Vikings Go To Half Leading 9-7

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 9, 2010 – 8:02 pm

A blocked FG at the end of the half was a downer, but the good news is the Vikings survived a serious blitz by the Saints offense (and defense) in the 1st quarter to take a 9-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

New Orleans came out and scored in 5 plays on the 1st drive of the game to go up 7-0. The Vikings couldn’t respond and the 1st quarter finished with the Vikings garnering just 1 first down and the Saints claiming 6.

But Brett Favre put together 2 key drives to put a FG and TD on the board, the TD coming on a quick drive at the end of the quarter to take the lead. A blocked PAT prevented the Vikings from taking a 3-point lead, but a lead is a lead nonetheless when you’re in the Superdome.

Ryan Longwell nailed a 41-yard FG earlier in the quarter and became the Vikings 7th all-time leading scorer, surpassing RB Chuck Foreman.

All in all, the Vikings lead 9-7 at half after struggling in the 1st quarter. And they will receive to begin the 2nd half.

sorry but a team just cannot win the big game with childress the coach…his conservative strategy makes sure you dont win the big games…our kickoff is allways short while other teams kick deep…also it is about time berrian woke up

this team has much more talent than childress allows them to be shown…his personal decisions and game strategy is terrible….he pl;ays to hang on in games…if we had the greates offensive players in the game he would play the same way…

I don’t know why the VIkes even travel down to N O to play the Saints. Might just as well call up the REFS and forefeit.

Fücking bûllshît, just shows why you can’t skip camp Brett. I can’t believe we couldn’t put together a single drive in the second half.

The team will get better, but we’ll be hearing about this one for a while.

Hey, lets hear it, Vikes fans! As of right now, we have the inside track to the first pick in next years draft!!!! lol BTW, don’t get too down on Allen, Cedric Griffen isn’t exactly Derrell Revis.

The best coached team won tonight, period. As long as we run this Tampa 2 defense with subpar DBs, we are never gonna make it to the big game, much less win it. If the front 4 can’t get pressure, game over.

Well as we have been saying all week long, it would be a good game….. But, again you were out Coached, And will continue to be through out the year. Sorry to ruin you next 10 days. TicK Tock , Tick Tock is how we planned it. Too bad your players had to loose in a non cheap shot game as we have been hearing all year from the MIDDLE NORTH.

We held the Saints to 2 scores and couldn’t beat them, are you kidding me? The play calling and personnel choices were hiddeous! Better start getting things together Chilly or we’ll all be calling for your head on a pike.

  20. By PurplePeopleEater on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

Woodboat – it was the Tampa 2 defense that kept us IN that game! That braindead WestCoast offense is what wasn’t working tonight. It’s too old of a system and everyone knows how to defend against it. That’s why you need a veteran QB to run it, cause he’s the only one that’s going to find any openings in a defense. But he needs to know his receivers to have a chance at making it work, and he didn’t know any of them tonight.

  21. By D on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

What happened to the run game in the 2nd 1/2? I think we panicked and tried to throw with enough time to mix it up.

  22. By whodat2 on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

We told you all week who would win tonight…I’ll post my winning comments here since Mike can’t blog the entire game. Viking fans, lets start hearing about how the refs won this game for the Saints, how our cornerback is terrible and how Favre should have been in camp and how great Webb is and how Camarillo is the next Wes Welker. Go back home you losers. You said we were dumb for building below sea level, but who’s the one paying to rebuild it. You are–hahahahahaha.
    Go Saints!

Dont get your head down Brett. They showed everyone right off the bat that the officials were not going to let the Saints lose that game. That was one of the saddest games ive ever seen.

  32. By tp28 on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

punting with approx 5:30 to play when we cannot stop a drive in the 2nd half? i turned it off right then. chilly needs to catch up with how this game is coached in 2010. that is four down territory for any succesful team in today’s nfl. draw play on 3 & 11 might have moved the chains and it certainly would have made 4th down manageable. he should be embarrassed. risk equals reward.

only 19 carries for AD? give that beast at least 25; he was so close to breaking one. he has earned his touches so why don’t we give them to him?

gotta be pleased with how the D played shorthanded. we started to give up chunks on the ground in the 2nd half but we held the league’s most potent offense to 14 points.

that may end up being the one win that keeps us out of the post-season. sad but true.

  33. By PurplePeopleEater on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

Arm-chair coaches would have won that game for the Vikes, unfortunately Childress only has a beanbag in his living room.

  34. By vikingsfaninnebraska on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

Farve looked old tonight. Receivers looked to be in a disarray . AD is going ot get wore down if the Vikes try to run him like they did tonight. D-backs stepped up and held the high powered offense, but it could be a long season if we can’t score more than 9 points.

  35. By Ramjet on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

Chilly thinks he is the smartes guy in the NFL, our only sucess with him as HC came last year when I am sure Brett called the plays he wanted. I counted game after game when we ran right a majority of times, why not run behind your probowl o-line men, oh yeah chilly’s to smart for that, hey we need 2 yards for a good field goal chance in the NFC championship but chilly has to try to confuse the defense with personel and what do you know 12 men in the huddle. I know pop warner coaches who would line up their jumbo and run the baddest back in the league. 4 years ago for a monday night game against the Pats and genius decides to have a shootout with Brad Johnson vs Tom Brady. PLEASE Zigi I hope you move Frazier up before he leaves, Chilly is the WORST coach in the NFL

Childress has to be fired .Give the Saints the ball back with 5 minutes left. What an idiot!!! No fan would have had a problem going for forth and eleven from their 45 yard line. Punting in that situation just told them we give up.

  37. By madmike on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

Way to go Vikes. I guess we all know that Farve is calling the shots and he will never allow the team to win on the legs of AD. The bestthing for us this year would be for farve to get hurt and not be able to play, the shrink to leave town, and the owner to have a heart attach and sell the team to somebody who likes the Vikes!!!!

I think we looked good tonight. Do I think we need new coach H*LL yes I do! I have been saying for years as well as a lot of other people that we need a new coach. The fact is, we have Childress and we are going to have to deal with it for now. I think we should have captialized on some things, but we didn’t. I think Brett didn’t look in sequence tonight, however he will come around. The Saints are the best team in the NFL right now and they barely won. I think as the season goes on we will be a force to reckoned with. Keep your chins up Vikings, you played well tonight. I think it is going to be one H*ll of a season…. I can’t understand why we didn’t have Camarillo out there far more often! On a positive note, Adrian looks like he has much better ball control. That is key as we go forward. Some people here knocking the D after this game, I thought they did good considering they were facing a great offense without some of our key players. The score could have been much worse. I thought our playcalling on the offensive side was very predictable which made it easy for the Saints to shut us down. We need to come up with some new plays or something cause this will continue to be a problem if we don’t. Hold your chins up Vikes, we have a long way to go, but we can and will improve next game! GO VIKES!

WE NEED SOME WR’s and FAST!!! Berriam,Harvin were really off their marks tonight. Camillo and Shancoe were the only ones that could actually catch the ball and run their routes. Can’t believe that Childress didnt pick up T.J and let Reynaud and Walker go.Cant figure out what is in his head? We need help with the receiving corp coach and if you dont address this situation we will not have very many wins this year(if any). . We can ill-afford waiting until Rice is back. We need to do something to correct this situation NOW….

OK the Vikes gave it their all tonight, they’re out of sync, but let’s let’s get real and talk about player personnel, DO we need Camarillo, Dugan, and aboutn a half a dozen other players, yet we get rid of Darius Reynaud, Benny Sapp, Ian Johnson and let T J Housmanzadah slip away, Gee could we have used them tonight? Now why aren’t we using Kleinsausen as a blocking fullback? Who is doing the incredible job of taking an incredible Viking team down to a mediocre team?

Why didn’t Camarillo play the whole game? Shiancoe was the only receiver who made great catches. What was wrong with Percy? He couldn’t catch the ball. I felt bad for Brett. He through the ball and the Saints were the ones going out of their way trying to catch them. Why don’t our Vikings go for the interception? Thank you for protecting Brett. That was well done guys! Loadholt blew it though. Too bad our defense let them get 14 points though. Get Camarillo in the game! Adrian did great! He didn’t fumble! I hope we learn a lot from this and win from now on.

Without Sydney Rice, they looked like the Vikes of two yrs ago – Artouse Pinner where fore art thou? Billy McMullin, where are you when you are needed??? Poindexter is supposed to be an offensive head coach – an offensive genius??? RIGHT, VERY offensive. Peteron was the most steady performer and he quits using him…. Nice call, Poindexter!

  54. By vlad19 on Sep 9, 2010 | Reply

Robins, Cammarillo didn’t play because Poindexter is into this sneak-up-on-ya style of coaching. He is so busy outsmarting the opponents, he outsmarts himself…. Bernard Berrian is pure garbage and fragle as glass – he WON’T go over the middle, he drops two tonight AND a punt, and trips over his own feet on the only punt he had room to run with it – falling down is safer than taking a punch to the jaw…

Did I miss something? How does a team get a penalty for pass interference on their own pass? And what about Kleinsasser’s GOOD catch? NO and their Refs are despicable and they should be ashamed of having to win by the Refs intentional poor calls and no talent. The skillfulness of the Vikings was hugely evident and the poor sportsmanship of the Saints was horribly transparent. It felt like deja vu all over again from January. I am pretty disappointed in the effort of the team in this game. It really seemed like the entire team lacked intensity and just went through the motions as if they were practicing. After watching the pre-game festivities, I really believed the Vikings would be more fired up than the Saints – I know it got me fired up and brought back all those miserable feelings from the NFC Championship game loss.

Forget about Housh – I watched him with the Seahawks last season and he was mediocre on the field and the guy is not a team player. The Vikings do not need a problem in the dressing room. Did AP have more than 5 or 6 carries in the 2nd half? CHILLY HAS TO GO if this team is ever going to live up to its potential.

Chilly give Favre more freedom to throw the ball and get Camarillo involved (he’s money on 3rd down), if butter fingers Bernard or Harvin can’t get it done then go after Jackson. I know he is suspended but would play a few games before Rice comes back and would take pressure off the other guys. You can let Bernard go when Rice does return!!! You think we got anything if Peterson goes down? You get rid of reynaud and keep Dugan and Tahi? Note their famous blocking abillities in tonight’s game??? But Childress gameplan was what????? Maybe run??? Maybe pass????? Figure itout we he goes…. GREAT leadership. Staff your roster with lame and average – John Sullivan gonna handle 350 lb nose tackles?? NOT. Berrian is the most overrated WR in the NFL and leave it to Chilly to be bamboozled by reputation rather than performance….. Might get worse guys, but the D will help us out. They couldn’t fight their way out of a paper sack tonight. And knowing you can run against the Saints, blitzing teams are vulnerable to large gains and big plays…. but we stop running the ball, controlling the ball in the second half…. and Berrian??? Kleinsasser?? Dugan?? Tahi?? Even Cammarillon…. are these guys the elite weapons? And Peterson gets 4-5 touches the entire second half. Brilliant Poindexter…. you surely did sneak up on all of us! Also Harvin needs to continue his routes out there. Not STOP !! Shancoe and Peterson I’m Proud of you guys as well !! It’s to late to get a receiver out there. There all gone. Nothing but scrubs left. Sullivan got his hat handed to him. He’s to small. I say,
run run run and more run !! Cheer up gang it’s only one game. Things will get better. Brett was rusty. But He’ll work the kinks out.

Don’t forget guys, Asher Allen drops the pick at NO 35 yd line in the first half too…. Gotta take advantage of the lone mistake a guy like Brees makes. But Poindexter never gave us a chance in the second half by his personnel decisions and his gameplan abandonment. Throw like we were three scores down… and none of it was working. Our line couldn’t pick up the blitz effectively and when Saints brought the kitchen sink someone needs to be open… Favre doesn’t trust the personnel. Who can blame him with Berrian dropping two, one BIG third down pass?

    Right on Cajun,

It’s always the refs fault when the Vikings lose–

Childress didn’t have the courage to go for the first down with 5 minutes left and when we had to run the ball, we did right down their throats. Saints 1 and 0
Vikings 0 and 1. Your already behind the Packers.

Pretty clear that the Vikings only objective was to make sure Favre didn’t get hurt. Can’t believe they lost holding them to 14 points.

I don’t care if it’s true or not but it’s fun to say that Childress is an idiot. Wish he had more guts that’s for sure. I’ll never understand why you punt the ball near the end of the game like that. Who cares if you don’t get a first down. YOU HAVE TO MAKE THEM GO 3 AND OUT, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE THEY START WITH THE BALL.

Coaches have weeks to prepare and they can’t even get a first down to start the year. Let’s just run it three times.

Was an expected loss. I’m pumped that we didn’t get blown out and the D only gave up 2 TDs. If they can come up with some pass plays that actually work team should be good to go.

Now, all summer long yall have been talking smack! AP does an interview and says ” were going to show the Saints what team should’ve been in the SuperBowl”. We only won because we were given the game or we were cheap shot artists. Well what excuses you cry babies have now. 2 first downs the entire 2nd half? We should have beat you 27-9 we left 13 points on the field with a drop touch down and 2 missed field goals. Green Bay is going to win the North because Brett is done and Chilli is well who he is. LOL! WHO DAT!!

We had how many turnovers in the championship game and still could have won??? Your gameplan was take out Favre at any cost, because you knew we had the better offense. You were one AP fumble before halftime from even going to the Supoerbowl!!!

Even a field goal there and it would have been season over Saints.

Is Chilly and Bevel so dumb that they went pass happy in the 2nd half when AP was doing so good. We had their D getting tired that is why they started running the ball. Favre was 4-8 with 1 1st down in the 4th quarter and that won’t get it done.

game was lost in the 3rd qtr.offence could not stay on the field, thus rendering peterson, who was having a good game a non-factor. To bad cause i felt we could have worn them down in the 4th qtr, maybe AP busts a long one. over all I thought vikings did not look ready to play. sloppy. rusty, favre looked his age at times the wide outs looked lost and stoned, except camarillo who didnt play in the 1st half because childress . who was out coached yet again failed to realize that camarillo at this point is the best wide out he has right now. our D line had a very bad game no pressure, no sacks could not stop the run in the 2nd half, they must play better.I know its only week one but it doesnt smell right I would feel better if chilly wasnt steering the ship but hes deaf, dumb, and blind. farve must stay healthy or its gonna get real bad.

Chilly, is the worst half time adjusting coach I have ever seen. Why did we get away from AD?? Where was Camarillo, only played a few plays?? Chilly has to go before the Vikes will win the big games, he chokes and plays so damm conservative…Come on Man…let your play makers, make plays!!!
