Longwell Steady Again In Vikings Win

The Vikings had several reminders of the benefits of a steady kicker in Sunday’s 33-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens at Mall of America Field. K Ryan Longwell converted 4 of 4 FGs and all 3 extra points while Baltimore saw a game-winning FG attempt sail wide left as time expired.

Once again Longwell was solid for the entire game and then came up clutch with the game on the line. He converted FGs of 40 and 22 yards in the 3rd quarter and then was true from 29 yards with just over 6 minutes to play in the game. That kick gave the Vikings a 30-17 lead.

But Baltimore stormed back and eventually stole the lead with under 4 minutes to play. QB Brett Favre and WR Sidney Rice hooked up for a long completion on the ensuing drive and that set Longwell up for another FG try. He was true again from 31 yards, and his 4th FG of the day turned out to be the game-winner.

Longwell now has 7 game-winning FGs over the last 3+ seasons, which puts him in a tie with Fuad Reveiz for most game-winning FGs as a Viking. Longwell also has now made 58 of his last 60 (96.6%) FG tries from inside 45 yards and he extended his team record for most consecutive FGs made from inside 40 yards to 37.
