Vikings Discuss Facing Cowboys In Playoffs

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 10, 2010 – 4:23 pm

With their Wild Card round bye week over and with the Cowboys having defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, the Viking now know the identity of their opponent for next Sunday’s Divisional Round game at Mall of America Field.

The Vikings will host the Cowboys, one of the NFL’s hottest teams.

“Everybody’s back, we’ve got good energy here,” Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress said. ” It’s nice to have an opponent to be able to focus in on.  I mentioned to you that a lion’s share of our work last week was on the Cowboys, so it turned out to be appropriate work.”

The opponent the Vikings will be focusing on is one that has racked up 900 yards and 58 points over the past 2 weeks. Defensively, they’ve held the Eagles to just 14 total points in that same time span.

“A good, explosive football team on both sides of the football,” Childress said of the Cowboys. “They did a good job of taking the ball away, they did a good job of grinding it, being able to run it, and then they had their share of explosives as well.”

Childress wasn’t the only member of the Vikings who spoke to reporters about the upcoming playoff game against Dallas. Rookie WR Percy Harvin said the Vikings have some work to do now that the playoffs have begun and C John Sullivan spoke about  facing a productive and talented Dallas defensive front.

Also, Tom West of the Vikings public relations staff has chimed in with some historical stats regarding the Vikings and Cowboys and he also spoke with both RB Adrian Peterson and CB Antoine Winfield about next Sunday’s game.

The Dallas Cowboys are coming in smoking hot. Their number 1 focus as a Defense is to stop the run first and foremost, and then shut down the pass. To think of Brett Favre being made one dimensional should be a scary thought for Vikings fans, in paticularly with the Tenacious Beasts The Dallas Cowboys have pinning their ears back and bringing The Heat. That, coupled with Solid Secondary play and, not to mention, the way Tony Romo and their Offense has played and, well, it does not look promising for The Vikings. 27-20 Cowboys

well listening to the experts the the Packers weren’t going to lose today. Rodgers started with a turn over and ended with one. Now go Vikings beat the Cowboys. Romo is do for a meltdown. The Vikings are alot better on both sides of the ball than the Eagles.

All I can say is that I am so glad the Packers lost…Made my day!!!…Thank goodness they lost, now their fans cant talk any trash until next season, ah, that sounds good, doesnt it Vikings fans, “NEXT SEASON”….Happy off-season Packers!

I’m sure we will all hear about the great comeback by Rodgers. The truth be told, a comeback is only great if you WIN ! Warner is a class act and I hope he gets to face Favre in the NFC Championship. It would be great to see two great QBs at the end of their careers fight it out.

Listen, Brett Favre hasnt lost at home against dallas all time 2-0. i think personally favre, peterson, rice, harvin, jared allen, pat and kevin williams, c-taylor and ray edwards are due for a breakotut game and they will have their shot against “america’s team”. plus minnesota is a better all around team then phily. i see adrian peterson rushing for 190 yards on dallas. sorry cowboys fans vikes are just better than you and De MarcusWare will be shut down along with a-spencer

Our “A” game will beat thier’s .The Boys are playing well and have some outstanding talent. So do we. Philly did not have an AP or a CT, with Westbrook, hurting. And even though I think Mcnabb is good, Farve is a great QB. We can bring pressure without the blitz. The Giants torched the Dallas D, so can we. Have to tackle and hold on to the ball. Go Vikes!

  28. By al on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

The Cowboys lost their first game with the Giants in week two. The Vikings schedule was the 5th easiest in NFL history. Hate to break this to you but Dallas owns Brett Farve…. ask your Green Bay buddies…. or better yet look it up. I still think it is hilarious that Viking fans love Farve these days.

I am also a huge Dallas Cowboy’s fan! I really am hoping for a great game by the Boys, but I also have a lot of respect for Favre. He is a class act, and I think he was wronged by Green Bay. He has had a super career & I wish him the best of luck! The Boys will come out on top though! Go Cowboys!!

Our passing game as good as its ever been, we have the best (our one of the best) running backs in the game, and a silver fox of a quarter back who’s never been better. The only thing The Cowgirls are taking away from the Dome will be an injured pride.

ps. His name is Brett FAVRE not Farve. You’d think after his 17th season people would learn how to pronounce his name.

  40. By bselrn on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

Brett Farve is a great quarterback and I too believe Green Bay did him dirty but I don’t think he or the Vikings have enough to take on Dallas right now. Dallas is hot in all three facets of the game offense, defense, and special teams. The Vikings struggled and lost against red hot Arizona, lost to Carolina and Chicago who struggled all season. Truly Vikings fans face up to it that the Giants quit and really had nothing left to play for that last game after they royally embarrassed themselves at their last home game.

All the people getting offended: Chill out!! it’s all in good fun. Go Cowboys!! We’re gonna get a chance to see Favre get banged up real good. Sorry Viking fans, but your offensive line CANNOT handle our defense. We have toooooo many killers. Ware, James, Spencer, Ratliff, Brooking, Newman, Jenkins, Sensabaugh. Don’t make me bring up OUR OFFENSE. Goodluck.

It will be a long day for him Sat..ask Mc Nabb

You Viking fans are some dumb analysists, you keep basing a victory upon previous games of the Cowboys losing to the Giants twice and a Vikings victory over the Giants. Thats doesn’t mean anything. Plus the Cowboys and the Giants play each other twice every year and the rivalry takes the game to a whole other level no matter what the teams records are. All I can say is good luck because the Cowboys are gonna bring the pain. I wouldnt be surprised if Favre retires after this game.

Protect Breet and run some delay/draws with AP and chester and opur offense will move the ball just fine. In our dome with a noisy playoff crowd Romo will be jittery early. From before: I’m being totally honest in these, I know my football….QB: EVEN RB: DALLAS-> better o-line, and they have a 3-headed tandem, plus they have a power back, speed back, and all-purpose back. TE/WR: MINNESOTA -> Too much inconsistency from Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton. O-Line: DALLAS-> Bigger, better, bottom line.. D-Line: EVEN-> Jay Ratliff is both pa-ss rusher and run stopper, Anthony Spencer has been on a roll lately, for us, Minnesota, it’s too much #69 too often, and if it’s not him, it’s usually no one else, But we have the edge on stopping the run with Pat Williams. LB: DALLAS-> D.Ware is the best OLB in the NFL, and the loss of EJ Henderson is a major loss. DB: DALLAS-> Corners are somewhat close, but they have the edge in safety play. ST: MINNESOTA-> Better kicker, kick returners are pretty even with Felix Jones and Percy Harvin being dynamic. So, there you go, I’m a Vikings fan and I think the Cowboys have the edge….But, we all know u can win on paper, so, it really doesnt matter….Taht’s my whole point of this, to prove to the Cowboys fans that even though they may have some edges on us, it doesnt matter b/c u throw all that out the window come game-time…Hope u enjoyed

I agree with MAC. It’s okay in my book to be competitive and want our team to win, but all this trash talking should be canned. Texans are better than that. Come on guys, let’s let the pros decide who’s the best next weekend.

  56. By PAVikesFan on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

U cant win on paper, my bad, typo…..I say even in the QB department b/c currently Tony Romo is playing just as well as any QB in the playoffs. And, let’s face it, #4 has struggled in some playoff games, and so has Mr. Romo, Romo is more athletic, can escape pressure, and is one of the highest rated QB’s throwing on the run and outside the pocket…Therefore, EVEN

ok first of all the cowboys are so hot cuz they beat the eagles who of course werent that great to begin with all you have to do is cut out deshawn jackson. and oh they beat the saints but they lost to tampa bay the next week congrats cowboys the sucky bucs beat them too so not very impressed there. as far as the talent it is pretty even on the defensive side. vikes have a better dline hands down but i will admit the cowboys have better linebackers. but the vikings have the personel to shutdown some of the cowboys offensive power. winfield will put austin on lock. griffin can handle williams all we have to worry about is wittin and we can double him. also dallas will need a running game and i dont see kevin and pat letting them run so its all on romo and we know how he fairs when it is all left to him oh yea he chokes. ok he won his first playoff game in a blowout big whoop lets see how he handles a close game. and with adrian peterson in the vikes backfield i do not see the cowboys bein able to rush the passer as freely he is a way bigger threat than mccoy was for the eagles. and lets face it favre wanted to come to the vikes last year and he is looking to prove something i wouldnt wanna be in his way with all the weapons he has good luck stopping him dallas secondary which isnt that great in the first place. they dont have the talent all around to shut down the recievers. rice probably the best deep threat in the game besides deshawn jackson and percy one of the most electrifying players ok so the cowboys put newman and jenkins on them and try to slow them down. vikes have shaincoe and berrian the vikes receiving core is to deep and the qb throwing to them is to good and to experienced. vikes take it by 10

  59. By satown28 on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

and pavikesfan no the quarterback is not even ur talking a legend versus a guy who barely won one playoff game if the cowboys win it will not be because romo played better than favre and saying romo is better out of the pocket is insane because this season brett favre passing out of the pocket i believe was 76 percent or something i mean come on now brett favre hands down better qb

  60. By gamebreaker1971 on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

Hey, lets be real. Cowboys fans ( yes, I am in the minority, one who calls it like I see it Cowboy fan) are the most tempermental and fair-weathered fans in the world. They love to dish it out and can’t take it. Don’t worry about Romo having a bad game, it is Bret Farve who has to work past his mental blocks. It is true that Brett Farve has never( I mean never-ever) beaten the Cowboys on an astro-turf surface.

It is also true that the Cowboys have never faced a running back like Peterson who can take it the distance and break tackles while doing it. Dallas must establish points fast and first in order for their defense to get at you. If the Vikings play a bend to break defense (don’t give up the big play) it will be a tight one. 21-20 Cowboys.

  61. By steven on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

i really think this all comes down to the O line and the defenses

  62. By gamebreaker1971 on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

I meant bend and don’t break defense in the last post. This defense allows teams to have a mix of tight coverage on the primary recievers with support from the safeties playing zone deep. This allows you to get the 5 and 7 yard gains easily but you will run the risk of an int on the deep ball. This also requires your line to create alot of pressure for the QB because the blitzes will not be coming from the secondary or linebackers frequently. It does force linebackers to play zone, which leaves open for the inside run.

I dont understand why people think the cowboys are so hot? They beat a struggling saints team who needed a miracle to win at the skins, next week the cowboys beat them, then the next week the bucs beat the saints. So was it really that great of a win?

Cowboys beat the redskins… the skins stink

Cowboys beat a philly team at home who barely got past the broncos at home the previous week and who also lost on the road to Oakland. Im sorry but if you lose in Oakland your not a serious contender

Vikings put up about 70 points on a packers team whom the cowboys only scored 7 points on thanks to a junk time td..

Giants scored 2 wins on the cowboys while hanging up 70 points on them. Giants couldnt do anything on the vikings,

Cowboys are a good team, but im not buying the hype that they are best team in the playoffs…

    Go Vikings

Bottom line…This has been one of my all-time favorite seasons as a Vikings fan, if not the best ever. It’s been fun, and I’ve been thinking. When will we ever get another QB like #4 again?…Answer is, there will never be another Brett Favre again, and he’s almost out the door, know what I mean?…My feeling is, we have all this talent on this team, if we dont win it this year, then when will we ever?…We will never have another QB like the one we have now, he may be our last sh-ot to save this franchise and our best chance ever to turn this franchise around. That’s my fear, is that if we dont, then when?…This is our chance, this is our best chance, this is it, now or never. . This may be our best sh-ot we will EVER have.

Cowboys fan here. I don’t believe in trash talking, so all I’ll say is that we’re glad to be here playing a fine Vikings team. I definitely think both teams are evenly matched and while we might advantages in some areas, we have deficits in others. Like yourselves, we’re brimming with confidence and hope for a well played game. Instead of trying to win on turnover ratio, I’m hoping our ball control offense can chew up the clock like we’ve done the past 4 games, while capping off drives with TD’s. It should be exciting no matter what, but obviously I’m hoping we come out of it with another impressive win. I’m sure Viking fans feel the same. Time will tell.

Im loving the season that the vikings are having although being out of country the whole season has limited the viewing to sports sites and the occasional live web feed. I think that the winner of this game goes to play the chargers in the superbowl. I also think that the only way minnesota wins is if mckinnie gets help with ware, I think a good way to do this is more 2 back setups with different looke. AP and tahu, AP and Chester, AP and Harvin. These will allow for good chip blocks and good run looks with many pass options. AP gets at least 60 rushing without losing the ball to allow farve and the o-line to be effective I also believe that if winfield doesn’t play that may be enough for romo to pick apart the secondary. Winfields presence changes the course of the game by eliminating an effective target in austin, not missing tackles and creating big plays that elevate the game of everyone else on d. This will make the dome noise and allens presence enough to keep the ball in romos hand too long.

The cowboys win their first playoff games since their hay day with the aik man, big deal. Phili played like scared little kids and we all know their is nothing childish about the vikes. WE, i repeat, WE have the best defensive line in football. The past three years are proof of that and D. Ware won’t get a chance to chase down bret. Mckinnie got embarrassed against the panthers but since then he has been a beast. We’ll chip ware all day with a little klinesauser. While Shankapotamous runs straight down the seam wide open. Bret has come too far this season to get knocked out in the divisional round. Hopefully the cards can do our dirty work and take care of the aints cause woulnd’t it be nice to show kurt warner he’s not the saving grace. vikes roll 31-17 and the girls can go home and watch us play on Jerry Jones’ giant plasma. Should be plenty of room in the big stadium for all the cowboys egos. Oh yeah and AP, he’s gonna show how the vikes close out playoff games. Bret slings us into an early lead while adrian and chester nail down the coffin.

The game will most likely come down to offensive line play for both teams. The cowboys are playing well, and Mckinnie and Loadholt haven’t been great vs speed rushers. I dont know as much about the cowboys, but i know they scored 7 whole point against the redskins one game. Farve vs Cowboys in the past, give me a break, its meaningless. It would be like trashing the cowboys for not winning a playoff game for 14 years, only to beat an eagles team not near their best. Just a few weeks ago the so called “experts” were saying the cowboys were done. Now they say the cowboys are certain winners, we’ll see. I don’t think this is really goin to be a competitive game in all honesty, i think the vikings crush the cowboys 34-14.

This game will come down to players that have struggled this year….Madieu Williams, Tyrell Johnson, Jasper Brinkley, and John Sullivan..They all need to step their game up..We have the worst Safeties in the NFL…Win the turnover battle and protect Favre and we will be advancing to the NFC Championship..first since 2000′…I’m not one to be negative or point out who we dont have, but we really needed Matt Birk and Darren Sharper this postseason.

He’s had a few good games of late, but their offense has not seen the likes of a healthy fantastic four nor have they had the pleasure of playing in the dome and a hyped undefeated home team. Quiet when the Vikings are up and 130 decibels when the opponents are up. Go Vikes.

Of course, this will more than likely happen if the Vikes can’t get the running game in gear. And if the Boys fall behind early and their rythmn is disrupted the Vikes could win in a close one. Dallas wins a playoff game and the sky is falling! I’m always amazed at how their fans start in. Not much class. I like the matchups here. I think the Vikes have better personnel but D is peaking now. Bradshaw picks D, but D has never beaten #4 at home. I was at the last one at Lambeau and Favre made them look stupid! Everybody forgets that. He has more talent around him now than ANY other time they have met. EJ’s loss seems to have crippled the V defense. They need to step up. A shootout belongs to #4. Romo won’t hold up in a shootout.
Dallas D tells the story in this one, I think. Could be ugly for the Vikes if they don’t
    come ready.

  118. By nordicVSwildwest on Jan 11, 2010 | Reply

If it comes down to a shootout, Bart15, it also equates which defense pressures who the most. Old legs vs Young legs…who gets up time after time after being knocked down repeatedly…as usual both teams will try to establish the running game first and foremost. If it isn’t there, then look out for a shootout and both defenses will pin their ears behind their backs and go all out. Question is which defense will prevail…..

  126. By TBIRD on Jan 11, 2010 | Reply

First off I would like to state a few facts for these Dallas fans coming to our site, talking trash. You must have forgotten who you are. You have a quarterback who has zero post season accomplishments, just coming off his first playoff win. Second, Minn has the best scoring offense in the NFL. I say that because Favre took himself out of 6 games during the 3rd quarter this season and we still lit up the scoreboard. Third, we are not the Eagles and this game is not in Dallas. You are going to see how powerful home field advantage is as we are 8-0 at home. Your o-line is big and most penalized. Minn has the number 1 pass rush and the question you should ask yourself is “Is Romo going to collapse”? I just don’t see Minnesota going this far and getting beat in their first playoff game. Maybe on the road but not at home!!!!!

All the smack-talk is kind of irrelevant. These are 2 really good teams that will give us all a really good game. I’m a Cowboys fan for life, but I respect the Vikes for what they’ve done this season. Jared Allen is a beast, he’s one of my favorite non-Cowboy players, Favre has had his best-season. That being said…I have all the confidence in the world in the Cowboys. These are 2 very evenly matched teams. Ware/Allen, Ratliff/Williams’, Witten/Shiancoe, Austin/Rice…and Romo (right now)/Favre. Going to be a fantastic game. Go Cowboys!

I think all these Cowboy fans are on here talking junk because we are so used to trading jabs with Eagle fans twice (sometimes three) times a year. They are always talking trash (even the players like DeSean Jackson) on twitter,,, on how “de r da best” and “de scared of us cuz we gonna sting de azz. de betta watch out!” blah blah blah. So when we proceed to destroy their team and send them back to Philly with their tails between their legs, we (myself included) always love to return the favor. I have to admit I never got into the whole trash talking thing, I always felt it was stupid and pointless. I do however enjoy discussing and debating football with other intelligent football fans but unfortunately those people are few and far between on message boards. However my EXTREME distain for Eagle fans has drawn me to the “dark side.” So I’ll just say this, don’t worry about the Cowboy fans on your site talking junk. You only have a few more days left in your season and by this time next week the Cowboy fans will have moved on to their NFC championship opponents website to talk junk.

As a Cowboys fan, this game will bring me back to my childhood, when it was Staubach vs. Tarkenton, Bud vs. Tom. I respect Favre and what he has done to breathe life into Sidney Rice and I believe it will be a huge battle. I also love Jared Allen and how he plays the game. If i was a viking fan I would be very concerned about the cowboys. I dont think the cowboys will lose unless they has turnovers. Dallas defense is playing better than any other defense out there with the exception of ravens.Cowboys have not played like this since the early 90`s and there defense is playing much better than in the 90`s. The vikings do not match up very well with the cowboys. If cowboys keep the penaties down with no turnovers and play there game there is no way the vikings will win. haha your to funny..but all i hear is about crack pipes man.. talk some football..all you can say about the cowboys is that the collapse is coming..we are 8-0 at home this season so its not the easiest place to just walk in and get a win and when romo has allen and the williams breathing down his neck he is going CHOKE!!!!!!!!!

A.P’s going down and so is Farve. Old mans going to break his hip and your shot at another superbowl failure will be avoided cause even if you beat the cowboys, you won’t win the big show.

Dallas super bowl history v vicodins.
    Big D is 5-3 Minny is 0-4

You people that are saying the vikes will blow out the cowboys are idiots!!!

  172. By jeff on Jan 12, 2010 | Reply

I guess since you had a hard schedule playing lions twice, bears twice, rams, browns, seahawks, 49`rs. That makes the vikings superbowl champs. Give me a brake viking fans you dont have a clue whats going to happen to your team sunday.

    31-24 cowboys win

Vikes 2-2 last four games–not good–then bye-week=–hard to focus, will not be sharp–hearing lots of negative comments. Dallas have 4 game win streak–
2 shutouts back to back– has beaten an unbeaten team in a loud home field–
been there done that!-have three good running backs–hot Defense play–good Offense, that my friends ====VIKES PLAY THE WORST GAME!!!!
    COWBOYS WIN!!!!!

Oh, sorry my mistake!! meant to say Vikes 1-3 last four games

Being a Vikings life long fa I have one question? Why I am so worried about this game?

  177. By Kyle Blackwell on Jan 13, 2010 | Reply

It takes seriously ignorant people to think that either team will blow out the other. To me, this game is the real NFC Championship. Who here doubts that both the Cowboys and the Vikings can beat the Cards and the Saints? I mean it’s a cake walk over there in the other Divisional game lol. I think it’s going to be a relatively low scorig game for both our high powered offesnses and whoever turns the ball over the least will win. I don’t usually make predictions so i’ll say whoever scores 20+ points will win this game. That said, GO COWBOYS!

I like how the media and everyone else bashes Favre for throwing costly intereceptions but I watched Tom brady throw 3 INT and 1 Fumble and no one said anything but “he’s just having a bad day because he’s coming off of an injury” But when Favre threw the interceptions due to a shoulder injury in his throwing arm when he was on the Jets the media teared him apart.

NOW we see Rodgers throw an INT on his first play and a Fumble on the last play to win the game but EVERY ONE is only talking about how great he is to lead his team to a come back.

Isn’t there something wrong with this picture?

Brady has a bubble around him where no media or player can touch him apparently. That’s just how it is…so happy that dynasty is coming to a close. I hear they’re targeting T.O. this off-season. Go Cowboys!

Coming in to Minneapolis to see this. It really ought to be a good game. Both teams will get some yards on the ground. It will all come down to how well the front men play on both sides of the ball…GO COWBOYS!!!
