Vikings Cage Bengals, Clinch Playoff Spot

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 13, 2009 – 4:04 pm

The Vikings were back at Mall of America Field this weekend after last week’s Sunday night loss to Arizona and they got back on the winning track with a 30-10 pounding of the AFC North-leading Cincinnati Bengals.

The Vikings were led by an impressive defensive performance and a well-rounded offensive output. The special teams unit also played well as the Vikings put together a complete team performance to take down the Bengals.

The win improves Minnesota to 11-2 on the season and it clinches a spot in the NFC playoffs.

We’ll have continuing coverage of the Vikings victory for the rest of tonight and into next week on vikings.com.

Minnesota National Guard Troop Visit – Blog Entry No. 17

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on December 13, 2009 – 3:33 pm

Vikings Entertainment Network’s Bryan Harper and KFAN’s Mike Morris, the former Vikings longsnapper and current host of “The Power Trip Morning Show,” will be traveling to Iraq to visit Minnesota National Guard Troops over the next week or so.  Both men will be updating fans via the vikings.com Blog on their trip about the experience.

Below is the duo’s 17th entry, sent via BlackBerry from Kuwait.

Morris/Harper: the game on AFN on the big screen here in Basra was amazing… it was a lot more like being at the game than you would think. They played Skol Vikings after each score and the reaction/noise was great. A fun time was had by all… it was great to hear that the Mall of America Field production took several shots of the fans here as well as at least a half dozen looks on the CBS broadcast… when it works out like that – it feels good to be a part of it. There was some emotion here tonight… you could see the feelings of “home” first-hand. The troops will be home soon and we cant wait to greet them when they arrive back home. A few more blogs to come, we leave Iraq soon for the long trip home.

Today’s Rookie Rundown

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 13, 2009 – 11:05 am

Plenty of attention will be focused on today’s battle at Mall of America Field between the NFC North-leading Vikings and the AFC North-leading Cincinnati Bengals. People want to know – can QB Brett Favre and Co. rebound? Will Cedric Benson go for 100 against the Vikings defense? How will Antoine Winfield play in his return from injury?

But another interesting subplot has developed this week. Injuries have fostered circumstances that will put several Vikings rookies in a showcase today.

WR/KR Percy Harvin has been ruled out of today’s game, so he’s one rookie who won’t be showcased. But every other member of the team’s draft class will play an important role in today’s game. Here’s a quick look at each of them:

RT Phil Loadholt – The 2nd rounder will start his 11th game today but he is coming off an injury to his shoulder that he suffered last week in Arizona. Loadholt came back in the game and finished, but it’ll be interesting to see how he responds today against a stout Bengals defensive line.

CB Asher Allen – Antoine Winfield is back in the starting lineup and Cedric Griffin will also go today after injuring his neck last week, but Allen will continue to have a significant role because CB Karl Paymah is inactive. Allen will be on the field often for both special teams duty and defensive snaps.

LB Jasper Brinkley – The injury last week to E.J. Henderson forced the Vikings to place him on injured reserve. As a result, Jasper Brinkley steps into the starting lineup and into the eye of the storm of the Vikings defense. How will he transition? Will the Vikings defense go on without missing a beat? It’s up to this talented 5th rounder.

S Jamarca Sanford – Starter Tyrell Johnson suffered a concussion last week and will not play today. Sanford steps in and will play alongside Madieu Williams. Sanford has been awesome on special teams for the Vikings this season and I’m anxious to see him play as a starter on defense.

Vikings Defense, Benson Set To Battle

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 13, 2009 – 10:45 am

The Vikings enter today’s game against the Bengals with a 35-game streak of not allowing an individual to rush for 100 yards. The streak goes back over 2 years, is the longest active streak and is the longest such streak since the Ravens went 38 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher.

The player to break Baltimore’s streak earlier this season was Bengals RB Cedric Benson. In that game, he carried the ball 27 times for 120 yards and 1 TD. Today, Benson goes up against the Vikings and most-certainly has his sights set on breaking another streak.

Based on recent history, you’d think Benson will have ample opportunity to gain 100 rushing yards today. In his last 3 full games, Benson has rushed the ball 36, 34 and 37 times. Cincinnati is 2nd in the NFL with 406 rushing attempts on the season.

On the other hand, NFL Network’s Steve Wyche commented this morning on NFL GameDay Morning that recent acquisition Larry Johnson might be getting more carries as the season continues down its home stretch. This is most likely an attempt to keep Benson, the team’s workhorse, fresh for the postseason. The Bengals are a lock to make the playoffs and having their bellcow fresh and ready to roll will be important for the playoff prospects.

Aside from breaking the Vikings 35-game streak, Benson has additional motivation to do well today. In 4 career games against the Vikings as a member of the Chicago Bears, Benson averaged just 41.0 yards per game.

Minnesota National Guard Troop Visit – Blog Entry No. 16

Below is the duo’s 16th entry, sent via BlackBerry from Kuwait.

Morris/ Harper: Had the opportunity to go thru rollover training which is a classroom setting on what to do if your ground convoy overturns at either 90 degrees or 180 degrees. Then went to the demo unit and went through an actual rollover at both angles. Phenomenal… you think its going to be no big deal but you become completely disoriented as to where you are in the vehicle.

They have a golf driving range on base…not your typical visit to a golf range either… you have green astroturf pads to hit off of and you are standing on plywood and hitting towards a big area of dirt (essentially what everything is). But it was nice to hit a few golf balls and to be able to say that we have hit golf balls in Iraq.

Minnesota National Guard Troop Visit – Blog Entry No. 13

Below is the duo’s 13th entry, sent via BlackBerry from Kuwait.

Morris / Harper:  The Serving Our Troops Steak Dinner held here in Basra and with National Guard families at Roy Wilkins auditorium was awesome. We have been with their group since we got here and were able to help grill and serve Mancini steaks. Some of the soldiers were able to eat 2-3 steaks each… most selected temperature was medium rare followed closely by rare. The meat here is boiled and is always way overdone. The smells were great, Brian Leighton of GB Leighton played great music and many said it was the most fun they have had since they have been here… and they all said it was the best meal since they have been here. Nice to see the smiles. Lots of credit goes to the Serving Our Troops group from St. Paul – they headed out of base this morning. Safe travels to you Pat, Ted, Joe, JB, Dave, Johnny, Pete, Dan and anyone else I may have forgotten.

Minnesota National Guard Troop Visit – Blog Entry No. 12

Below is the duo’s 12th entry, sent via BlackBerry from Kuwait.

Morris / Harper:  T-walls might be a new term for you… this base is filled with them. They are large vertical concrete walls that form barriers/barricades/guardrails etc… they are everywhere… its a world of concrete and mud. We are hoping to find a way to paint one purple prior to the Vikings game… lots of interest… just trying to track down the paint.
