Report: Vikings To Visit With DE Montgomery

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 29, 2010 – 8:49 am

The Vikings have one defensive lineman from Texas A&M already on the roster – DT Pat Williams – and according to Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune they will be visiting with another.

Former Packers DE Mike Montgomery, according to Zulgad, will be visiting with the Vikings on Monday. Montgomery was a 6th round pick of the Packers in 2005 and even signed a 2-year contract extension last year, but he didn’t fit well in Green Bay’s new 3-4 scheme and the club released him earlier this month.

Montgomery stands at 6-5, 282 pounds and had his best season in 2008 when he had 2.5 sacks and 59 tackles in 14 games. Zulgad says in his report that Montgomery would compete for backup roles at both end spots along the Vikings line and he could also be moved inside on passing downs.

Visiting with Montgomery is fine, but how about
finding some quality offensive linemen as well.!
The protection of the QB has been awful.!
Favre got beat half to death in that game
against the Saints, as well as numerous
    other games this past season.

Howie, you are so right! We need to protect Brett, or why would he come back…… get killed? Brett is our magic to win each game plus the Suoer Bowl. He can’t win or play if he is on his back. Protect your main player! We want Brett back! He is awesome!

Do the Vikings realize that the Colts have had one of the Top Five O-lines for the last several years? Do they realize the Colt’s O-line was nominated for the Number #1 O-line last year? Do they realize that Manning would not have has great as numbers as he has had the few years if not for having the BEST O-LINE IN THE BUSINESS? Are the Vikings willing to take their mediocre O-line and improve it? Are the Vikings willing to protect their QB no matter who it is? Are the Vikings wanting to win even more games with a top rate O-line?

exactly Bruce, they already have the best front 4 in the league. THEY NEED O-LINE. steve hutchinson is the best in the league but that is not enough they need more. i say (just my opinion) they look for a saftey in free agency and draft an o-lineman in the first round and a corner in the 2nd or 3rd.

Bring Matt Birk back. He’s one of the best centers playing. He has been with the Vikings several times and has always been a dependable center.

Don’t know if Shawn Andrews is ready to play football again or for that matter if some team has already signed him, if not I think he could fill a need at RG for us allowing the #1 pick to be used on a CB. Hopefully via the draft this year somehow we come out of it with a couple of starting O-line guys, the run blocking was horrible and for that matter the pass blocking wasn’t good either. All to often we saw Peterson being hit in the backfield as he was receiving the hand-off or being stuffed at the line of scrimmage with out a sliver of day light to wiggle threw! The O-linemen need to step up their game this year.

Bruce, jbork88 and 4erversteve you guys are right on the money! What about Kevin Mawae? UFA that paved the way for CJ’s 2,000 yards. Remember that when AD rushed for 1,760 in his 2nd year this team had Matt Birk at center. Now that he’s with the Ravens he paved the way for Ray Rice. Also the Jets with Nick Mangold have a great run game. We want a better run support/pass protecting O-Line and Favre to get hit less? You can’t do it without a veteran center. Kevin Mawae is the man. The time is now for the Vikings to win and you can’t go around drafting young players if you want to seize the moment and the Lombardi trophy. Oh and AD can be an “All Downs” back, we didn’t choose his talent at #7 overall for nothing.
