Vikings Add Receiver Via Waiver Process

Posted by Mike Wobschall on June 28, 2010 – 3:17 pm

We noted earlier today that the Vikings parted ways with 2 undrafted rookie free agents. But the roster tweaking didn’t end there.

We’ve learned that the Vikings have claimed WR Marko Mitchell, who was waived by the Detroit Lions.

Mitchell has good size at 6-4, 218 pounds and is entering his 2nd NFL season out of the University of Nevada-Reno. He was selected by the Washington Redskins in the 7th round of the 2009 draft and then was waived by the club in May of 2010. Detroit claimed Mitchell 2 days later and then waived him on June 25.

The addition of Mitchell gives the Vikings 9 WRs.

Don’t get why they added another receiver even if he is practice squad its the last position I would pay attn to.

Good move. It’s not like signing a WR means they aren’t worried about the other positions.

Why not see what he has. It is not like we are giving him 10 million guaranteed. I think we have this position set. Rice Berrian Harvin Lewis J. Johnson but Rice took a few years to develop, maybe this guy will come into his own just as berrian is slowing down.

Viking win on Waiver wire ???
Win, a fifth starer at best ??? How about a linebacker ot\r two.

We REALLY NEED linebackers and CBs.

the last thing we need is a CB, you are crazy is we think we need one. Our first overall pick will be lucky if he gets 100 snaps this year. maybe a safety to push Williams

We need some bulk for the oline and a safety to push williams and johnson. Sanford can do it but we need another one mabey a veteran and for the oline chester pitts if his knee is good.

Agreed chaz, linebackers and safeties are what we need. But the CBs may be filling in for weaknesses at safety this year, since we have so many of them now.

The extra receiver may just be a push to encourage current people on the roster to perform and show what they can do before the season starts. Don’t forget that Berrian did very little last year, and may now need to prove that he still deserves to be on this team. A little extra competition could be enough to convince him to bring his game back up.

This staff has done a great job of putting together a championship caliber team. I figure they must have a plan so go do your thing and give us another shot at the big game.

IMO, the Vikings NEEDED to focus on the offensive line and the defensive secondary. They did very little for the O-line which suggests they believe that the O-line will be much better this year than it was last year. I hope they’re right, because there’s no excuse to let another Viking QB get beat up the way Favre did last year.

Another WR suggests that the Vikings are going to let one of the existing WRs go. My guess is that Lewis will be looking for a new team very soon.

9 WRs – maybe we might convert or Cross-train a few into a few Safety positions.

We might even drawing up a few plays with just wide-outs and a empty backfield.

practice squad, any knowledge/plays he was able to memorize from Detroit/Wash. in the limited time he was there since we play the Lions twice and Wash, in Nov, converting to secondary position…are all reasons that ran through my head on why the heck we picked this guy up since I feel WR is one of a few positions we are strong at…in the end the Vikings organization has earned our trust through the past drafts and acquisitions that they know what they are doing…as much as I want to see some influx to our O-line – solidarity/consistency is what they need and seeing that we had 2 first time starters (Loadholt/Sullivan) and supposedly Herrera, Hutch and Big Mac had some health issues….we’ll see – SKOL!!!

    A CB???? LOL! We don’t need CB’s… LB’s? Sure…

we need a new center…Sullivan is to small to play center..look at him standing next to the rest of the o-line he is little….

Nice acquisition. The more receivers Brett has to work with, the more
confused the opposing defense will be. I do suggest that they up
    their secondary, though.

you think the vikes will add depth at the FS or SS slot before the season start? and if so do you think going after Atari bigby would be a good pick up for the team…he is a free agents that was productive with 49 tackles 4 ints last year(plus he’s a 5 yr vet) which help also.

    Marcus,
Thanks for the information. I didn’t know that Bigby was a free agent. Yes, he would most definitely be good pick. They really need to work on their secondary. They need depth. If Winfield gets hurt again, then they really need a back-up.
They also need to put a fire under Ray Edwards. They need to make strong
bookends out of Allen and Edwards.
