Vikings Trade Up, Grab Gerhart

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 23, 2010 – 5:40 pm

In typical Rick Spielman fashion, the Vikings have moved up in the 2nd round to grab a player they had targeted.

After addressing their secondary with their first 2nd round pick earlier in the day, the Vikings used their second 2nd round pick on Heisman Trophy runner-up RB Toby Gerhart.

To move up to pick #51 overall to grab Gerhart, the Vikings sent Houston their 2nd round pick (#62 overall) and their 3rd round selection. We’ll have more on this selection very soon right here on vikings.com so stick with us.

GREAT PIC UP…Toby is a solid running back. Not the best with catches, but a hard hitting power running back. Last year the Vikings knocked on the superbowl door, This year we kick it in.

Great pick. Can be used to pass block for ole Favre. Percy Harvin 3 down RB. Dont think so. He can catch and all, but when your bringing someone like Urlacher or Lewis on a blitz and the RB needs to pick it up, Harvin is gonna get lit up.

CHRIS i agree. TOBY looks really good heard ppl say the white stephen jackson minus the reciever which sounds awesome. How completly stupid do you have to be to move up 11 spots and give away your 3rd round pick for a guy who runs a 4.6 40?! Especially when you have other pressing needs like OG, C, ILB, QB!!! C’mon Spielman!! Gerhart will NEVER be a featured back because he’s too slow! He can’t even catch that great out of the backfield! Idiotic move to grab someone who’s going to be nothing more than a back-up and maybe play 12 plays a game this early in the draft!

Happy to see Toby come to MN. Would love to see Mc Coy come to MN now to follow up Favre, but how do we get him. Can’t wait to see Toby and Adrian run the ball, reminds me of Dunn and Alstott (Toby has a lot to prove to be an Alstott, but remember that tandem?)

I think moving up to take Gerhardt was a horrible choice for the Vikings. It made no sense to choose him there; No one else was going to pick him up in the 2nd round…AND…with the expense of a 3rd rounder?! I thought taking Cook with the the first pick was dreadful and this makes it ten times worse…With these picks, Spielman needs to seriously worry about his job. As a serious fan I hate both of the moves thus far!

Dont know much about this Toby kid but from what I have read its seems great.Ya we lose our 3rd which was 93 overall but we got the early 4th at 100, so that works for me also if we did not move up to get him I think clevland would have taken him.

  66. By Jeff D on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

jbork88, I do watch college football. The fact of the matter is we didn’t NEED a RB like Gerhart. We could have still picked up a decent #2 back in the off season or throughout preseason when teams are cutting to make room on their rosters that would fill that gap (which ISN’T that big of a gap). The fact that we could have used a (starting) Gaurd, a (starting) ILB, or a QB for the future are much more pressing NEEDS. NOT someone who will play 10-12 downs per game. It was unnecessary to move, give a away a draft pick AND take a RB. POOR PICK.

Situational use, etc… I don’t know a lot about him and haven’t seen him play. I guess he has a great attitude and was Heisman runner-up so I hope it works out. I still think we need some help at OL, DT, and LB. There aren’t any great QB choices, in my opinion, this year.

    Friends,
College football (much less the pac-10 last year) and NFL football are now directly comparable? Not even close. Gerhart couldve been had at the end of the 2nd without giving up the 3rd. Im just not sure that Toby’s skillset (11 catches in 2008 and 13 in 2009) are what is needed with Taylor leaving. I know everyone is right here, but this is an opinion…if you want to talk facts Im open to that and forget the name calling.

Jeff D, does a short yardage and blocking back seem like something the Viking couldn’t benefit from. If Toby is utilized as a fullback with AP at half, it would PUNISH teams in the red zone when they key off Adrian, which every defense does and will do. As for a blocking back, Brett, despite his talent, is older and needs as much protection as we can give him. Gerhardt can offer that protection while helping to keep AP fresh since he’s not having to pick up blitzes. As for losing the 3rd rounder, with the early 4th, they only drop 7 picks.
As for saying he would have been around if they hadn’t traded up, there is a strong chance the Texans or Brown might have picked him up.

No problem with Gergart pick. I think we missed golder opportunity with first pick. Lido Sheppard helps with backfild. Even if Farve returns, and I hope he will. He can only play 1-2 more years max. Picking 30 of worse in draft, from winning, it will become hard to get a NFL caliber QB (T. Jackson in NOT one of those) We could have gotten Claussen or McKoy. Now both will be gone and we still need at QB of the future. Missed the boat front office.

    People,

Why are we having a problem here? Hasn’t Spielman and Chilly earned our trust over the past 4 years with solid drafts to give them the benefit? I love the pick….we can debate whether or not they gave up too much, but guess what?? This team is not that far away from a title, and we need immediate impact guys to achieve that. If we need depth at other positions, there will be free agents out there still to sign after the draft to address other needs.
We tried to get L.T., and he choose NY, so why not roll with a couple of young guns in the backfield to control some clock, and wear down D’s!!

Good idea Carl, Tahi never showed me anything. But the Viking have never done that,(2 headed monster) they should have had Taylor and Peterson in the same backfield, but no!Then they trade Taylor huge mistake, mark my word he’s gunna make us pay,he’ll try and show up Peterson, then to trade in the same div.like trading with the Lions for them to get Best, stupid. The Lions are making some good moves Suh is an animal and going to be trouble for the next 6yrs or more. The NFC North is getting alot better.

I disagree, Chad, I think they actually have done swimmingly this year, especially considering the draft years pre_AP

  124. By nrhen1 on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

We needed to replace CT; picking up Heisman runnerup was the best we could do in this draft. I’m excited about Gerhart/Peterson line up in the backfield. Would like to see some help on OL, especially blocking on right side. Hopefully w/the rest of our pics, we’ll address this situation. Everyone, calm down and relax, enjoy the ride!

Loved this pick. There were tons of teams interested in this kid, we made the right decision trading up. Having depth in the backfield is important in the NFL as RBs get banged around a lot. I was a believer in this kid after the Stanford v USC game. Skol VIKES

I agree Randy J.,,,,i would pass on McCoy and Jimmy if he was still available ,,,i like Pike and the big Chippewa QB from Central Mich…… we’re set at RB now. lets not forget about LB’s……!!

Teams are in for a trainwreck ap and gerhart, get ready for a crash course collision. Especially aints and wackers.

  128. By scott on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

we moved down 4 spots and got to move up 28 spots in the 4th round(basically picking up a 3rd round pick) the 3 teams that picked in between us didn’t take anyone we were going to take anyway.

  129. By Mike on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Tahi hasn’t showed anything because he hasn’t had much opportunity…plus he doesn’t COST much, Taylor does/did. I hated to see him go to, loved Taylor.

All I can say is I thought Minnesota Vikings fans were smarter than this but I guess I was wrong so most of You can’t actually be true fans from the TC

Wow some of u guys aren’t all too bright. Gerhart is an awesome player. With the skill that he already has, running under AP should make him all that much better… Great Pickup Vikings… A little shakey with Cook but hey.. Speilman has been one of the best draft evaluaters. Look at AP Sidney Rice and Harvin… Dynamic players… stop dissin Spielman cause he knows what hes doing

  132. By chad on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

mike really? what about giving two thrid rounders to move up and take TJack….i like tjack but we overpaid in that trade

  133. By Deneng on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Peterson better be careful. I know that Toby has his eyes set at being the best back in the NFL. This will be the first time that he has not had to think about baseball and loose 10-15 pounds to play centerfield. Gerhart won’t say anything. This guy will do what it takes. He has got everything in his life from hard work.

  134. By chad on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

vikings draft history under spielmen and chilly, love what they have done but I just think we have always overpaid in the trades only a few misses but lots of depth and talent from what they have done.

Thanks for the list Chad. Pretty impressive group of players. A few misses, but a lot of homeruns on that list. Ray Edwards in the 4th round. I think they know what they are doing.

Don’t forget they traded 2008 first round pick for Jared Allen, another great move by our front office.

  138. By akvike on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

the vikings only got a second and a 7th for a 1st rd. pick.thenthey trade a 2nd and a third for gerhart?he would have been there at the end of the second easily.do we really need a running back?how about an offensive lineman?he’s a good player,i just think we payed to much for him.

  139. By alex on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

akvike he would not have been there beacuse 2 runningbacks were take in a row before the vimings would have picked

  140. By Randy Johnson on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

offensive line will be dealt wth after draft > during draft we get a linebacker > and make sure our defense is covered > if you have a great defense then the other team can’t score points

  141. By chad on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

scott it was a first and two 3rds for allen, one thrid too much if u ask me but he is a beast so can’t complain to much

  142. By vikelifer on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Lefevor,or however you spell it might be a project to take later on in the draft,he racked up alot of yards, but O-line or DB or a replacement for BIG PAT.I have confidence in Big Rick, and Chilly I guess.

  143. By alex on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

allen would have been worth the whole draft

  144. By scott on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

akvike we also moved up 28 spots in the 4th round, we get 2nd pick on saturday.

  145. By George on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Want to say again, No problem with Gephart pick. But we were in good position to pick up future QB. The quality one may not fall next year. Should have taken the opportunity when it presented itself.

  146. By chad on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

alex, no one is worth a who;e draft i still tremble at the thought of the hershal walker trade

  147. By Deneng on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

He fumbled once against USC ,but he ran for a 178 yds. and caught one. Had 3 rushing TD’s in that game.

  148. By nrhen1 on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Gerhart is an impact player from the beginning, i.e. blocking for Favre/Peterson, as well as smash mouth up the front/I-formation. How can we go wrong w/this pick? I am very happy w/him; work ethic is strong, he’ll work out well w/Vikes. Don’t be haters!!!

  149. By chad on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

but would like to see the vikes take Tony Moeaki from iowa the TE, could be another big target for the QB, can really stretch the field

  150. By scott on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

we still have 6 picks left, draft 2 linemen, 1 qb project, and 3 defensive players. 1 or 2 of them will stick. We don’t need much, too many of you make it sound like we’re the Rams or something.

  151. By Mike on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

chad, look what I said. I said PRE-Adrian Peterson drat years….TJack was taken the year before AP…..

but the kid is a bull, a good add no matter what anyone says, and he will prove me right

  154. By Sean Sarro on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

The Campbell kid from Maryland should be the pick tomorrow. 6-6, 315 and a physical beast. A tackle that has all the tools to succeed. I hope this is the route the team goes with .

  155. By HOGS on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Linemen arec cheaper and easier to aquire than skill players, so i dont think we needed an OL by then. I like Myron Rolle, Erick Norwood, Ricky Sapp.

Hey…last time I remember a Heisman runner-up backing up a super stud RB for the VIKES…we had a pretty good run of Super Bowls…..Chuck Foreman and ED MARINARO!!!….maybe this tandem will help Favre put us over the TOP!! GO PURPLE!!

  157. By Another Old Purple People Eater person. on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Gerhardt reminds me of John Riggins. If this guy can give us the hard hitting diesel engine running back like Riggo, then this is one solid pick! I was actually hoping the Vikes would select this guy.
    Great Job gentlemen!!!

I also like the safety selection. Even though you drafted him as a CB, play him at saftey, he runs a 4.4 for cryin out loud and he has hands!!! Wow

  158. By RW on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Shold have keep the 3rd rounder. All they have left is a 100, 161, 167 etc. That’s not very good in this deep draft

  159. By Alex on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Crazy good athletes picked up by the vikings… a little skeptic about cook but watching some of his games and the combine really turned me around… He’s gonna be a good CB… Always nice to have a CB that can play Safety

We need to go draft any of these players -Bruce Campbell, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah or maybe Ricky Sapp???

  162. By GreenMezz on Apr 24, 2010 | Reply

Toby Gerhart is a beast. Watched him last year single handedly woop USC (hate those guys) and he was amazing. Losing a 3rd round pick here didn’t cost much b/c of early 4th rounder. Would like to see B. Campbell OT with 4th rounder and then a large DT like Cam Thomas in the 5th if available. I do like Akwasi CB as well. Later rounds, maybe another OL, MLB, and S to compete for roster spots.

  163. By Marty on Apr 24, 2010 | Reply

I like moving up, but not giving up our 3rd round pick for this guy. I know he is a football player, but there are other needs that should have been addressed first, like quarterback and we could have kept our third round pick. Who knows what Farve does, and Jackson is not a starter!

  164. By Tbone on Apr 24, 2010 | Reply

Good pick– this guy has the potential to become the next John Riggins.
Very similar in size and style.
