Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe is one of my favorite personalities in the Vikings locker room. He’s typically in a good mood and is always quick to say “hi” in passing. And you can always count on something interesting either happening or being said when Shiancoe is around.
On the day QB Brett Favre joined the Vikings, Shiancoe was in classic form, offering up a couple of interesting takes on Favre playing for the Vikings.
“He’s sent a couple of tight ends to the Pro Bowl,” Shiancoe astutely pointed out, “so I’m definitely excited. I know I’m going to get a lot of balls. I have to put in a lot of extra work to make sure I’m prepared for the balls that come to me.”
With training camp finished and 1 preseason game in the books, the push will be on for Favre to get acquainted with his new teammates and acclimated with his playbook. But Shiancoe indicated that Favre’s experience in the NFL will help ease his transition into what should be a fairly familiar offense.
“He picked it up quick,” Shiancoe said. “He ran this offense for almost 20 years…that’s a long time. That’s almost my life. He’s been around for a long time so he’ll pick it up. He’s a professional.”

Even before the signing of QB Brett Favre, the Vikings were a fairly high-profile team due to the amount of star players on the roster. And now that Favre has joined the club, the attention the Vikings command will significantly increase.
What hasn’t changed, according to 6-time Pro Bowl LG Steve Hutchinson, is the team’s goals for the season.
“Our goals haven’t changed,” Hutchinson said walking off the field after practice. “We want to build on what we did last year.
“Like I said when we reported to camp, (when) you have the opportunity to have a guy join your team that’s going to potentially make you better as a unit, I’m all for it.”

During training camp, Vikings rookie Percy Harvin said it was “a dream come true” to be playing in the NFL with a player such as RB Adrian Peterson. On Tuesday, with his team signing QB Brett Favre, the dream has continued.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be able to play with a Hall of Famer,” Harvin said today after practice. “I’m just blessed. It’s a tremendous honor in my first year to be able to play with guys of that caliber. But you add Brett to the equation and I couldn’t be in a better situation right now. Everything happens for a reason so I’m glad I’m here.”
Harvin also said that the presence of Favre on the team has already had an influence on him.
“He’s helped me out already and he’s only been here for a couple hours,” Harvin said. “There was one play when I ran an out (route)…we hooked up but there were some little things he gave me to make the route better or to help recognize the defense.”
But Vikings fans can be sure that the Favre-Harvin relationship will be a 2-way street. Favre will impart his knowledge on the young receiver, but Harvin also has a few tricks up his sleeve that will ease the veteran QBs transition to Minnesota.
“He said ‘make me look good’,” Harvin said of his encounter with Favre in Winter Park earlier today,”and I said I’d do my best.”

Vikings superstar RB Adrian Peterson reacted to his team’s signing of QB Brett Favre:
“It is a unique situation to be able to add a player such as Brett Favre,” Adrian Peterson said. “Any time you can add a player to your roster with Hall of Fame credentials, you do it. Brett has seen a lot of different situations and a lot of defenses, and he’s going to be a big asset for our team as we look to defend our division championship in 2009.”

QB Brett Favre just signed a contract and is now a Minnesota Viking.
“We believe adding a player such as Brett Favre to our mix will be a strong positive for this football team,” Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress said. “As we have conveyed before, his unique knowledge of our system, the NFC North and his innate skills make this a rare opportunity. We felt there was a brief window to reconsider the possibility and owed it to the organization to evaluate our options. After thorough discussion, the same variables that made this a unique and positive situation previously, still exist. Now, our attention turns to getting to work as a team, our next practice and getting prepared for the season.”

The Vikings defeated Indianapolis tonight by a count of 13-3, moving their preseason record to 1-0 and dropping the Colts to 0-1. The Viking scored all 13 of their points in the 1st half and put on a stellar defensive effort to smoother the Indianapolis offense all night.
QB Sage Rosenfels got the start and drove the Vikings 72 yards on 11 plays during the 1st series, resulting in a 5-yard Chester Taylor TD run and an early 7-0 lead. Colts QB Peyton Manning was sacked 3 times on his 1st drive and didn’t come back out for a 2nd series.
We’ll have more coverage on vikings.com tonight and into tomorrow.
