Vikings To Look At WRs

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 13, 2010 – 1:27 pm

One of the notable characteristics of the Vikings season-opening 53-man roster is that the team kept just 4 WRs. I say “just 4 WRs” because last season’s opening-day roster included 6 WRs and WR was considered one of the team’s deeper positions entering training camp.

But perhaps the Vikings are considering adding someone to the depth chart. The Star Tribune’s Judd Zulgad reported on Sunday that the Vikings are planning to work out 4 WRs this week at Winter Park. Zulgad identified the 4 as Sam Aiken, Reggie Brown, Ruvell Martin and Demetrius Williams.

Although Childress didn’t confirm – nor was he asked – the identity of the 4 WRs being brought in, the Vikings head coach did say bringing in street free agents to take a look at them is more a matter of routine than a search process.

“It’s a thing that we do every week,” Childress explained. “We usually bring people in to try to get a look at them. We’ve had numbers of people through here to look at, whether it’s the offensive line [or] whether it’s in the secondary.”

Childress indicated the players would arrive in Minnesota Monday night for a workout on Tuesday. Childress has some familiarity with Brown from their days together in Philadelphia. Vikings fans may remember Martin’s name because he is a former Green Bay Packer. Aiken is a former Patriot and Williams is a former Raven.

Whether or not any of them are future Vikings remains to be seen. For right now, Childress and the Vikings will begin the process of familiarizing themselves with the free agent WR and potentially with players at other positions as well.

“What it does is it gives us a mind’s eye picture of what those guys look like should we require somebody down the road,” Childress said. “Not just wide receivers, I might add. That’s not the only the people that are coming in here.”

I heard that Vincent Jackson of the Chargers was in the mix. True?

We need somebody. I still like Javon Walker the best of the 5 if V Jax isnt in the mix. At least Walker has a few weeks of familiarity with the squad and looked good in the preseason.

If Brett had any one he could throw to on Thursday night, they could have wiped the butt’s of those Saints….The Saints did not play well and we could have easily won that game…Where was Javon Walker? Why not put him out there….Come on, Let’s get going with this….It’s already late….Randy Moss sounds a little discontented with his place right now and I know Brett likes him…..Susan

Childress needs to swallow his ego and do everything possiable to acquire Vincent Jackson, this includes trading Tarvis Jackson and giving up the draft picks, that costs us a true backup QB, and a true back up RB and an excellent punt returner..Childress needs to admit that the Tarvis Jackson project has failed. The Saints may have won the game, however we won a moral victory; holding the superbowl champions to 14 points, in one of the most difficult stadiums in the leage. The fact that were were in position to win the game late in the 4th quarter is a moral victory. The fact thatwe were without several key starters and still made this a competitive game is a moral victory. Protecting Farve, moral victory, Adrian not fumbling, moral victory..Berian also can be traded he doesnt evan look intrested!!!

These days you need a receiver with good height. At least 6’2″, the taller the better as long as he has good hands.

I agree that we need receivers that can catch as well as get open. Brett will get the ball to the mark. What happen to J. Walker. He would of been a good fit for the team since him and Brett played together. That means that expectations are high. We would be an good deep route receivers. Also looking at what we have, How come we do not have plays that consist of 2 TE or maybe 3. There was a play on Thursday where Dugan and Kleins was in and the Saints defense collapse but we got the first down since they started the blitz but then the LB held back. So more plays consisting of 2 or 3 TE in the game is my 2 cents.

In reality, I agree with one of the previous comments made up above. We need someone who can simply catch the ball and run the routes the he’s supposed to. BB has been a big disappointment, because with Brets arrival, his game should have elevated just as Sidney Rice’s game did. Instead, he has been left sadly behind and often times he looks as if he doesn’t belong on the field. I have a serious problem with people has ask for top level money, but do not perform according to the money that they have asked for. Can anyone say J. Russell?
I am a die-hard fan, and I want to see him succeed, but self examination is order on his part , because its now or never on his part. If he was truly performing up to par, then we wouldn’t be looking for more offensive help, but merely for a back up just in case, but the reality is, were looking for someone

  25. By Tumavotinh on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

Man, Brad Childress is something else. He said Greg camarillo needs to get comfortable with the offense before he can get more playing time. He been here over a week and done more than BB thats been here for years. Greg can catch the ball and can run routes. He has Football IQ like when the play breaks down he knows how to get open. BB cant even get separation on a slant. If Vikes cant get Randy Moss then get Javon Walker back and start him over BB. Line up should be Javon Walker, Greg Camarillo, Percy Harvin.

  26. By Pam on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

It is the same old story. Childress doesn’t know how to coach. No imagination. At least Walker and Favre had chemistry. We don’t need someone who isn’t of use to us immediately. Definitely blame coaching for the loss on Thursday.

  27. By Skol_Vikings on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

Randy Moss will never come back to Minnesota, and it should stay that way.

I think with Jarmillo its more a matter of not knowing the offense yet.

Jimmy Kleinsaucer made that catch. The ball hit his hand, not the ground.

Why didn’t we see more Petersen or Shancoe in the second half?

Payne is solid move him from practice squad. He is 6’2 and has good hands. We probly could trade bb to the rams for a high 2nd or 3rd draft pick which could then be used to get 6’5 V. Jackson. We should have Camarillio Harvin Payne for the current roster. Dream wr core Jackson or Moss Camarillo Harvin and Payne

Bernard Berrian is a bust. I don’t care what the salary implications are, he must go.

Instead they add the duty of punt returns? You have to be fearless to do that job. Berrian is far from that. I see him calling fair catch 75% percent of the time and I am not sure he will even be able to actually catch more than 75% of the fair catches.

Just one or 2 more plays last week and we win!

If Camarillo had played the whole game, we get that win!

  33. By CHUCKAPPINGTON on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

we lost because favre didnt bother to make training camp and was off on his timing…not the recievers fault. Vikes allowed Favre to blow their chance at hammering out home field advantage possibly with a win. AP played well but didnt get much press…

Get randy moss if we can this year or next letting him go was the biggest mistake, but he has changed and matured so much that he knows exactly what he must do on sundays, if we cant get randy or vincent jackson we should bring back Javon walker a veteran who can not only catch but create plays

Still think Martin has the best shot of the four. Forget Jackson or Moss, the price is too high for the return. The Pat’s would demand a # 1 pick and Randy would demand Berrian money. Berrian can still play football, but he is a sprinter, not a physical inside guy and we keep cutting off his patterns and bringing him across the middle. That isn’t his game. Let Harvin play the slot because he is great there and let Camarillo play possession on the other side.

i cant stand childress…..you can tell he lterrble coach…everything is always “fluid” give me a break…..this year is do or die for us GET VINCENT JACKSON…berrian SUCKS…troy williamson jr is the perfect name for him he can catch anything…camarillo is a beast get him the ball…AP is our offense hes always 1 broken tackle away from a TD..oh yeah and Jacksons suspension is only 3 games but theyre tryin to tack on 3 more cuz of a roster exemption I think if he only has to serve the 3 games we will get him well I hope so anyway. There is no way this coaching staff can be happy with the receivers we have right now every Vikings fan can see it so the coaches have to…PLEASE VIKINGS ive been a loyal fan my WHOLE life (28 years) its about time us fans get a championship we definitely have the team to do it we held the AINTS to 14 pts with a banged up secondary….if we can do that and get a receiver that can make some plays the sky is the limit……GGOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Wobschall – Berrian was one of your 5 guys that was going to give us that extra edge this year. We really could have used him in the Saints game! What happened to him? Is he hurt? Are you still behind this guy? What is the excuse now for the lack of production between Favre and Berrian?

I really think we need to see more from Percy Harvin. he needs to be working in the slot, in motion, and in the backfield. Although he didn’t have much impact on the season opener, he is a game changing player for sure and i would like to see him have a season better than his rookie of the year season … i know he’s capable of it!!! Favre needs to use him more this year, especially without Rice right now.

I have a question for London, why is King Viking an idiot for stating the obvious? And how is it T-Jax fault over the lost to the Saints? Stop looking at the preseason as a guide for who’s better between Jackson and Rosenfelds! Besides the Saints were rolling a lot of coverage to Barrian’s side as well as to Percy’s side. The Vikings need another outside WR so Percy and Greg can play their natural position which is the slot. Grow up London! You’re the one acting like a spoiled child…

    T-Jak + Berrian for V-Jak. Straight up.

I think Childress is doing a good job but some of his decisions escape me. Time to swallow your pride and pony up the cash.

Plausible WR layout: Vincent Jackson, Harvin, Walker, with Camarillo being in on 4 WR packages and also interchangable whenever with Harvin.

Week 7 WR: V-Jak, Rice, Harvin, with Walker in on 4 WR packages and Camarillo still interchangable.

This list isn’t trying to short change Camarillo at all. I really like him, high football IQ and will catch darn near anything you throw at him.
This would keep our receiving core well rested being able to change anyone whenever you wanted and I don’t even think Revis Island is half this big.

If there was enough attention given and noise from us fans about how much we want Randy Moss back to retire in purple, this would not be impossible for us to do.
    1. Randy wants more money and loves being loved.
    2. In New england he is another Patroit. Back in the dome he is one of our superstars!
    3. He is a future hall of famer and should start being treated like it now. We have to openly get the message to him about how much we want and need him.
We could get him for a #2 and Lloyd off of the pratcice squad. We got Favre. Twice. We could get Moss if we really tried. It would be awsome.

Thank you chuchappington. You are the first person to lay some blame at Lord Farve. The receivers didn’t play particularly bad, and they were getting open. Farve had no chemistry with them, because he didn’t bother coming to camp on time. We don’t need Javon Walker. He is totally washed up. What has he done the last three years? I don’t mind Vincent Jackson, but would he be a cancer in the locker room? The running game was going in the first half, and we went away from it. Why??

Will you people get off Berrian’s butt. Two years ago with Frerotte & T-Jack he had the highest yards per catch in the league @ OVER 20 YARDS A RECEPTION. Last year despite a year long hamstring injuy, which he played through, he had over 50 receptions, ending with the championship game at N.O. where he had 9 rec. for 122 yards !!!!! He’s NOT a # one rec. he’s a two or three. It’s not his fault FAVRE didn’t show up for camp, or that they only threw to him a couple times the other night, so he dropped one pass just as he got hit, not to mention the pas was “smoking”, and a split second off in timing. AND WILL YOU PEOPLE GET REAL, WE ARE NOT TRADING FOR MOSS, NOR ARE THEY TRADING HIM.!!!!! ALSO, we need all the “picks” we can get for a Q.B. in the draft or….. Have you all lost your mind and/or memory ? We have “only” J.Webb under contract next year !!!! I really am astounded by most of what I read onthis site, I can’t figure out if you are drunk, or just PLAIN STUPID, I lean towards the latter !!!!!

celtic -the problem is we are paying berrian to be a #1. And it is his fault when he drops pass that hit him in the chest. Favre has no confidence in him, and even idiots like us can see that. Wake up man.

I became a Viking fan back in the days of Fran T., betting my allowance against my old man(the nasty Bears fan) every Sunday. I’ve also been a Chef for 23yrs now. On that note here’s my recipe for the road to Dallas: T-jack might as well change his name to T-joke and go be some other teams embarrassment, Berian couldn’t catch a ball to save his life here in Chicago(P.S. Chilly- tha’ts why the Bears cut him loose,Wade too). He really needs to get a piggy back ride from T-jack out of Minn(just in case his hammy starts hurting again)! Webb needs to not only be the #2, but also needs to see playing time immediately! I’d rather see Webb at 2 and my grandmother at 3 than TJ to even be on the roster! Can anyone say wildcat? AP & Webb in back with VS and Percy in the slots, Moss out to the right? Maybe its just a dream but heck we have the pieces, even without Moss put Camarillo to the right. And is it just me or did our O line trail off end of last season? Why we need extra guys to protect Farve is a waste of play maker spots in the line up. Lets revisit the O line and what they are actually accomplishing!!! Not much thus far this year. Lastly-Chilly needs to not play call anymore! Drop him and lets promote Lez Fraiser, he’s ready to be Head Coach! I hope I go deaf from hearing the HORN so much this year! Dallas or bust!

Vikings need to use Camarillo way more. He did awesome in the preseason games and also the one catch he had in the fourth quarter of the Saints game. Why put him in only in the fourth quarter? He may not be a deep threat but he is a very reliable catcher. Bring back Javon Walker as well. Skol Vikings!

This was only one game. I’m sure the coaching staff will figure out the mix thats needed. Brett said his timing was off. We all know this team has alot of talent and i’m sure we as all Viking fans will be pleasantly pleased at the end on this season.

What’s with all the talk of getting Moss? You guys high he isn’t leaving the Pats this season, what Moss is doing is shooting himself in the foot for a new deal with the Pats next season. Cam is your guy imo but he needs time to learn playbook and get comfortable with Brett. And trade BB for a 2nd or 3rd round draft pic?? What team in there right mind would want him he looked useless in all aspects of the game. Rice is hard to replace and that’s not your coach’s fault. You hung in the game against the champs nothing wrong with that. If Cam doesn’t step up though going to be a long season because no one will respect your passing game fill the box and blitz blitz blitz!!

Satples of the wide receiver are route running and the ability to catch the ball. THat said, although the chargers lost their opener to KC. I love their group of receivers. All of them are tall, have speed (to stretch the field), and can go after the ball. Even without Vicent Jackson, they have a tremendous corp.

I wish the Vikings had taller and faster receivers; we have to have the weakest receiving group in the NFL. Brett and AP need help. Childress continues to show he is an idiot thinking we can wait for Rice. The only group equal to or slightly worse than our group in the NFC North is the Bears.

Is Ziggi is REALLY gunning for the Super Bowl, we need help now. Use those picks from the Giants to spice up the pot for Vicent Jackson.

Outside of some real threats, we will be watching and not playing in the playoffs…how does 9 and 7 sound?

I read nothing more then everyone telling the world that they are a huge fan of a team they do nothing but talk down of, saying we need this or go get this person. Try just standing behind the team you have. How well would you play when every fan you meet or blog you read knocks you down? Its hard to shake it off no matter how much you get paid. So maybe the ones who say cut, replace and trade half the team are the ones really costing us the game! Just a thought.

Just show the guys that even know you might not think the coach is making the right moves and regardless you will be a fan win or loose because thats what a fan is! So get of the band wagon most are on and be a true fan and stand behind THE TEAM we have and not your fantasy football team.

Vikes should look at Freddie Barnes. He can run routes and catch. He holds the NCAA season record for receptions. Bears cut him because he was “too slow”, but every time I saw him on special teams in preseason he was the first one down the field. Anyway, there’s a lot more to a good receiver than speed. Troy Williamson comes to mind.
