Nice trade, Spielman! Thank you for not moving up to take Tebow. I think that this pick (#34) can turn into a first rounder for next year. Some team is going to want to bet the farm on one of those guys. Maybe this is our Herschel Walker trade. Let’s hope. I feel that, if the Vikings were really interested in Clausen or McCoy they would have taken them at 30. I would like to see us get some O-line and CB help, but don’t reach for anybody. If the Vikings keep the pick, I would like to Kindle on my team .

kindle or price. no one else makes any sense. the other needs can be filled in the 3rd. and if i hear clausen or mccoy one more time i’m going to puke. and mays? really? please tell me you have at least seen him play a game…

  6. By sixx on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

well they need a qb this is the qb draft 2 hiesmens and a good selection of qbs take colt are clausen cause theres no other good qbs out there for at least 2 are 3 drafts safty and corner backs will be better for next yearatleast get your feuture qb to train atleast 1 year with farve macory is better choice i think clausin is over rated and bradford just gonna be a bust for the rams so take a qb the scrounge around for mays nobody gonna get him till like in the mid 30s are 40s we 60 but have a enough trade in picks to drop down and get a better pick take mays and call it a day now you get 2 good players cheap price :)

Brady – Mays is terrible man settle down, Vikings already struggle with pass defense and whoever drafts Mays will have one of the worst coverage safety’s in the nfl… we can’t afford to have someone who is a liability in coverage

  8. By dmac32 on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

I like Mays, too, but they say he’s not a ballhawk. We need a Darren Sharper type safety. The safety I really like that we can get later is Myron Rolle from FSU. Please take the best talent available regardless of need.

    Sixx,

You are saying there will be no good QB’s in the next 2 or 3 years. Jake Locker would have gone ahead of Tebow and Clausen in this years draft and he will be the #1 overall pick next year. Next years QB class will actually be quite good. I still think that we need to nab Clausen at #34 and think about coming up in the 2nd for Mays as well. Would be an awesome outcome if that happened.

This was a great choice. We move up 28 spots in the fourth and get a 7th round and move back only 4 spots. Also, I’m pretty sure the Vikings weren’t keying in on Jerry Hughes of Patrick Robinson. We get more value, have to pay less money, and still get the player we probably would have taken anyways.

i feel you on that dmac- i mean saftys are dime a dozen and theres planty of tem left in the draft that would work with vikes playbook scheams say we get a good safty win the superbowl..great wtg vikes but what we have to do is wait another 20 years to make a superbowl apperence favre is great qb all hand down but he look worn out in games 11 and up he starts good but the longer he gets warne out so take a qb you got a 30 pick mays will be around then if you take are not just get a safty with good hands but i say we take a qb then safty next cause i want a superbowl but not just 1 i want at leat a 3 peat for the vikes

  12. By sixx on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

paul good choice with locker but he want be a number 1 pick in the draft next year look at this draft outcome bradford hmm hes bust tebo is better then him but locker will go in the top 5 qbs but not first pick..the reason i say that is cause there a whole season really want know till the end of the seasons to tell then you got put lot of work in to do it and i dont think locker has that tlent to make that commiment but wish him all the luck

Good move, now take Colt McCoy with pick 2 in the second before the Browns have a chance to get him… ignore Clausen and Mays, focus on Rolle of FSU later on

Brett Favre has a nephew that is a great young qb. Wait three or four years and draft Dylan Favre. Brett can play that long. Warren Moon was 43 when he retired and Brett is only 40.

TAYLOR MAYS!!!! THE VIKINGS NEED SOME PERSONALITY IN THEIR Seconday..The guy can flat our strike!! Are you kidding?? How could they even think about passing on this guy…He would be the most imposing figure in the Vikings secondary since JOEY BROWNER –also from USC.

  18. By Josh on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

there will be 5 quarterbacks selected in the 1st round next year…settling for clausen or mccoy would be extremely foolish plus unnecessary. mays cannot cover. like i said above. kindle or price.

we should get taylor mays wit 34 and chris cook wit 62 tony pike at 93

  20. By Frank on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Josh, The Vikings need a guy who is fast, can hit really hard and can take care of his zone. He can’t cover really well yet. But he can learn and become great at covering, but if you know the vikings system, they do a lot of zone, and he would fit pretty well. So if we get a guy who we can believe in who wont miss a tackle other then Henderson, and Winfield then I say get him.

  21. By KG on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Has anybody actually seen mays play? How many of you are going off game play rather then what you read? Does he need to work on coverage… Yes. That kind of stuff can taught. But what can’t be taught he has.

  22. By purplehorn on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Vikings get offers again to move up by Buffalo, Cleveland, Raiders or even the Chiefs to get Clausen. If they don’t, they have to take Cody or Mays. This is shaping up to be a TREMENDOUS draft again for the Vikings.

  23. By Frank on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

I have seen him play and he is really good. if we are going off of two years ago’s tape and not just last years then you would say why didn’t he already get off the board, but this year he didn’t do as well and I believe with are defensive coordinator, he can be great.

Josh we are but Mays can be a great Safety and taking a chance with him is better then going with who we have at Safety because they made no plays. And maybe just maybe Mays can make those plays at Safety we need.

As much as I hate to feed the fires I really don’t want to have another season with Tavaris Jackson in the leading man role. Clausen is a solid pick any day of the week. If the Vikes draft him and Brett does come back he’ll have a season to work on the things he needs to learn with one of the greatest of all time, if Brett doesn’t come back Clausen will have a trial by fire as second man to Tavaris Jackson.

Without Favre the Vikings weakest position is at QB and Punter.

  35. By GreenMezz on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

No way no how should vikings use the 34th overall pick to select Clausen or C. McCoy. LeFevour and Pike are better than these two and at a lower draft cost. Mays is not a good fit for the system either and does not offer anything special above and beyond what we already have on the roster. I like Kindle but not as much as other teams out there. Best idea, trade down again for more picks and better positioning. More draft picks equals more competition in training camp for the few remaining spots on our roster. Better to find the diamonds in the rough with the depth this year offers than to over extend. This draft philosophy has worked well for the Patriots in the past, and it will work well for us.

i wish they woulda kept darren sharper back in the day, then we wouldnt be looking at replacing him. secondly, the silver fox is coming back, no matter who the draft at qb, favre is not a teacher, he wont take qbs aside and show em the ropes. make our defense bullet proof and get someone at left guard and tackle and let 28 loose!! thats the viking way!!!

  37. By Hogs on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

IF . . . Farve comes back, we should just wait till next year and get RYAN MALLETT in next years draft. he is the shiznit and way taller and more talented then colt or clausen. If we take a qb this year i say COLT Jimmy clausen had just 1 good season with weak opponents. otherwise pick pike late for competition in camp

My bad, I thought we swapped seconds with the lions, but we got theirs and retained our while picking two more picks

Nice work Spielman, now make sure you nail all the right targets, might also want to try to pick up RG Smiley from the dolphins while your at it, might help the running game and protect silver fox cause we are gonna need some solid play out of the O Line this year

    SKOL!!

PS. Get on it people, we need a new stadium and we better tell sombody about it

quit sitting on your hands and write and call the legistlators and the governor
or else we wont have to worry about the lions, packers and bears doing anything in the draft ever again!!

I really want to throw up. Why would we draft a Qb like McCoy who wont even be able to see over Phil. Bigmac, or Hutch if he rolls behind one of them. Why would we take Clausen who has less command in a huddle then Tarvaris did. We DO have areas of NEED and QB isnt one of them. Safety – OL – OLB (Leber doesnt make a statistical impact BUT he is a solid player, but getting old.) So this is where I think we should go – Sergio Kindle, Taylor Mays, or one o the OL. But I am pretty upset we didn’t draft Jahvid Best. Him and Percy in the backfield, him spelling for AP, its a homerun potential everytime he touches the ball, good hands, and we let him go to the LIONS. Cmon Speily! I know you’re doing something good, but make me happy lol

This was a good move by Spielman. He knew that neither the Colts (Peyton Manning), the Saints (Drew Brees), nor the Rams (just drafted Sam Bradford) would take a quarterback. By trading with the Lions, the Vikings get Clausen AND an earlier 4th round pick AND an extra 7th round pick.

  41. By Lennart Fischer on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

QB is covered for one more season. Favre wont stand back for revenging against Saints. Anyhow – what if we looses that game? How motivated will Silverfox be for the rest of the season?
This years draftpicks are divided into 2 sections:

1: Take that Superbowl home to Vikes and Silverfox this season
2: Prepare the team for next season, when Favre is retired and we still need the QB that can make a difference.

Build a new OL that can protect Favre this year and the new QB next year. The hits Favre had to take in the NFC final still haunts my nightmares.

Protect him – and protect the next QB too.

Fordham’s John Skelton might be a good QB option with the pick at the top of the 4th. Might not last that long though.

  45. By Derek on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Zekes, I believe John Skelton would be a good QB as well, much better than Clausen or McCoy. McCoy doesn’t have that great of an arm. We need one of those because then that establishes a deep threat. McCoy would be a terrible choice. I’d see if we could trade the 34th for a 1st rounder AND their second round in this years draft. I say this because their might not be a draft next year with a lockout.

  46. By Richard on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

I can’t believe so many Vikings fans are wanting a quarterback??? Colt McCoy, and Jimmy Clausen are not even in the same league as Matt Staford was last year. The Vikes are not looking for QB after Tebow was picked. There is no secret why we gave that pick up, the lions went for a running back not CB, SS, or secondary running back. Farve will stay one more year and Tavaris, although a bad track record, is the understudy you are looking for. He was are last QB pick and remember he held the record for passing yards in a single season. Not to say he adjusted to the NFL very smoothly. But he did look good when we he got some downs last year. Brett Farve helped so many players become stars last year. In saying that Jackson learned more than anybody the team just watch.
Next year maybe but sorry no QBs this year. Too many gaps in the secondary and a back up RB. Maybe if the oppurtunity presents itself in the last three picks we might take a QB chance.

I say we trade the #34 to one of the #35 – #38 teams for their second round this year and their first round next year. Someones creaming (Cleveland, Washington doesn’t have McNabb under contract after this year) that Clausen dropped and the cards are all in the Vikings hands.

  49. By SuperFan on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Vikings should take Tony Pike with this pick.
    Round 2, Pick 2 (34) (From Lions)

  50. By Scott on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Adding to my previous post, we trade the #34 pick for what I said, and have two first rounders for next year. We can then move up to draft the best QB next year(Locker), and ride Tavaris(if Favre doesn’t come back after next year) for a year or two during development. Plus nab a still early second rounder this year and not lose much ground. And if a project QB is around in the fourth or fifth round, why not? Give it a whirl.

  51. By VikeLegend on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

I agree QB Tony Pike will be an NFL legend he has the talent. And at 6’6″ has great delivery as well. Then cut the losses on Tavaris Jackson, he would even be picked up by another team on waivers.

    T. Jackson should have never been drafted he hasn’t added anything to the Vikings except the thought/myth that “Someday he will be good”.

  52. By Jake on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

All I want to say is After my man #4 leaves we need a franchise QB! Sorry Jackson is not that person and never will be. Last year we went to the NFC Championship with pretty much all the same guys coming back a little older this year but its still exciting! I agree we need some secondary help to make our team complete but didnt we sign Sheppard? I mean not the greatest but decent. But why not somewhere this year pick a good “franchise” QB to work with Farve and get use to the offense and get ready to take this team over when Favre leaves us? With out Favre or a good QB we are wildcard or first round lose at best.

Tyrell Johnson hits just fine. Pick up Rolle later in the draft, he can play and he’s much more cerebral than Mays. Better instincts too. Then you can have the brains(Rolle) and the brawn (Johnson).

we need a safety to fill in for madieu williams. jamarca sanford is a great tackler but his coverage isn’t all that. Tyrell Johnson is also a good tackler and his coverage is just below average. wth lito sheppard on our depth chart i don’t think we need to pick a conerback yet. If i was picking i’d say either nate allen, safety from usf, Major Wright, safety from florida (my favorite choice), and also from georgia, CHAD JONES. The guy is a ball hawk and a big hitter. And he played in the same coverage scheme like the vikings do. Morgan Burnett from georgia tech wouldn’t be a bad pick either. And at linebacker, it wouldn’t hurt to have a playmaker like Sergio Kindle on our team. Greenway and Lebler are solid but if look at how Demarcus Ware fit greatly on the cowboys both in covering and sacking. Sergio is that type of player too. But all in all i think we need safeties more than anything. Jon Sullivan doesn’t look good on tape. I always see him falling and most of the time just bull rushed out of the way. He’s good but not strong enough. Phil Loadholt has improved. We need a right guard and a center. Anthony Herrara’s body isn’t built well for a guard. We need a guard who is built just like steve hutchinson. about 6,3 310 with a solid frame and strong developed legs. Herrera is the old school fat belly lineman.

We don’t need a QB this year. Next years draft will be the time to grab a QB, unless a miracle happens and TJ can lead the team.

We need to protect F4vre better and improve pass coverage and start looking for someone to replace Big Pat after this season. Signing CB Lito Sheppard is gonna help. Losing Matt Birk hurt us as.

Spielman knows what he is doing and have complete faith in his decisions.

why not take avantage of having Favre as a counsler to a new QB? I predict that we are going to do really well this year giving us a high spot in the draft next year when most of the good QBs are gone! and then we are stuck with what settling? The last thing we want is to drop a newbee in and expect him to take us far. History shows us that it takes a year or two for QB to be NFL ready might as well start now while we still have Farve.

scott i agree with most of what you say, but if you really think some1 will give up a next years first round to move up 1-3 spots in this years 2nd AND give up their 2nd this year, i want some of the koolaid your drinking.

if they keep the pick i think they will go either Kindle, for extra help at LB and possibly 3rd down pass rush or Brown to replace Hicks, several solid DT left so they can grab 1 next pick. There still is plenty of deep talent left and personally i hope they trade the pick and get a couple more picks.

if we were going to draft a QB, sage or Jackson would have been traded…..if they do draft a QB< a trade will be annouced shortly after, you really think the viks would go into camp with favre, tjack, sage and a rookie, really peeps, really?

remember farve was a 2nd round pick and look what he did . if we want to get that 1st SB this year and maybe 4 more it has to start with a QB defenses always come together

Checked into Rolle at S, too much of a developmental pick IMO and not sure he’d be better than Sanford. I think NFL.com has its mock correct with Chris Cook at CB. Not sure he’s a perfect fit, but may be able to transition to FS for the Purple and Gold. Call me crazy…but I also liked what I saw from Akwasi Owusu-Ansah at CB.

I hope we can get Tony Pike.

Tom Brady Round 6, pick #199.
Joe Montana Round 3, Pick #82

Hall of Fame Superbowl Quarterbacks aren’t always picked in the first round.

Wishing C. Taylor the best, guy was a workhouse and is going to be missed by me and many Viking fans. Draft starts soon, let’s see what happens.

ok i say we go for clausen or McCoy only because i dont think that T-Jack and Sage will be a huge impact when Favre is gone. We dont need a CB right now because we got Lito Sheppard just the other day and our OL is decent… Stay with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round and dont trade it away… So grab Clausen or McCoy

It will be all good if favre comes back and we get RYAN MALLETT next year. HE is a franchise qb and has all the throws. Just sure up the rest of the team this year.

Obviously the vikings dont read this stuff or they would have drafted a qb, once again minnesota sports make a mistake for some reason all of are teams in minnesota make stupid decisions. Colt Mccoy is by far better then tavaris with more potential and have a chance to move up in get him and we take a rb, seriously we have one of the best in the league, we could have got a decent back for what we need him for in the 3rd or 4th round.
