Pat Williams, Brooking Have Different Views On Late-Game Play Calling

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on January 17, 2010 – 8:48 pm

It seems as though Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking had a little issue with Minnesota’s late-game play calling during today’s 34-3 drubbing of his team.

Courtesy of ESPN.com’s NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert, Brooking thought it was “classless” that the Vikings threw a pair of passes to the end zone late in today’s game.  As ProFootballTalk.com pointed out, Brooking and his teammates are paid to stop other teams from scoring.  Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams agreed.

“We don’t care what Keith Brooking says,” Williams told Seifert.  “He was about to get his ass whupped on our sideline over there.  It don’t matter.  Nobody said anything when they blew out the Eagles [the past two weeks].

“It’s the playoffs.  It ain’t no regular-season game.  If you lose, you go home.  We take no pity on them.  Do they expect us to?  I don’t care about no Brooking.  He can say whatever he wants to say.”

Brad Childress and Brett Favre also touched on the issue during their postgame press conferences.

How ironic, it was Brookings leading the cheer before the game, stomp them, stomp them, stomp them into the ground, while they were all stromping the ground, almost poetic.

That wasn’t running up the score at all! You have to look at the Patriots or Colts for that junk. That was them just running a play to see if it would work and what better time to take a risk! This team has NEVER ran up the score! Brett Favre in 20 years has NEVER ran up the score! And Brad Childress is actually the opposite! He is one of the most conservative coaches in the league! I was upset with them at the end of the half when they had 2 minutes on the clock and all 3 time outs and they just tried running the clock out! If that had been the Colts or Patriots they would have tried to make the score 24-3 so quit your whining Brooking and accept the loss with some grace!

This is the karma that cowboy nation has created for itself by never owning up to the fact that they cheated in the divisional playoff in 1975. If pearson and cowboy nation had just admitted that they got away with offensive pass interference, I’d say they had a leg to stand on. But they never did, SO THEY GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED after 34 years and 20 days.

    tyler,
i can’t believe that people are wining about the vikings scoring the last touchdown. This is professional football, not little league. And on top of that, it is the playoffs. The Vikings have been a class act all year. Football is a competitive sport and you shouldn’t ever let up. Especially at this level of play. And maybe you should go back and check your grammar. “I thought THEM guys went to college.” Where did you go? Furthermore, it kills me the way people start dissing a team about “losing a championship” when their team can’t even manage to get to one. Win or lose, the Vikings will be playing in LA next week. Where will you and your cowboys be?

I get it now….the reason Dallas lost today is because of karma. They ran the score up on Philly so they got their as$#$ kick today by the Vikings. The problem is that karma is going to be REEEAAAALLLLY confused next week because it seems to me the Saints 45 – 14 victory over the Cardinals was by the same 31 point margin as the Vikings 34 – 3 victory over the Cowgirls. Tyler.. Win a ring and then talk? This is a blog for fans. If you want to flap your mouth, go get taped up run out on the field, bro man dude. This wouldn’t even be a story if Kieth brooking hadn’t said anything to the Vikings sideline. What about Brady and the Pats blowing out the titans 59-7 earlier this season? Where’s the outcry? Where’s the bleeding hearts trying to protect the feelings of grown men in that game? If the tables were turned and Dallas threw to the endzone on 4th and 3 to go up 34-3 on Minnesota, everyone would be talking about amazing the Dallas offense is and how mature Tony romo is to put that many points up on the Vikings defense at home, but favre does it and linebackers start lobbying for a mercy rule in professional football. Maybe brooking should call his dad and have him talk to Wade and Jerry about why they let his son’s ego get bruised so badly. Go back to Texas and suck your effing binky with Jerry jones. The Vikings don’t owe the cowboys, or any team, anything. The cowboys lost in every phase of the game and they need to own up to that. Go ask the Dallas fans for mercy..they’re the ones who’ve been disrespected.

Leave no doubt. That was what the Vikings did today. They left no doubt in the eyes of Dallas, and they sent a message to the Saints. It fired up the team for next week.

If Dallas would have done their job out there and stopped the Vikings – well, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Kept Romo out of the endzone all day. Played hard til the end.

If Dallas’ defense had the chance at the end, they would have tried to hurt Favre out of spite, even though the game was already in hand.

What goes around comes around, and Dallas got theirs today. So did Aikman & Joe Buck, for that matter. Notice how quiet they got??

Listen, Am I crazy about what we did?…No, I’m not. We could have run the ball. But, ur subjecting our RB to a senseless hit in a meaningless game at the time. Here’s one for ya’ll Cowboys fans: Let’s go back to Super Bowl XXVII (that’s 27), against Buffalo…I believe the final score was 52-17. So ur telling me that there wasnt 1 instance of the Cowboys not running up the score?…Here’s another one, a little different situation, but, let’s look at it. Buffalo vs. Houston, 1993. Houston is up 35-3. They played conservative, Buffalo mounts the biggest comeback in NFL history. Had the Oilers been doing what they had been earlier, then maybe Frank Reich becomes an irrelevant name in NFL lore. Bottom line is this, “You play to win the game, Hel-lo?!”….It’s all about execution. And maybe we wouldnt have done that if ur fans would have shut their mouths. U dont think that played a part in it?…Even Coach Childress stated that in the post-game interview. Was it running up the score in SB 29 when the 49ers scored 49 points and Steve Young threw 6 TD pas-ses?….NO….Accept the loss and move on

To all those Cowboys fans who are talking about the Vikings getting beat by the Saints next week, I say this: Last week you were bragging that you would steamroll us yet your attitude seems to be different tonight. Stop trying to live vicariously through the Saints just because you couldn’t live up to your threats and actually show up to the game. Concede the loss, put your head in a paper bag over having that infant Brooking as part of your organization and look to next year. Have some class yourselves even if your players don’t.

    (1) The sport is called Football, play to win until regulation time has expired.

    (2) How many times in sports have their been Improbable and Miraculous comebacks? True it was unlikely the Cowboys would have changed the final outcome, but never impossible.

    (3) This is live preparation, real world Red Zone time and not practice. Which makes it the BEST practice! In other words, you have to have a mentality of making plays to be your best and playing to get your red zone skills virtually effortless on offense.

    (4) That TV in Arlington, TX is pretty big – Bigger than their teams talent in 2009-2010 I’m afraid.

UK Vikings fan here. Having never been to a game in my life but having followed the Vikes since my schooldays (too long ago to remember!), my view from a distance is probably a bit more impartial. The Vikings were the better team. Period. After the initial couple of drives where Dallas looked capable of hurting Minnesota, it all went a bit stale for them. The Vikes defence took the game by the scruff of the neck and gave Brett and the offence the time and space to make the plays that mattered.

All in all, it smacks of sour grapes from Brooking – his team were second best on the day. It’s as simple as that.

I LOVE OUR VIKINGS!!! My first game was @ the dome, my Mom & Dad bought me a Tommy Kramer jersey and I had a blast!!!!

Our VIKINGS have always shown sportsmanship and been gracious losers, I am proud to be a VIKINGS fan!!! Dallas has always been arrogant, lacking class, whiny, and a bunch of sore losers!!! They were over-rated and thrived on all the blown up hype about themselves! How did that work for ya!

And to the Dallas fans…..grow up and get some class too! We have heard way too much from your big mouths lately and it’s time to go back home and cry in your super money stadium!!! Newsflash…in the NFL, you play 4 quarters, total of 60 minutes!!!

Win or lose, the VIKINGS are a classy organization! GO VIKINGS!!!! I LOVE YOU!!
ON TO NEW ORLEANS, YEAH BABY!!!!!! PURPLE POWER!!! Good luck Saints!

heff, the only thing that will come back to haunt anyone, are the heavy and swift footsteps of the Vikings Defense as it swarmed Romo time and time again. He will be haunted by the inability of his line to protect him. It will cause him to get of to a slow start in 2010-2011 I suspect.

Just play until the end. We should have lost to the ravens this year when we dominated the whole game then with six min. left in the game we were up 17 points and we couldn’t close out the game. We won that game because the ravens missed a 43 yard field goal with 3 seconds left. Play to the end. It wasn’t a statement or “for the fans.” It wasn’t to rub it in anyones face. Just simply Play tough till the end. It is in the same category of the great lesson ” Never give up.” PLAY TOUGH UNTIL THE END. Last point to ponder. Did Dallas let AP get more than 3 YARDS at the end…..NO. They were still playing. Well I’m sure glad I could help you with a lesson for your daughter.

All you non-vike fans keep on being that way. Get a ring,Favre soap and blah, blah, blah! Just man up and bow out cause it’s 2010 and not the past. If you want to live back then remember Lance Rentzel(arrested 4 child molesting) and other things we can forget from others. Vikes are headed to NO next week cause of talent and that’s good enough for me to be happy with. Why don’t all of you just be fans of good football games and enjoy it or turn off the TV!!!

  93. By Dave on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

The Vikes played a great game but why even take the chance of giving the Saints bulletin board material-considering the class the Saints have shown in the recovery of New Orleans? The victory was well in hand and there was no need to do what they did. These short-term gains or jubilations are not worth the long-term effects(motivation for the Saints, a mission by the Cowboys to seek retribution next year.) Please don’t tell me the Vikes could not be more aware here and scoring is some unstoppable goal in this situation. The Vikes have great talent but I really think Childress is their worst enemy on their continued success.

This just in… Vikings play for the Vikings fans… Not for the Cowboys or the Cowboy fans. Vikings fans had more cheers for their money. With all the crying about pulling the starters and resting them in recent days, this is he same thing. Cryboys wanted the Vikings to pull the excitement, and have the Vikings take a knew for the last 8 minites? NO way! I have only the highlights, since I had to work. The Vikings have come back and won with 2 seconds left. Cowboys can go vertical, if anything, playing the whole game lends respect to the opposition and honors the money, time and effort the fans invested to enjoy the game.
Some of the whineboys posts here just spell, “sore looserman.” BTW before the merger, the Vikings won the NFL championship, so you blokes are even wrong about that. They were divisional and NFC champions many times and have not been the dirty players in memory. God Bless all the greats who wore horns, and left many great memories. And yes Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be Cowboys.

Listen up everybody. Football is one of the last bastions of a true man sport. Much respect for anyone who goes out on that field. It’s not a game for sissy
girly boys. I think the fans whining about that last touchdown have never played the game. It’s like a war out there. Running up the score??? PLEASE, this is football. Tell your kids this is what life really like. Football is a chess game played out in a physical violent manner. It’s poetry what the Vikes did to the Boys. It sucks to lose. Stop whining and acting like little girls when you lose and respect the game for what it is. The Vikes won gracefully and forcefully. Congrats Vikes and Vikes fans. Like Howey Long said, I think the Saints are getting real nervous right now.

I think it’s worth repeating again that if the Cowboys were upset about the number of points on the scoreboard, they should have done something about it! Just to remind you Cowboys fans…the way it works is that we try to score and you try to stop us…if you don’t try, that’s not our fault.

  100. By Bigfan on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

In the future some of the Cowboys fans need to work on being better losers, it is what it is. Romo seemed very humbled yesterday in interviews, it’s very plain to see that the media helped set them up for failure by making them overrated and overconfident. I was saying all week that they have never met the likes of the four Norsemen. What is really amazing is the Brooking’s hypocrisy of not wanting another score rubbed in his face when they would do the very same thing because it’s football, coach Childress to quote Lou Holt said it best. If Brooking can’t handle it maybe he should seek another profession and anger management. Go Vikes!!

  101. By PhillyJoe on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

My question to Childress and the organization is what if Favre tore an ACL on the last pass…..would it still have been worth it? Why were any starters in the game at that point? Stupid! and Classless!.

  102. By NDVikesFAn on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

Opinions are like a**holes-everyone has one. No one will agree on the last touchdown-good, bad, or indifferent. I was surprised we didn’t go after a pass downfield earlier in the drive, because the CowGirls were playing 9 in the box that entire drive-the time to go after a play downfield would have been on 2nd or 3rd down.
Maybe Brookings should not try to rub Berrian’s head into the ground, if he wants respect from his opponents. I had always respected him and his game until the end of the 3rd down play.

  103. By Karen on Jan 18, 2010 | Reply

I can’t believe the whining from the Cowboys and their fans over that last TD. If you want to win the game, play to win. There is more to a score than JUST winning the game. There is also the concept of psychology against your upcoming opponent to be considered, AND Favre has a chance to best another Montana record next game. I mean, what’s the deal? Are the Cowboys men or cry babies? They need to suck it up, move on, and work toward building a better team next year. It’s nice, however, to see that there are also many Dallas fans with class who are kind enough to wish the Vikings well next week. Thank you!

Everybody was picking Dallas and plain and simple the Vikings wanted it more. Romo and Whitten thought thier ship didn’t stink and went down hard. After every possesion the realize just how good the men in Purple are until they finally quit. They slapped the Cowboys right in the face and scored a touchdown late to leave no doubt!! Let all the analysts keep talking – let them all do what they did last week and say the Vikings don’t have a chance. It obviously fired them up and they stomped on the Cowgirls. Sometimes I think it is better to go in the underdog – it gives them a huge incentive to prove everybody wrong and sometimes it gives the other team confidence they shouldn’t have. It happened to my team – the Giants. All we heard through the playoffs was that we were going to lose, lose lose. And then when we got to the Superbowl we were told we were going to lose, lose, lose. We didn’t and all the players will tell you that the naysayers only fueled them on more. So Vikings fans, let them all talk up the Saints this week – it just may be the best thing to happen!!

Minnesota has been in the league for 49 years and has never had the privilege of having the Superbowl trophy in your house. It’s a shame because Minnesota always been associated with somewhat of class until some garbage Eagle coach and some rival QB came to town. I guess not having a Superbowl makes teams do things out ordinary. This worst part of classless scoring was the people you had commit on it after the fact. Pat Williams a prime example of a garbage human being said, “Nobody said anything when Dallas blew out Philly the past 2 games? “Really Pat you illiterate piece of $@$%! Check the box score son, the BOYS blew them out early and ran down the clock like a respectable team would. The coach called a pass play (not Brett) and what was Brett supposed to do in the middle of the play? not throw it in the endzone when Shianco was open b/c he felt bad scoring another TD? please.
