vikings.com 2010 Mock Draft

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 21, 2010 – 1:42 pm

We’ve never published our own mock draft here on vikings.com, largely because we realize the NFL draft is as unpredictable an event as there is and trying to predict it is madness. But that changes this year.

Ryan Cardinal, CJ Siewert and yours truly got together late last week and came up with a consensus mock draft. After a few tweaks over the weekend and early this week in response to some player movement, the final product is now ready.

There’s a twist to our mock draft, though, because we stop at pick #30 and leave it up to the readers to make the Vikings pick in the comments section below this entry. Keep in mind who has already been taken and let us know who the Vikings should select with pick #30 in the 1st round.

St. Louis Sam Bradford – QB – Oklahoma
vikings.com: Plenty of needs here, but QB is the biggest of them all
Detroit Ndamukong Suh – DT – Nebraska
vikings.com: Could go 2 different ways here, but Suh is the choice over Russell Okung
Tampa Bay Gerald McCoy – DT – Oklahoma
vikings.com: Will McCoy bring back memories of Warren Sapp?
Washington Russell Okung – OT – Oklahoma State
vikings.com: If Washington stays here, Okung or Trent Williams will protect McNabb
Kansas City Bryan Bulaga – OT – Iowa
vikings.com: Could go with a S here, but Iowa standout Bulaga will be a popular pick
Seattle Trent Williams – OT – Oklahoma
vikings.com: Good value here and they replace Walter Jones (in case he retires)
Cleveland Eric Berry – S – Tennessee
vikings.com: Tempting to go with Clausen, but Berry can come in and play, too
Oakland Bruce Campbell – OT – Maryland
vikings.com: Combine warrior catches eye of Raiders
Buffalo Jimmy Clausen – QB – Notre Dame
vikings.com: Finally an answer to the QB conundrum?
Jacksonville Earl Thomas – S – Texas
vikings.com: Jaguars defense immediately improves
Denver Mike Iupati – G – Idaho
vikings.com: Dez Bryant here? Maybe, but Iupati is a popular and practical choice
Miami Sergio Kindle – OLB – Texas
vikings.com: Maybe a bit early, but Parcells loves this type of athlete
San Francisco Joe Haden – CB – Florida
vikings.com: ‘9ers can’t believe he fell this far
Seattle CJ Spiller – RB – Clemson
vikings.com: Someone finally bites on tempting Spiller
NY Giants Dan Williams – DT – Tennessee
vikings.com: Maybe LB McClain, but Williams shores up the middle of D-line
Tennessee Jason Pierre-Paul – DE – South Florida
vikings.com: Reminds you of a young Jevon Kearse?
San Francisco Brandon Graham – OLB/DE – Michigan
vikings.com: Hybrid 3-4 OLB/DE fits SF’s defense perfectly
Pittsburgh Jon Asamoah – G – Illinois
vikings.com: Surprise pick here, but Pittsburgh wants to address inside OL
Atlanta Dez Bryant – WR – Oklahoma State
vikings.com: Falcons can’t believe Bryant’s still there and can’t resist
Houston Kyle Wilson – CB – Boise State
vikings.com: Looking to replace Dunta Robinson, Wilson might be a good choice
Cincinnati Derrick Morgan – DE – Georgia Tech
vikings.com: Defensive-minded Marvin Lewis gives D-coordinator Mike Zimmer a toy
New England Rolando McClain – ILB – Alabama
vikings.com: If they don’t trade out, Patriots take McClain to shore up LB corps
Green Bay Maukice Pouncey – G/C – Florida
vikings.com: Packers put off adding 3-4 personnel to strengthen interior O-line
Philadelphia Taylor Mays – S – Southern Cal
vikings.com: A talented player improves an aggressive and re-building defense
Baltimore Jermaine Gresham – TE – Oklahoma
vikings.com: Huge talent here and Ravens add him to young QB Joe Flacco’s arsenal
Arizona Jerry Hughes – OLB – TCU
vikings.com: Could go several ways here, but Arizona decides to fill up defense
Dallas Anthony Davis – OT – Rutgers
vikings.com: He’ll replace Flozell Adams and he’ll do well in Big D
San Diego Ryan Matthews – RB – Fresno State
vikings.com: Sentimental pick who also fills a positional need
NY Jets Kareem Jackson – CB – Alabama
vikings.com: CB not quite a “need” here, but depth at that position is essential
Minnesota ???
vikings.com:
Indianapolis ???
vikings.com:
New Orleans ???

Vikings need QB of the future. Colt McCoy is the guy. Perfect for west coast system. If they can’t trade down to pick 37 or 38 or so, and take him there, they should take him at 30.

tim tebow! if hes available, why not. plus have him learn from favre this yr n let him get in on some insane wildcat plays w percy and ap.

Either McCourtey, McCoy or Tebow @ 30.

I believe that they should take a QB but it is a toss up on who like Tim and colt

  5. By Joe on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

Colt McCoy would be a good selection because we lack potential in the QB department. We need a QB for the future.

  6. By Shockzilla on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

No. 1 need – CB. I think they ought to take Kareem Jackson, or Kyle Wilson. If neither are available, take a QB – Tebow or McCoy, although if neither CB is available, they could trade down and take a QB in the 2nd round or later.

We need someone who can help us win right now. Otherwise the Farve pick up was a waste. I would go with Taylor Mays, a CB, or maybe an interior pass rucher like Brian Price. The only other holes might be some better pass blocking on the interior, but there’s nobody good enough left to take that high.

  9. By Benson on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

DT Brian price or Dan williams a strong front 4 will make any secondary look good.

vikes need to look for immediate help for this 2010-2011 season. Some areas the vikes need immediate help at is the cornerback and right guard position. I like Florida States Patrick Robinson, or Boise States Kyle Wilson if available. Kyle Wilson would be a good eventual full time replacement for winfeld because Wilson is characterised as a great tackler. At Right Guard I like Floridas Maurkice Pouncey. He mainly played center at florida but played some guard and i think he would transition well into a pro bowl guard for the vikes. after the first round we need to fill our needs first then look towards the future. O and we also need to give Brett Farve a phone call. lol

o and if the vikings take tim tebow i am gonna puke all over

Why all the QB fuss? Taking a QB would be the most foolish pick we’ve made since Troy Williamson. We are built to win now, not in 5 years. It has to be McCourtey or lineman.

  13. By Terry on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

No way you get a QB in the first or second round. McCoy is too much like Chad Pennington, throwing arm injuries and weak arm strength. If you are the Vikings in the first round you get a solid corner to help with an aging and highly injury prone Winfield. A lot of people think the RG position is another need, but Herrera has played well up until last year, and what a coincidence, he played between two first year starters in Sullivan and Loadholt. As the group plays longer together, they will preform better. DT is a good idea in the second round, as Pat Williams won’t be around forever, or and then in the THIRD round you pick up Tebow, though I would rather pick up Tony Pike, or BEST CASE SCENARIO, do what we have to do to get Jake Locker next year. But please please please, do not draft McCoy

  14. By Rick on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

NO, don’t do QB yet. worry about secondary. Are secoundry and OL is wahst took are supper bowl from us. lets strenghthin are CB or LB lets get are super bowl this yr while we have most of are cotracts. we need one finaly to get a frame of mind. the twins have 3 champs and sev div. so lets get one.

  15. By cjsiewert on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

The Twins have 2 championships, Rick. ’87 and ’91. But it looks like a strong consensus on a CB, would anyone like to see the Vikings trade up/down?

  17. By Nick on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

I would like the vikes to trade down a few spots to about pick 39 or 40ish to pick up colt McCoy or tim Tebow, preferablly tebow because with his work ethic and favre teaching him for a year, he will come out a winner. Plus we can pick up depth at secondary in the second round with players like cook possibly still available

  18. By Jake on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

tim tebow is not an NFL qb for real!

  19. By Karl on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

With Lito Sheppard visiting Winter Park could the Vikes look for another CB in rds 2 & 3? If so, take a chance on Tebow, he’ll either be GREAT or a blown 30th pick, no biggie.

  20. By Jake on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

    mccoy is a better investment

  21. By Ann on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

If the vikings draft Tebow with their first round pick it will go down as the biggest blunder in draft history . to waste a 1st rd pick on a developmental player with so many issues is crazy. Tebow won’t play for 5 yrs. look at TJ, he’s been developing for 5 yrs and where is he? Tebow has a lot further to go then TJ did.

  22. By Jake on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

ann, i think i love you haha you totally read my mind on that one

  23. By Scott on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

Pick ur poison:Tebow or McCoy. This is our highest need, take a good QB now because we will still get great players at the other positions later in the draft (our past years show you that).

  24. By drew on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

I say Missouri LB Sean Weatherspoon if draft falls like this, otherwise, colt mccoy or tim tebow. Weatherspoon will be a beast in this league and could garner playing time right off the bat in MN

  25. By PurplePeopleEater on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

Too many people are worried about our needs in future years. We already have a top notch QB plus 2 backups that have plenty of knowledge of the system. There is no huge hurry to draft a QB, we need to get guys who will improve our chances to win THIS YEAR. That means filling injury prone gaps at CB and MLB, adding depth to the OL, and building up the pass defense.

I wouldn’t be surprised or upset if we draft a QB somewhere along the line, but he is going to have to be a guy that is fit for this team and not selected simply to assuage fears that we don’t know what is going to happen and the end of 2010.

  26. By Erik on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

It was not the defense that cost us a trip to the Super Bowl and this draft class is deep enough at CB to wait until the 2nd or 3rd rnd. If an interior lineman like Iupati or Pouncey is available here that is the greatest need; or use this pick to get a DT to replace big Pat down the line. QB is a must in the middle & later rounds…they should take two if they can

  27. By Paul on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

    Tim tebow or colt mcoy

  28. By Ann on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

the vikings shouldn’t draft for need or for the future. take the best player available. if they’ve scouted well and watched tape there is no way that a QB at #30 will be the best player available. I can’t see speilman and chilly getting caught up in all the tebow media hype and wasting their pick.

  29. By David on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

BPA is important but it’s not the only thing. You need to project future needs, at least to an extent, and you need to consider what will be available in later rounds. From what I have read, there should be a cornerback at Vikes’ 2nd round pick that won’t be much lower graded than at #30. That won’t be true for QB. So they should take a QB at #30 and it sounds like Colt McCoy is the best fit and potential.

  30. By Ann on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

teams get into trouble by reaching for players to fit needs rather then take the best player available. If you had 2 players both rated the same and one is a position of need, then I’d say ok draft for need. but to reach for a qb in round 1 isn’t going to help the team. you can’t go wrong drafting the best player.
plus this is a very weak QB class, next year’s class is alot stronger, doesn’t make any sense to reach for a qb here.

    11. 7 pm. I think the vikes have now signed Litto they should also get Asumuwingo or how ever its spelled from Raiders trade #2 pick plus Berrian to Pats for Randy Moss. With #30 pick o-line or if Mcoy or Tebow is available take a chance

    The Sheriff

  33. By Adam B on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

The addition of Lito Sheppard takes a little pressure off the CB spot, at least in terms of depth even if he isn’t a starter. I say trade 1st rd pick if possible. Try to get an additional 2nd and 4th round pick or possibly trade for a pick and a player to fill some depth at OL, CB, S, etc. Then with the additional picks you have the opportunity to still get a quality player with the depth of the draft, but can address more needs overall, OL, CB, Saf, DT, QB and RB depth.

  34. By Bill on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

    Tim Tebow is a WINNER!!

  35. By Mike on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

I like CB Devin McCourty or DT Brian Price. Vikings picked up a CB today so tomorrow will tell the story. I would say Mays if he is still there.

  36. By John on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

Using a 1st round pick on Tebow or McCoy would be a mistake. If Pouncey is still there he would be good at RG or C. Pat Williams is rotating out on a lot of plays so taking someone like Brian Price and letting him rotate with P. Williams would be nice. It would be cool though if Dan Williams would fall that far so we could keep the Williams wall. I have never been much of a Ben Leber fan so Sean Weatherspoon at OLB would be a nice pick. If none of those three are still available, trading down to higher round 2 wouldn’t be bad. You can still get a good corner, or possibly a safety. I like Nate Allen from USF at FS or Brandon Ghee from Wake Forest at CB. The secondary could really use a good ball hawk so we could maybe intercept a pass or two this year.

  37. By Chaz on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

WE DON’T NEED A CORNER, lito, sapp, allen, that is enough depth behind our starters. WE DON’T NEED A DEFENSIVE TACKLE, jimmy kennedy is a perfect solution for pat, he is huge and will plug any hole. TTTTTEEEEEBBBBOOOOWWWWW!!!!!! We are built to win now, but we are built to win 3 years from now too, our team is not that old we have way more young guys than old guys. WHEN FAVRE RETIRES HE WILL TAKE THE REINS, AND THAT WONT BE FOR TWO YEARS!!!!!!!

  38. By Mike on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

I am perfectly fine with who ever the vikings decide to draft , because chilly and spielman haave shown that they know how to judge player talent really well and I know that whoever they pick will be the best player for the vikings, I mean look at last year, who HONESTLY thought that percy harvin would be as great a player as he was. Their 1st round picks since 2006: Chad Greenway, Adrian Peterson, and Percy Harvin… ENOUGH IS SAID

Die hard Viking fan since inception unfortunately living in Texas. Have watched Jerry Hughes for several years and Vikes could use someone like him if they have a chance. Leber is in his last year so we dont know what will happen there. Hughes is a converted running back and is extremly athelitic, has a non stop motor like Jarad and is very fast. Would make a great OLB that could rush the passer but with speed to chase down backs and cover receivers. Tebow may be intriging to some but is to big a reach in rd 1.

  41. By John on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

Lito was a good addition but sapp is an ok nickel corner and Allen sure didn’t impress me very much in the games I saw him play. Winfield is old and griffen tore his ACL at the end of last year. Even before the injury grifffen was more of a #3 CB. So CB is a big need not as big as it was yesterday but still needs to be addressed. If your looking for a QB of the future I would rather see Lefevour in round 3 not Tebow round 1. As for Kennedy he is fine for right now but I don’t think he would be a good long term solution. I don’t know why you would think Favre is aroun for two more years. His contract is up after this year and I don’t see him signing a new one. of course who knows with favre he could decide years from now he wants to comeback and play with his grandson.

I think that the Vikings’ first choice for the draft should be Taylor Mays because they need to get a solid safety because our safeties were terrible. But since he probably will not fall to the vikes, I think kareem jackson, devin mccourty, or patrick robinson will be good picks. i think it’s a clue as to what the vikings want with the draft after them signing lito shephard today. if they are signing a corner, that means they want a safety.

I keep seeing Tebow and McCoy but what about Clausen? My opinion is we nab Clausen in the first round then trade up near the top of the second round and get T. Mays. Third round should be a RB..at this point I’m not sure who would be left on the board but RB would be a good choice.

Tim Tebow needs to learn from the best, Brett Favre. He is a leader and very respected like Brett. Colt barely got hit and was injured pretty badly. Tim is a lot tougher, like Brett. They will both be great for the NFL but Tim is much stronger and will give it his all. Tim will never pull a Big Ben on his team. Brett come back!!!!!

Since we signed Lito today, we really need to go after a QB. I would love to see us trade up and take Clausen!! If that isnt a option, i would go with McCoy for sure! Give him one year under Favre and we are set for the next 15 years!!! Cant go wrong there, get one of those to guys in! I would select a DT in the 2nd round. Get someone in who can take the place of Pat when he decides to call it quits. The rook will have big shoes to fill (literall) give him time to learn it all and get up tp par!

C’mon Spielman, work your magic! :)

Take Tebow. his mechanics will come around, besides his grip is strong enough and release fast enough that throwing from the hip should be fine for him, maybe nobody else, but he made it work against those d-backs everyone wants to take, only 5ints. his versatility and running ability will compliment Peterson and Harvin. most importantly his attitude will lift the team. team chemistry is more important than award winners, any descent coach from any sport will tell you that. he has the intangibles that most players don’t; attitude, work ethic, loyalty, drive. that may not make an mvp, but it makes super bowls.

there is one key player that the Vikes need and that is a deep threat WR. The WR that i would like to see the Vikes take in the third round is Taylor Price out of Ohio. At the combine he ran his 40 yrd in 4.42, . Granted it is not R Moss top end speed of 4.24 but he is quicker than Moss for the first 20 yrds. From what i have read, the scouts were very impressed with his performance and feel that he may be as good or better than a late first round or early 2nd round WR. Just think, defences would no longer be able to put 7 and 8 men in the box.

Living in Indy and watchng how well Polian and the Colts work the draft has taught me this much; in the first two rounds you take the best player available, and in rounds 3-7, and in signing the undrafted, you fill needs. I’ve seen enough of Tebow to know that he will win in the NFL. If he is still on the board at 30 that would be hard to pass on. Similarly, if only 1 RB has been taken when it comes to 30 it would be hard not to make that pick. How often are you going to get the 2nd best RB available at the 30th pick? Jahvid Best has star written all over him.

We have always gone with the best available player and went from there. Seems to work. When spring training is over and Farve shows up, we will have everyone but Taylor back. Anyone drafted will probably be a backup anyway. If we really needed some position bad enough, we would have filled with trade or free agency. What about a trade of #30 and T Jackton for a good back up running back, that has eluded us so far. We should be happy we don’t need someone to start from the draft like a lot of other teams do.

I heard they might take Florida’s C Maurkice Pouncey, if available. The tiangle of Coach, Studwell and Spielman have done a great job so far together!!! I trust after everything is said and done, nobody will complain after the season starts!!!

Put immediate need aside, and always pick the best available player in the 1st round. We took AP when Chester came off a 1200+ yard season. People thought we were crazy when we took Moss in 98 when we had Jake Reed and Chris Carter. When we go by immediate need we take guys like Troy Williamson, and Damitrius Underwood.
Don’t reach for a CB. We just signed Shepherd, and Sapp is a good backup/nickel guy. I think if Cody is there from Alabama, we should snap him up. He is an outstanding run stuffer, can contribute right away, and can block kicks.

There is only one thing to be said: Pick the best player avaliable! And do not go after Tebow or McCoy just because this league is a QB driven league. It is creazy to reach out for a mid 2 nd round talent at the end of 1st round. I know that Brad childress and speilman will make a great decision like the always do. I have confidence that we will not waste our pick at 30 and will not go after Tebow / McCoy. We will draft the Best Player. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

I am back for another senerio. They could rethink Randy Moss since sydney Rice wants to test the waters in free agency. U get him cheap as well and he will produce.
