Vikings Dominate Cowboys 34-3, Advance To Championship Game

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 17, 2010 – 3:05 pm

The Vikings have advanced to the NFC Championship Game for a showdown against the top-seeded New Orleans Saints after defeating the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 34-3 at Mall of America Field on Sunday.

Next week’s conference championship game will be played at the Superdome in New Orleans at 5:40 CT.

QB Brett Favre and WR Sidney Rice torched the Cowboys secondary, connecting 3 times for TDs and pacing the 34-point offensive output. Favre was 15 of 24 for 234 yards and 4 TDs on the afternoon, a performance that generated a 134.4 passer rating. Rice had 6 receptions for 141 yards and the 3 scores.

The offensive display electrified the Mall of America Field crowd, but it was a dominant and punishing defensive performance that constantly whipped the 63,000+ fans into a frenzy that Dallas’ offense couldn’t overcome. The Cowboys had 6 more offensive snaps and held the time of possession advantage, but it the Vikings defense always came up with the big play at the perfect time.

Dallas QB Tony Romo was harassed all day and was sacked 6 times. He was efficient – completing 22 of 35 passes – but the production wasn’t there (just 198 yards and 0 TDs) and he was under pressure or sacked on most dropbacks. LB Ben Leber intercepted Romo once and both DE Jared Allen and Ray Edwards registered strip-sacks.

We’ll have complete and comprehensive postgame coverage all afternoon and into tonight right here on vikings.com. So, stay tuned to vikings.com and the vikings.com Blog for most postgame thoughts and reaction.

“HOW ‘BOUT THEM VIKINGS!!!”, Cowboys fans….Eat it, how does it taste?!…All week long all the Dallas fans came on here and said they were the best thing in the world, how they were better than us, how great their defense was, how physical their lines were…Well, guess what?, WRONG!!!….WE ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED UR ‘BOYZ IN EVERY FACET OF THE GAME…So, now, I ask you, AMERICA, Who was the better team, huh?….PLease, go back home where you belong…How did u like the butt-kicking we handed out today?…Taste good??….I thought #4 has never beat Dallas in the playoffs?, I thought he couldnt do it?….I thought the Vikings couldnt move the ball against the best defense ever created???….We were clearly ther better team, Dallas…..Happy off-season to ya’s

The Game next week is in Favre’s hands.

Like Jack Morris in Game #7 of the 1991 World Series… Jack Morris pushed himself to his physical and psychological limits and got the job done!

The oldest Superbowl winning quarterback was John Elway @ age 38.

    We’re pulling for you, Brett.

Listened to ESPN radio prior to the game, then caught the last 30 minutes of the pre-game show. No respect was shown the Vikings. All I heard on the radio was Cowboys this….Cowboys that! Hardly any commentary on the Vikings. I work with a blowhard Cowboy fan (typical type with mouth and no brains), and I put up with his diatribe all week long! I live in Arizona (hate the cardinals),and have been a Viking fan since I was 7 years old. Here is one question to you Cowboy fans….Who’s your daddy now?!!!

Good luck to the Vikings against New Orleans!

The defense and favre and rice were the difference…and were outstanding. I’m very concerned about petersons inability to get yards..and also frustrated by the offensive play calling that gives adrian the ball so many times up the middle that goes for nowhere. We have to be more creative to get him holes or in open space. I like taylor more than peterson as our feature back right now. Go vikes… one more for the big show!

Watching #4′s live Presser now as I type… fantastic team win. I must say I am not surprised at the Defensive performance, but you’d have to say the effort was a TOTAL game performance. The Favre to Rice plays were awesome too. I am sure there are a lot of unsung Vikings players who made the score what it was today. Nice Greenway plays too. I made comments elsewhere here predicting a difficult day for Romo in terms negative plays and getting sacked, but the each one was delicious to watch.

Congratulations to the team and enjoy this win Vikings Fans!

Let’s not get too greedy. Next week is a whole other story. We’ll be on the other side of the coin this time, as the visiting team to a higher ranked opponant inside their noise factory. Let’s be content with a hard fought battle resulting in another Vikings win and the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

  47. By Thor on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

Hopefully Sharper will have less impact against us than he has had against other opponents. We have played with him on our team for years, and Favre has been a teammate of his for a long time, and had to throw against him twice a year a few times as well. Hopefully that knowledge will benefit us enough to help make a difference in the result of the game.

Will – If I were you, I would check on the Saints sight as well as the NFL Ticket Exchange. I know that the MetroDome always reserves a share of their tickets to be sold the Week of the game, so that opposing fans can get a chance at seats. I would be surprised if this weren’t an NFL norm.

SaintFan. . .I also would love to see that match up as well. Regardless I just want to see a good football game next week. But I think the Saints Vs the Chargers would be a better game to watch because of all of the emotions and I know Brees would love to get revenge against his former team.

  67. By SaintsFan on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

DC….you kind of have to do that in the last game before the Championship game for the team. Sean Payton never does that, but he did in our game against the Cardinals to give that big lift going into the final game before the Super Bowl.

No one…except the Patriots, likes to rub salt in the wound, but you have to have that big win at this time.

Awesome win today. Just need to bring the “Thunder” (of the Defense) and the “Lightning” Strike (Of the Offense) to New Orleans. How? As the team comes onto the “Field of Battle” they chant “Thunder” & “Lightning” and the fans join in to show their support. Would be a big Psychological hit to the Saints and their fans. So bring the “THUNDER” & “LIGHTNING” THAT IS THOR’S HAMMER – THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS AND THEIR FANS – TO THE DOME !!!!!!

DC you’re an idiot. the football clock is for 15:00 minutes for 4 quarters. These players get paid to play every minute. Whether it’s a spike, run, pass, or kneel they should have defended the play. And I quote ” You don’t like it? Then stop it” You’re just disappointed because your team loss and that’s understanding but there was still time left on the clock.

Can anybody explain how throwing a TD rather than going for a FG when the game is already decided is “shwoing no class”? Since when does “class” mean that you have to play conservatively rather than try to give your fans something more to cheer for?

In some ways it is frightening to see the zombie like stare glazed about the faces of the Spinach and gold faithful in this part of Wisconsin. For us Western Wisconsin Vikings fans who cheered on the likes of Nate Allen, Joe Blahah, Joe Senser, Terry LeCount, and and Brent McClanahan it has been tremendously fun to live among them.

A pass into the endzone with a 24 point lead with less then 3:00 minutes to go (4 possessions) is rubbing in the face of the opponents. Why so you think Keith Brooking made a point to go over to the Packer bench and confront them on their lack of class?

Vikings pretty much had one of the easiest season schedules and when they play the saints farve will fold like Rosie Odonnels Lawn chair (rosie another vikings fan although she is one of the skinnier female ones;o) Any state that would elect Al Franken deserves to lose in the playoffs next year regular season……….

And newsflash anyone that would call themselves a former packer fan never was one………not a real one anyway.

GB2011 – Get a hobby, you have a long post-season ahead of you. How can a GB fan be attacking someone on a weight basis? Any idea what state boasts having the city with the fattest population in the world? Any idea what a combo of beer and cheese in your diet does for you? Go back to your Land of Make-believe and forget who your idol for 16 years was.

Thor instead of naming yourself for a false God from a human sacrificing group of infidel marauders. Hey know why Minnesota boys wont go out with a Minnesota girl once she has dated a Wisconsin boy? Ever see a gofer hole once a bagers been in it………hahahahaha

At least you did not slam on me for the Al Franken comment you must at least be embarassed by that………..

  99. By Thor on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

Are you kidding me? I can understand you not knowing how to spell Gopher, as I’ve never heard anything good about Wisconsin schooling. But not being able to spell the your own team name (it’s Badger by the way) just shows complete ignorance.

  100. By GB2011 on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

And newsflash Thor, the real vikings never had horns on their helmets……although they were somewhat like the present vikings though they were also”dehorns!” ;o) See ya next next season and your post season will be about two weeks longer than Greenbay’s this year but all is well……………And believe it or not I still like Farve although I love slamming on Vikings just as much as I like Farve. Although I would take Minnesota over the Chicago Bears or Dallas any time, but I will give the Saints their due perhaps it is their year.

  101. By Thor on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

Embarassed? Not even close. I don’t really care who is elected because none of them ever seem to do what they say they will and there’s no way to ever get them to do everything that you want. It’s a waste of time to pay attention to it, and far from the type of topic that should be discussed in here.

  102. By GB2011 on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

To quick on the typing typos are part of being human most democrats lack that. and I notice you still ignore the Franken comment……you must really be ashamed voting in a third rate comedian………..

GB2011 – Are you trying to teach me something? Do you really think that I didn’t know that REAL Vikings didn’t have horns? The myth that grew out of the history is more entertaining than taking things for their absolute truth in things like this. Did you know that box packers never walked around the office with cheese growing out of their hair???

  104. By GB2011 on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

Good luck Thor…..ya have got me laughing nice to see the Vikings have some fans I notice in offseasons the Packers still fill the stadium though……take care and I bet you love beer and cheese yourself…….;o)

  105. By Thor on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

Typos every now and then, yes human. What you are doing includes multiple mistakes in every sentence which equates to complete ignorance.

  106. By Thor on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

Why is that? Do Packer fans not realize that their team isn’t playing in Lambeau in the offseasons? Or do that many Packer fans just not have any where else to go?

  107. By CMH on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

I hope New Orleans lights up the Vikings. I don’t know about anyone else but Minnesota will just lose another Super Bowl if they go so they should just let New Orleans go instead.

Thanks Brett!!!! Thanks Vikings!!!!!! How incredibly entertaining. I was anxious and nervous all week as I anticipated today’s game. I’ve been a life time Packer fan, but I can thank TT and MM for opening my eyes to the VIKES. I have never been so entertained with FB as I have been this year. I am a huges Brett supporter and I will continue to be a Viking fan for years to come. The team has class, they have syngergy and they have heart. And yes, lots of bias for the Cowboys in the announcers and the analysts. Good Luck!!! Have fun all!!! That’s what it is all about………and Packer fans……get your head out of your butts……..how in the world do you move on without Brett………I still can’t believe they let Brett go. Unbelievable!!!!!!!

Brett was giving Shaunco??? a chance for a touchdown. It is PRO Football. Many teams did this in recent weeks. Look at the scores recently. Even the Packers did it to the Cardinals a couple of weeks ago. Stop crying. It has nothing to do with class or sportsmanship. The Vikings are a top-notch team with both attributes.

Like I said last week: You called down the thunder well now you got it. The cowboys are finished you understand me. You tell romo the Vikings are coming to play and he!!s coming with us. Well we came to win with authority and we did. Lets carry that thunder to new orleans and beat them. The football gods are looking down on the Vikings, so lets beat da saints and then we can go on to win the superbowl. Go Vikes!!!

It IS GREAT to see a few Green Bay fans rooting on Brett Favre, as Ive been doing since I heard OUR VIKINGS picked him up!!!! It WAS a great day 4 me as I told my eldest son, (Brett) he was taking us to the “Big Game”. And my dream just may come true… GO ALL VIKING PLAYERS…You ALL played GREAT, and the fans were absoulutly the loudest Ive heard in my 40 years of being a VIKING fan. It WAS A GREAT DAY 4 me. I can only pray that the Aints are as I see them…. Not 1/2 as talented as OUR Minnisota VIKINGS……Semper Fi, Do or Die. GO VIKES!!!!!

Vikings, baby, Vikings!! Team, you played a total game. We need to put together two more games like this. Outstanding game plan! Peterson got 26 carries; he didn’t bust any, but he kept the defense honest. Rice was out of this world. I stay in NW Louisiana and had to hear that garbage from the Cowboys fans all week. Now I have to listen to the Saints fans. I will repeat what I’ve been saying pretty much all year long. I think this will be a reversal of fortune from the 1998 season…a highly touted, offensively explosive #1 seed, playing a very good, yet under the radar #2 seed in the NFC championship game. I never thought that I’d see the day where the only team separating my Vikings from the Super Bowl was the New Orleans Saints!

FANTASTIC WIN – WAY TO GO VIKINGS!!! I am a life-long Giants fan but I love Brett Favre. Watching your team this season has been phenomenal!! This team is awesome!! You just put the icing on my cake by beating the Cowgirls – the most overrated, arrogant team in football. And as usual – have to be crybabies after they lose instead of acting like men!! Can’t wait till next Sunday – go kick some Louisiana ass – I know many fans of the NFC East (except for Cowgirl fans – LOL) are behind you all the way!!!!

Way to go keith brooking. Come on quit your crying! This is the NFL, play like it. If you don’t want the other team to score then stop them. We are not going to stop until somebody stops us. Way to go Vikings! This was a great TEAM win not one players win. Continue this kind of play and there is no team that will beat us. Go Vikes !!!

Moorevikes – I have said it before… the more I watch and listen to Favre speak, the more respect I gain for him. There is no question he is playing well and he has helped other players develop and gain confidence in themselves. However… Coach Childress is the one that has changed this teams identity… from an undisciplined organization with a losing culture; to a respectable, well run machine that has increased it’s productivity every season since his arrival. Dennis Green had 10 yrs, Mike Tice had 5 yrs.(Disgrace) Then Chilly signs Brett Favre. #4 brought with him a winning personality and positive mindset that is contagious and has been missing in the Vikings locker room for decades. I used to only worry about how the Vikes were going to blo w a lead… now I always feel like we have a chance when we are behind and I am confident when we are ahead. All season long I have listened to people Sh i t ting on Coach Childress. When T-Jack didn’t work out they blamed Chilly. Conservative playcalling…they blamed Chilly. Well, Childress is the one who went out and got your beloved Brett Favre and look at us now. After the losses to Carolina, Chicago and Arizona, I heard several fans here dump all over this team and coach Childress, but everyone still loved Brett. Nothing has ever been Favre’s fault. I like to give Favre a hard time simply because I think all of his worshippers are idiots the way they coddle him as if he was their first born. Quite frankly, I am more impressed with him everytime I hear him in an interview. He is a good role model for the most part and good for sports in general. The positive impact he has had on the Vikes future in Minny is enormous and I hope he plays another season for us. I don’t know Favre personally but neither do any of his admirers that act as if he is the second coming of chri st. He is a football player, nothing more… but I still hope he will bring us to the promised land nonetheless. I simply cannot devote my affection to a guy who played for the Packers for so many years and comes on board for 1 season, maybe 2. I will cheer for him to help us win but I wish we could do it with someone else. If we win the Superbowl, I will be a very happy man but, there will be an asterix forever in my heart reminding me that we did it with a rental QB, and a long time hated rival. But, let’s not forget who saved this franchise in the first place, Zygi Wilf and coach of the year Brad Childress. Thanks to both of you guys and good luck in the future, with or without Lord Brett Favre.

    HOW SWEET IT IS!!!
Anybody else smell burning cowboy?? Wow what an a** whippin. Whose turn is it to change Keith Brooking’s diaper? OH man watching Romo acting like a spastic ballerina all day was beautiful. He had no place to hide. Man i just wanna savor this right now. For the guy above who asked what the green sticker on Favre’s helmet is…thats to denote that he has speakers in his helmet to recieve calls from the sideline coaching staff…Ben Lieber wears it on the defensive side. Lets all enjoy this until we set out sights on N’Orleans. GO VIKINGS!!!

Said I wasn’t comming back on this blog till next year. Just wanted to say thanks D for playing the best game of the year and the year low 3 points they gave up. Played like champions. They played like they were built up to be all year. Don’t give it up and don’t let it go to your heads. Now I gotta read Saints stuff on this site. Joy. Well ya got what you wanted , the fantasy game that couldn’t be during the year. If they played like they did today, look out. BTW, was watching the game with a cowboy fan, lol, took a lot to keep a straight face.

Great comments…There’s nothing more that I can add that someone hasnt already said…I just want to congratulate our guys and also the NO Saints. Let’s not be like the Cowboys fans and start trashing the Saints. Karma always comes back in the end….This is going to be a bittersweet game for me, as my brother is a life-long Saints fan, going back to the days of the Dome Patrol, and earlier. We are very close, and, it’s going to mess with my nerves all week. I wish we were playing another team, b/c one of us is going to be heart-broken. They are a dynamic team like us, the only diff. is they are at home, and we havent won a game on the road since Nov. 1 and havent won won an NFC champ. game on the road since 1973…..I just hope we are mentally ready to handle their noise, I hope it’s nothing like 2001 in NY….Been a great year, but we’re not done yet….Let’s do this!!!

I’m a viking fan living in the big easy and the saints fans are already talking about going to the superbowl. Play the game you played agianst the cowboys and I know we will win. It will take “thunder and plunder”, running the ball and picking up the blitz to win.

    Let’s go Vikings.

  126. By jimbo92107 on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

I predicted two weeks ago that the biggest single factor in the NFL playoffs would be the extra week off for the Minnesota Vikings. It allowed a lot of key players to heal up nagging injuries, especially on the offensive line.

Now, going into New Orleans next weekend, the Vikings are playing at the highest level of the season. Especially encouraging was the play of Jimmy Kennedy, who is starting to look like another Kevin Williams, and Benny Sapp, who did a perfect Winfield tackle on Marion Barber.

If Ray Edwards isn’t too badly injured (knee), then the Vikings have a good chance to put a lot of pressure on Drew Brees, just as they did today with Romo. Brees will be a tougher test, because he moves around the pocket better than any other QB in the league.

Great team play today, and that’s exactly what it will take to beat the Saints. Skol!

I cant believe i am actually saying this but good luck vikings at your chance of reaching the superbowl next week. I have always been a packers fan as well much as i am a brett favre fan. No fan has any clue what its like to have your favorite player treated like brett was in green bay but obviously it worked well for all 4 parties that were involved.

Hopefully we will get some coverage on UK TV next week, if not I guess I will have to listen to it on the Viking website again. The Saint won’t go marching on.

Spit my coffee out laughing this morning when I heard the Cowboys crying about the last touchdown. Too funny. Thanks Brett. Thanks Shainoco. The underdogs handed the almighty “America’s Team” a butt kicking. Maybe the analysts and announcers won’t be so biased and won’t look so silly next week. Brett fans and Viking fans have had to have thick skin throughout this season. Also, a thank you to Steve Mariuchi and the like for the constant support in such a nay sayer enviroment. Terry Bradshaw should learn to stop throughing Brett under the bus every chance he gets. You’ve never walked in Brett’s shoes – even though you think you have.

  133. By Douglas on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

In all respect Dallas you haven’t won a ring in how many years? You haven’t won during the Romo era. The last time you guys won a ring was in 1995. Before that 1992, 1993, 1977, and 1971. That’s a great accomplishment for your city but that was ages ago. Win one in this decade until then stop talking about all the rings you’ve accomplished when all of it is irrelevant at this age in time.

i was talkin cowboy trash but now now want to congrat vikes-total domination-loud crowd-wow–better team won -i knew as reg season ended not to get to high on this team because it would end in dissapointment.my advice to vikes fans is enjoy the ride-and maybe you will win your first superbowl, you have the team for it-but keep in mind you may lose and the higher your up the harder it is to come back down.look at chargers most people thought this was their year.when a team doesnt win the superbowl they join the other 31 teams not being a champion.as good as this win tastes a loss tastes pretty bad.yeah eagles 3 wins are nice to look back on but whats it really matter if you dont get the ring.thats why you nee superbwl victory to make it all matter.
