Report: Vikings Waive QB Booty

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 5, 2009 – 4:10 pm

According to multiple outlets, including the Star Tribune’s “Access Vikings” blog (which credits NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora), the Vikings have waived QB John David Booty.

We are unable to confirm this is indeed the case. But we will post the official announcement of the Vikings 53-man roster as soon as it is made available.

Stay tuned to vikings.com for more information.

I hate it for Booty. He was a hard worker and I hope he’ll find another team. But this was the best move for the Vikings. TJ has matured and Sage has potential. Way to go TJ!!!! Hang in there baby – you’ll get your shot.

  2. By Brad on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Well, that was dumb, Booy had a heck of a lot more potential than Tavaris Jackson.

At least I hope they hang onto Ian Johnson, Colt Anderson and Kenny Onatolu.

I agree NC Viking Fan….to see most blogs JDB was no more than the teams water boy. TJ acted like a real QB after the first preseason game. If people take time to think about it…all he had as mentors was Brad Johnson and Gus Ferrotte. I think he will actually learn to be poised in the pocket and everyone will see his true value (an arm that won’t quit).

I saw Ian Johnson was cut. This is interesting though, a million dollar 3rd string QB?

  5. By Shawn on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

This is great. I won a $20 bet with a co-worker because of this move. He thought Tjack would be the QB cut and I bet Booty would be.

  6. By MNSportswiz on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Booty is a stereotypical system QB…he flourished in the USC structure much like any RB did well in the Bronco’s running game during the late 90s.

Booty could not react well with the game when things did not go as drawn up…D coming in on stunts, shifts etc.

  7. By Vikadan11 on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

TJ went 2 of 4 in four series ~ They didn’t have him throwing the ball like Boot and Sage ~ At least their INT’s for TD didn’t come in the playoff game like TJ’s ~

As with all ex Vikings I wish him and all the rest all the best in the future ~

  8. By George Berry on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

To bad for Booty, when he gets as much playing time as TJ has had he will be a better quarterback! But for now TJ is a better choice. Too bad we couldn,t cut Sage and keep Booty!

  9. By NC Viking Fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

True Vikidan11, but look how he performed against Kansas City WITH the starters.

  10. By Hurry Up on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Let’s go. Announce the cuts some time today.

  11. By vikefan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Seriously Brad? Booty had more potential than Jackson? Have paid attention to one thing that has happened in training camp and preseason? Are you just a blind hater? or maybe someone else’s puppet?

    Yeah that’s old news.

Vikings.com stated it’d post all the cuts at 5pm CST.

As usual, this POS website let us down.

no offense, Vikadan11, but your defense of sage and booty are comical. Why is it better for them to have thrown ints in the preseason, against 3rd and 4th stringers, than tjack throwing one pick against one of the best defensive masterminds in the game, Jim Johnson?? Just a thought

  15. By MD Vikes fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

agreed…I just hope Reynaud and Jaymar Johnson make the team…we need punt and kick returners!!!!

  16. By purple08 on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

yeah baby! totally the right call. best thing for the team. Favre #1, TJ#2, Sage#3. so tired of hearing all the TJ haters. the same people who dump on Chilly. whiners who know nothing! Chilly for coach of the year!

  17. By Bill on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

If that clown cut Johnson i am going to be blowing out steam he has so much potential good move though keeping tjack and lock him up for the future

  18. By williow323 on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

hey brad did you see the same game i saw booty out there he look like a deer in the head ligths.the guy has no ideal whats going on and you think hes better than tj. you need to be a fan of some other team because you have no ideal.

  19. By Tucson Vikings on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

TJ should be 2nd string they should have kept JD Boots for third string & sent Sage back to Houston!!!

  20. By Bill on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Tjack is the man keep him he should be #2 Brad Sage and Booty are horrible and booty has not shown one bit of improvment from last preseason either

  21. By Bill on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

tucson that wouldnt be a bad idea at all

  22. By 8 foot on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Vikes are putting themselves in position for tebow that’s why the release of booty. TJ a FA next year and favre retires after we win superbowl.

  23. By Patrick on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Also Vikadan11, somebody on a blog made a great point: Reid will outcoach Childress with his eyes closed. Plus it’s not like the Eagles went and got killed the next week; instead they did much the same to Eli Manning as they did to Jackson.

  24. By NC Viking Fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Yes – Tebow, but what are the Vikings going to have to give up to move from 32 to the top 5 in next year’s draft.

  25. By Vikadan11 on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

I not defending them Andy Ulven ~ I dont think any of them are that good ~ But I do think TJ is the worst of the lot ~

  26. By Jake on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Analysts and all are saying Tebow will be a late first , early second round pick anyway

  27. By Bill on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Tebow will never amount to anything as a NFL QB and Bradford will last but not be a starter i just dont see a promising career for him but McCoy should be pretty good but Tjack should be the future

  28. By Vikadan11 on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Patrick I agree ~ Chilly got out coached more than once last year ~ Just like not firing the ST coach by the bye last year ~ Just another dumb move on his part ~ If had fired him like he should have the same guy that took over this year would have had a head start and might have saved a couple of games last year ~

  29. By Jake on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Bradford, McCoy, and Tebow will be better QBs than Stafford, Sanchez, and Freeman from this years draft in my opinion and i dont get why ppl think Tebow won’t be a good NFL QB he has good size, can scramble, has a nice arm , hes a solid QB for an NFL team who needs one to pick up next year i think

  30. By Tucson Vikings on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

How can TJ be the worst of the bunch? He has way more upside (mobile) than the other two slugs (JD & The Spice) Have all you TJ haters forgot about the 4 TD game he had last year against the Cardinals?????? + I was there HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  31. By Bill on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Tuscon We sure agree that Tjack is our only hope lets see after this idiot retires finally. who will never get us a superbowl like you guys think we will still have a chance and you guys think that sage will lead us to one. NO WAY! and the vikes cant wait another two, Three years to develop a QB Tarvaris Is our only hope and will develop into a really good QB

  32. By Jake on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Does anyone agree that the Rosenfel pick up in the offseason was a waste?

  33. By MD Vikes fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Also Tucson…what about the games he won down the stretch last year to get us to the playoffs????? Your right they’re haters!!!

  34. By NC Viking Fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Yeah, Jake, at the time it wasn’t a bad pickup, but at that time we didn’t have Favre on the radar either. I think he’ll develop into a good 3rd stringer, but nothing more.

  35. By dapaan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

why wont the vikings just relase the cuts, is chilly trying to be smarter than everyone else again?

  36. By MD Vikes fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

again NC Viking Fan I agree. TJ needed someone to mentor him. Even though it will cost us money now, it will be worth it when Superbowl time comes. I do agree 25 mil was way too much money…I think QB coach would have been a better idea

  37. By Jake on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Yeah that’s what i think but now that we have Favre for this year , the only chance Rosenfels contributes is if Favre played next year and then TJ leaves but if Favre retires after this year and we sign TJ and he is the QB then we basically wasted a 4th round pick to get him and there are plenty of stud fourth rounders out there not saying that if we did draft a guy there that he’d be a stud but at least he’d have a chance to contribute most likely

    Good point MD Vikes fan.

  42. By Bill on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

cmon Chilly you idiot. ITs official though Ian Johnson was Cut what a stupid stupid move

  43. By MD Vikes fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Did anyone hear that McCuley was cut as well?

  44. By Jake on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Yeah I wish we could return him cuz i think hes pretty much a waste but time will tell too but one thing i dont understand is why teams keep 3 QBs , because it wastes a roster spot plus if your top 2 QBs do get injured which is extremely unlikely then what is the chances a 3rd stringer gives you any hope at all

  45. By MD Vikes fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Jake I agree shouldn’t that 3rd QB be a former QB that has moved to another position?

  46. By Jake on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Yeah or if you want 3 QBs at least make sure that they can do that and like WR or RB or something , kind of like a wildcat type QB, but like with are 3 QBs , none of them play different positions really and chances are all 3 wont see action this season so why keep them all when you could keep a player that cut that can help with special teams or something, and will actually get a chance to play

  47. By MD Vikes fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Hey everybody look at the active roster spots….53 players…and Reynaud and Jaymar Johnson made the team…YEA!!!!!!!!!

  48. By unnamed fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Is Marcus Walker on the roster or was he one of the cuts?

  49. By Tucson Vikings on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

There is no Walker on the team so he must have been cut.

  50. By Arizona Vike on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

They missed the biggest cut of all they should have cut Chilly as he is the most useless of them all.

  51. By nobadlie on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

The bad thing about TJ as a backup, is that he is not a team player. He will be the one that will let the team down when it matters. Booty is a team player and hasn’t had the time with the 1st string. You wait TJ will let us down in the time of need.

  52. By #1Viking Fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Let us take a look at this. You trade to get a backup QB (Sage Rosenfel). Getting rid of him would make the organization look stupid. Why would you trade for a guy and let him go before he even plays for you. You pick a QB in the mid rounds of the draft and don’t spend any resources or time to help him better himself you just cut him after one year. And then you have a QB not even a Division I QB who has had the opportunity to develop into a NFL starting QB for the last 4 if not 5 years and he still plays at a level no better than a third string QB. If he was as good as all you TJ lovers think than why could we not get any offers from other teams while shopping him last week. And there are some teams that need a QB bad Ex: Denver. TJ should have received the waiver. Favre 1. Sage 2. Booty3.

  53. By blacknblue on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

I’ve posted my feelings on TJ too many times now to repeat. I will say is that when we were 0-2 last year you were all calling for his and Chilly’s head. That game against the cards was the best game he will ever play. And when he starts again next year I’m gonna see the same people saying how he’s the best option we have right now do another 180.

  54. By #1Viking Fan on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

I think they should have kept Favre, Rosenfel, Booty as our QB’s and still maybe kept TJ on the team and maybe tried to develop him into a wideout or cornerback. Because the guy has alot of physical talent. He just does not have the capabilities of reading a defense. Which is the number one essential attribute needed by a NFL QB. You need to be able to audible when things don’t look right. TJ just can not get this done.

  55. By blacknblue on Sep 5, 2009 | Reply

Well that’s when he runs, gets sacked or worst case gets hurt.

  56. By Purple Sprint Car on Sep 6, 2009 | Reply

Agreed, seemingly successfull college QB’s amount to squat in the NFL.

Booty is an unfortunate product of that system.

Best to be an unknown-under the radar or small school QB, as you will make more an impact on NFL teams.

Tired of the Heisman winning QB’s amounting to little or nothing in the NFL as of late…

Definetely the wrong QB got cut, Booty has alot more future than T-Jack. I guess if you are a high draft choice it does not matter if you are 4th best QB on the team. Wrong move!

  59. By sidepocket shake on Sep 6, 2009 | Reply

I know a lot of people wanted to cut T-Jack but Brad is not as dumb as he looks, he know he got a ace in the hole with T-Jack, because when Favre goes down (and he’s going down by game 8) he has someone he can put in there that can get the job done.
