Report: QB Jackson To Sign RFA Tender Soon

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 15, 2010 – 3:32 pm

The Vikings have a pair of restricted free agents (RFAs) who have yet to sign their tender offers – DE Ray Edwards and QB Tarvaris Jackson. But according to Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune, it sounds as if Jackson will be signing his tender within 24 hours.

If and when Jackson does sign his tender, he’ll be off the RFA market. The tradeoff, though, is that Jackson has a 1-year contract that will pay him $1.176 million. Since he’ll be under contract, look for Jackson to report to Winter Park to take part in the Vikings voluntary offseason program and any mandatory activities.

Edwards will then be the only Vikings RFA to not sign his tender, meaning he likely won’t participate in the Vikings offseason program. He was tendered at the 1st round level and would make $2.5 million next year. As Zulgad points out, though, expect Edwards to eventually sign his tender by June 15 because that’s when the Vikings have the right to drop the tender offer from $2.5 million to 110% of Edwards 2009 base salary, which would be $1.1 million.

trade t jack for big Ben R from steelers thats what im talking about!

  2. By bullyd on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

Have Jackson do us all a favor and not sign. If he was worth it he would have been playing already. When he came in to spell Farve he showed the same stupid mistakes as he did the year before. Come on, you didn’t even see him talking to Farve on the sideline, so how much do you think he has learned from having Farve there? I’ll tell you 0 !

  3. By JOhn on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

Yes, because 14 of 21 201 yards 1 td and 0 pics is the same stupid mistakes… One catch was rather lucky i will admit, but when you take that away he still did well. Bringing big sexual assault ben in is not going to help. Favre should be back and Jackson should sit under him and learn for another year. I think if clausen could drop to us (its possible somewhat) then grab him and trade sage to the raiders for a pick in next years draft. (4th would be nice since thats what we sent for him) then if we win the SB (cross fingers) and favre retires, compete for a starter and draft or pick up someone like david carr as a vet.
    this just in…
Tim Tebow still sucks.. DO NOT DRAFT HIM VIKES
    that is all

T-Jack will prove everyone wrong. Stop with the blind hate, this kid has done nothing wrong.

    This is great news!

I like T-Jack and am looking forward to seeing how he’s progressed this year.

okay t-jac is a good quarterback and you rarley see young quarterbacks come in and play insane like favre does…he has a total of like 20 starts if that…and in 08 he had a QB rating of 95 with 9 tds and 2 itns in like the 4 games he started

  7. By ben on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

jackson is just fine, fans never really gave him a chance, but draft Tebow, im telling you

  8. By lafdresq165 on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

let t-jac walk lets go after mike vic ,run him in our version of the wildcat long with a d and percy and let the opposing team pick thier poison.

  9. By Benson on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

Put favre and tjack in at the same time, If favre feels the heat inside the pocket do a quick pass to tjack and let him scramble and throw it, Just a quick thought for fun.

  10. By SkolVikings on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

No, I don’t want the Vikings to deal with Big Ben… the LAST thing we need is a womanizer as our QB.

  11. By P-Fal on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

We should trade 2 or 3rd round for Vick, Imagine the damage we could do with AP Percy and Vick in the backfield? Than worry about the secondary in the draft. Trade a 4th round pick for Sage, Sounds like a Superbowl Team to me..

    BTW: Bears still suck

  12. By Dj on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

trade tjack.. and keep ray edwards

  13. By purplehorn on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

I’m still hoping that T-Jack keeps learning and developing. I really think the kid has some great potential and learning from the best doesn’t hurt (Favre). I know Edwards feels he is worth more money and after last season he is proving it. I hope Ray does stay with us and the Vikings don’t cut his tender down. He is just taking care of business- but the guy is very good. I don’t think even Ray would argue that his other linemen elevate his numbers and play.

  14. By SJ McKinley on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

We definetly need to keep Ray Edwards!

  16. By bsurfus on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

Vick is not the answer after Farve is gone and neither is Tjack…let him go. Get a fresh draft QB that can run the west coast offence. neither Vick or Tjack can do that.

  17. By Bozz on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

Yeah lets shove jackson out the house to make room for new and hopefully better QB.

  18. By Backslider on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

It’s important to get Tarvaris locked up for next year. He’s a great security blanket to have — he knows the offense well, moves the chains and has been exemplary in handling the Favre call-in. He’s a great team player and has been learning all along. He was thrown into the fire way too early, but his mental part of the game has come a long ways and he’s ready to step in and lead. Good move Vikes!

  19. By Kevin on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

You should all be crazy to say trade t-jack he is at least a good backup QB but I think he is learning each year and getting better but some people don’t realize and if your going to hate a player that much go big a different team for example I don’t like Tim Tebow but chances are I am going to like him if he ends up with vikings but I hope they don’t but whatever vikings do you have to hope for the best not say a player suck because basically your saying the vikings sucks.

dont get rid of t jack or edwards because why get rid of a qb that you use and did you see edwards play againts dallas

  22. By moorevikes on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

all he needs is the confidence of his coaches and himself and he could be a great qb. hopefully he is getting it. i would like to actually go with him this year over farve. draft a qb in the second rd trade up if need be if tjack turns out to be a bust toss the rook in right away. my opinion is if favre doesn’t let the team know wether he’ll be back or not before the draft he doesn’t deserve to play for the vikes anyway. take the best player available in the first (out of two positions left tackle or corner (i really think our safeties are okay), third rd is for position not picked in first, 4th rd right gaurd, 5th rd another corner or rb, sixth position not picked in 5th, use 7th rd and mckinnie as trade to move up in the second to get best avail. qb i like mccoy not sure what qb will make it to second rd though

  23. By moorevikes on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

yeh use edwards as trade as well (from what i heard he’s not really a team player) i like robison better anyway

michigan with the 30th pick and draft an offensive lineman on day two.

  26. By MNsoldier on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

T-Jack is a very good athlete, but he is a sub level QB, quit with the long project qbs just another daunte. Get a QB that is a passer first and a runner out of fear. Trade T-jack for anything we can get.

  27. By CA Norwegian on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

Mr. Ed should be given credit where it is due. Like in the Win over Dallas. T-Jack does not inspire confidence from most. Favre seemed to think more of him than most fans or talking heads. When he had playing time, he did OK last year, right? Remember when all we needed was a bootleg and field goal to go to the superbowl? We will miss Ed, please keep him. T-Jack, has at least a been with the system. I am neutral on him.

  28. By lapguru on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

I love tjack. He is mobile gota great arm and the guys like him. He is learning more every year. When he was the starter we didn have percey and our WR’s werent as experienced along with out TE wasnt catching the ball and all of that was takin out on him. Our caoches need to open up the play book a little and let him do his thing if they do he wil shine. He has all the ability in the world and we have all the talent around him. He will do well!!!!

  29. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

LAPGURU. TJ blew with the same talent as favre (except harvin), the guy is not an NFL QB. As for 14/21 in the season, that all came in a mop-up role in games already won, that’s like scoring with your sister.

Dedicated to those who say “cut T-Jack” or “let T-Jack walk” or any other form of “T-Jack sucks”

    SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!

I really hope that wether it’d be this year, OR Favre this year and Tarvaris next year – That Tarvaris steps on the field and dominates and makes all you haters zip it up for good! Tarvaris is a good guy, with great potential! There are alot of Vikings’ fans that believe in Tarvaris – sometimes makes me wonder if you Tarvaris haters are the same people who hate Brad Childress

  31. By SkolVikings on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

You know, T-Jack looked better every year he played, and I know he played sparingly last year, but when he was in, he looked better. A little more accuracy with his arm, and some better thinking on his feet, and he could be a decent QB.

Bears will be better next year with Urlacher back, and chester Taylor.

  32. By Mike on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

I say play Tarvaris in 3 1/2 of the 4 pre-season games and let him polish what he has learned thus far! I’m still healing over Chester Taylor leaving us for the Bears.

If Favre does not come back, then I see the Vikings, Packers, and Bears battling for 1st in the division and I believe that will be a pretty evened-out battle! If Favre DOES return, then the Packers and Bears will battle for 2nd, no contest, Vikings win again! Not only the division, but this time the super bowl!

Hmmm did I forget about a team? (*coughs Lions*) lol

  33. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

I do not hate TJ, or chilly, I do not think TJ will ever be a good QB. I rooted for him as our starter, but what i see, is that he just doesn’t have “it”.

  34. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

MIKE, be real, TJ will never dominate as a QB, it just will not happen.

  35. By Cooley on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

Tavaris really? Doesn’t anyone remember the ’08 season? Tj took us to to 2-5 start until gus frerotte stepped in and took us to the playoffs. But who choked in the Eagle playoff game? Come one this isn’t a rocket science scenario. Keep edwards, trade TJ!

  36. By Backslider on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

Why are so of you dopes living in the past about Tarvaris when there’s more substantial evidence recently? His touchdown/interception ratio of 11/2 over the course of the last 2 years makes him arguably the best backup in the league. He’s had a chance to mature mentally behind Favre and just getting more reps in our system. And those of you who say “he never” must have some other agenda because there’s guys out there like Gannon who were written off early in their career but came back to be productive later on and Tarvaris hasn’t even logged as much downtime as him. At the very least, he’s arguably the best backup in the league and I contend he’s ready to take a more active role in our offense.

  37. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

COOLEY, I remember, and could not agree more

  38. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

if he was the best back-up in the league he would have been grabbed by some team for a 3rd round pick, be serious!

  39. By Backslider on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

You must not understand much about tenders. The Vikings had the right of first refusal to match any offer a team would make. They were limited on their tenders and the third round tender was just a number. If a team would have been in the ballpark salary wise to the 1.1 mil they offered, they would have upped their proposal to match it, within reason.

  40. By Backslider on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

By the way rap99, if you’re so smart name a better backup in the league and we’ll compare Tarvaris’ numbers and see if my conclusion is correct.

  41. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

    I would take sage over TJ. TJ-58.7 comp%, 6.7YPA, 21TD/18INT, 77.9QB Rating. Sage.62.5 comp%,7.4YPA, 30TD/29Int, 81.2QB rating, playing for bad teams.

  42. By fmfan on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

rap99 Sage has played 9 years to Tjacks 4 years. In the 4 years he played in miami his stats were 54/109 for 776 yards with 3tds and 3ints. That is what less than 50% comp. 7 ypa and I’m pretty sure a qb rating less than 70.

  43. By Ben on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

You can make the arguement that TJack is the best backup, but I think that is stretching reality. Guys like Byron Leftwich and Chad Pennington are more experienced and have proven themselves on more occasions than TJack. I would love to see TJack justify the viking’s investment, but the very fact that he’s been beaten out of the starting job by Brad Johnson and Gus Frerotte hurts his credibility and the argument that he is the best backup in the league.

  44. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

FMFAN, you can spin stats to mean anything, those are the numbers, if u want to go by stats, go by stats. Sage’ no. are better, don’t make excuses.

  45. By rap99 on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

Backslider, if Favre does not play next season and TJ is the QB, vikes are not superbowl contenders, if Favre is our QB we are superbowl contenders. Think what you want about TJ, NO SUPERBOWL IF HE IS THE QB!!! PERIOD!! IF YOU ARE SO SMART YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT!!!!!!! YOU MUST NOT UNDERSTAND MUCH ABOUT FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. By Backslider on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

So what’s your plan genius? Draft Colt McKoy and watch him lead us to the promised land? Tarvaris is more equipped to run our offense than any other realistic option out there after Favre. He’s shown progress each and every year he’s been in the league and there’s no denying that. Sure I want Favre back … who doesn’t … but I’m saying Tarvaris has done nothing to warrant the kind of negative criticism that you or your ilk have conveyed. And by the way, saying we’re not Super Bowl contenders without Favre really is a slap in the face to the rest of the team. I think if it came down to it, Adrian could put this team on his shoulders and push us to Destination Dallas.

i like the part in the opening blog were it says vikings voluntary offseason program or mandatory activities. What exactly are the mandatory activities bret is taking part of. Showing up for the last preason game in uniform for 2 quarters and calling it good. Last year was last year. We have a tougher schedule this year and teams have a chance to look at bret on tape with minnesota. It will not be the same this year! Keep both our QB’S since bret is still on his own time scedule and is letting us go into the draft with the most important position still up in the air. Pick up mccoy if he is still there and then deal someone later for what you can get.

  53. By Robin S. on Apr 18, 2010 | Reply

Keep Ray Edwards and trade Tarvaris Jackson! We need Brett to go to the Super Bowl. Brett makes every player on the team play at their best and that is why he can get them to the Super Bowl. Jackson doesn’t have that. We don’t need Big Ben. He is a disgrace. We need someone like Tim Tebow who can learn from Brett and will be good for the team. He is a leader and is a very respected person, like Brett.

This is great news! I’m hoping Favre will be back of course, but Jackson is our next best option at this point. We easily have the best QB group in the league, even ESPN gave us credit for that last year. Out of all of our REALISTIC options at this point, none compare to T-Jack or Sage if Favre retires.

T.J. has horrible fundamentals and has had a lot of time in our system and still can’t get it down. i say trade him for what we can get. he was suppose to be the “answer” just like troy williamson at WR to replace Moss, and he was horrible. I know he can run, but he can’t throw on the run. he barely sets his feet and how many times have we seen that stupid jump pass of his and he is not accurate even when he does set his feet. You can teach plays and systems all you want and be liked by the team because your a nice guy, but without fundamentals your not going to be great. The stats for last year that he had were in games that we had it won and they just brought out brett. The other teams defense wasn’t playing hard, and that helped T.J. move the ball a lot easier and pad his stats. Sage could have stepped in and done everything T.J. did in those games. I agree with rap99 on this topic. and those of you that say t.j. haters will be proven wrong one day, here is my e-mail address, when that day comes send me an e-mail and i will say sorry. r.perryedmiston@yahoo.com. But i will take any QB that will take us to the bowl, even if it is a 10 year old. I beg and pray for it every year. Go Vikes!
