According to this report by Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune, Vikings OT Bryant McKinnie must forfeit the $22,500 game check that he would have received had he participated in this year’s Pro Bowl. Scoggins also reports that McKinnie must repay the league $4,285.13 in expenses.
Many of the reports circulating about McKinnie’s absence in the Pro Bowl stated that he had stayed out late on a few nights throughout the week prior to the game and documented these occurrences by tweeting about them. McKinnie missed 3 of the 4 practices and the team photo leading to his dismissal from the team.
In an interview with ESPN’s Kevin Seifert on February 4, McKinnie admitted that he had gone out on a few late-night adventures, but the reason for him not attending practice was due to him getting sick.
“Yes, I did go out,” McKinnie said. “I can go out and still get up the next morning. But my body started feeling a certain way.”
The league and the Competition Committee will review the situation to deter similar conduct in the future.
Despite the fact that McKinnie may have upset the league, teammates, and his fans, he did not break any laws and no charges were filed, which should ultimately put an end to the case.
