Big Night For Potential Reserves/Backups

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 21, 2009 – 6:59 pm

Tonight’s game will be a national spectacle because it’s QB Brett Favre’s debut in a Vikings uniform. But the reality is that tonight is actually a bigger night for those battling for key reserve/backup roles.

The Vikings brought 80 players with them to training camp in Mankato this summer, but only 53 will make the final cut next month. Tonight is a big night because starters typically see minimal action in the 2nd preseason game. The 3rd preseason game is as close to a dress rehearsal as you are going to see, which means the guys vying for reserve/backup roles don’t see much time.

Other than tonight, the 4th preseason game is also a key time for the potential reserves/backups.

Vikings QB Sage Rosenfels was not in uniform for pregame warmups, leading to the obvious conclusion that he won’t see the field tonight. DE Jared Allen, whom many speculated would not suit up tonight, was in uniform during pregame warmups.
