Vikings To Host Cowboys In Divisional Round Matchup

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on January 9, 2010 – 10:27 pm

Just as they did last weekend to conclude the regular season, the Dallas Cowboys took apart the Philadelphia Eagles at Cowboys Stadium, this time winning by a 34-14 score.

During the Week 17 matchup, Vikings fans were cheering for the Cowboys, as their win – coupled with Minnesota’s defeat of the New York Giants – gave the Vikings a 1st-round bye.  Now, Minnesota fans will pack into Mall of America Field next Sunday to cheer against the Cowboys and for their Vikings, as they will be Minnesota’s Divisional Round opponent on Sunday, Jan. 17.

Head coach Brad Childress will address the media live on tomorrow (Sunday) at approximately 12:45 p.m. after the team holds its first practice since being given the last week off.  The press conference will be posted on-demand by about 2 p.m. if you can’t watch live, but that will in essence kick off’s week of coverage of the matchup.’s Mike Wobschall will be updating the Blog all week long, and we’ll have various preview articles and videos to get you ready as well.

The Cowboys are arguably the hottest team in the NFL, as they carry a 4-game winning streak into Sunday’s game, with the wins coming at New Orleans – ending the Saints perfect season – at Washington, and then 2 in ‘Bid D’ against the Eagles.

Even though the game’s still over a week away, some key storylines to focus on heading into the matchup are:

– How will the Vikings start the game after having a week off?  After their regular season bye, Minnesota came out slow before blowing out Detroit.  However, this is the playoffs and they know that a slow start against the Cowboys could regulate in a one-and-done playoff run.

– The last time OT Bryant McKinnie went against an elite DE, Carolina’s Julius Peppers dominated the matchup and sent McKinnie to the bench.  Dallas’ DeMarcus Ware may be better than Peppers, so it’s going to be key for McKinnie to play a good game to protect QB Brett Favre’s blindside.  Plus, the coaching staff will likely devise some protection schemes to give McKinnie help.

– Minnesota has had trouble against TEs this season, and Dallas’ Jason Witten may be the best in the NFL.  Can the Vikings – and particularly the safeties – contain Witten?

–The Cowboys pass defense was 20th in the NFL during the regular season, so if the Vikings can protect Favre, he should be able to hit the likes of Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin and move the ball down the field.

– Conversely, the Cowboys were 4th in the NFL against the run.  Adrian Peterson had a solid regular season but didn’t seem as explosive as in his first 2 seasons.  Whichever team can run the ball better and keep the other team’s explosive offense off the field will have an edge.

–Cowboys WR Miles Austin is very dynamic and has had a huge year, despite not having great size.  Roy Williams is much bigger and may draw Cedric Griffin due to Griffin’s size matching up better with Williams than either Benny Sapp or Antoine Winfield.  If Winfield is healthy, look for him to lock horns with Austin for much of the day.

And will all that being said, turnovers and big plays will likely decide the game.

Make sure to stay with all week for complete coverage and exclusive access not found anywhere else heading into Sunday’s game.

unless we get pressure on romo we will need to score about 35 points to win..
we need turnovers and cannot give any up…the offensive line will have to play their best game of the year …good news i think winner of arizona/gb can beat no ..i think this game winner goes to sb…

worried about d. ware match up with overrated mckinnie. also worried about m. austin match up with winfield. (steve smith) don’t need to say more. i really think having brian robison in for ray edwards quite a bit wouldn’t be the worst thing. chilly’s game plan (i know i don’t know it) but i have a feeling it will be conservative worries me. home field crowd is a plus. but a couple of big plays out of dallas might quiet that. not worried about their run game i don’t care who they put in we’ll shut all 3 of them down. ap needs to have a big day and i don’t mean quantity, quality is what he needs to have. chester taylor also needs some reps. give favre time to get the ball to rice, harvin, shanc, and berrian (please no dropped pass-es) and we should come out with a win.

How great would it be for the Vikes to get a ring? And the fact that they did it with Favre is just icing on the cake! sweet

The Biggest concern is going to be the offensive line of the Vikings. If they cant get help for Bryant Mckinnie the vikes with have a long day and Favre will play worst than McNabb

it’s time for a payback, Dallas killed our team with that bad hershal walker trade, that trade set our team back at least 5 years. Dallas owner Jones is already saying Dallas will be favored to win. lets play smashmouth football and shut Dallas up for good!

Let’s put it this way – Cowboys are hot and having to play them at home is an advantage for the Vikings. I think the offense has to keep the tempo up and stay with the pass, allowing A.P. to get big runs in passing situations. The “D” has to put pressure on Romo and continue to stop the run. In my opinion the game comes down to our secondary and special teams and “D” causing turnovers while we avoid them. Also we’ve got to give Brett time to throw. Outcome – Vikings 34 Cowboys 27

Our secondary worries me in this match-up…Pressure is essential in this game. If we let him get into any kind of rythym, he will pick us apart. A little worried about who is going to man up with Miles Austin, we dont have any speed corners to keep up with him. Jasper Brinkley is going to be tested majorly. I expect Dallas to try and exploit him…They have the best defense in the playoffs, can McKinnie really block Ware 1on1?, bring Jim Kleinsasser in to help him out, or chip him with a back coming out of the backfield. We MUST establish a running game to nullify their pa-ss rush, we cannot be 1-dimensional in this game, it may have worked other games, but not in this one. They will tee off on #4 if we cant run the ball, our o-line has to man up and play like beasts…Should be a great game indeed

Logically & soberly I just don’t see the vikes matching up well against the boy’s, can you say multiple facet running game with power – Barber, speed – Jones and power finnesse of choice coupled with all pro tightend Witten and big play reciever trio of Austin, Williams and Crayton targeted by Romo. Key is defensive pressure on Romo & protection for Farve. Peters can be a factor early but if vikes get behind in scoring, that will minimize his impact on the game. If Farve does not get the protection he will be a sitting duck. McNabb was a much more mobile opponent with more explosive recievers in Jackson & Macklin but that did not help him much scoring only a trash time TD late in the game with the other coming on a trick play. The vikes coaching staff certainly has it’s work cut out for them with a streaking cowboy’s team coming to town and the daunting task of finding the right machups and game plan to keep a dynamic, balanced offense off the field. Mistakes and time of possession will be critical factors as alway’s can the vikes just switch it on against a quality opponent, stay tuned next week as it doesn’t get any easier!

Just doing some thinking here…On those draw play Dallas loves to run…We should be able to jam up the middle of the LOS, what I’m a little worried about is particularly Felix Jones bouncing it outside. Our DE’s must play disciplined, we must maintain outside contain, and Jasper Brinkley must fill the gaps. I’m also a bit worried about our safeties, particularly Tyrell Johnson. He cant bite on any play-action, he must play his role in the scheme, stay back in coverage, let the front 7 do their jobs. Chad Greenway or Ben Leber could have a big impact on this game, they will be put into position to make some plays. Cedric Griffin and whoever is our other starting corner this week cant play so soft, jam their WR’s, play physical.

Dear Fans: The Cowboys will not be riding into Dodge, they’ll be traveling to Minnesota. History tells us the dreaded James gang once came riding into Northfield, thinking smuggly they’d walk into the town bank there and leave rich men, but they wound up having a very, very bad day. We’ll find out how well Tony can pass looking out his earhole from the prone position.

The reason Dallas matched up so well with the Eagles is b/c they focused their entire game plan on defense on shutting down their pas-sing attack. And once they got a lead, the Eagles abandoned the run like always and Dallas was able to tee-off on McNabb. We have to take a much more balanced approach with them. Look at why Dallas has been winning, they have got out to early leads, and were able to blitz freely. If we can score first, thier whole gameplan goes out the window. Let’s see if they can play from behind. I dont think they will be phased by our crowd, b/c they play in front of 90,000+ each week. TOP is also key…Philly couldnt keep their O on the field, and their D wore out…Move the chains 10 yards at a time…

Give me a break Cowboys fans.

New Orleans was exposed in the weeks before they lost to Dallas with weak wins against the Skins and the like. And who has Dallas beaten? The skins – and yes – the Eagles twice who they admittedly own.

No such luck this time with the 12th man, week off, Brett’s experience and all those weapons?

Dallas is due for a Reality check – and guess what – THEY’RE GOING TO GET IT!

Why are there so many annoying Cowboy fans on the Vikings website? The Cowboy’s website has the same article and it has about three (at the time of writing) comments. Strange. Vikings fans aren’t logging on to your site and commenting about your team. I wonder why. Maybe because we don’t care what you have to say. Not saying you aren’t welcomed, just pointing out how annoying and unimportant you are. This game will be close. Surprise, I think the Vikes will win. Cowboys win one playoff game since the internet was invented and all of a sudden they are going to blow us out in our dome. Good one.

I hope the Vikings win and the Packers do too and they face each other in Minn. for the right to go to the Super Bowl! All this jawing back and forth doesn’t mean anything if the games aren’t played well! I’d like to see BRETT FAVRE & the Vikings win the Superbowl, and him get the MVP, that he got shorted out of in the last Packer S.B.

Boy fan here. I hadn’t kept up with the Vikes ,but a fan of urs made the comment on Mckinnie may have problems with Ware, that he would need help. If that happens then there is Spencer and Raliff that would be left on a one to one. Favre WILL have a bad day with that kind of rush. In the past when the Cowboys would put pressure on Favre he would start gunslinging and forcing the ball causing INTs. Romo was like that BUT is now maturing.
Overall it will be a GREAT game for fans. Like it or not Viking fans the Boyz are going to be a handful Good luck to both teams. By the way, A.P. graduated from my high school in Tx.

Viks have not seen a defense all season like the Cowboys. Only way they win is if their O line can give Farve some time, which is unlikely. Not sure the Viks D can stop the Cowboys O enough to win. Should be a good game!

I predict the score to be 17 to 10, Vikes win! The Vikes will start off strong, then slow down. The Cowboys will catch up but the Vikes will pull ahead in the end. Brett Favre will throw 2 pics, Romo will throw 4. The Vikes O line will come in underrated and because of that, will excel to go beyond expectations. The Vikes D line will have 3 to 4 sacks while the Cowboys will have 2. Expect big plays from Favre but don’t rule out the run game. The Vikes will alternate with running and gunning to throw off the Cowboys defense.

  66. By jimbo92107 on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

This is going to be a game predicated on speed, speed and more speed. I don’t think rookie Jasper Brinkley will be able to handle the mis-direction Romo and the ‘Boys will throw at him. I would rather see Onatalu or Farwell in there at Mike…even a safety like Sanford is better than a guy who’s out of position half the time. Faster will be better against the tricky Dallas draws and play-action. Otherwise, just tell Brinkley to charge straight ahead and rush the passer. Tackle anything coming your way. If nothing else, Brinkley might be able to disrupt their backfield.

Man, do I miss EJ Henderson…

Look, real talk. The front 7 of dallas are playing like beats right now. AP should neutralize some of that.. But not all. They are not gona let him beat dallas. no one back has gotten 100 against them. It will be on Farve. Bet the house childress runs 7-12 screens to rb’s wr’s and te’s. to neutrualize the rush. If dallas gets continous pressure with 4 rushers it wont b pretty. minnesota cn make plays against the blitz they should be able to have the advantage. AGAIN it will b on Farve though. He has been mistake prone in the playoffs. Dallas will not run for that much however they tend to move the chains in gashes of 8-15 yards. They drive down the field. Minnesota will need to be disciplined. if they send da blitz alot they will get burned. all in all. COWBOYS WIN 27-17
    Farve 21-39 245 Td 2int
    Peterson 18 86 TD
    Harvin 4 90yards Rice 7 98 TD

    Romo 25-38 312 2td 1 int
    Jones 13 49 TD
    Austin 6 119 Td
    Witten 7 87
    Crayton 3 32 Td

While watching yesterday’s Cowboy’s win, I thought I heard that Dallas leads the NFL in yards made after completion. That is an area I would want the Vikings to really limit.

We need some serious hits on defense to * make those Cowboy players see more stars * than on the uniforms of their team-mates.

I think overall this game makes for an amazing match-up.

The Cowboys may be a good team, but they represent all that is wrong in the world of sports today. Their stadium is more of a circus than an arena (cage dancers, are you kidding me ??), their coaches are all cookie cutter images of Jerry “look how much money I have” Jones, and their QB is more interested in his off field image than being a warrior on game day. The days of the Cowboy’s claim of being “America’s Team” are over. GO VIKINGS !

  94. By 4everdallas on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

well people lets be honest now the match ups are too off balanced the viks are a good team but honestly the cowboys will be toomuch for them. dallas is going to the nfc championship point blank. viks off line isnt enought to contain ware, spears and spencer and lets not mention newman, henry, shutting down corners, bobby carpenter, brooking i can go all day and thats just defense. now on for the off now if the viks had the secondary to double on the dallas wideouts they would have a chance but they dont. roy, crayton, m.austin witten I mean with those four at least 3 of them are players they need double coverage so what does that say? where one player is doubled there will always b a man for romo Viks are too young and havn’t had a true team reall all season and come next week the differents in match ups and pure talent on the teams will seperate the two. im sure dallas will win by a multiple touchdown margin.

Go Vikings! Dallas is the hottest team right now, you have to make sure you are ready to play on Sunday. Keep your confidence level up but not over confident, play like the great team you are. All Day Adrian keep scrambling to get that big run. The left side seems to be your best side. Play like you are in the SuperBowl. Have a great practice this week and good luck on Sunday. Go Vikings!!!!

I’ve been a Vikings fan since the early 70′s when Tarkenton was “The Man”! I have remained loyal through the last 33 years of NOT making it to the Superbowl. When we lost the playoffs in ’98 to Atlanta, I knew it would be another 10 years before we would have a chance again. Now we’re here. We have that chance. I am begging my Vikes not to break my heart again. It was hard for me to accept Favre as our QB, because he’s been my sworn enemy forever, but he has proven that he cares about this team and I believe he can lead them to vistory if the offensive line gives him the time he needs to connect with Rice, Harvin and Berrian. Peterson is overrated and I worry about him dropping the ball. Keep the turnovers down and we can win! God Bless our Vikings!!

This is going to be a high scoring game on both sides. Realistically it is extremely hard to pick a clear winner here. Still there are certain advantages that MN has that ultimately will put the Vikes on top. Home field advantage is huge at the notoriously loud Metro-Dome. The crowd there will fire up the team. Can you say false start? Look for a big game from Jared Allen and the Williams wall to help keep the Dome undefeated into the postseason. I wont lie, I am a bit worried given the Cowboys performance as of late. I am just betting that Dallas thinks that this will be like a Philly blow-out and gets a rude awakening. Lets go boys. This is our year.

Brett will do what he does best: read the coverage and adjust as needed.
AD will hold on to that ball and leap over the defensive line into the endzone.
Percy will return kicks for huge yardage.
Jared will knock Romo down…more than once!
    Rice will make incredible catches.

I do agree our secondary on defense are going to have their work cut out for them. Hopefully Greenway and Leber can help Winfield keep Romo from throwing to many bombs. I would like to see a pick or two from Winfield. Lets hope Longwell has his weedies, so he can kick a couple of touch backs. Special teams will need to be at their best. I agree with an earlier comment about paying Dallas back for that bad Hershel Walker trade. I am hoping for a victory in the dome. Viking fan in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Go getting Vikes !!!!!!

What that means to me is that cowboy fans are trash talkers is this all you have time for is bull, the vikes are a quality team with heart and integrity and I,m sure thy will leave it all on the field. The cowboys need all this pumping up to make themselfs feel important well thats ok do it on your web site were you can sound smart. We here like to talk about positive things! This will be a game for sure. The Minnesota fans are also quality people with integrity ,heart and honor and I think this team and its coaches have learned from them. So cowboy fans take it back to dallas. We will leave it at the metrodome. Fans and Team !!!! BEAWARE YOU WILL BE IN FOR A FIGHT FOR 60 MIN AND HEART ALWAYS WINS. Good Luck to both. I don’t dwell in the past but since you mentioned Romo’s fumble in Seattle two year’s ago I might want to refresh your memory that about a week later Farve threw an interception in overtime against the Giants in the conference championship game at Lambeau Field to lose that game as the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl.

After the Pack wins today & next Sat., next Sunday the Cowboys may be looking past the Vikes to seek revenge on their loss to the Pack! But also the Vikes may be looking past the Cowboys to the Pack, because of the “thinking” of how hard it is to beat a team 3 times in one season!Anyway GO Brett & the Vikes! For the Viking fans that’s going to be at the game do us all a favor Make as much noise as possible to make it hard for the Cowgirls to play and hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the team play like you did during the last game and you guys will take it all. For the Cowgirls out there that like to talk trash, you girls would not have won if the eagles did not make as many fouls and mistakes as they did. The Eagles gave it to you, the win that is.

It doesn’t matter who made up the nick America’s Team. The fact is we Cowboys fans love it and we love it even more when it burns the haters. lol. Fact is, Dallas is the only team in NFC with a legit D. They’ve held every high scoring offense ( with some very talented receivers and rushers) way below their average score throughout the season. Why should Vikings’ fate be any different ? Fact is, Dallas D can and will choke Vikings’ O but the Vikings’ D can’t keep up with Dallas O. Simple. Cowboys win. Game over.

Dallas wins virtually every matchup on the field except Rice, and is flaming hot. Every single analyst and X-player says Cowboys win big. In this case, they’re right. Double digit loss for us. McKinnie versus Ware. Back helping not enough – been tried by others and failed. Spencer on the other side. Are you kidding me? They get pressure with 3 and 4 – no time for Favre at ALL, and at the same time, they have plenty of bodies left for coverage. This is really an easy call – Dallas big. They catch the ball in stride – they do everything we can’t stop.

As a long suffering Vikes fan, I am painfully aware of the fact that the Vikes have no SB victories, and am accustomed to having my dreams smashed on the living room floor late season. However, saying “my team destroyed that team and that team beat yours” or you “lost to that weak team” has absolutely no bearing on the game to be YET to be played. There is a game or two each year that “coulda, shoulda been”. That is why they play them each week rather than crown a winner before the kickoff occurs. My point is, this should be a good game between two teams that deserve to be where they are. I would be quite surprised if either team dominates the other and expect that the team that makes the fewest mistakes will come out on top. Let’s keep the debate civil, the arguments logical, and leave the name calling to the grade schoolers. Looking forward to a hard fought game between 2 quality teams, so SKOL Vikings, go out and play like a team of destiny!!!!

  204. By jimboslice on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

Sarkish, must we drive another cowboys fan off our site. Face the facts, your team is going to lose in the THUNDERDOME. A place where the vikings are undefeated. A place where we are going to stay un defeated!

  205. By Sarkish on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

@ itsthevikesyear , sounds like you’re the one without a clue. its not receivers VS receivers. its receivers VS defense. and Dallas D is a beast which’ll make your receivers cry and beg for leniency. Not to mention, we’ll see how long Favre stays accurate or even holds up mentally/physically once he starts getting hit/sacked every other play. For reference see Drew Brees and McNabb.
    Go Cowboys!

  206. By Sarkish on Jan 10, 2010 | Reply

jimboslice the Aints were undefeated period! we beat them in their house. One of the toughest places for visiting teams. Patriots got humiliated at the Superdome. Dallas went as underdogs and embarrassed the Aints.
As I said, why should the Vikings fate be any different ? All the matchups favour the Cowboys. you’ll do well to read the writing on the wall. :)

i don’t see any undefeated teams around right now. so your point about dallas losing 5 games isn’t really valid since every team lost games at one point or another, for one reason or another. having said that, Colts were probably the only team that could’ve remained undefeated.
the only thing that remains to be seen is play on the field. if both teams play their best, with the personnel they have, Cowboys win. the only scenario where the Vikings win is if the ‘boys just forget to execute or mail it in. i for one, don’t see that happening. :)

This will be the game of the year. Home field is a huge advantage for the Vikings. Looking for our nine pro-bowlers to all have a big game. I see a lop-sided Viking victory in which will quiet all the critics over the corse of this season. Brett is the MVP, he made the biggest impact to his team and elevated all around him. Go Vikings 38-24 will be the final outcome.NFC championship will be played in Minnesota against the Pack. Viking-San Diego Superbowl.

Conspiracy theory at its finest……… What both sides are missing here is that this is all preordained and decided. Vikes win this game, GB beats Cards and Saints next week setting up THE MEDIA HYPE Game of the…. well maybe ever. Vikes beat GB in NFC championship. Jets make a startling run thru the AFC and it’s a Vikes vs. Jets SB with the Vikes taking home their first SB win. Favre gets to defeat his two prior teams, go out on top, and retires the media favorite he has always been. Now isn’t that a story eh? Don’t you all feel it? Doesn’t it seem…… almost likely?

Fate it seems, is not without a certain sense of irony. ;-)

awww, sorry to keep you guys waiting for a reply. i was a little occupied else where. lets see then … Defense wins championships. we all know that. lets rewind to the 13-3 cowboys team that lost to the giants in the playoffs. giants ha d a better D that carried them all the way to the superbowl. otherwise both the cowboys and the patriots had better Os than the giants.
now lets look at your losses this season. you lost to Cardinals because Arizona played better D and shut down your offense; your defense couldn’t contain Arizona’s. You lost to the bears because your D couldn’t keep the bears from scoring. the BEARS!! and again, loss to carolina, a team with a pretty good defense. cowboys D is playing at a higher level than carolinas at the moment so thats a bad sign for the vikes again.
all you guys asking about the cowboys 5 losses ? every team LOST games this seaason, whats your point ? lol. right now we’re on a 4 game winning streak, with 3 wins over playoff teams. your team is on a 1 win streak with crushing losses to the bears and carolina. better bring your A game or get ready to be embarrassed like the Aints and the Iggles.
now i’m off. America’s Team will own the Mall of America Field. :)

I found this site by trying to get some info on individual match-ups. Lotta smack, too much from Dallas fans and I’m a Cowboy fan since I was a 10 year old and the Ice Bowl. Remember vividly the Bud Grant years … one he11uva coach!

The Vikes opened as a 2 1/2 point fav. I see this game as a toss up, with the possibility of the game getting out of control for either team. I am at a loss as to the possible outcome. I like Brett Farve (son of the South) and respect the Vikes organization.

I see the Cowboys having problems with your R def end … # 69. I think its possible for AP to go wild on us too. Favre is 2-0 against the ‘Boys when he is at home and 0-7 when at Dallas but take a lot of that kinda stuff with a grain of salt. Dallas also has injuries in their RB’s. Romo has a bad back but has been playing with that most of the season. Having said that Romo seems to have found himself or matured or whatever since midseason.

Our def secondary has come on as our whole D. We startted the year with 5 new guys on D and a very young secondary. They have jelled and Phillips is handling the defense personally.

I really wonder how these 2 teams will match up, by position and team strengths.

Sorry if this Cowboy fan has invaded y’all’s space! Have a good one.
