Cowboys Can Pressure From The Middle, Too

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 13, 2010 – 2:21 pm

One of the main subplots in this weekend’s Vikings-Cowboys Divisional Round playoff game on Sunday is the matchup between Dallas’ pair of outstanding edge rushers – LBs DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer – and the Vikings bookend OTs – Bryant McKinnie and Phil Loadholt.

And that matchup shouldn’t be ignored. Ware and Spencer combined this regular season for 17.0 sacks and they already have 3.0 in the playoffs. Although McKinnie has played well this season and earned his 1st Pro Bowl appearance, he did struggle against Panthers DE Julius Peppers last month and Loadholt will be making his 1st playoff start on Sunday.

Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress acknowledged on Wednesday while meeting with reporters that the Cowboys ability to pressure from the edge is something the Vikings will need to address.

But he also indicated he and his offensive staff will be mindful of Dallas’ ability to bring pressure from the middle of the defense, too.

“With that said, a guy like (Keith) Brooking – they feature him blitzing,” Childress explained. “He does a great job of timing up his A-gap blitzes. And then I look at the nose guard (Jay Ratliff) can bring pressure any way you want it. He can walk the center back, he can make a quick move and beat you with quickness in there, and then they wave people in and have some pretty good people they can bring in the game in their nickel situations.”

There’s no denying that Dallas possesses the talent and scheme to pressure QBs and disrupt offenses. They ranked 7th in the NFL in QB sacks with 42 and they also boast the league’s 4th-ranked rushing defense, a bad statistical combination for opposing offenses.

But there are ways the Vikings can try to deny the Cowboys attempt to bring that pressure. Childress mentioned several tactics, including chipping with RBs and TEs. More important than figuring out one form of effective protection, though, is being sure to use several different tactics to keep the Cowboys defense off-balance.

“You have to mix it,” Childress said, “because people are too good if you’re only showing one kind of protection…typically they’re going to break a protection down.”

Okay, so why has Dallas not run the table this year. All this talk makes them sound unbeatable. But wait a second they lost 5 out of 16 games this year. How?

Ron, It’s hard for a Vike to understand, but let me explain!
It’s not how many wins or loses during the season but how you finish the season! ex. Vikes last 4 games 1-3 —- Dallas 4-0 This Sunday Vikes 1- 4
Dallas 5-0 Simple math. Go Cowboys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell that to Green Bay and Philly. Both hot prior to a big loss. And why are only the last 4. Not 5 or 6.

I like how the media and everyone else bashes Favre for throwing costly intereceptions but I watched Tom brady throw 3 INT and 1 Fumble and no one said anything but “he’s just having a bad day because he’s coming off of an injury” But when Favre threw the interceptions due to a shoulder injury in his throwing arm when he was on the Jets the media teared him apart.

NOW we see Rodgers throw an INT on his first play and a Fumble on the last play to win the game but EVERY ONE is only talking about how great he is to lead his team to a come back.

Isn’t there something wrong with this picture?

why does everyone think we went 1-3 in our last 4 games i thought we went 2-2. granted not awesome but it’s not like we went 0-4. we do have momentum going into this game. we are rested, yet, according to the players fired up. it’s in our house and i believe no one has beat us there this year. give me one logical reason why you cowboy fans think this is going to be an easy win. seriously. no more we’re 4-0, no more PAST s@#t, no more favre is gonna choke. unless you can tell the future you don’t KNOW s@#t. i can tell you it’ll probably be a great game. i can also guess that the outcome will come down to coaching. whoever has the better coaching staff that day and can make adjustments.

we went 2-2 not 1-3 cant the cowboy fans count ..

Mark my words: the Cowboys will roll over the Vikings. The momentum is on the Cowboys side on offense, defense and special teams. Favre and Peterson are great players, but they are up against a defense whose weakest links could start on any NFL team. On the other side of the ball is a powerful and balanced attack that opposing teams have not been able to counter so far.

So why did the Cowboys lose 5 games this season? Because all these elements had to come together. I would much rather be the 12-5 Cowboys on a 4 game domination streak than the 13-3 Saints who mostly have questions.

I personally would be surprised if the Vikings are still in the game at halftime.

cowboys_fan. I’m not sure just what convinces you that the Cowboys “will roll over the Vikings” on Sunday. When I look at this game, the outcome could be a Dallas blow out, a Vikings blow out, or a very close game decided by a field goal. I’m taking the last option. Vikings by 3. QB’s are the difference.

Wasn’t Rodgers “hot” going into the Cardinals game? I think they ran into “an old man” that ended the hot streak.

Well, #4 has had a great run of it, all thuogh he is the most over rated pro player of all times, only 1 SB all the INT’s and on and on and on. I still hate to see him go out this way. I perdict he will not be leaving the field on he’s on power this week, pretty much gurentee it. Good job Brett but you should have stayed at home this year, oh well you made your choice and now your ganna pay for it. I’m not saying I won’t #4 to get hurt but after this beat down I don’t think he will be playing football anymore. As of the Viking Fans, you have never won anything and you never will. If you look at it, there are some teams that win it all, and there are somem teams that never will win. History shows the Vikings Will never win.

I think the Vikings are going to win 34-14, and be playing Arizona in the NFC Championship game, and we will be going to the SuperBowl in Miami.
