Reports: Williamses Cleared To Play In 2009

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 11, 2009 – 11:17 am

According to multiple published reports, including both the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune, Vikings DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams will not be suspended this season after testing positive for a banned substance last year.

Today’s ruling came from a 3-judge panel with the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, who upheld  District Judge Paul Magnuson’s decision allowing the players to sue the NFL in state court for violating Minnesota state laws pertaining to workplace drug testing.

We will have more details on this development when they become available. The Vikings have not released a formal announcement.

Great News! At least it sounds like it at the surface. I am unfamiliar with the depths of the US Court system, but I have a feeling that the NFL stil lhas the opportunity to appeal and continue to drag this on longer. Is this true, or does the U.S. Court of Appeals have the final say on the matter?

PPE – You are exactly right. The NFL does have the ability to appeal this decision, but I think that will be a tough road to take on. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the NFL opted not to do that. Let’s wait and see what the league’s official response is…I’m interested.

Of course the league will appeal and fight back, they’re not about to look foolish in this whole thing. They feel humiliated and beaten, this is a power-driven league, so they r going to take this all the way, one way or another. At least it will be till after the saeson is over.
