Sanford, Other Key Backups Will See Time On Sunday

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 15, 2010 – 3:05 pm

In Friday’s vikings.com Mailbag feature, a reader asked if S Jamarca Sanford would receive playing time this weekend over starting S Tyrell Johnson.

The answer I gave was that Johnson would continue to start for the Vikings but that the coaching staff would continue to use Sanford in spot duty. The rookie 7th round draft pick out of Ole Miss has played tremendously on special teams this year and he’s had some excellent moments while playing defense, too.

On Friday after practice, Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress affirmed that Sanford, and other key defensive backups, would indeed see playing time on Sunday against Dallas.

“We’ve got a good plan for that,” the Vikings head coach said. “I think rolling guys in and out, getting the most out of all of those guys, waiving as many guys as we can in throughout that whole defense.”

Cowboys will use hurry up to negate substitutions. Three and outs take care of that problem. HIT SOMEBODY, VIKINGS!!

Go VIKINGS ! And CARDS! Would love to see the Vikes destroy the Cowboys and have the Cards walk in here to get to the Superbowl!!!!!! MIAMI bound baby! SKOL VIKES!

The game against the Cowboys will be all about speed and good instincts. Vikings should play Sanford at SS and Kenny Onatalu at Mike. Both guys get to the right place fast and put on a good hit. Tyrell Johnson has shown himself to be mediocre in all departments, while Jasper Brinkley half the time just doesn’t look like he knows where he should be.

It’s time to put your best football players up the middle to stop Romo and all his tricks. Otherwise Witten will have a great day and Dallas will run their draws for a hundred yards.

Just need Childress to get open his mind a bit….
Favre to get protection from the Oline and his backs…..
AP to stop letting the ball out of his grasp……
Percy to have a HUGE game…….
And the D to slam Romo to the matt as often as possible….
Oh yeah….and how about wrapping a guy up when ya tackle for a change?

We should squeek a close WIN on Sunday…..

Like I have said all week cowboyfan01, WE are not the Eagles! Dallas beats up on the one trick pony Eagles and now they are world beaters! Love it, what the casual football fan out there was not told, by the media, about Ratlief is this…..he was coming up the middle on the Eagles the whole time because the Eagles lost the guy who snapped ever single ball for Mcchoke all year for those 2 games vs the Cowboys!!!! Now, because of that…..Ratlief…watch out for Ratlief….please! Eagles lost their center for those to games and replaced him with a guy….who during one play……if you really watched the games…snapped the ball to his own ass…and Mchoke had to fall on it! You Cowboy fans have really showed your lack of football knowledge this week!

  12. By OLD SCHOOL on Jan 16, 2010 | Reply

So , anyway….We will watch out for ratquiff, Tony, and who ever else you want us and our team to watch….as long as you Cowboy fans promise us this one thing…..You and your team watch us next week on the t.v. while we play in the NFC title game!!!!!!! and that my friend is a PROMISE!!!!!!!!!

is anyone else sick of cowboy fans at this point? i mean i don’t know who’s going to win. both teams have their strengths and either team could “show up”. what i do know is if the vikings win i’ll never have to see them again until we play them next year in the regular season. i suppose then we’ll have won by luck. that is how fans of opposing teams are so predictable. yes we know we have never won a championship but as far as i’m concerned if you didn’t win the year prior it doesn’t mean s@#t. i really don’t care what you did in the 90′s or 70′s last time i checked it was 2010 atleast viking fans look to the present and future of our franchise we do not live in the past. i bet most of these cowboy fans still wear their letterman jackets and talk about how they scored the winning touchdown in a meaningless game. that’s right now take off the jacket and sit back collect your thoughts and think about the life you waisted living in the past you tools. now to all the cowboy fans with real thought and points: good luck on sunday and enjoy the game it should be a classic.

The Vikes can kill the Cards or the Saints….both have zero d! ZERO!

Going to be a great game…It’s funny how AP idolized the Cowboys as a kid and Romo idolozed BF…makes it all the better. This is the true NFC Championship…because either way the Cowboys and Vikings are head and shoulders above the Saints or Cards. Cowboys 27, Vikings 17. Go Cowboys!

  16. By Kyle on Jan 16, 2010 | Reply

MooreVikes, maybe Cowboys fans reflect on our history so much because…we have history. I’m not trying to be rude…just saying. I’ve thought the Vikes were top-notch since yall got AP and Jared Allen. Yall just didn’t have a QB, but now that’s changed…so should be a fantastic game.

KYLE WAS FIRST COWBOY FAN WITH SOME RESPECT AND KNOWLEDGE! SKOL KYLE! AND YOUR RIGHT , IT’S GOING TO BE A BARN BURNER, AND EITHER ONE OF THESE TEAMS WILL KILL THE SAINTS…PERIOD! THIS IS THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP!

ive been reading polls, blogs, and watching videos all week and is it only the vikings fans that think we have a chance? I dont get it. I’ve been overseas all season and haven’t seen a single game, but log onto any site for any report and video i can get and it seems like a much more balanced matchup than its being portrayed as. Both teams have great front lines on both offense and defense. Both teams have capable quarterbacks and a running game that can created havok. Both teams have receivers that are capable of big plays, although in this department i believe that Minnesota has the advantage with more options that have seen the ball more frequently. I think Minnesota takes special teams and are fairly close in the secondary as well. Minnesota has rest, home field advantage, and a post season veteran quarterback. If Minnesota gets on the board early its all over. The crowd will become an issue and momentum and desire to get to the big game will carry through. The Saints dont stand a chance against either team and the winner of this game will be playing the chargers in the superbowl.

yeah yeah yeah the Dallas D is impressive. Yeah yeah yeah they are hot and on a winning streak. The thing is Minnesota has had almost 4 weeks to prepare a game plan to limit the effect of spencer and ware and 2 weeks to rest and focus. Ratliff is a great tackle, but lets see what he does lined up over a starter, and lets see what happens when a balanced offense presents itself. Its easy for a d-line to look good when all they have to do is bull rush because their is no run game. Its going to be a gut wrenching physical game and i for one wish i could be watching the game unable to eat because of the tension. This is going to be a historic battle. Minn wins 24 21

hey kyle every team whether bad or good has history but good point. i’m just tryin to get the point across that it doesn’t matter to me what a team did 2,5,10, or 50 years ago it has no reflection on what will take place on sunday. i know it is just to get under our skin. but to say the cowboys will win because favre has never beat the ‘boys in the playoff or because vikings choke makes no sense to me. only about 14 more hours kyle put your jersey on grab a beer and for all the viking nation put your horns on and lets get ready to make some noise. i can’t fracken wait any longer.

the vikes win/loss record is only what it is because of their cupcake schedule. minnesota hasn’t had to face a team this hot all year. i don’t know why everyone here is calling for a close game? cowboys will route the vikes just like all the other games so far this weekend. be afraid…be very afraid. sleep well tonight. :-)

  22. By cowboy4life on Jan 16, 2010 | Reply

    1) Dallas & Minnesota each yielded about 4 yds/carry, so I’m not sure how you can argue Minnesota’s run D is so much better. In fact, Minnesota ranked 2nd overall and Dallas 4th overall with a difference of 3.4 yards per GAME. On pass defense, Dallas ranked 13th overall, Minnesota 20th.
    2) Scoring defense (generally considered the most important defensive statistic) – Dallas ranked 2nd in the NFL, Minnesota 10th.
    3) Dallas averages 4.8 yds per carry; Minnesota 4.1 yards per carry; Dallas rushing offense is ranked 2nd, Minnesota’s is 22nd. Dallas averages 8.2 yards per pass attempt, Minnesota averages 8.0 per attempt. Dallas is ranked 4th in the NFL, Minnesota is ranked 7th.
    3) Strength of schedule – Dallas #11 hardest, Minnesota #31 (based on Dallas’ opponents record of 131-123-2 and Minnesota’s opponents record of 107-148-1). That pretty much kills your argument about who Dallas played vs. who Minnesota played.

Dallas’ M.O. is to use the best kick-off and punt teams in the NFL to pin their opponents deep, and then force them to drive the length of the field against the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL. That results in punts most of the time. You can draw your own conclusions, but Vikes fans ignore the FACTS.

    @ moorevikes

i understand your bitternees……i mean what have the Vikings done…oh i dont know……EVER!!!!!!! absolutely nothing! no rings, no relevance, and if it wasnt for your dorky coach begging Favre to play you wouldnt be relevant this year, i mean u never are right? dont get mad at the fact the Cowboys, even in this drought over the last 13 years, have always been relevant, always draw the biggest ratings, etc. Oh did i mention we have 5 SB rings to the Vikings 0? once we win, and we will, u guys can find another quarterback to lead u to victory. maybe Warren Moon or Dan Marino are available?

i can’t wait!! SKOL VIKINGS!!! im gonna raise my glass right before kick off to all you fellow vikings, its gonna be a battle and at the end we will have the victory!@% wooooo!

Realisticly: when the vikes were up by allot of points early in the season teams had to go to the pass to catch up. The stats of the vikes 2nd ranked defense is garbage. Not to mention it is almost impossible for a first year QB to come in and take a team the distance. You have to mold a team, it takes timing, trust and then more time….. and for the vikes/farve to play “rent a QB” and show up for camp in August is pitiful. It will all be exposed in about 14 hours.

‘moorevikes’: Well said about their fans. And, Kyle, ur reference to being a Cowboys fan as ‘we have history’….Dont get me started. We have plenty of history ourselves, we just dont have a championship, which, I know, is what it’s all about. But, we’ve been to 4 SB’s purselves, have had our share of success in the playoffs. We’re not the Lions here. We need 1 championship to truly validate our franchise as being a top-rate franchise.

  27. By letshearitvikings on Jan 16, 2010 | Reply

cowboy4life what are you talking about we ended last year better than you and we were using 2 different half ass quarterbacks…less than half ass in my opinion..so you saying we did nothing last year is stupid because we made it to the wild card and you and tony H@M@ did not.

  28. By Kyle on Jan 17, 2010 | Reply

I completely agree with yall that many fans do reference the past too much. I think here in dallas we have a very rich history that is nice to look back and reflect on (i’m sure most fans would too if the tables were turned). And do yall think we haven’t heard enough criticism about the PAST 13 years without a playoff win??? Man, that got so old…and then they started putting that on Tony Romo which is ridiculous. I think because our fans hear that negativity so much, most off-set it with looking at our history. I mainly look forward to the future though. I look forward to seeing just what our team is made of, and this is a great game to show it. I was at the Playoff game last week against the Eagles and believe me…just short of the Superbowl there is no better feeling than knocking the Eagles out of contention. I’m sure yall share the same feelings toward the Packers.
And also Jeremiah is right…very even matchup.
    Romo/Favre
    Barber,Jones/Peterson,Taylor
    Austin/Rice
    Roy?/Harvin
    Witten/Shianco
    Ware/Allen
    Ratliff/Williams’
    Jenkins,Newman/Winfield :)

If the Vikings don’t take a right guard in the first round and if clausen doesn’t fall to them, we need to try to trade up a few spots and get Taylor Mays. As much as i hate to say it we need safety help. our corners are such run stoppers we need someone flying around and trying to make plays.

WE CAN ONLY PRAY, but if all the gears on this Vikings machine are well-oiled and running properly, I don’t think we will have to pray too hard. SKOL VIKINGS!!!! LET’S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
