Get All Of Your QB Questions Answered

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 15, 2010 – 11:02 am

The NFL draft and the anticipation of it represents my favorite part of the NFL’s offseason. Regardless of how good or bad the team you follow happens to be, the draft is an event that yields optimism, opportunity and plenty of room for speculation.

Also, the draft and the anticipation of it provides us with lots of work – from updating Mock Madness to answering fan questions via the Monday Morning Mailbag.

And speaking of the Monday Morning Mailbag, the most frequently-asked question I receive each week is generally about a QB in this year’s draft class and whether or not he might end up with the Vikings when the draft is over. I do my best to answer the question intelligently while also giving my personal opinion or preference.

But there are a couple of other football followers whose opinions I respect that have opinions on this year’s crop of QBs.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, who analyzes Vikings preseason games on TV, has his list of this year’s top 5 QBs listed here on NFL.com. Also, Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden has studied the top 4 QB prospects in this year’s draft closely. You can read his written assessment of those players here and you can also tune in to ESPN tonight at 6:00 p.m. CT to watch Gruden’s QB Camp, a SportsCenter special that will show behind-the-scenes footage of Gruden meeting with each of the top 4 QB prospects.

So I know, just like any other vikings fan, that we need a QB for the future… Do you think it would be wiser to take a Colt Mccoy or Jimmy Clausen in the first round… or take some protection in maybe a Maurkice Pouncey if he gets down to us or someone else on the O line and wait for a possible sleeper QB in a later round?

I was wondering if John David Booty is still with the team?

Just saw on NFL Network that the Steelers might be shopping Ben Rothlisberger!!! Would the Vikings be interested in him? Wow, would that be great or what!

we don’t need a qb we need to work on the D so we don’t give up 25-30+ points a game. If we give up less than 20 points a game we should do as good if not better than last year !!

  5. By fmfan on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

I believe Booty is in Houston.

The vikings have been horrible drafting Q.B.’s . Are they just bad at picking them or don’t they know how to develop them?

fmfan – you need to get your facts straight before ranting about things. Our team gave up an average of 19.5 ppg. When considering TOs for TDs or even the ones that put the opposition in scoring position before the offense takes a snap, our defense is better than that.

Still our team needs to focus on improving the passing defense first and foremost, and then find a QB of the future. Hopefully there will be someone with good promise to slip through to the 2nd or 3rd round.

wwe aren’t patient enough with our QBs and we had bad recievers in the last few years…thats why our quarterbacks in the last 5 years suck

Big Ben is on the trading block why not go get him…he is going to get suspended so even if brett doesnt come back we have a two time superbowl winning quarterback with us.

People seem to forget about Culpepper. He was good when he did what he did. He just needed a guy like Randy Moss in order to achieve that. Then some guy named Red decides he’s going to get rid of the team and flush it down the toilet at the same time. In his last action as owner of the team he trades away Moss for some extra cash in HIS pocket. Then you have a horrible coach bringing in horrible receivers and still expecting Culpepper to play the same way. He did and he got injured, and hasn’t been the same since.

So we’ve been pulling in a few quick fixes (B.Johnson, G.Ferrotte, B.Favre) while attempting to put together a long term solution. The two drafts (Jackson & Booty) haven’t panned out, YET. Now Booty is off the table and Jackson is getting one more shot, but I’d still feel more comfortable if we brought in somebody new from the draft, as Jackson just doesn’t appear to be on the verge of Championship quality.

I believe Ben did in fact rape that woman. I would not want him on our team!

I wouldn’t want Ben either. He is good, but holds onto the ball way to long, and i don’t want a rappist either. I really don’t like it when the vikes draft QBs and with the top QBs in this draft there are concerns with each. injurys and systems that they played in. Jimmy clausen has played in a pro style offense which is good and maybe the most accurate in the draft, but has had injurys with his foot which is a big deal. Bradford and mccoy were more spread offenses like you normally see in college football. McCoy atleast has 2 seasons of taking the ball from under center, but was moved to shotgun because he is 6’2″. McCoy will have a very difficult time in the league with his shorter stature. I know Brees is only 6ft even but McCoy isn’t brees and no where near as accurate. Bradford isn’t an option because the rams will get him. Mccoy and clausen will both be taken by the middle of the 2nd. tebow and Pike are most likely mid 2nd to any spot in the 3rd. we need to draft DBs and O-line before a QB. If any of them(tebow, pike, Lefavour) fall to our 4th pick then yeah take them, but we shouldn’t hold our breathe.

I do not want Big Ben. Pittsburg wants to get rid of him because he does not respect his leadership position, does not respect the fans, must have some drinking problem, and repeatedly is violent towards women. NOT what a cohesive lockeroom needs. I’m interested in seeing what the two we have can do after a couple years with Favre working with them. Rosenfels has been listening to Favre pick apart all those sideline pictures. Wonder what he could do now?

purple my facts are straight the 4 reg. season losses we gave up 27,30,26 and 36 points. Then in the NFC championship game we gave up 31 points. I never said the D gave up all the points but if it was better who knows how far we could go.

    Round 1: Taylor Mays
Round 2: Find a way to get Colt McCoy

fmfan, you said 20 points a game. not per game that we lost. our ppg avg was 19.875 for the season and allowed 5 tds between TOs and special teams

  17. By fmfan on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

I didn’t say avg. ppg I said less than 20 points a game. Last year we only had 3 games that we had less than 20 points..

  18. By fmfan on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

Last year we only had 3 game that we SCORED less than 20 points.. (that would be a 13-3 record)

All I can say is TIM TEBOW has everything we need enough said

fmfan is right, our pass D sucked, teams threw at will against us. improve the secondary!

I would like to see the Vikings draft Tim Tebow. I expect him to be awsome at the next leval

  22. By R.P.1333 on Apr 18, 2010 | Reply

that was 19.875 ppg avg that our D allowed, not that we scored. I agree that our secondary needs to be fixed very fast. we allowed 26 TDs through the air last year and only 5 on the ground.

the only Qb ? viking fans have is will Favre play this year or will he retire for the 3rd straight year.

Draft Tim Tebow, allow Brett Farve to groom him for a year. Can you imagine Tebow, Harvin, and A.P. on the field at the same time who you gonna tackle?
