Saints Rematch Possible For Season Opener

Posted by cjsiewert on March 20, 2010 – 7:48 am

The Vikings might have an opportunity to begin their 2010 season and push for Super Bowl XLV in the very same place and against the very same team that ended their 2009 season.

NFL Owners’ Meetings begin this Sunday in Orlando, Florida and it’s expected the NFL will unveil its plans for the season-opening Thursday night (September 9) game, which typically pits the defending Super Bowl champions against a compelling opponent.

There has been speculation for over a month that the Vikings and Saints would meet on September 9 and the Star Tribune’s Chip Scoggins mentioned the possibility again on Friday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter also tweeted on the matter, stating : “It would be an enormous upset if the NFL’s season-opening Thursday night game on Sept. 9 were not Minnesota at Saints.”

We’ll have more information on this and other topics covered at the NFL Owners’ Meetings, so be sure to stay tuned to vikings.com.

In my own opinion, the vikings were the better team and yet lost to a coin toss. it was very clear to me the saints should give the trophy to the coin or better yet the vikings. Its a shame it came down to the refs not making a call that could’ve caused serious injury to Bret Favre. And one that should not have been called at all in the end that set up field goal position and caused a loss for the Vikings. Granted there was an interception ,but, if your a saints fan you’re lovin it now until it happens to you! Hopefully nobody gets seriously hurt and a flag will be thrown next time, right? Also, every one that knows football knows if the Vikings got the ball in OT they would’ve scored more than just a few yards and a fieldgoal! Take it with a grain of salt! I did. In my own opion.

If the Saints are so good and the Superbowl Champs then why aren’t the owners making them prove it by having them play AWAY instead of HOME?

I agree on the late hits Favre was taking the entire game! Brett was single handidly moving that offense up and down the field. The blame i think was the flag for 12 men in the huddle in which Tahi was the goat, but Peterson on several plays was lined up in the wrong spot causing a rushed snap and for Favre to take his eyes off coverages. Obviously the front office doesnt think the open market for freeagents will be an upgrade and are just trying to ink their own back to new deals. The secondary needs attention cause they get toasted regularly game in and game out. This new kickoff specialist sounds great to actually pin a team back inside their 30 just once. Albert Young had over 3,000 yds in college without dropping the rock so go with him please these on the other side of 30 guys carrying it for what they want cash wise forget it! Favre will be back and he will do the training gig and all that comes with it! YOU ARE THE MAN BRETT ON THE REAL AND PUT IT TO THE PACKERS! MY LATE FATHER WAS IN THE SKY DANCING THE ENTIRE SEASON AND HOW BAD ASS YOU LOOKED DOING 360s running the show!!!!

Bah. I refuse to let last season turn into another 98 … and have it take 8 years for me to get over. We made mistakes, we put the game in the hands of the ref on the road, and we lost. Maybe we can get a new 3rd down back, some secondary help, and go from there.

your right steve there will be a flag thrown now though because it will be the vikings hitting drew. i hope the vikings defense does get revenge because the saints had to get cheap to get the sb win.

this will be like the season openr in 99′ when the vikings beat the falcons after they lost the them in the nfc championship the previous year

Nothing else to add, you nailed it Steve! Just hope the Vikes pummel the Saints in a first game rematch! Show everyone who should have been SB champs!

  9. By FilipCZ on Mar 20, 2010 | Reply

Truth is the Vikings were the better team – they pushed forward even with the fumbles and outplayed the Saints – but on the other hand the Saints sqeezed out the maximum from the relative minimum they produced. If there wasn’t for the mistakes the Vikes would have prevailed… but it was a great game of football…

Heck no, keep T.O. away from Minneapolis at all costs. That dude sucks and is a terrible locker room influence. Add to that that he’s 36 now and is about four years past his prime. We don’t need a showoff like that wearing purple. Marshall, now that dude is awesome, but we don’t need him. We got a better receiver in Sidney. And the next person who says that they should move Percy to the RB position needs to have their head examined, because why ruin a good thing with moving him around like that? How many clutch 3rd down catches did Harvin pull in this year? Having him line up outside or in the slot puts him in a perfect position to do his worst to opposing defenses. He needs to get into the open field, not dancing around a bunch of linemen.

  15. By purple08 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

LORD FARVE was to blame on the AP fumble inside the 10 and cost us the game with his INT. Just retire and let us move on.

  16. By Purple Heart on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

However, purple08, we wouldn’t have made it to the NFC Championship game without him. I hope he comes back for some redemption. That loss will still be fresh in the Vikes’ minds come Sep. 9. LOOKOUT!

  17. By GW on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

TO in the locker room would be reminiscent of Randy Moss and Culpepper. All great players with disruptive attitudes. Although New Englands coaches have done a great job with Moss. McNabe is a good example of what can happen to a players attitude with TO in the room. TO is done. He needs to join his big mouth buddy Keyshawn in the box.

The official NFL season opener has to be in New Orleans. The Super Champs always host the season opener.

AT NEW ORLEANS………………..SO AGAIN, THE NFL HELPS THE SAINTS……AM I THE ONLY PERSON HERE THAT IS NOT THAT EXCITED ABOUT STARTING OUR SEASON PLAYING IN THE BAYOU???!!! A LOSS THERE….1ST GAME……..AND THEN IT STARTS TO TURN INTO, “THEY HAVE OUR NUMBER” TYPE THING! WOULD LOVE FOR THE GAME TO BE IN OUR HOUSE! AM I THE ONLY PERSON…..?

  20. By travish88 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

of course I would love to watch them in our dome but thats just the way its been for the last 8 years. You think they should change the tradition just because we lost to them?

  21. By CajunViking on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

Yes Oldschool the NFL is continuing to help the Saints, they helped them win the SB so why not this too. They helped them win in order to “help” the people of New Orleans recover from Katrina. Note to the NFL: It has been about 5 years since Katrina came through, the people who didn’t have jobs then still don’t have jobs…. because they don’t WANT to work. I realize this is frustrating to everyone in MN and around the country, but believe me it’s really hard to be a Viking fan who is a life-long LA resident. GO VIKES!!!

  22. By Walter on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

According to Favre on Leno that bungled play at the end of the game against the Saints was due to him being too banged up to run. He played great up until then but was due for a mistake. Thats what happens when Iron man (grampa) Favre is in the hard hitting NFL. Now he’ll be a year older I think it’s time for his retirement. Come on people do you really think we’ll make it to the superbowl with a 41 yr old QB and a back that can’t hold onto the ball after 3yrs??

  23. By rap99 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

WALTER &08, ok what do you propose we do for a QB, favre had a great season, and we do not make it to the championship game w/o him. PLEASE don’t say something stupid like TJ should be the QB

  24. By fmfan on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

rap99 if they won’t I will. In 08 with TJ and Gus we won the north and we went to the playoffs. Last year every Favre lover said he would get us our ring but what happened we didn’t even make it to the big dance.

adding insult to injury the williams wall will be benched for the first four games so we wont get any redemption

  27. By rap99 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

FMFAN, and we lost a home playoff game with TJ. Gus got us to the playoffs, not TJ. Without favre we will not be contenders.

  28. By jimt on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

walt if we had home field yes it was ours the loss to the bears hurt in a big way the steeler game was ours also and blew it thanks chester.

  29. By fmfan on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

in the last 4 games of 08 TJ had 8 tds, 1 int, and a passer rating around 117. The Vikings went 3-1 in those 4 games so yes TJ help get us to the playoffs..

  30. By fmfan on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

jimt it was not all chesters fault in that game. I saw a high pass and then a fumble both by Favre and both taken back for TDs.

  31. By jbork88 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

we also beat the saints in 08 in the superdome. they can do it again

  32. By afh on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

purple 08, have you not noticed that without favre all the recivers are pretty useless and seeing how ap has some trouble holding onto the ball we’re in for a long season if favre dosen’t come back or if we don’t get a decent quarterback.

  33. By Robin S. on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

It is too bad that the game cannot be played in Minnesota. Brett and our team are definitely the better team but we need to be home where we get the right calls from the refs. Our players need to learn how to hold on to the ball where the siants can’t knock it out and we need to protect Brett. As much as Brett was wrongly almost killed, he had us tied at the end of the game. That is amazing! Brett and our team are great. Just please learn from that game and don’t let it happen again. Brett, please come back. You have a great team! We love you all! Thanks for a great year.

  34. By rap99 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

FMFAN, 3 of those teams had nothing to play for, put the pipe down, TJ is not a NFL QB! the vikes tendered him with a 3rd rd pick, and no team touched him.

  35. By rap99 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

FMFAN, and he sucked in the philly game! STOP WITH TJ, HE IS JOKE AS A QB!

  36. By jbork88 on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

rap88, saying a team had nothing to play for is the worst excuse ever. NO TEAM WANTS TO LOOSE. they played all their starters and gave it their best shot. all of them

  37. By OLDSCHOOL on Mar 21, 2010 | Reply

JIMT…..The williams Wall is suing the NFL……they already beat that drug deal. The NFL has already been ruled against in that way!

JBORK88, if your an athlete, you know you go out to give 100%, but if your playing for nothing, it’s not the same, no intensity!!!! it’s different. You know that.

  41. By Mr. Hiltner on Mar 22, 2010 | Reply

I just hope that Favre won’t have rusted up in the offseason again this year. It took a few games this last season for him to get polished back into his hall of fame style of play. Luckily we had an easy schedule early on for him to work out the kinks, but it sounds like that won’t be the case in 2010.

  42. By OLDSCHOOL on Mar 22, 2010 | Reply

T.J………………Come on man………that schedule is crazy…I said weeks ago, that if Favre doesn’t come back it’s because of the schedule! GONNA BE HARD NAVIGATING THAT THING…..LOOK AT IT AGAIN! THE ONLY GOOD THING IS 10 OUT OF 16 ARE INSIDE!

  43. By Isaac on Mar 22, 2010 | Reply

The vikings lost to the saints cause they fumbled 6 times, not because of any coin toss or bad calls by the refs, now i am a fan of the vikings and the refs did make a few bad calls but had the vikes not fumbled they should of had a 21 point lead in the 4th quarter.

  44. By meat2eat on Mar 22, 2010 | Reply

happy bday AP much love in MN Favre will be back, 3 reasons, he loves the VIKES and it gives him 2 more games to make the pack look foolish, sept 9th will b a win and 18 more and we will have our Trophy!

  45. By meat2eat on Mar 22, 2010 | Reply

isaac, yes vikes did lose that game themselves but if just one of those calls had went the right way nobody would be talking about playing in N.O. sept 9th because we would probably be playing the pack at home. and come on Hutchinson you always call TAILS!!! always!!!

  50. By meswant on Mar 23, 2010 | Reply

We do not need T.O., we have Rice, Berrian & Harvin. We have most of the goods, we just need AP to stop fumbling, get Young upto speed for 3rd down & get Favre back with some protection. We need the defence to step up & make the plays we all know they can make as we have seen them last season. We all need to stop dwelling on the past, yes we lost, yes they cheated, yes the refs helped the saints cheat, yes we would have won if we did not fumble, etc. We have most of the parts needed for this team to go the SB & win. Our guys just need to watch tapes & make plans to dominate every game. The games we played were we stuck to our game plans & everyone played their parts we won & won big. Keep it going!!

    Anyway, happy B-Day AP!!

Get a life. The Vikings couldn’t beat the Saints or the Colts. At best they were the third best team last year. At best. Stop crying and blaming the refs. You should be used of losing the big game after the last 44 years or so.

peterking, all joking aside…you are wrong and also an idiot if you don’t realise the Vikes were the best team last year.
