Since my inception to the vikings.com team I have been exposed to many things that I have never done before. This is the first time I have ever covered an NFL team, my first time having a day-to-day blog and as of yesterday, my first coverage of the NFL Draft.
After arriving to Winter Park 2 hours before the draft began yesterday, I wasn’t quite sure how the day would unfold. In the hours leading up to the draft and even into the first couple of picks, things were pretty docile in the media relations office where I was stationed.
My job was basically just to soak everything in that was going on, stay updated on what other draftniks where predicting and have the option of coming up with any blog entries that sparked interest.
Once the 1st round got into the mid-20s, I really found out how much of a fast-paced job this really can be. Speculation was in full swing throughout the office and on the live chat on who the Vikings would select. While that was going on, people inside of Winter Park were making sure everything was ready for when the Vikings made their selection. I can’t say that I wasn’t disappointed that the Vikings didn’t make a 1st round selection after all the anticipation leading up to the pick, but the trade with Detroit gives the Purple a few more options. You can’t go wrong by moving back 4 spots, gaining another 2nd round pick, moving up 28 spots in the 4th round and gaining yet another selection in the 7th round.
About 20 minutes after the Vikings decided to make the trade with Detroit, Vikings VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman conducted a press conference giving explanation of the deal and offering some insight as to what the team was looking to do with its added selections. Mike and I then broke down what we wanted to get accomplished for day 2 and I dispersed from there.
I can’t say it enough times as to how fortunate I am to be able to work with the football team that I have loved for as long as I can remember. My experiences thus far have taught me a lot about this industry. Today truly is the start of the draft for the Vikings as they make the 2nd selection in the 2nd round along with the 62nd and 93rd overall picks; these selections will bring me yet another 1st experience as a member of vikings.com and, as always, a fan.
Be sure to stick with us here on vikings.com today as Mike, Ryan, the video guys and I will provide you with full coverage on everything Vikings and their draft selections.
