Community Tuesday Kicks Off Today

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 15, 2009 – 11:01 am

Vikings players begin their Community Tuesday efforts today and will kick it off by participating in the ARC Greater Twin Cities 6th Annual “Celebration of Sorts” at Southdale Mall from 12:45-1:45.

TE Visanthe Shaincoe, along with teammates S Colt Anderson, RB Ian Johnson, WR Nick Moore and C John Sullivan, will be tagging, sorting and assembling Halloween costumes at the event. The players will also recognize and thank the more than 500 volunteers who will also participate.

The players and volunteers will sort and assemble approximately 100,000 Halloween costumes that will be sold at Arc’s Value Village Halloween Boo-tique.

The United Way-funded Arc Greater Twin Cities serves the many needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Established in 1946, Arc has been changing attitudes, changing policies and changing lives for more than 60 years.

So I went to this thing, and was kind of disappointed. I was lucky enough to be at the table that John Sullivan chose, but only got to say about 2 words to him before the pushy TV camera butted in and talked with him the whole time until he had to leave! Still had fun chatting with other fans and helping out though. Plus I found some stuff to make a cool idea for a Halloween costume: Green Bay Favre Jersey plus a Darth Vader Helmet. Don’t be too surprised if you see a Darth Fav-re in the fan shots at the dome!

What a great day. I was really impressed by how cool and down-to-earth all the players were. Shianco was awesome. Funny, entertaining and just a regular guy. Kind of renews my faith in professional athletes, given the fact that most press you see these days doesn’t exactly portray some in the best light.

Great job by ARC and United Way getting a LOT of costumes organized to be sold to help a great cause, too! Be sure to check out the ARC Thrift Shops to get a great deal on your Halloween costume! Thanks to the Viking’s organization and the players who took time out of their day to help out. I’m definitely a bigger fan (if that’s possible) because of it!
