Following the trade of Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, Don Banks of SI.com had QB Jimmy Clausen falling all the way to the Vikings #30, which prompted me to blog that Clausen wouldn’t fall that far.
I was convinced that too many teams in front of the Vikings had a need at QB and also that those teams who didn’t use their original 1st round pick on Clausen might eventually trade back into the 1st round to grab him once he started to slide. Then, in the 1st ever vikings.com Mock Draft, we slotted Clausen going in the top 10 and many of the other “final” mock drafts also had Clausen going well before the Vikings at #30.
But today the tide changed again and much of the talk was of Clausen falling to #30. In his mock draft, highly-respected NFL writer Rick Gosselin had Clausen falling to #30 and the Vikings choosing the former Notre Dame QB. If that were to happen, the Vikings would have an interesting situation on their hands. If they liked Clausen, he was theirs. If they didn’t like him, surely they could find a trading partner and move back while also acquiring more picks.
With all of that said, I remained convinced that Clausen won’t fall all the way to #30. I’ve been wrong before and I will be wrong again – this I realize – but it would be surprising to me to see Clausen fall that far. It can be argued he’s the most NFL-ready QB in this year’s class.
Anyway, it’s time to start the draft so we’ll quit talking about it and see what actually happens.
