Vikings Trade 1st Rounder To Detroit

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 22, 2010 – 8:51 pm

The Vikings have traded their 1st round pick – #30 overall – to the Detroit Lions in exchange for the Lions 2nd round pick – 34th overall – as well as their 7th round pick (#214).  The two teams also swapped 4th round picks, so the Vikings have Detroit’s 4th round pick (#100 overall) and the Lions take Minnesota’s 4th round pick (#128 overall).

We’ll have much more on this trade tonight.

Be sure to stick here on for more information and for a possible press conference with Vikings VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman.

I really hope we pick a QB. This year is a strong year for QB’s, Clausen and Mccoy are both great backs, we’ll only have favre for one more year, it’ll be great to get a new QB out there and back up, get the feel on the game for his first year and put him out there when Favre retires. I’m willing to bet either QB will do better than Jackson or Rosenfels ever will.

I think the reason why they traded their 30th pick is because they know no one will take a QB. Colts? Saints? Rams? Vikings = Jimmy Clausen what a dream come true. They would have to pay less for Jimmy Clausen especially when they have already used up a lot of money. This is the reason why

I sure hope Rick knows something the rest of us don’t. I mean grabbing an extra two draft choices is nice, but to what extent? Granted it appears the Lions choose a back thats gonna have trouble in the division with all the punishing defenses within, but it seems pointless. I may be a bit jaded because I did wait up to see the vikes pick, only for it to be traded…….

  12. By Bob Brown on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

I understand the point of trading down in order to get more picks, but we need a frabchise QB we haven’t had one since Fran Tarkenton and Clausen has all the ability to be that.

By moving down we get a few more picks, but we leave open a chance for another team to jump us and get Clausen. This team has only a few holes, one was CB, but getting Shep has closed that hole for another year. The only other kid that is werthy is the S from USC.

Dude, Jimmy Clausen is still available. I don’t think the Rams will draft another QB. So that leaves the Vikings picking 2nd in the 2nd round. That pick will be Jimmy Clause, trust me. It will be. I have a feeling.

@danny… Clausen isn’t overrated. If a player is overrated its Taylor Mays. Just because his combine was so great, doesn’t mean he’ll translate well into the pros. He’s way to stiff, takes bad angles, and misses to many tackles. In my opinion, he’s a undersized outside linebacker playing safety. He needs a ton of work in coverage, taking proper angles, and wrapping up the ball carrier.

We don’t want Clausen !!! The Vikes Are ready to win now not in 4 years they would be better off trading for big ben then drafting a rookie, Favre may be there 2 more years if you protect him. They need Defense backs and safetys so thee not giving up 28 to 35 points a game. Or maybe even a scat back for Favre to replace Chester taylor. Forget a ROOKIE QB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good move.

The Vikings won’t draft clausen. They know that there’s a very nice pool of QB’s coming out next year. I really don’t know where they are going with tomorrow’s pick, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be Clausen.

that was a great trade. anyone who thinks otherwise has their head up their ass. clausen isn’t worth the first round, and i doubt if we take him at 34. if he was good enough, we would have taken him. this team does a great job and they get paid to do it. all you armchair scouts and gm’s go blow yourselves, lol!

Come on now, and picking a back is just a waste, we need a quarterback for the future and the time is now. Colt is I think better, maybe not as big but look at his last two yearsthey were sick numbers while he plays bigger and better schools then Jimmy

Fellas, Taylor Mays might get drafted by the Rams tomorrow. I really think, as a true Viking fan, we need to take Jimmy Clausen with th 34th overall pick. Trust me guys, Jimmy Clausen will be a sucessful QB especially behind Farve. With 4 QBs, I thinnk either T-Jack will get released or traded or Sage will get released or traded.

if we want claussen he will be there. rams are the only team that now picks b4 us in round 2..they just took bradford…..the top cbs were gone b4 we got to them good move vikes….this is the staff that got peterson and rice..loadholt and harvin….they know what they are doing….

Look guys, there are a few good QB’s coming out next season….BUT…..Favre will be done next season. He signed a 2 year deal for a reason, I really do not want to watch a team that has the pieces in place to win 2 or 3 Super Bowls go into a season with TJoke or Rosey as our starter. the defense is not the 2000 ravens and no matter who we draft will they ever be.

Peterson is 25, Harvin 22, Rice 24, our LB group is young as well, with the exception of one, CB we could use some help, but we do have Shepo next year, Safety, well and upgrade would be good, an dthe kid from USC is a beast, but our safeties actually plaid well at the end of the year against NY, Dallas, and New Orleans. We need the next QB

If the Vikes draft McCoy or Clausen, who gets traded? Jackson?, Rosenfels?? Would their be a possibility of the Vikings impoving depth with a trade of either of these two in an area of weakness? Also, how much less does a 2nd round pick make than a late first? It may make good business sense. I didn’t see the “Old ball Coach” and the other USC (South Carolina) play this season, but the Vikes have definitely scouted them in the past.

our line is just fine you dont wait and draft a qb next year then you have to wait another year to devolope him by then peterson will be getting old along with the line and there are alot of guys that can come in on the line there first year and play including dbacks, vikings need to get a qb now let him learn and build around him your telling me sanchez is better then clausen or colt and look where he went and how he did last year. Other than swapping slots in the 4th round (2nd vs 30th), I can’t see the advantage of dropping 4 slots in the Draft. Is there a stigma in 2nd round selections? (Wilf saves big $$$) Certainly the Vikings could have selected Best, Cook, or Clausen as the 30th pick. As Neil Young says, “if you can’t be with the one you love… Love the one you’re with!”

I love to read all the idiots (90% of people who post on here) bashing the trade, and I am a fan as well who would have loved a 1st round pick. We moved up 28 picks in the 4th, received a 7th and only moved down a couple picks. At #30, we were already essentially a second round pick and there was no one worthy of that #30 with our needs. Clausen would be a steal in the second round and it would be nice to pick up potentially top 5 talent in the second round and have a QB to groom over the next year. The Vikings have had some fantastic drafts over the last couple years and I have faith they know what they’re doing!

T-jack is a bust! Get rid of him already, seriously. He is useless. Why sign 1-year contract? Waste of money 2million. Waste of time and roster spot. I would definately have Jimmy Clausen over T-Jack. Jimmy Clausen was suppose to be a top 10 pick. I was watching the whole draft hoping no one would take Jimmy Clausen. I want the Vikings to draft Jimmy Clausen with the 34th overall pick in the 2nd round and don’t have to pay that much money. You i-d-i-o-t-s

Jimmy Clausen ran a pro-style offense at Notre Dame. A comeback player. A gunslinger. This guy will be a steal. I have gut feeling the Vikings will draft Jimmy Clausen right after the Rams pick. I’m pretty sure the Rams will pick either Taylor Mays/WR/DT

  119. By Frank on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

Clausen is not right for the Vikings, he is not the QB of the future. He is just like Quinn. I rather have Colt, but we do not need a QB right now, Brett will come back for a year and lets win a Superbowl, and that can only happen if we up are Safety play so pick TAYLOR MAYS. I rather win one and suck forever then be good and never win one. Besides Clausen is overrated. He might be good but why waist are first second round pick on a guy who will sit on the bench for a year when we can use a starter at Safety, and a sure tackle. We need a sure tackler in the backfield other then Winfield.

did you guys forget that we have percy harvin that can play RB as well as Albert Young and we just moved Reynaud to RB/Wr as well? Ian Johnson was on the practice squad. This gives AP more time to run the ball and get comfortable in the game instead of taking him out ever other play. It also makes our offense less predictable without Chester Taylor. He was a good backup but reduced what AP could do. Quit talking about how we shoulda drafted best. Plenty of RB’s to draft in the middle rounds we didn’t need to spend a first round pick on a back-up role RB. We need Right Guard, Safety, DT and depth at LB.

  122. By Anthony on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

I think the Vikings should not pick a QB with their first pick tomorrow. Does Brett Favre really wanna come back and hear about another QB. I think the Vikings should really choose Taylor Mays. He’s dynamic and could help their secondary. I really would have stayed where they were and taken Javid Best but they chose to trade down which is their choice but now, I am really hoping they get Mays. As far as Clausen goes, their is a reason no one drafted him in the first round. After hearing about him being a baby, and complaining while in ND, and now with talk of Cleveland really wanting Colt and their just trying to drive up Clausen’s stock so MCcoy is still their when their pick comes. I really, really hope Taylor Mays is our first pick tomorrow. Then we can get a RB with our 2nd pick in the 2nd round.

Farve is going to bring us to the super bowl next year if he returns but we need a franchise quarterback im tired of havin tjoke or having to try and find someone all the time clausen is it. Farve will groom him to be a great nfl quarterback. I hope we get toby gerhart with our 2nd pick in the second round he would make a great 3rd back and blocking back dont knock him cause hes white lol he lead ncaa in rushing last year.

By then Clausen has experience and should be the starter QB right away. I say release T-jack and save that 2million dollars. Let Sage rosenfels be the back up QB because he has a long contract. I bet you guys that Clausen would put up better stats than T-jack and have a better winning record than T-jack as the starting QB with all of the talent surrounding.

Why not Draft a good DT to replace Williams. He only plays 50 percent of the snaps anyways and would be his replacement next year and 50 percent playing time this year. Or draft OLB with this 2nd pick. QB’s are a dime a dozen and they don’t need to be top 10 picks to be good. Pike or Leavour would be good 3rd round QB’s to draft as well and then draft CB or Safety with the vikings 2nd draft pick in the 2nd round. Then we can go after a RB in the 4th as well as another OLB.

I was suprised by some of the CB picks. or I would have taken Best. I do agree with Brett too and he has a good point. Even though I’d rather not see Percy running the ball too much. I like the plays he got last year. As far as Javid Best goes, I like him personally, but Ian Johnson does deserves a chance and I think he could be a good second RB when AP needs a break. He was great at Boise St. and I think they could get a RB later in the draft if they really want to pick one up. I think you could find a diamond in the rough at RB later in the draft.

I stayed up watching the Draft hoping no one would pick Clausen. Since the trade happened, I then knew from there on that Clausen would still be availabe at the 34th overall pick. Rams will not take another QB. The Vikings take Jimmy Clausen for the future of this franchise.

I think u made a nice choice letting detroit move up, save money with the 34th overall and get the 100th overall instead of 130 something. I do recommend Taylor mays tall and very fast safety with a giant upside. If you were to take Claussen i’d understand however i honestly think adding a safety an OL and and a good backup runner need to be priority. I think our roster already is very good so just take the best talent u can. Although i know we do not need a receiver but if you could get eric decker at a good price take it, he has played in the metrodome, and is a quality guy. While a QB might be a good pick, I doubt the Vikes are looking at them this year. It is going to be tough to fill holes at this point, but I see them adding depth. I just don’t see any difference making starters left, but there should be some solid guys to develop for the future. Like it or not, Chilly likes TJ and he is still a better option than adding another rookie to develop, as he has improved each year. I don’t think the Vikes are ready to give up on him, regardless of how unpopular he is with fans. It’s too bad the best two O guards are gone, because I think that is a huge need. Our line crumbled by the end of the season last year and If we don’t upgrade somehow, we are going to be in trouble. Other than O line and the secondary, we are a solid team. If they can’t get their needs filled by drafting, hopefully they will go back to the free agency market. This team is too close to stand pat from last year. We can’t ignore our weak O line and the secondary is still shaky. I think the trade was smart. Whoever the Vikes wanted with their first pick is most likely still on the board and they can trade up in later rounds if they need to, with the extra picks they got.

Bottom line if Brett Favre never takes another snap under center in the NFL, T-Jack will be the starting QB with the best chance of anyone else taking us to the playoffs in 2010. And thats what this is…the 2010 draft. The way the NFL is progressing, quarterbacks start their first season as of late. So if we dont need a quarterback in 2010…why draft one when teams like Carolina, San Francisco, and Baltimore chewed up our secondary?

Speaking of possibility, we have a championship staff, we are on the cups of a superbowl, and we have the pieces in place to make the team considerably better than last year with some solid draft choices. Don’t think they will draft a QB in 2nd rd. What facts? You can’t be serious, NFL people don’t think TJ is for real. You ignore the facts. What stats, TJ career QB rating is in the 70′s, comp% in the 50′s. Thats poor.

Rap99 – The truth behind your post is not that TJack will never improve, but that you will never change. You refuse to believe that the man has ever improved or ever can.

I know from personal experience that is far from the case. When I was 15 I lost all feeling in my lower lip. My band director gave me 1 chance in half a minute to try and figure out how to play my trumpet. I didn’t figure it out and he told me I never would. Convinced me to quit band. It wasn’t until years later that I gave it an honest effort (more than 30 seconds) and found out relatively quickly that I had the drive to not only figure it out, but to play that trumpet very well.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, everybody has the ability to improve. It is only people like my band director and yourself that hold others back, doing everything they can to destroy people’s hopes of improvement, for reasons that I cannot fathom.

We need Oline help. If Peterson is getting hit in the backfield you know we have issues up front. We could use a guard or center. I say we trade down again with buffalo swap picks and pick up their 2nd next yr and give them clausen. We could pick up our highest rated at player on the board (hopefully Oline/Dline/DB). There are a lot of RB’s in this draft we can easily pick one up later on.
We have a 2 year window to win the ship after that no more favre, pat williams, hutchinson, winfield. We need to find those replacements this draft and next.

Overall this is a good trade, we pick and extra pick and move back down 4 picks and move up in the 4th round. The 30th pick is basically a second round pick anyways. Just say know to Clausen this guy will be the next Ryan Leaf.

I see the Vikings picking Bruce Campbell OT from Maryland and that puts Bryant Mckinnie on the block. Say bye bye to him as we ship him to Washington for Haynesworth plus our 4th rounder. HEY CANT I DREAM!!!!

I agree, might as well trade down for a 9th round pick in 2173. We may then be ready again for a Super Bowl run. If Farve decides not to play, or gets injured we have T-Jack to get us to the big game this year

  216. By rdunc on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

Tjack has had a year behind favre now. He has to have learned something. He will probably get at least another year to learn as well. It takes QBs at least 3 years to learn systems and the speed of the NFL. He is a much better option for this year and the next over Clausen or any other rookie. Like him or not he never had percy harvin to play with or a mature pro bowl sidney rice. His preseason this year will tell a lot about his growth.

  217. By PurplePeopleEater on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

If that’s truly the case, Rap99, then stop writing him off. You are smart enough to know that we have some great coaches when it comes to signing quality personel on this team. Show us that you can be humble enough to admit that they have more knowledge on the subject than you do. It says nothing against yourself, rather it is a huge compliment to them.

We can write off TJack after the coaches do. They have been making spectacular decisions with the team’s personel for years now.

Vikings are in a position to win in Arlington this upcoming year. Taking Clausen does not help that goal at all! We need back end help and Taylor Mays is ideal. Quit saying he cant read an offense or make tackels. What do you think coaches are for, to prepare the athlete. He has the best raw talent available right now and it would be STUPID to pass on him

  220. By mnmaverick on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

While this is getting tiring, once again, you are letting your ego cloud your judgement. The facts and stats do show that TJ has improved each year. While he had limited playing time in a mop up role last year, his stats were impressive. You are wasting your time arguing for another QB project. All of them are risks coming out of college and the Vikings have needs to fill that do not currently include QB, so I will say again that it is highly unlikely they pick a QB this year. More likely, they will be manning the phones from teams that do want a QB and possibly trading down again for more picks. TJ has been in our system and like it or not, is still a strong possibility as a starter when Favre retires. He may not be the best QB out there, but he does not deserve the bashing you are giving him. Once again, I trust the Vikes completely and they still have faith in him. You can bash him all you want, but you don’t make the decisions here, thank God!

  221. By Brandon Wheeler on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

So we lost our chance at getting a “winning” QB in TEBOW. Clausen isn’t a winner, hasn’t shown greatness and MCCOY is not a leader, so I think we should pass on QB this year and build up our defense. Maybe there will be another chance next year for Favre’s replacement.

  222. By PurplePeopleEater on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

MnMaverick – Glad to see someone in here that makes some sense. It seems to me like either way we go (taking a QB with pick #34 or trading down) is going to improve the team. While adding another QB doesn’t appear to make much sense for this year, it would be much more comforting to know that we have options for the future. On the other side of the coin, it would be thrilling to see us grab 2 or 3 quality back-ups for other positions in the next couple of rounds. As we saw last year, any player can get injured at any time. We were lucky that we had some decent guys to back them up and lost little production. But there are areas on the team that aren’t quite so well staffed with reserve players.

On another thought, with the strength of opponents on our schedule, it seems to make just a little more sense to trade down if we can get a good enough offer. Our team is going to be taking a beating just about every week, and we are going to be better suited if we get the luxury of rotating quality backups in to the lineup throughout the games in order to keep the entire team fresh and strong throughout each game of the season.

  226. By Gruul the NW Troll on Apr 22, 2010 | Reply

The CB’s worth selecting early are gone. You had not faith in Best at that spot – understandable, as we can get a solid back up later. Don’t pay an untested QB as you know Favre will NOT show them the ropes to train them for the future…so we need options NOW! Take OT Bruce Cambell and save big contract money. Take TJ Ward in the second, also, and stand by for who you should have taken 3 years ago to be traded this year or next from Denver: Brady Quinn. Also look into bringing Brad Johnson in as QB asst. coach/mentor and watch the young ones grow faster than they will under Favre.

  227. By mnmaverick on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

You have a great point about our schedule next year. The Vikes are going to have a tough time winning the division again and getting home field in the playoffs. Depth is going to be key. We need solid back ups to survive a tough schedule that is going to have us beat up come playoff time. I think we had a lot of starters playing hurt during the playoffs and we were not peaking as a team. I am not against a QB if they feel that he may become a starter, but as close as they are and with a short window to get to the SB, I hate to see them pass up a chance to solidify positions of current need. I just hate to see the emotional bashing of TJ. While he is a raw talent, with some question marks, I believe in our system and as it takes years to develop a good QB, he is getting to the point where he can show why Chilly reached for him when he drafted him. I hate to see people get their hopes up that we can grab a rookie and have him ready to start in a year or two and just give up on a guy that has shown some talent. For every Sanchez out there, there are far more busts than success stories. QB’s are fun to project about, but it is tough business making a call on a rookie. We are just too close to waste a pick when we need depth. Look how excited Philly fans were to get rid of the best QB they have ever had. People love to think they are smarter than the professionals. I don’t pretend to know who the Vikes should pick at this point, but I totally trust that they will make the best pick for their needs. They can afford to take the top rated player regardless of need, because they have solid starters at most every position. Clausen is actually at the top of many boards right now, so I would not cry if they chose him, I just don’t think they will.

Good time for the Vikings to tank on a draft. New stadium financing will not pass now. Heck, even being an ardent supporter of a new stadium I would not even support it now.At least the Twins could make a 1st round pick and take Joe Mauer. This will be a Twins town until the Vikings at least make an effort and try draft quality players to add to the team instead of backups.

  230. By mnmaverick on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Tank on the draft? Ready to throw in the towel before they have made a single pick? What did they move down, four spots? Do you really think they passed on a player they desperately wanted to get more picks. I highly doubt the player they wanted was picked at the end of the round. If they wanted Clausen, he is still there and they knew he would be. If they thought they were going to miss out on the player they wanted, they never would have traded down. Why not wait till the draft is over before you declare it a bust? You can thank the politicians if they don’t get a stadium. I highly doubt they are waiting to judge the draft to decide on a stadium. Being at the bottom of the first round means most of the players who would make an instant impact are gone. Barring moving up, they have to play the hand they were dealt. They have done a great job finding talent in later rounds in recent years and this is supposed to be a deep draft on defense. Let’s give them a chance, shall we?

  231. By PLZSTFU on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

    1. Chris Cook
    2. Terrance Cody
    3. Sergio Kindle

overndone. Maybe you don’t understand this very well, but let me explain. A first round pick isn’t everything. We only traded back 4 picks. That’s hardly anything, and we moved up in round 4 and got an extra 7th round pick. You make it sound like 4 picks difference will be the difference of starting or sitting the bench. Spielman and the rest of the guys know what they’re doing and they got great value with the trade. Not sure what your implying by getting quality players. Peterson, Rice, Harvin, Loadholt, Allen, need I continue. They are all quality players Spielman and the guys have acquired through the draft. I have the utmost faith in those guys. There’s great value in round 2 and I expect we’ll get who we want. I’m excited for tomorrow.

SMART MOVE!!!!! The vikings will now trade the 34 for another pick and maybe only move to 37 or 38 in the 2nd. They probably will get taylor mays because they can afford to with the extra pick they got just for moving down 4 spots. And the one they will get for moving another few spots in the 2nd so someone who wants clausen can get him, its all gravy baby.

One more thing Brett, buddy come up north this summer get some fishing in hang out with the guys toss the ball around to your favorite targets and lets GET IT DONE this year!

Best had too many concussions in college. He’ll be brain dead before summer camp ends. Good move Vikes with the trade. Jimmy Clausen will be the Vikes first pick of this draft and if someone trades up in front and steals him, then the Vikes will trade down again.

  237. By lee12akma on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

I think Jimmy Clausen will be a better addition to the team than Taylor Mays. True, our DB needs work, but we have Antoine Winfield, Lito Sheppard, Cedric Griffin and Asher Allen. I suggest taking Jimmy Clausen because the QB position is not that deep in terms of depth, and take either a DT who will eventually replace Pat Williams when he retires (or have DE Montgomery be his replacement) or get a DB in the second round. Taylor Mays is a good player, but I think he needs a bit of work. If Vikings seriously wants Taylor Mays, they should think about trading up after drafting Jimmy Clausen. Colt McCoy is good; but if you look at it, Jimmy Clausen is probably more NFL prepared quarterback than even Sam Bradford. Objectively speaking, Clausen played with a team whose O-line had been not-so-great; has also played in an injured condition and still managed to get some wins. Furthermore, Clausen also was able to make come backs in games where Notre Dame was losing. It shows his ability to make plays and decisions in tight/difficult situations and bring home the victory. Colt McCoy is also a great QB, but I personally think Clausen is better. I do understand that Brett Favre is not going to be very happy about a new rookie QB, but let’s face it. He’s not getting any younger and within a year or two, he will definitely retire. Then who is going to bring Vikings to the play offs? Tavaris Jackson? I don’t think Tavaris Jackson is a bad player but I personally think Vikings powerhouse offense should be built around a young franchise QB who has room to improve.

  238. By Bleeding Purple on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Vikes have 2 second rounders, 1 3rd rounder, 1 4th rounder 2 5th rounders 1 6th rounder and 2 7th rounders. Clausen or McCoy would be great picks on Friday. I stopped trying to guess what the Vikes will do on draft day years ago. Guess we’ll see soon enough. We’ll own this division once again in 2010.

  239. By ILovePurplePants on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Just because Claussen comes from Notre Dame doesn’t mean he’s good. Why? Because Notre Dames program is no better than any other mid-major school. If you are going to get a quaterback, don’t get a good QB, get a winning QB! Tavaris Jackson is a better QB than Claussen. Getting a QB this year would be a waste as he wouldn’t play next year, and there will be no football the following year. Heck, Tim Tebow will be more successful than Claussen, not because he is more talented, but because he knows how to win.

  240. By Deuce Savage on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

Do not panick horn heads! This draft is camoflaged with the greatest crop of players in over 25 years! Thats two whole rounds of players who are best eligible for the 1st round draft! Thats over 60 players! This was a great trade. The Vikes will actually benefit by getting two outstanding 1st rounders in the second round and not have to pay hard money – we get them cheap! Overall, the Vikings are a solid team and getting two to four impact players from the draft is just bonus! There wont be another year like this for maybe 25 years from now!?!?!?

The good thing is by the time we draft either Jimmy Clausen OR Colt McCoy will be there

  242. By lee12akma on Apr 23, 2010 | Reply

I never said, just because he comes from ND, he’s good. Of course, I do recognize Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow’s skills, but think Clausen is better BECAUSE his team is not as good as McCoy’s or Tebow’s. If I remember correctly, 4 times Jimmy Clausen made a come back in order to let ND win against his opponents. He’s even played with a toe injury, and also has been playing in a team with a mediocre offensive line. He knows how to take a hit and still play. Because he’s been in situations where he was about to lose, I think Clausen would have natural instincts to try and win and stay calm, keeping his composure in those situations. Furthermore, Jimmy Clausen has been playing under pro-style offense. Tim Tebow only knows how to play in shot gun position, and never played under center. If you ask Tim Tebow to play in the Vikings, he will definitely have to learn how to play under the center because there is no way I’d have Tim Tebow running the ball than having Adrian Peterson run. In the NFL, DE and DTs are nasty hitters. I know AP fumbles a lot but if Tim Tebow had been drafted and he ran around like he did in college, we’d probably end up leading the league in turnovers.

Here’s what we need: A Future Franchise QB that can develop under a future Hall of Famer now. If it waits another yr, then we don’t have the mentorship we need to bring our franchise QB up to NFL speed. There will always be plenty of CB’s and linemen in each draft, and we have the pieces to make it through this yr. Not only that, but we signed Lito Sheppard as well, who can bring skills to our corner position. The pick needs to be McCoy. He’s got the poise and leadership, without the attitude. McCoy will be easier to sign and a better fit. And everyone knows we don’t need more signature holdouts in MN.

I think the Vikes need to grab a QB with their first pick in the 2nd round. Grab McCoy. He has proven leadership, has won big games, and came out of a great program in Texas. That being said, trade Sage to the Bills, Browns, or Raiders for a 4th round pick to gain what you lost to bring him here. Even if Farve returns for one more, we will have a true QB of the future and not have to worry if T-Jack is ready or not. If Farve doesn’t return, then we can let a competition between the 2 QBs and see who really wants it. Make T-Jack earn the spot instead of handing it over to him. We need future players not just ones we can win with now.

david comer and jason and others –

you are all morons… spielman is doing a great job… trading a 1st for a second did make sense – think about it… they moved back 4 spots to gain 28 spots in the 4th round (essentially making their 4th rounder a 3rd round pick since it is the 2nd pick of the 4th round) plus add another 7th rounder

bottom line is this – it won’t surprise me now at this point if, since they have 2 3rd rounders plus a high 4th rounder, they somehow combine picks and trade up and get 2 2nd round picks out of the deal… i would foresee some combination of clausen, mccoy, mays, chris cook, sergio kindle, brian price if that were the case

why not take avantage of having Favre as a counsler to a new QB? I predict that we are going to do really well this year giving us a high spot in the draft next year when most of the good QBs are gone! and then we are stuck with what settling? The last thing we want is to drop a newbee in and expect him to take us far. History shows us that it takes a year or two for QB to be NFL ready might as well start now while we still have Farve.

Seriously guys, look at what the Rams are going to do, if they are smart they will trade their first pick of the second round to one of the three teams desperate to draft Clausen. They will pick up extra picks and we won’t get Clausen, so either we will take McCoy or Mays. Perhaps the best option after seeing the knocks on both McCoy and Clausen is to trade out of the spot to one of the other teams looking for a qb and pick up more picks. Not that I like the option, I’d rather get a QB to study under Favre, but if they didn’t draft someone at 30 they aren’t going to at 34.

they need to draft a QB to either study under favre or something because tarvaris jackson is not the answer to the vikings future he’s probably the end of our future if you ask me they need and i mean need to draft a qb and use the rest of there picks on there obvious needs.

Great Move! The guys we want will still be there. We traded down 4 spots… and moved up 28 spots in the 4th round and get an extra pick in the 7th. That is pure genius. I hope we pick up Bruce Campbell from Maryland… Then draft Jake Locker in the 3rd or 4th.

I Think we need a qurterback for the future and next year we might not get this good of a chance. I believe our biggest weakness is center and right guard, but no draft pick will start this year. When Birk left our running game went downhill. Favre needs more protection and A.P. needs more(a) hole(s). Go with a 1.corner 3.linebacker

    C. Cook good pick, now another Defense player and I hope we get Toby Gerhart has got talent and heart and if we get him in the 100# pick or later we will have a player that is destiny to be great.

Very good so far, given the options available. Cook has the size and versatility they need in the backfield. LOVE the Gerhart pick. He can block for Favre and will be a legitimate third-down threat.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….Yeah thats what the vikings need another RB . Yeah and another CB too. And hey maybe they’ll take another 3rd string QB later on in the draft so they can have three. 3rd string QBs….So get ready again this year to say SAME OLD VIKINGS when they don’t make it to the super bowl. Oh well maybe they’ll make it to the playoffrs. Too bad they don’t give rings for making it to the playoffs. Or rings for idiot coaches that shouldn’t be coaching pop warner. Well maybe childress has a plan. Yeah hes got a 3 year plan to make it to the superbowl. Too Bad hes going in to his 5th year. Good luck vikings fans…..and buy lots and lots of kleenex for next year.

    Hey emotional

Since you were probably too scared to come back here, you will probably never see this, but since you were smug enough to tell everyone you would be back to rub it in when the Vikings picked Clausen, it needs to be pointed out you were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! You picked your name well. This was obviously an emotional choice by you, not a smart one. The Vikes did what they should have and added depth. They do not need another QB. Get used to the idea of TJ being their next starter after Favre. They did not spend all this time developing him to not give him a shot, regardless of what the fans think about him. The Vikes don’t care what the fans wishes are, they are trying to earn a paycheck, not play emotional games.
