sense most of the time but i believe at this stage based on where the vikings are it does. webb is a player for the future and we should have better options to try at wide receiver than him.

  36. By nbartsh on Sep 15, 2010 | Reply

Is Cook going to be able to play on sunday? The vikings will be fine if they decide to run the ball in the second half. Seven carries for AP in the second half isn’t going to cut it. He was a man on a mission last week, and did not get the opportunity last week in the 2nd half against a tired defense to shine. the vikings should not forget what their identity as a team.

  37. By Mike Peterson on Sep 15, 2010 | Reply

Who needs Moss when you can have Rice!! V. Jackson is also not needed. Why sell the farm . Harvin, Camarillo and Shiacone are very talented. Rice returning in Nov. will provide the Vikings the best four receivers in the NFL. We have a tough schedule but i see this team coming together this week and will not look back!

I think we should be thinking about a way to get Michael Vick for next year

Eight reasons Favre 4 Ever is an idiot

eight and eight you are an idiot! I have 8 reasons the vikings are winning the super bowl!!!!

1 – Greg Camarillo is awesome, just need to get him some time
THERE IS A REASON THAT MIAMI WAS WILLING TO LET HIM GO..HE MAY LOOK LIKE WES WELKER BUT HE ISN’T WES WELKER
2 – Favre will be in game shape by week 3, same as last year
WAITING FOR FAVRE TO GET INTO GAME SHAPE IS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER- EVERY GAME IN THE NFL IS IMPORTANT
3 – chilly isn’t a bad coach, he just makes bad decisions sometimes
THERE ARE FEW KEY DECISIONS IN EVERY GAME, CHILLY SEEMS TO MAKE THE WRONG ONE QUITE OFTEN, THAT’S WHAT MAKES HIM A BAD COACH
4 – our o-line didn’t give up a sack and peterson ran wild vs NO.
87 YARDS FOR PETERSON IS NOT RUNNING WILD AND THE O-LINE GAVE UP 1 SACK AND SOME PRESSURES (VILMA’S INT)
    5 – peterson doesn’t need 30 rushes a game, that a recipe for injury!
PETERSON NEEDS THE TOUCHES…HE IS ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE GAME
6 – our “stinky secondary” held NO to 14 points. How is that bad?
ONE DROPPED TD PASS FROM BREES AND A FAILURE TO STOP THEM ON 3RD DOWN WHEN YOU NEEDED TO.
7 – bears and lions looked completely inept. packer lost rb grant so their super bowl hopes are probably done
THE PACKERS OFFENSE DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND RYAN GRANT, BUT ALTHOUGH A BIG LOSS, THEY STILL HAVE JACKSON. LIONS AND BEARS DO SUCK.
8 – vikings are not moving, this rumor swirls all the time. just a rumor!
CAN YOU SAY: LOS ANGELES VIKINGS

you say our fanbase is 50% bandwagon jumpers? looks to me like you’re the first one off! don’t bother getting back on when we’re 15-1 and heading to dallas for a super bowl!!!!!!!!!!

15 AND 1: LAST TIME THE VIKINGS HAD THAT RECORD GARY ANDERSON MISSED A KICK WIDE RIGHT (ATLANTA 30 MINN 27 (OT))

    Three reasons Dolfin2 is pathetic:

Logo a dolphin with an undersized helmet crammed
over its blow hole-jumping threw a FLAMMING
    hoop!
Relevancy Dolphins have’nt had any in 20-30 years
