Vikings Secure No. 2 Seed And First-Round Bye In NFC

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on January 3, 2010 – 6:20 pm

Thanks to their win today over the NY Giants and Dallas’ 24-0 victory over the Eagles, the Vikings have locked up the No. 2 seed in the NFC and thus will be off next weekend.

The Saints, of course, secured the top seed by virtue of Minnesota’s loss at Chicago last Monday.  The Cowboys will be the No. 3 seed and will again host the Eagles, who dropped to the No. 6 seed with their loss today.

In another rematch from week 17, the Packers – who beat the Cardinals 33-7 today in a game that saw the Cardinals rest many of their starters – will again travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals.  Green Bay will be making their 3rd trip to Arizona this season as they also played there in the preseason.

Any way you slice it, today could not have gone better for the Vikings.

As a taxpayer being asked to fund a new stadium for the Vikings i would like to see them play the game till the last second. They let up when they were up by 40 points. if they want tax payer money for stadium welfare they should play the entire game for us!

Call me crazy but I honestly think the Packers are going to beat the Cards, then the Saints and will lose to the Vikings in the NFC Championship.

THE VIKES WILL GET THE LOWEST SEED OUT OF ALL THE GAMES NEXT WEEKEND…DAN. SO WHO EVER PLAYS NEXT WEEKEND AND WINS AND IS THE LOWEST SEED….MEANING, THE BEST TEAM OUT OF WHO IS LEFT,AS FAR AS RANK.

great job vikes we are all proud of the way you finished the season. keep it rolling. quick question: if we win at home our 1st playoff game and the saints lose do we get the next playoff game (nfc championship) at our house? i think i already know the answer but not sure. i’ll say this we had some horrific games towards the end but we closed in great fashion. now the real season begins. GO VIKES

How and when is it determined if the game is going to be on Saturday or Sunday??

  20. By SkolVikings on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Considering the pace the Saints have been on, its plausible to have 2 games in the dome … that would be extend our chances of advancing.

  21. By PurplePeopleEater on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

To make things a little more clear, here are the the possibilities of our opponents:
If Cardinals win, they come to the dome.
If Cardinals lose, the winner of the Dallas/Philly game comes to the dome.

    And, assuming we win:
If Saints win, we go to their house.
If Saints lose, we play for the NFC Championship in the Dome.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get to play the Packers one more time in the Dome. This time for the NFC Championship. In fact, I’d be disappointed if we didn’t get to!

  22. By PurplePeopleEater on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Forgive me for that last statement – I mixed up the standings in Round 1.

The situation is if DALLAS wins they come here, otherwise the winner of the Packer/Cardinal Game comes here.

The one advantage of a quick loss in the playoff’s is maybe we won’t have to spend tax payer money for a stadium bailout.

  26. By PurplePeopleEater on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Hiltner, what difference is it going to make if we win by 37 points or 51? It’s a complete massacre either way, and playing the backups for the final Quarter plus makes it that much more likely that our guys will be healthy in the playoffs.

Also, taxpayer moeny that is spent on things that are likely to increase the tax revenue of the state, (such as a new stadium) makes much more sense than many other things that taxpayer money is spent on. Let’s go rally against those other things instead.

  27. By Adam Hagen on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Mr. Hiltner. Just enjoy the victory instead of bringing your liberal dome and gloom to the fans.

  28. By PurplePeopleEater on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Jacob & Timmy – My first guess is that the bettter home team (best seed) gets to play the Sunday game. This leads me to conclude that Saturday will be Philly @ Dallas, and Sunday will be GB @ Arizona. Then next week the Vikes will play on Saturday while the Saints will get the Sunday game. Take in mind, this is just a guess.

Our next game is a lock–we should STOMP anyone in the Dome!

The real test will be the Championship game … I REALLY hope somebody upsets the Saints! If so, we’ll play the Championship game in the Dome too! Playing the Saints in NO would be tough! We can still beat them if were on our game, but with the hit-and-miss Vikings I’ve seen the last 5 weeks …

If we are going to do a Stadium Welfare Bailout Plan for the Vikiings then let’s let the Taxpayer call some plays!!! Let’s run up the score, and play a full game. This half ass stuff when your up by 40 points is weak. They can play however they want if they don’t demand my tax dollars to do it. Then I have no say.

Ridiculous statement Mr. Whatever…Ur team just won and ur complaining about winning by “only” 37 points…It’s guys like u that wont fund for a new stadium. Would u rather have them playing in another state? If not, then dont complain. If yes, then pick another team. It just disappoints me when I hear that, I guess it’s where I live. The east coast is more into their sports, that wouldnt even be a ? for any east coast team. New stadium?, no problem, we’ll fund it. I know ppl up there are more conservative, and it’s that attitude that just may cost u ur ‘local’ team…Aside from that, let’s put to rest the scenarios. DAL wins, we play them. PHI wins, then we get winner of GB-ARZ game…Pick ur poison, it doesnt matter to me. It’s playoff time, u have to win no matter who u play, bottom line

Well said PA. It seems that far too many people up here try to find and complain about what’s wrong with something good rather than enjoy it for everything that it is. So on the positive side, that INT was the most exciting play that I have seen from our defense all year! I was at the game, so I didn’t get the advantage of seeing a replay, but for anyone who had that luxury, did it appear to be a clean catch? If so, AWESOME! If not, it was still a GREAT effort.

  42. By Randz527 on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

I would be very afraid to play the Green Bay Packers again. That team just seems to be playing the best out of all 6 teams in the playoffs. If that reciever for Pitt drops that ball, they have won 8 games in a row. And not just winning the games but destroying the teams they played. For some reason the media is staying away from the Packers. Plus their defense is alot better now too. I think their defense is alot better than ours right now. And if we do play them in our dome. You know the Packer fans will be there in full force. They always are. We have TO MANY fare weather fans in Minnesota. What do you guys think.

  43. By PAVikesFan on Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Uhh, Yes, they are playing serious ball right now. But, to me, it doesnt matter who u play in the playoffs. U still have to win, bottom line. Trust me, if they beat Arizona, then the media will be talking about them next week. I think Dallas has the best overall team. Their defense is the real deal, they can play vs. anybody.

  68. By PurplePeopleEater on Jan 4, 2010 | Reply

“Seed” is the term used for playoff ranking. The playoff games are decided by playoff seeds. 6 teams from each conference go to the playoffs. 4 divisions each send their playoff champion, and the remaining 2 teams (labeled Wild Card teams)are decided by the next 2 remaining teams with the best records within the conference. Seeds are then ordered as follows:
    1. Division Champ with Best Record
    2. Division Champ with 2nd Best Record
    3. Division Champ with 3rd Best Record
    4. Division Champ with 4th Best Record
    5. Wild Card Team with Best Record
    6. Wild Card team with 2nd Best Record

The team with the better seed in any playoff game is the team that gets to host the game. As is evidenced by the Vikings record, homefield makes a big difference in the result of the game.

The Vikings could do away with the Packers one more glorious time. It would be great if it was the Vikes who ruined there entire season.

What an a%%-kicking! Just goes to show what the Vikes are capable of when the entire team shows up to play! Not sure how much of it was Vikings playing great vs Giants missing in action, but it was still great fun to watch the demolition of an NFC East team! Still haven’t exactly got used to seeing Favre wearing a purple helmet… but maybe, just maybe, the reverse karma the team got by bringing the Vikes’ super nemisis onboard can finally break the Super Bowl jinx and make champions out of chokers! Keep it going fellas!

So do you really think the Vikings are peaking right now? I think we just beat up on a life-less team. The Giants had nothing to play for. There is no pride anymore in the NFL. Its about the money. And I think this bye week will hurt us more than help us. We need to be consistant. And having a week off does not do that.

Hey, you play who they put in front of you, right? Should have beaten the Bears last Monday, but the defense and special teams decided to stay on the bus that night – UGGGLLLYYY. This week the Giants came in to the game with basically the same personnel they had last year, the difference was that the entire Viking team came ready to play and the Giants obviously didn’t.

Bottom-line is that the Vikes will win it all when the defense and special teams play with the same intensity that Favre and AP play offense with on every down throughout the game. We’ve seen that the Viking defense can play well when given a nice lead. But we’ll know we have really something special when the defense can step up, take control and shut the other guy down late in the 4th quarter of a close, hard fought game game when the offense is having problems getting on track. Favre is great, but I want NASTY defense and special teams play for 60 minutes. Favre can’t be expected to pull a San Fran ending to every game, you know? GO VIKES!

I think Green Bay is going to beat Arizona. Dallas will beat Philadelphia. We face Dallas and beat them. The packers beat the saints. Then we face Packs in the NFC Championship. Either way I have a feeling we’re going to play packers. Arizona crushed us several weeks ago and although they are banged up I don’t know if I want to face them. Whatever happens happens.

But it would be a great way for favre to go out if they play the packers one more time and eliminate them. Go to the Superbowl and face the jets ( the team that he was on last year) the media would eat it up.
