Shiancoe Adds Interesting Perspective

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 18, 2009 – 4:55 pm

Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe is one of my favorite personalities in the Vikings locker room. He’s typically in a good mood and is always quick to say “hi” in passing. And you can always count on something interesting either happening or being said when Shiancoe is around.

On the day QB Brett Favre joined the Vikings, Shiancoe was in classic form, offering up a couple of interesting takes on Favre playing for the Vikings.

“He’s sent a couple of tight ends to the Pro Bowl,” Shiancoe astutely pointed out, “so I’m definitely excited. I know I’m going to get a lot of balls. I have to put in a lot of extra work to make sure I’m prepared for the balls that come to me.”

With training camp finished and 1 preseason game in the books, the push will be on for Favre to get acquainted with his new teammates and acclimated with his playbook. But Shiancoe indicated that Favre’s experience in the NFL will help ease his transition into what should be a fairly familiar offense.

“He picked it up quick,” Shiancoe said. “He ran this offense for almost 20 years…that’s a long time. That’s almost my life. He’s been around for a long time so he’ll pick it up. He’s a professional.”

If the team pulls together and works together this will be a very exciting season. Favre will make the leagues Def. Coordinators think three dimensional. Horizontal, lateral, and something we’ve been missing for a long time- the vertical game.

With Favre at the QB helm, Minnie will no longer have a one dimensional offense. Just like last year with NY, the Vikings will stop seeing the defensive box stacked at the line with the constant threat that Favre may throw down field. Instead of constantly anticipating a Peterson run, defenses will have to play honestly and spread out to cover all the angles. With that in mind, Peterson should have a great year, just like Thomas Jones with the Jets last season. Since Brett will no longer have to carry the team on his shoulders, he should be more patient and force fewer plays this season. Before his injury with the Jets last year, Favre had a 3 to 1 TD to INT ratio and a completion percentage over 70%. This is by far the best team that Brett has played on since the Superbowl Packers team from ’96 to ’98.
