Childress Saw “Some Good Things” From Vikings Secondary Vs. Saints

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 13, 2010 – 1:50 pm

The Vikings entered their season-opener against the New Orleans Saints with just 3 healthy CBs and a new starter at S in Husain Abdullah. Considering the Saints boasted last year’s #1 scoring offense and #4 passing offense and were also returning most of their starters, the Vikings secondary had a tall task at hand.

But Leslie Frazier’s defense rose to the challenge, holding Drew Brees and Co. under their average passing yards per game from a season ago and giving up just 14 points. The Vikings secondary was beaten for a long TD on the game’s 1st series and there were lapses in other junctures of the game, but by and large the Vikings secondary held their own.

A few days removed from the game, Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress explained that he saw some positives from the secondary.

“I thought those guy did some good things, all the way around, whether it was Lito (Sheppard)playing at the right corner, Asher Allen swinging back and forth,” Childress said. “I thought they did some good things, particularly in terms of tackling. I saw Asher show up and be able to stick a knife in some things and Lito had a couple nice tackles as well. Antoine is Antoine.”

Both Winfield and Husain Abdullah had nice open field tackles against some of the Saints best playmakers, and Sheppard forced a key incompletion on a 3rd down pass to force a punt.

One of the reasons the Vikings had just 3 healthy CBs entering Week 1 is because 2nd round rookie CB Chris Cook injured his knee during the 4th preseason game. He’s expected to miss multiple weeks but he was able to return to the practice field on Monday with his teammates.

Childress indicated the rookie CB isn’t 100%, but it’s a good sign nonetheless that Cook is working his way back into the mix.

“He just went through some individual periods,” Childress said. “He doesn’t look completely comfortable. As always, it’ll be how he comes back in and treats and how he shows back up tomorrow. But he did some football specific stuff today out on the grass during individual (period).”

Yeah…….what was that! What did you see that was good Brad…..What did you see that would lead you to believe that who we have back there are going to be able to stop Greenbay’s passing attack……the Pats passing attack……the Cowboys……..! I’m really wanting to know what you saw back there that would lead you to believe that what’s back there will lead this team to the Super Bowl…..or even deep into the playoffs…….What? IDIOT!

brad saw DREW BREZZ throw only 200 + passing yards and one touchdown pass. we have cris cook hurt and cendric giffen and we still show up to play hard against the best explosive offence. we need to get peterson going 26 -32 carries a game it will make the passing game alot better we need to play hardder

Old school. That was WAY out of line. Bottom line, The Saints + 14 points = victory for the defense. Our offense was the thing to worry about, but they will be fine too because they are proven. Lito played WAY better then people made it sound like he would, and I thought they played better against the Saints then %90 of secondarys will this year. I felt the same way as Chilly.

Childrees saw some “good things” your brilliant childress, we also saw some good things from our team, what we did not see are some good things from you. Get it Ziggy!!!

POSITIVE THOUGHTS PEOPLE! The vikings played very well on defense. We will be fine, its only one game. and it was against the super bowl champions. We will win our division! and we will go to the super bowl. BE POSITIVE! We have alot better team then we are getting credit for. remember THINK POSITIVE.

Our defense did a good job against the great Saints offense. The tackling was solid on both defense and special teams. With a healthy Giffen and Cook… the D will only get better. On the offensive side, I was happy with what I saw from AP and the O-line. The pitching and catching needs to get better (I think It will). I know it is hard to replace a guy like Sidney… but we need to use AP more on 1st and second down on short throws out of the back field. Get AP in space! Shift him to slot and throw a little bubble screen to him every once in awhile.

Basic defense they don’t blitz much, vikings are playing preseason vanilla defense. Throw in some different looks for goodness sakes all they do is drop back and play zone on most of the plays. They need to disguise and get new packages frazier is being too simple.

Ha Childress, we did see some good things from our defensive back field, however we did not see some good things from you…..Ziggy get a clue you have the worst coach in the NFL..If you do not do something about your head coach, than I can make a logical argument that you want to move our beloved vikings to another city..Vikings fans please be advised Ziggy wants a new stadium and maybe hes looking for a major lose for the vikings in order to justify moving the vikings…Fire Childress and make Frazier the head coach, Childress should have been fired after last years destructive coaching which costs us a superbowl….

We have a great team but an awful coach! Childress su*ks… We are going to continue to have problems because of Childress. The Vikings have one of the most talented teams in the NFL if not the most talented. I have been saying this since Childress took over, we cannot get where we need to get because of him. He is not a good coach. I just hope Brett can step up and lead this team. We need a leader and it is painfully obvious that Childress will never be the leader of this team. We have what it takes to get to the Superbowl, however if we fail to get there. It will be because of Childress and his idiot ways of coaching.. Stay strong Vikes and lets “Get er done”!!!!!

Some good things……..well it was good the Saints flubbed 2 field goals and dropped a sure TD pass….it was good the vikes only lost by 1 score……what gthe h##$ is good about losing????

  16. By rocksalt on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

Also, was it good that we really gave up on running thev ball in 2nd half????

  17. By Brees, ur dead on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

hey Old school GROW UP and stop blaming CHILE what he saw good was the defense hold the most potent scoring offense a season ago to 14 points if our offense played good we could have won 24-14 and you wouldnt be doing what your doing right now which is blaming the coach…Im sick of hearing it…
If you actually watched the game you saw lito and others make great plays to stop the saints…

  18. By CarterMossReed on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

I don’t know what secondary chilly was talking about but I saw brees toying our defense most of the time. Chilly always has low standards he thinks everything is always good when its not. He sets his bar low with how our schedule is there good luck with basic zone coverage.

  19. By moorevikes on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

i saw drew brees light it up on the first series and score. then i saw him move the chains comfortably. thank god their kicker partied too hard the night before. then in the second half i saw them run the ball over are wall. i might be wrong but if their running the ball brees isn’t throwing; right? could that be why he only had 200 yrds? everyone keeps talking about 14 pts this 14 pts that. could have easily been 27-9. long story short we have the most conservative team in the league. someone said it best, it would be one thing if the team just sucked but we have far too many great players. so hows fault is it?

  20. By Dolphin2 on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

You Viking fans are morons…the Saints controlled the clock when your team needed to stop them. Dolphins go into the humpty dome and win. 24 to 17.

  21. By London on Sep 13, 2010 | Reply

ha rock head, what if brett did not throw an interception? What if Asher Allen hung on to a sure interception? Rock head, you have never played football, never touched a trophy, our vikings have a lot to be proud of, a lot of things to build from, Believe me Brett and the Vikings will make the right adjustments and you will be proves a fool as you are

Hey Dolphin2. That game was in New Orleans remember? We lost to them in their home, so you think your fish are going to beat the Vikings in the Metrodome? You’re smoking something.

  24. By Rogerthevikefan on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

Dolphin fans did you guys only score 15 against one of the worst teams in the league. Your big man Marshall did not score fact is he only had 56 yards. So act all big and every thing but in the end we will be having fish for lunch.

I love the blind love I see……..I would love for every single one of you that have your head up your a@#$% come back on the blog …..Ohhhhhh..let’s say about Oct. 24…after we have played 6 or 7 games and after that nights game vs the Pack and continue to tell me how good or even great the secondary is! PLEASE COME BACK! I watched the game, I saw Brees throw where ever he wanted and then shut it down in the second half to kill the clock and then they ran it at will…… f#$%^&* IDIOTS! Don’t want to hear about the coach because you are sick of it………OK…I guess it was good that we stopped running the ball in the second half because we couldn’t in the first half and the passing game for us was AWESOME!

Chilly is not playing, the players are. if the O-line is good passing will be excellent. Saints were drunk on Superbowl party and that will fade quickly my friends. Vikings will better than 14 wins this year. Go vikes all the way to Dallas

Chillyls explanation for not using AP more in the second half just doesn’t make sense. We were only down less than a touchdown!! He’s putting too much pressure on Brett when he doesn’t have to. Isn’t that why we have AP? Chilly, you lost the game on the sideline. Either it is time to admit mistakes, like Jackson and BB and move on; or it’s time for you to move on!!!!!

  30. By Skol_Vikings on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

The weakness on the defense on Thursday wasn’t the secondary, it was the front four not stopping the run and getting little pressure on the QB. If you disrupt 5 more plays a quarter with the front 4, the game takes care of itself.

  31. By taxdawg on Sep 14, 2010 | Reply

dont be talkin smack on the front four … almost every team in the nfl had to pick up new blockers in the draft because of our front 4 last year

  40. By vikefan in colt territory on Sep 15, 2010 | Reply

the only reason the saints score only 14 is they abandoned the pass attack when they found out it was like shooting fish in a barrel, had the vikes gone up a score you would have seen a repeat of their first drive down to score a TD to get the lead back and chilly would have said it still looked ok, we still need help in secondary area.
