Vikings Waive CB Charles Gordon

Posted by Mike Wobschall on July 27, 2009 – 11:17 am

The Vikings moved on Monday to waive CB Charles Gordon because of a failed physical. The move leaves the Vikings with 81 players on the roster and 15 total DBs.

Gordon originally joined the Vikings as an undrafted rookie in 2006, where he initially was on practice squad but eventually moved up to the active roster and was 1 of just 4 rookies and the lone undrafted rookie to start a game during the season. In 2007 he grabbed his 1st career INT against the Chargers and had a career best 7 tackles against the 49ers.

Aside from contributing to the Vikings defense as a nickel back, Gordon was also a standout special teams player for the Puprle. He was a shifty kick returner, which added value to his role with the team. But it was on a special teams play that an ankle injury eventually ended his season in 2008. Gordon suffered the injury while returning a punt against the Packers in Week 10 of last season and was later placed on injured reserve.

That’s too bad. I was thinking Gordon might have been one of the guys to be vying for the nickel slot, or at worst the #4 slot in dime situations.

I must say that I agree with you PurplePeopleEater, Gordon was definitely a player and he was definitely going to be a top guy in the nickel slot. He was a great returner and I’m sad to hear he’s gone after enduring that injury. I have to salute him as a great special teams player.

I am happy we have the QB spot open. Now a die hard Viking’s fan since the Randal days say wake up and get Vick. Do not sleep on this one. We need a high octane athletic quarterback who can make things happen on his own. The pocket quarterbacks we have had in the past are not getting it done because they cannot move and throw accurately. It is the one thing keeping us out of the Super Bowl. We have all the other pieces and surely Minnesota Fans would back someone of his ability. No offense but Bret was never the way to go, just too old. We need young fresh legs and an arm. Sell the farm, cut some salaries, get Michael Vick.
